    Belgian had 55 of these in the 1980's. i loved being a commander on it. what most analist forget to mention is that this weapon can operate on its own ! or manually with a 'handle' on, the turret to shoot at 'pop up ' targets (helicopters popping up behind tree lines. the handle was pointed on the target and a release of the handgrip would make the turret turn in less than 3 sec to its assigned target. a pedal was used to start shooting

      They told me that they had used a highly advanced (for the time) targeting system that told them where to aim ahead of the enemy planes to hit them.
      They didn't call it radar, but the way they described it, it worked the same way. It determined the speed and altitude of the plane and the angle and direction to aim the guns.

      @@digitalisman3267 During World War II, the Germans used an advanced air defense system called the "Würzburg Radar." This system was a key element in German air defense strategy, utilized for detecting and tracking enemy aircraft. It played a significant role in night fighting and in directing anti-aircraft artillery.
      The Würzburg Radar (called: Funk-Sende-Empfangsgerät FuSE 62 bzw. Funk-Messgerät FuMG 62; at the beginning also FMG 39; Flak-Messgerät) was a relatively compact system that could be mounted on a mobile trailer, making it flexible and easily relocatable. It featured a large, parabolic antenna that emitted electromagnetic waves and received signals reflected off aircraft. This technology allowed the Germans to detect and track enemy aircraft at distances up to 70 kilometers, which was impressive for that era.
      In addition to the Würzburg Radar, there were other German radar systems, such as the Freya radar, used for early warning. These systems together formed an effective network for air surveillance, posing significant challenges to the Allies.

      @@digitalisman3267 Funkmessgerät (also Funk-Messgerät, short FuMG or FuG) was the name used by the German Wehrmacht before and during the Second World War for radio equipment and devices, which were used to locate aircraft or ships, to direct fire of the air and coastal artillery or to guide their own fighter aircraft. These can be divided into active radio measuring devices (in modern German radar devices) with transmitter and receiver part, later also as radio measuring device (FuMO). as well as passive devices, which only received and did not transmit signals. The latter were also called radio measurement observation devices (FuMB), today they would be called radar warning devices.

    It's nothing to do with technology standing the test of time. Gepard was designed to deal with helicopters and low flying aircraft coming in for close air support, as technology developed and weapon ranges got further and further the Gepard became obsolete hence why it was phased out of service. The mass adoption of cheap drones in a conflict made it relevant again as a cheap solution to shoot slow flying drones at close ranges.

    Unfortunately, contrary to what the video says, the German Bundeswehr has decommissioned the Gepard in 2012. This probably came from an expectation that in any future conflict, NATO will have air superiority if not supremacy, so there would be no need for the same level of force protection from air targets. Now, with the advent of cheap drones in the thousands on the battlefield, they may have to rethink this decision, as the Gepard appears to be uniquely suited to combat these kinds of threats. While we may not see the Gepard return to active service, they will probably have to introduce a newly developed system that has similar capabilities for combating drones and missiles.

    Odd, the published data has 15km max range and 3600 km/hr. My question is more about acquisition on horizon. I should have predicted sad bot responses. For example we see very sophisticated Russian SAM being destroyed because they cannot acquire and lock onto small and slow attacking devices. The Gepard is excellent at small and slow, but I’d like to hear from someone regarding a weapon coming in like Vihkr, at about 270 m/S head on (smaller radar cross section), at say 500 meters altitude. Does this give Gepard enough time on the horizon for the search radar to spot, then the track system to lock and destroy? A realistic guess is yes, 75% of the time, but hoping to hear from a former user and not a bot.

Argentinien AA shot down two british Harrier during the falkland war. So yes, it's also effective against fast and low flying enemies, Btw 500m isn't low, 50m is...
      But: Radar has to be used. If the enemy uses anti radar missiles or other countermeasures, the effectiveness decreases.

    If a Gepard is up and running in a convoy and Vihkr are fired from far away over the horizon what is the chance of stopping those missiles? I will guess very good as the missiles are not terrain hugging and are not stealth and are subsonic. Does anyone have solid information?

      The Gepard is anti Aircraft so it can only kill slow moving targets and short distance.

    • @Masterafro999
      @Masterafro999 5 місяців тому +1

      The Gepard will at most see the helicopter far outside its engagement range but definitely not the missile unless it is already very VERY close to the convoy. The missile is much too small and fast for the Gepard to intercept it effectively. Sure some cracked gunner might nick one through manual guidance but that's about it. Anything slow flying with a large surface area like a shahed drone or some larger slow flying cruise missiles could be shot down relatively effectively.

    • @richardkudrna7503
      @richardkudrna7503 5 місяців тому

      The published data seems to contradict; “Gepard can hit targets at altitudes up to 3 kilometers, flying at speeds up to 350-400 m / s; its firing range is up to 4 kilometers”. Note that Mach 1 at ISA is 310 m/s. A missile inbound shows its nose but dwells on the scan (like a baseball thrown at you), so simplifies lock).

    • @Masterafro999
      @Masterafro999 5 місяців тому

      @@richardkudrna7503 well the vikhr missile cruises at 600m/s(Mach 1.8). I'm not saying that I can't hit atgms.... It's just insanely unlikely. Either because it simply does not detect the missile or because it can hit it effectively. The missile does not fly in a perfectly straight line towards its target. It twists around its guidance giving lasers.

    • @richardkudrna7503
      @richardkudrna7503 5 місяців тому

      What I read is that the Vihkr peak velocity is 610 m/sec but average over 6 km is just 430 m/sec. The motor impulse is very strong initially to accelerate it then it goes to a sustain impulse to keep it supersonic out to about 7 km. I feel that if Aimed at the Gepard radar and if say detected at 3 km the Gepard has say 8 seconds before being hit. Let’s say it has 5 seconds to lock, track, fire. I’m still thinking yes, Gepard has a very good chance. I’d like to hear from a former operator.

    • @mentar1048
      @mentar1048 5 місяців тому +2

      Very. Shaheds have a significant radar echo due to their size and propeller, and they are generally flying in a straight line. The Gepard gunner essentially just marks the drone on the search radar via joystick, then the turret swings over automatically, the tracking radar follows it, and the fire control computer usually has a firing solution within ~2 seconds. The gunner does not need to do anything more, the turret auto-tracks the drone, and then you step on the firing pedal. It's that simple, really. (Been a Gepard gunner in my army days)

    • @diedampfbrasse98
      @diedampfbrasse98 5 місяців тому +1

      for infrastructure? not really, there are a couple of CIWS in existence which are far superior and would be much more useful for that job, like the US Centurion C-RAM or the German/Swiss Mantis/Skyshield ... thats the stuff Ukraine actually needs for its infrastructure.
      the Gepard only is considered the solution because its available, unlike the rare and more expensive CIWS ... technicly the Gepard is more suited for frontline service, protecting the defense lines, artillery and assault units from loitering munition and surveillance/attack drones. Using them to protect infrastructure and inland cities is wasting the Gepards potential, but ofc Ukraine simply got no better options as NATO cant get its arse up to support them properly with modern weapons.

    • @diedampfbrasse98

      the decision to phase them out was fairly rational, they simply were old and reached their end of life. The dumb decision was to not replace them with the modern skyhield systems, maintaining the direct fire air defense capability of the Heer. But you cant pin that on politicians tbh, that nonsense to restructure the airdefense, completely switch to missile defesne and make it a pure Luftwaffe task came from the Bundeswehr itself ... german politicians relied on what the Bundeswehr told them, if our military were led by people with brain they would have insisted upon maintaining that capability and never would have given the option to restructure our airdefense into oblivion.
      As much power as politicians have in Germany, they still only chose between the options given by military experts and lobbyists ... the nonsense to retire direct fire AA should never have been an option put on the table of ministers by our military.

    The premise is laughable - Gepard is not a weapon against (Irainian, btw) Shaheds. Shaheds cover distances on the order of 1000 km, at an altitude of about 50-100 meters. The probability of a Shahed ever flying into one of the handful of Gepards is laughably low. To protect a large area against Shaheds, you need a large number of cheap machine guns; not a fancy radar-controlled turret inexplicably placed onto a tank chassis (seriously wtf - I could MAYBE understand the armor, but what's up with the fucking tracks?). Also, the other radar - the spinning one, - offers almost zero utility against low-flying Shaheds, as its radio horizon will be virtually the same as visual horizon.

    • @Steamthrower1

Or, we could place one or others near high risk strategic sites and the shaheds will go straight over them, clever right? It's on a Leopard chassiss as it's fast and reliable.
