  • I try to show off as many FMVs as I can along the way. I did finish with a good score, which is measured by acreage in this game. I named my character after the true stars of the Oregon Trail series- Death N' Disease. This is the "Beginner" difficulty, but I don't know if that played a part in my zero mortality rate or not. However, it definitely does affect my starting cash. Austin Billings, Jeff Goldsmith, Sally Goldsmith, and Casey O'Neill are my party members.
I'm quite impressed with how they wrote Austin Billings. Considering the minimalist script, they gave a fairly good image of how slavery played out in the era, and not with the guilt tripping people they usually like to do with the narratives. Togba Norris gave an excellent playful performance, while not dumbing it down for the intended audience. The character at least has some depth (albeit limited), though when compared to the one-dimensional nature of most of the other characters, it's a fresh breath of air to have one in 2D.
Even the Native Americans are better written in this version- without the "YOU did this to us" and more of show of how they got a raw deal (though I didn't get it during this playthrough, since conversations are a little bit on the randomized side). At least they're not like the "I'm happy to let you drive us from our land, here's some free fruit, you cursed white devil" types from previous games in the series.
That's not to say I don't have my problems with the writing and research. They try placing the blame for the Donner Party incident on the people involved more than the weather- especially with the newspaper guy ranting about Lansford Hastings. Even the bit where the old guy says they started in late summer was totally inaccurate- the Donner-Reed Party left Independence on May 10th. At least they got the cannibalism part right, and put the right tone on it.
There's also a bit of inaccuracy dealing with the Whitman Massacre, making it sound more like it was the Whitmans' fault than it actually was. They didn't bring the disease with them- other pioneers travelling the trail did. At least they leave you to draw your own conclusion about the Whitmans' attempt at converting the Natives to Christianity. I guess it's OK they left out some of the real complexities of the cause/effect with the incident, considering younger kids are the target audience. But I still wish they would've got their info right on the bits they did share.

You're review is amazing. I thank you for your kind words about my performance in this project I have fond memories of working on this series, and had the pleasure of being directed by Richard D. Thompson. This was my very first commercial project, my very first video game project. Both Richard and I were hired by The Learning Company out of Brooklyn Center, MN and this project led to a few other projects with The Learning Company and launched my commercial career in Minneapolis.
I put my heart into this work and I appreciate you taking the time to review and showcase it. I'm deeply humbled.
    Togba Norris =-)

Togba Norris You deserved it. Most of the memorable characters from the Oregon Trail series are only memorable due to how ridiculous they are (ie. Nicholas J. Tillman consistently giving horrible advice and often being portrayed as a fool). In previous builds, the character of Austin Billings was more of a generic NPC. Even given the minimalist script, you did a very good job bringing him to life here and in 4th Ed. (though that's a random encounter on the trail).

+Togba Norris I used to play this game a lot when I was quite young, and I mean it sincerely when I say Austin was my favourite character to bring along with me. I only found this video because I was on a nostalgia trip, and to think that one of the actors would have commented on this is amazing to me. So thank you for the experience, and all the fond memories!

Togba Norris I understand this was some time ago and that the game's been updated, but I grew up on this. Any chance there will ever be a version of this that'll play on modern computers? I want to play this version so badly it's almost painful.

Unfortunately, Austin Billings would've had a hard time getting land in Oregon in the 1840s, owing to the black exclusion laws that were in effect at the time. If only the 3rd edition hadn't removed the additional trail options - some black men in situations similar to his were able to do reasonably well for themselves during the California Gold Rush, either as miners themselves or (more commonly) as providers of services. Making tools would have been a good source of income for him.
Of course, once the Fugitive Slave Act passed, he would have been under constant threat of being sent back into slavery if he didn't have documentation on him at every waking moment. The barbarism of slavery and the legal system that supported it really can't be overstated or made too obvious.

I used to watch my brother play this game often and the overall atmosphere of the game always appealed to me (minus the dying part lol). Unfortunately, I couldn't beat the game when I played it because the stupid third disc was bugged or something, making it impossible to move a centimeter across the map without being told "THIS COLD COULD KILL YOU"

iheartryanstyles Google how to install Oregon Trail on XP. It's just copying file folders from Disk 1 to a folder on your hard drive and messing around with the config file so it recognizes your CD drive. I forget at the moment the names and folders, but it's fairly simple- similar to how I installed other versions. Just watch while changing disks, it sometimes looks like it's about to crash but isn't.

That newspaper guy throws some serious shade on Landford.
I honestly don't know what I think about Landford. Is he resposibly for the Donner incident? Well, to an amount, but most of the incident was due to bad luck and not heading to the trail in time. But people trusted him and trusted that he had explored that route and thus it was safe, so yeah, I do think he has some responsibility over that.
And the Whitmen? I think both the Whitmen and the Natives were wrong. I don't take sides on that matter.

    • @TunaSpleen
      @TunaSpleen 11 днів тому

Lansford Hastings looked at a map famed explorer John Fremont made in 1845 shortly before Hastings published his emigrants' guide, and from that map he created his own cutoff that ran south of the Great Salt Lake and claimed it would cut hundreds of miles off the journey despite not having explored that geographic area himself beforehand. Fremont nearly died the first time he crossed that section of desert. A colleague of Hastings who traveled with him AND was a mutual friend of one of the guys in the Donner Party actually ran into them during the first part of their journey west and insisted they not take the Hastings Cutoff because that route would only lead to death and despair but they were pigheaded and refused to listen to reason. Even more infighting within their wagon train caused the families to all break down into separate units that refused to work together, and the whole group was majority older men, women, and young children so they didn't have enough able bodied young men to do the heavy labor required to get everyone safely through the Sierra Nevadas in time. I'd say the end result is maybe 15% Hastings' fault and 85% the Donner Party's fault, but Hastings couldn't be held liable for multiple reasons: 1) they weren't in US territory anymore, they were on Mexican land. 2) Legal enforcement was incredibly weak in the 1840s. 3) Modern lawyers would argue that Hastings did not have a legal duty to see the Donners safely through to California--anyone can publish a book of bad advice, that doesn't mean they're legally responsible for every idiot who actually follows it. Lansford was originally a lawyer from Ohio, so he of anyone would have already known this.
