For those that have a TNC3 and follow this guide, just two differences: The Pi command line would be "rfcomm bind 0 6" and the TNC port entry is "/dev/rfcomm0" -- without the " ". Hope this helps
That was cool using the map to send text messages not just email. I will have to try this on YAAC. Thank you for showing this working.
i just looked and saw you were up the road from me LOL and when you said N0jpd i was like hey i know that guy lol
And that is how u make friends hahah
This is interesting and i do the same with my Kenwood D74’s bluetooth. Both email and aprs messaging from different computers. I will have to try a RPI.
I got the cables to connect mobilinkd3 to my FTM-400. Bluetooth connection to my Android tablet, running Droidaprs was super easy and had the full benefits of external mobile antenna & 25 watts with the features of graphic APRS. Was really surprised how easy it was. Typing an APRS message was sure easier on the tablet than on the FTM-400 screen.
I HAVE to explore this option for the 400 I recently installed in the Jeep. I''m assuming you used the data port on the 400? I haven't researched what all is possible through the data port on that rig. Any links to a good tutorial? 73, de KM4ACK
KM4ACK yes. You use the data port, you also have to go into the menu settings and know which band A or B (I think transceiver is a better term, as that is what we are talking about) the data port is assigned to (and change it if you want the other one). Set the baud rate as well. Then it is just like using the mobilinkd with any other radio. Important note on the cabling, The 400 has Yaesu’s proprietary 8 or 9 pin data port, so when you get the data cable from mobilinkd or wherever, you have to also get the adapter that allows using a 6 pin mini DIN cable. Need same adapter to use the signalink with the 400.
KM4ACK I have used the data port with a USB SignalLink to run Winlink RMS over RF with the 400. Of course, once you have the connections working you could use any VHF data format, Packet, FT8 etc.
Thanks for the info. Will probably play with that over the winter. 73, de KM4ACK
Awesome video and information Jason! Thanks for sharing this!
As you have PI 3 being tested by Patreon. I'm going to add this to my PI 4. My Mobilink TNC is presenting attached to my Win 10. I can run this away from my desktop and TS 2000.. I have another PI 4 for that radio.
This is a nice a portable setup with a lot of flex ability.
Indeed. A challenge for me to figure out but fairly simple once you know the process. Thanks for watching. 73, de KM4ACK
I like the GUI of your R-Pi system.

Keep inspiring sir.
Im newbie in ham radio and so interesting about that
Actual setup tutorial coming next Friday. Thanks for watching! 73, de KM4ACK
More raspi 4 vids please! Interested in non web based raspi comms. Best channel on YT so far for raspi comms.
Thank you Thomas! We will be getting back to the pi 4 soon. September is jam packed for me so probably mid October when they arrive. Lots of projects going all at the same time. 73, de KM4ACK
@km4ack Can you post the info on how to start the MobilinkD TNC so we can set ours up to do the same? Would be good to put it in the description.
Thanks, Jaison fantastic job 73 from kb2uew
Another great video. Thanks!
Thank you & thanks for watching. 73, de KM4ACK
Great video Jason. As far as I know, the mobilinkd 3 will give you a serial port when connected with USB instead of Bluetooth. Could be more reliable in the field. Will try this out as soon as I have a few days off. 73, Stephan, DF6PA
Thanks. Please let us know your results after testing. 73, de KM4ACK
Brilliant as always. Love to see the raw no script build. Another suggestion - when I use pat, I still use the 3 terminal window like in your draws video. In another video you had a single script. Can you teach us how to script it ? Cheers. Wade
The tutorial on how it's done is coming next Friday. I am actually thinking of an entire Linux basics series for ham radio. Basic commands, using cron, & basic scripts. Timing is probably Dec or January. 73, de KM4ACK
Looking forward to that. I ordered a rpi last week just for this project. It is now on my desk anxiously awaiting further instructions.
There are LOTS of things to be done with the pi & ham radio. While you wait on next Friday, I recommend this as your first project. Quick and easy and one of the basics used in many of my videos. ua-cam.com/video/qMT-0mz1lkI/v-deo.html 73, de KM4ACK
Thanks for video. Looking forward to the script!
Thanks for watching! 73, de KM4ACK
Ay chance you will publish the script used to setup/select APRS vs Winlink with Mobilink, Thanks?
I can share the script. Will need to be cleaned up a bit and the correct variables added so it will work on everyone's pi. I just quickly threw this together for the video. Watch for it in a future video. Still need to get the Winlink tutorial video done first. 73, de KM4ACK
@@KM4ACK Hi - any update and/or progress on this script? Thx.
Jeff Marden yes. The script now works with both the TNC 2 & 3. 73, de KM4ACK

So I understand the utility of the Mobilinkd for an HT. I also understand you were just demonstrating the usefulness of it. But why would I not just use an audio cable with my RaspberryPi to do the same thing? Granted more cables are involved, I just want to make sure I'm not missing some other major reason I should use my RaspberryPi with with a Mobilinkd. I'm planning on building an iGate, but I was planning on using a TNC-Pi (half the price of the Mobilinkd) or a Microsat WX3in1 ($20 more than the Mobilinkd but a lot more features/modes). I also want to do an APRS weather station, but I'm still trying to figure out which weather station, I want something other than the Davis everyone uses because I like a color screen and Wifi capability.
You aren't missing a thing. This was just an exploration of what was possible with the mobilinkd TNC. There are many devices that could be used to accomplish the same task. I bought the mobilinkd to use with a basic HT while hunting/hiking so I had APRS but wanted to know if it could do more. The digipeater that runs on a pi in my shack is using an easi-digi soundcard that cost $8 from ebay. Does the trick at about 1/10 the cost of the mobilinkd. 73, de KM4ACK
Are you using your laptop as a monitor for the raspberry pi computer? Or as it’s own computer? I don’t have a laptop or a pi (but am interested in getting one to make a weather station & send info out via APRS), but wanted to use an old android mini tablet with an app for WinLink with the MobileLinkd TNC3 I picked up with cable for a BaoFeng or Kenwood HT. Thx for experimenting on packet radio with your MobileLinkd TNC2.
Karin, I was using a laptop in this case only b/c I needed to be able to do a screen record for the video. The pi creates it's on hotspot that you can connect to with any wireless device (phone, tablet, laptop). ua-cam.com/video/qMT-0mz1lkI/v-deo.html Once connected to the hotspot, you need a VNC viewer app on your wireless device to see/control the pi. If I am not recording for the channel, I am usually using either my iPad mini or iPhone. The iPhone is a bit tough due to limited screen size but will work. The iPad mini or similar tablet is what I find to be the sweet spot in size, power consumption, and usability. 73, de KM4ACK
First I am very new ham! I have Anytone AT D878UV plus, and D578UV pro tri band they both have GPS and Bluetooth. I don't think it can send GPS information to a Pi but should be able to send and receive audio from radios to Pi. I am looking at making a DMR hotspot. Do you think I can use one for a hotspot and to also do VHF Packet and other digital modes. Would Not be doing both at the same time. There is software and hardware to do DStar, DMR, C4FM, YSF, P25, for the Pi. Can you tell me what you think. W4DES 73
I don't think the "digital hotspots" are capable of running a wifi hotspot.
That's what I call a really small footprint, low power system how cool is that for emergency communications!
Thanks Andy! 73, de KM4ACK
Never been able to get Mobilinkd TNC3 to do Winlink using Pocket Pro2 running W10 with WL Express and an HT (Alinco DJ-G7T). However, the same setup does APRS great, using APRS.fi app instead of the Pocket Pro2. Ideas?
Sorry. I don't use Windows. Maybe try the mobilinkd forum groups.io/g/mobilinkd/topics
I have been trying to get my TNC3 to work with my Pi for a week now. Can't get it to work with the USB or Bluetooth. Works well with windows.
I have a tutorial coming Friday for the TNC 2 but the TNC 3 is a bit different. I think the 3 uses channel 6 instead of the default 1. Unfortunately, I don't have a 3 to test with. You may be able to glean enough info from my vid though to make the need adjustments. 73, de KM4ACK
Would it be possible to do FT8/JS8Call with the Mobilinkd ?
Not to my knowledge. The mobilinkd is packet only. 73, de KM4ACK
Of possible could you make a follow-up video about the setting? Kind regards, Xander NL134.
Certainly. It will be coming out next Friday. 73, de KM4ACK
@km4ack you willing to share the script again? This would be super useful.
Again, thanks for the videos!

I have an APRS tutorial for this setup coming out next Friday. While it doesn't have the script, it will give you all you need for APRS. Still tweaking the script a bit but will share when it's done. The Winlink tutorial will be late this month or maybe October. The day job has me covered up this month. Working 7 days a week through the end of September. 73, de KM4ACK
@@KM4ACK for sure! Same here with the real job! 10 hours @ 6 days a week here! I feel your pain! I like the feature where it asks for one or the other. Please don't change that.
Anywho, let me know if anymore β testing needed. I'll help!

How you solved the TNC settings??? I just got mine and I m building the same setup
I used the Android app for the TNC setting and then connected to the pi.
Hi Jason, my learning of raspberry pi 's has come along way with your videos. I'll have to drop on over to your patrion account. I have been able to set up the pi and mobilinkd to be able to receive stations over rf, but don't seem to be able to transmit. The lights on my tnc don't show a transmittion. Any idea what the issue could be? Thanks Trev VK4MAX
Use the mobilinkd phone app to setup and test your mobilinkd device with the radio. This will confirm that it isn't a TNC settings. Once that is configured, you should be good to go with the pi.
Thanks for getting back to me. Running like a dream now. I did notice I had to re bind rfcomm to the mobilinkd each time. Is this avoidable, or is this what you use scripts for? Cheers Trev VK4MAX
Yes please post your script and I would love a winlink tutorial. Thanks 73 ke4ooo
Both will be coming early October 2019. Thanks for watching. 73, de KM4ACK
Has anyone been able to get this to run winlink with an iPad yet? I cant find a video on this and it's all new to me. I am about to buy a Kantronics 3+ from a friend, but would rather run this from my go box so I can use my tablet off the 12 volt instead of needing ac to charge my laptop. This would allow me to run everything from my LiPo4 battery pack with solar backup and not need wall power.
Winlink won't run on an iPad to my knowledge. However, if you run Pat Winlink on the pi, you can interface with it using the iPad. Here is an old video where I show it with an iPhone. ua-cam.com/video/yzu0_JhQ88E/v-deo.html 73, de KM4ACK
