Howard never laughed harder than during the Billy years, yet he always denied that they were the best 2 years of the show. He said he thought the Sal, Richard, Artie cast was the best and funniest.
I’m fine with Howard being able to do what he wants on Sirius/XM, but going against the mainstream back then (FCC era), and sort of forcing people to realize how much that kind of humor was loved by “normal” audiences, made the listening adventurous and hilarious. We live in a much different era, but if you were around in 1994, music and Stern were kind of punk rock by today’s standards!
Billy West was so good and had such good business sense, Howard was afraid of not having full control of his staff and turned against Billy.. why Keep Martling when he “wouldn’t have anything outside the show” and act so blasé, yet almost expedite and completely ignore Billy West’s requests and eventual exit?
The funny thing is that Jackie Engineered himself getting a puppet on the show. He knows the guy who made it. He got it made. Even put the phone number on the front for advertisement and Howard never caught on. An endless plug.

I miss the old show and still listen here and there but never catch myself hanging out in my car hanging on every word like I used to.

It was Fred who wanted Billy gone. He was even more jealous than Howard was of Billy. Billy's impressions put Fred to shame...listen to the Raymond Burr bit...Fred couldn't stand that Billy did it better.
