- As usual, Apple no longer supply a bootable USB Flash Drive with latest OS X releases - including the new OS X 10.11 El Capitan.
Using this tutorial you will be able to create your very own bootable USB Flash Drive using Apple's newest operating system, El Capitan, in 3 easy steps!
Command used in this video:
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/OSX --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app --nointeraction

It took me 8 hrs to figure out what I was doing wrong but unlike people that will complain instead I thank you for the guiding us with this video. - Side note- if anyone is still struggling with this issue make sure you have El Capitan installed on your apps and not on your desktop.. other wise you are inputting the wrong command with this code. and make sure you follow step by step what it says here because if you rename the drive something other than OSX it will not work because its also embedded in the code.
thx
You can also just edit the code to match the name of your volume. Works either way.
Wiped the OS and couldn't download as Apple have removed it from the App Store.
This tutorial was clear and worked even easier than Disk Maker X. Cheers!
I was giving a Old iMac 2009 and didn't have a OS X installed on the computer, so I had to start from scratch. To make a long story short,... your explanation of making a Bootable USB Flash Drive for El Capitan was great. Easy to understand... thank you very much for making it simple for us to understand.
You're welcome. Glad it helped!
Same ... and I laughed at the end becuase I was given a MacBook Air !
By far the best El Capitan to bootable USB flash explainer that I've found. Especially the great tip regarding stray hyphens and such. Thanks.
Holy heck, I know I'm writing this 8 years after you made this video but it's saving my bacon right now. Thank you!!
Glad its still of use!!
It worked like a charm. Thanks for making this video for those of us who are less tech savvy.
Still waiting for the installation file to be copied to the disk, but I'm already thankful: yours it's the first tutorial that took me so far!!!!
if the disc on your mac is named OSX then just follow the instructions from the video but name your usb drive OSX2 and follow his instructions to erase and partition it but use OSX2 as the name - and when you get to the part where you have to use the terminal use this - sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/OSX2 --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app --nointeraction - then it should install to your usb drive good luck
When you copy this straight into terminal you might get "createin-stallmedia". Just remove the hyphen from "createinstallmedia" and this should work.
OR use this command
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/OSX --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app --nointeraction
In my case this was causing the "Command not found". Hope this will help someone.
+Jalal Ahmad Thanks!
+Jalal Ahmad Thanks, had i not seen your comment.. i would have never gotten it to works..
+SuperNovah I am glad it helped you .
+Jalal Ahmad I've been struggling for the past 3 days with this issue ... You are a life saver ... Really thank you!!
+MUSICA EN VIVO (OGJAY05) yes it will ask for password, because it has sudo at start. Try typing your machine password, if you don't have password setup, just hit return. Hope this helps.
being on this installation for over 4 days and then your method worked for me, thanks a lot
Tobi WebDev how did you find the download it’s not in Mac store
Nice. Very clean and professional tutorial. Already knew how to do this just needed a reminder. Much appreciated. Keep up the great work ;-)
When you download el capitan it will show up as a .dmg file. You will have to open it and run the installer to get it to work, after its ran it will then show up in the applications. Be sure to name everything exactly as he dose so that the code he gives will work.
If you run the installer wont it try and write over your current OSX?
@@Shushfilms no, but it will be installed on the computer. You can delete it later if you want or keep it around. All it dose is install it in the format needed to be used, an application.
thanks a lot for this video. i got an old imac that was giving me the "temporarily unavailable" issue and your guide totally saved my computer. it's running really well now. thanks!
I’m getting the same message, did you get it when you tried to type in the Apple ID and Password? I’m going to try this method.
Amazing tutorial!!! I have been looking ALL over the internet for something like this. Thank you sir! helping people years later!
For anyone getting "Command not found" make sure you have the "install OS X El Capitan" in your applications folder first then try again.
it is, but still no luck . any ideas? ?
It´s not... How I make it appear there in applications?
THANK GOD AND THANK YOU! I didnt have it in my APPLICATIONS folder as it was just on my desktop. thanks for pointing this out!
I hope someone can help. I went through the first few steps, the usb drive was successfully renamed to Install OS X El Capitan. I rebooted the device and it's asking me to select a disk to install. When I select the external disk, it says 'there is not enough free space on Install OS X El Capitan'.
However it's a 16GB drive which erased before the whole process (only step I had to skip was creating a partition, the partition tab was greyed out). Any ideas?
I can't help you on the technicall side of this but I will tell you that if all you need is to install an old operating system, then apple will actually do it for you for free as long as no hardware stuff is involved. I recently found this out

This is the ONLY one that works on UA-cam
Thank you SOOO much! I was given a mid 2010 Macbook Pro that didn't have an OSX, and I wasn't able to install one via wifi. This video was spot on!!!! Thank you thank you thank you
Glad it helped!
Hi Bashir, thank you so much for your very easy to follow video that packed with so much information that allowed me to be able to reinstall El Capitan on my old MBP. Followed all steps to the T and did not face any issue at all.
Great. Glad it helped!
Worked for me -had to improvise a few things to follow the video whilst running OSX El Capitan. Thank you.
You're the best! thanks a lot. I erased my Macbook pro with Maverick previously installed and since I haven't downloaded Maverick before and it isn't available on the apple store I was left without an operating system. This just solved my problem entirely.
hey bro, i tried thus and i have the same exact problem but when installing i am being told that the os x was corrupted.... what can i do?
Macbook Pro Mid 2009 here if anyone needs to see this.
I upgraded my MBP with the patcher to Catalina, but it was way too slow so I wanted a clean install of the latest supported OS X El Capitan (I also forgot my password and couldn’t access the terminal or change it through my Apple ID). So to get it working I took out my internal HDD, plugged it in another MBP (running High Sierra) through an external adapter and formatted it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) + GUID Map using Disk Utility. After that I downloaded the supported OS X through Apple’s website (download the .dmg through Safari), run (mount) the .dmg and install the .pkg. It will install the OS X in your Applications folder and then follow the instructions in the video. Turn on your computer holding down Alt (option) and boot from the USB Drive that has the OS X. After that just follow the setup.
Another Mac OS computer saved me here, cause I couldn’t get into recovery mode on my MBP and CMD + R (+shift) never worked - always got the circle with dash or folder with question mark. If you can’t install El Capitan on a newer OS X (like High Sierra), then install the OS X it allows. Once you do that, install the OS X on the internal HDD or SSD you have connected externally. Screw the drive back into your MBP and close it up. When you turn it on and get a circle with dash in the middle, turn it off and plug in the bootable USB with El Capitan on it. Turn it on again holding down Alt (option) and then it should show the bootable options -> select your USB and follow the setup :) It worked for me and took about 2 hours to do everything.
Thank you - that's absolutely brilliant. I'd tried all over the internet before finding this video. So clear!
Glad it helped!
Finally the first understandable video that I could find, thanks
Well done on this video. It's concise which I like. Disc utility looked a little different on my sierra mac but was still able to blunder my way through the process and make a bootable usb drive that actually worked on the early 2008 imac that I just picked up for my mum today for AU$50. Thanks to you and a little effort from me she can now order her groceries on a 21.5 inch screen rather than an ipad screen which I think will make like a lot easier. Many thanks.
Plus, it didn’t have a lot of useless annoying and loud background music!
This code actually worked, the other one because it didnt have --nointeraction wouldn't erase the usb contents. CHEERS!!
hey my friend Worked like a charm. I was sitting with a 2009 macbook Pro with a bare hard disk. Thank You!
I'm getting this message: "You can't install this version because there is a newer version installed" What should I do?
1
It means the os on you mac is a newer version than the one you are trying to install.
You can wipe your hard drive and do a clean install of your chosen os. Make sure you back up everything first. 🙂
Dog Day Music hey wonder if you could help. Maybe a silly question but once I have downloaded the le Capitan installer do I copy it to the usb stick ? Or leave it in my applications? Just to add I have already formatted the usb stick. Hope you can help. Thanks
@@noknroll2091 you dont need to do anything. you just enter the command in terminal and terminal does all the work
Hey, thanks for the video! When running the .dmg for the El Capitan installer I get - “Install OS X El Capitan” cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified." I manually dragged the install app into the Applications folder and ran the command, but the command doesn't work and the “Install OS X El Capitan” cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified." popup reappears. How can I get around this? Currently running 12.6.5 to create this USB.
Any reason why my downloaded OS Sierra is a .DMG file in the "Downloads" section of Finders an NOT inside applications? I can't go inside to "view contents"
Thanks for the instructions. Got it done and without any problems. The instructions were clear and simple to follow and I have now completed the job and am very happy. Thanks
You're welcome!
quick, clean and easy tutorial.
It takes some time to get everything right, but it did work for me after carefully following the instruction
YOUR THE MAN. You helped me out on the error „this item is currently unavailable. Please try again later“ as i tried to reinstall Mac os x el Capitan on an old mac book late 2010. for those who try to find the old os software el capitan: you can find it only directly on apples homepage, not in the app store anymore. Thanks
I'm getting this message: "You can't install this version because there is a newer version installed" What should I do?
WHY CANT I GET THIS SAME QUESTION ANSWERED?
Die hard winders user / IT engineer in training chiming in here. Apparently, those "geniuses" at apple want you to buy the installation disk OR use a Mac with the SAME OS version or else it won't freakin work. I had to make several virtual machines just to find that out.
Great informative video! learnt EXACTLY what i needed! Cheers
Glad it helped!
working perfectly, thank you very much spent several days looking but no one explained it that way.
It won't let me open the Partition tab when in Disk Utility. Pls help!
Same! my page also looks entirely different than his...
Erase instead
I’m stuck at reboot
Generally with a new memory stick you don't need to create a partition. Just wipe it.
@MilkTrafficker not seeing he clicked on anything
thanks for helping me revive my dying MacBook bro 👍
May it give you many more happy years!!! lol
@@iftibashir it will 😁
@@iftibashir though I’m having a problem that says along the lines of “your storage is too small of Mac os X” not exact but its like that
Thanks for the clear instructions. great job.
Bless your heart. worked like a charm. saved many headaches
Thanks Ifti, really clear instructions
Thanks for watching - hope it helped!

STILL GETTING COMMAND NOT FOUND
cant you just drag the installer app to the usb drive? I know i've done something like that before.
I think so yes. lol I have done that.
command not found, tried copy n paste, tried typing it myself, made sure the installer was in applications, noting is working- still says command not found... need help immediately please
When you have done your usb, boot it by pressing alt key. Select the usb from boot screen then from top menu firstly select disc utility and format the destination part after that select terminal screen and rearrange date to year 2016. After that begin to installation. Other wise gives error. Hope this will help👍
This helped me out a lot. the only thing i had to pirate was the actually El Capitan because my operating system wouldnt allow me to get the installer
really good video, cheers.
+iSparkton OMG HAHAHA UR HERE XD do u have a mac?
Lulu3D i have macbook pro 2010 haha
Hello, thank you very much for the tutorial, I have a question. I'm running Mojave trying to downgrade to El Capitan (I have a software that will only work on el capitan and earlier versions) When I try to boot from the USB drive (created with your sequence), I get the denied icon on my mac. (/)
Thanks so much; clear and concise advice.
Glad it was helpful!
My mac is currently running yosemite and i want to keep it with that. Could I install capitan onto the usb only to install on a different computer without effecting my current os x?
Thanks very much. Best video on youtube. Found this eventually and all successfully!
Thank you so much, worked great ✌🏼
mine says "The copy of the installer app failed."
What do I do?
Did you get it to work? I’m so close to buying it haha
Thanks Bro Jus got my 2008 imac back up n running
Good to hear!!
I wish I know all this..thank you so much for the easy to follow steps..

Hi. Can I do it on Win10?
No
Thank you!!! Needed this!
I'm getting a message saying that the command isn't found in the terminal. What do I do?
Great film, thanks for the time you took and posting. Very clear, well presented and descriptions good, refreshed my brain prior to attemping a fresh install die to a sick hard disk replacement 10/10

MAN!!! THIS IS A GUIDE! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
nice, and clear demo. Question I am very hesitant to uninstall Snow Leopard because of third party software that I enjoy using and do not want to output extra cash to upgrade. I'd like to know if I can run OSX from the flashdrive, with out effecting the snow leopard?
My terminal prompt keeps saying the command not found. Even with other install video codes. Help!
I'm having the same issue
@@turntabletiger I figured it out with a few other videos but in the command you have to change the source after /Volumes / to your USB disk name. I named mine Untitled so it was easy. So change whatever is after that /volume / command. Check out a couple other ones and one of them will mention that specifically (this video might actually but I skipped a lot hahah ) good luck! I ended up making a time machine backup of my other Mac desktop and my MacBook is still loading it so I hope that works otherwise my USB version won’t work
Thank you....clear and concise !
Hello. I just wanted to confirm if i use one mac to make this bootable USB flash drive then plug it into another mac in order to install onto that system, then this will not clear any data from the first mac (used to make the drive)?
No you are only using the first mac to make the USB - not to install it.....
thankyouuuuuuu for sharing very helpful video might get there in the end thanx to you
Figured it out, Thank you. I had to open the .pkg and then it created the Install file xo
I am using macOS Monterey to do this, but the partition option is greyed out and cannot be clicked. Do I need to create a partition?
All good, I figured it out! Had to click on View all devices
thanks this is help full I wont need to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard first on my imac 2008
It's been 8 years, but this is still useful... i have a question for u tho. I have a 2007 imac that has a password on it that i can't for the life of me, remember. Can i do what u said to do on a separate computer and then put the usb into the 2007 mac and install it from the boot menu or no?
you saved my life man
thank you
If the partition is not available click veiw to the top left of the drive selector. Click show all devices. Then you can see the disk, hit the erase button on that. You will see scheme, select GUID partition map. Partitions should now be available. Your welcome.
Best video!! Super easy to follow the instructions and it worked!! Thank you!
how did you get the download from the app store?
Shushfilms no! I didn’t find it at the App Store so I went on the Apple website and downloaded from there!
@@nativadomar how did you get the command to work then if it's not in your applications? When i downloaded it it gave me a .dmg file that went to my downloads.
Shushfilms OS X El Capitan
El Capitan downloads as a disk image. On a Mac that is compatible with El Capitan, open the disk image and run the installer within, named InstallMacOSX.pkg. It installs an app named Install OS X El Capitan into your Applications folder. You will create the bootable installer from this app, not from the disk image or .pkg installer.
super video, it worked fine for me, it was just what I needed :-)
Awesome detail....thanks a million.

how did you download El Capitan its not showing up in my App Store?

Just rename your USB stick to OSX - that is the path name that the terminal window is looking for. Alternatively change the script you cut and pasted to reflect the name of your USB device. Possibly its called Untitled or Volume.
