Great to see some DMC content. Bosses like Griffin are much more enjoyable on Dante Must Die difficulty that buffs the boss by a massive amount making DT guns far less effective and OP. Same for Nelo Angelo, Nelo on high difficulties is one of the best bosses in the series. The complaints about the bosses being too easy and gone once you play on a higher difficulty. Since DMC is based around replayaablity since Capcom balance it out really well.
Another fun fact about Phantom's 2nd fight: you can make him jump on the stained glass window on the ground repeatedly so he'll crash through and end the fight. Hilarious. And during Nightmare's you can get absorbed by it and you have to fight either Phantom, Griffon, or Nelo Angelo depending on which of the Nightmare fights it is. If you beat the boss you'll wipe out a HUGE chunk of Nightmare's health bar. Anyway, cool to see you doing a series for DMC. The series has always made bonkers bosses and the first game was a good start. I still remember getting through Level 4 and doing the gauntlet of Phantom, Shadow, and Nelo Angelo which jump-started my long-atrophied reflexes from playing a generation of RPGs and survival horror games. My favorite boss of the first is probably Nelo Angelo due to his varied moveset and feeling like it was a fight between two warriors.
I think that the normal difficult is easier for the player, the Dante Must Die is a lot harder for the player and the hard mode is equally for player and Boss
DMC has always been graphically amazing for it's time. Capcom's engines are usually made for Resident Evil and because DMC shares a lot of it's design with RE it fits well with any Capcom engine.
It has some of the strongest art direction and visual designs in the series IMO. The relatively small size of the environments and preset camera angles also helped - they could focus on details and use some clever tricks here and there.
I was minblown when this got released back in 2001. Seriously I played it over a thousand times... The sequels never really got me like the first game did.
You do know you're not supposed to use health items it's lowers your rank it's supposed to make you choose between buying skills to get better or fixing being bad because you get hit too much
Yeah items shouldn't be used unless you're really bad and you just want to beat the game and be done with it. I'm glad they're being removed from 5 cause they didn't really help you improve at all.
Playing DMC and using the items is the equivalent of playing Dark Souls and summoning 3 phantoms for every single boss. If you thought the game was too easy, thats why, you were essentially playing it on baby mode. I imagine you're grade for each level was probably pretty low since the game penalises your score if you use items.
@@Ender41948 The game literally penalises you for using them, lowering your score. The most recent game has removed them all together. I can't think of a bigger indicator for you to not use something. They're a crutch, and he'll enjoy the game way more not using any of them.
@@Ender41948 Somebody who's been a fan of this franchise since the first game came out. The game is built specifically for this stuff, if you don't do it you won't enjoy the game as much. It's that simple. It's like playing Tetris and having a good time stacking the shapes as high as you can. That's not what the games built to do and the game will penalise you for doing it, like here.
@@Conflict-ff5pi I genuinely believe that to be ridiculous even after so many years of playing these games the fight should provide a challenge even with items you shouldn't punish a player for using something you provided them
For future reference in the other games, higher difficulties add new moves and layers to certain bosses. You might wanna consider bumping the game up to Very Hard or Dante Must Die for 3 if you want to see everything some of the bosses have to offer.
@@user-ei3ro9xf1d What difficulty did you play on? Play on DMD, DT is best designed for that difficulty. It is commonly accepted that the original has the best DMD mode in the series, so, you might enjoy it.
13:55 Not the point of that line, he's saying no purely evil demon can show human emotion, thereby saying that Trish isn't evil and is more human than she seems.
When you get to DmC 2013, play the X1/PS4 Definitive Editions. It's tremendously better than the way the PC version, given extra balancing and mechanics.
i will say, i think the first DMC shines when playing through all of the difficulties as i think it is one of the greatest designed difficulties in video games. Very much enhancing the game
I didn’t know about this til a few months ago but you can jump on Phantom’s back and he really can’t do shit about it while you beat his ass. Makes the fight a lot easier.
I'm gonna go with Nelo Angelo 3 as the best fight, and probably Mundus 1 as the worst - and both of these for the same reason, actually! I was watching a video about boss design (I think it was Design Doc's series, which I highly recommend), and they said that a truly satisfying final boss would test the culmination of skills that you've acquired/learned up to that point. Vergil in DMC3 is the ultimate example of this, but in this game, I think it's Nelo Angelo. You've had two fights to learn his patterns specifically, and the rest of the game has been spent observing enemy tells, and then honing your parrying and dodging in response, all of which prepares you for this battle. Conversely, Mundus 1 throws you into a style of gameplay that you've never seen before, having absolutely nothing to do with anything you've learned thus far. It's a gimmick, and I hate to say it, but the second phase isn't much better. The platforms upon which you're standing put you at a distance, which essentially makes your melee weapons useless unless you're in DT. They very obviously want you to use the Sparda at this part, and in a game about frenetic action and slick style, taking away my options takes away the fun. I still enjoyed all of the boss fights in this game, but for goodness' sake, if you're going to get experimental, don't do it on the final boss.
He's a demon that mostly takes a human form, and slays other demons? HIPOCRITE ALERT!!! Sure they killed his family but that doesn't give him the right to murder all of them.
You neglected to mention you could jump on Phantoms back and slap his fireballs back at him or make it explode in his mouth by attack his face while he charges it for more damage. Also that you can make Phantom kill himself by making him jump on the glass 3 times in the final fight. Did that on DMD because I didn't have time for his crap lol.
I’m way late to this, but I feel the need to point out an ongoing gimmick for the three fights with Nightmare. He doesn’t have have one blue ball to hit, but two. And they have a bit of a condition system going on that’s reliant on how often you hit each one across the three fights. You want to have the easiest time from one battle to the next, you gotta pound that ass super hard (Layman’s terms: Ifrit melee, charged up, in Devils Trigger) to keep the hit counter down. Because once Nightmare’s two ass cheek weakpoints are all red and cracked in half, you’re stuck with scratch damage from that point on and into any future encounters. Also, the Nightmare fights have a time-saving measure built into the liquid form. If you stand into the Nightmare’s ‘flaccid’ form like a dumbass, Dante gets sucked into a hellish dreamscape by it; in the nightmare of the Nightmare, you face a herd of those floating skull enemies and then get pitted against watered-down illusionary copy of the most relevant boss at that point in the game (aka, Phantom’s first fight in the first encounter, Griffon’s second skirmish in the second bout, and the second duel with Nelo Angelo/Vergil in the one where Trish butts in). You beat this optional gauntlet, Dante busts back out of Nightmare like a boss and lops off a quarter of its health. Only works once per battle though.
This deserves a like and honestly to be pinned. I always loved the mechanic of Nightmare taking Dante to that otherworld with his Phantom Enemy's. It adds a ton of depth to the fight and it's not something you'd think to do at first to charge in while he's goo.
Honestly, i think Mundus is worse than both Nelo and Nightmare. I love the fights they offer, (even if trivial with DT) but Mundus just felt too weak. He had an interesting first stage but overall he wasn't too good in my opinion. A big thing was that it just seemed too out of place, and i don't mind that, but it kinda took away from his battles. I think fighting Nelo and Nightmare felt more rewarding too. Nightmare was kinda hard at first, and in the final battle, plus he had a unique battle, and Nelo may not be hard, but he had enough variety and showed up just enough that it never felt out of place. Love the video, and hopefully this sounded like a conversation and not a rude comment.
Fun fact - At the beginning of all the nightmare boss fights, run into it when it's a pile of green goo. You'll then be absorbed into some other dimension or something and you'll fight a few skulls and a easier version of Phantom/Griffon/Nelo Angelo. Once you beat them you'll be transported back to the nightmare boss fight and it will take damage for around a third of its health!
Massive like for the Python reference. My favourite boss was always Nelo Angelo followed by Phantom, absolutely hate the three other bastards. Way too hard in the hardest mode for a noob like myself.
Here's what my personal ranking for every boss in the entire series would be, worst to best: 40: Infestant/Infested Chopper (DMC2) 39: Noctpteran (DMC2) 38: Jokatgulm (DMC2) 37: Argosax The Chaos (DMC2) 36: Tateobesu (DMC2) 35: Orangguerra (DMC2) 34: Phantom (DMC2) 33: Trismagia (DMC2) 32: Arius (DMC2) 31: Furiataurus (DMC2) 30: Nefasturris/Nefascapitis (DMC2) 29: Bolverk (DMC2) 28: Containment Room (DMC4) 27: Arkham (DMC3) 26: Tartarussian/Plutonian (DMC2) 25: Gigapede (DMC3) 24: Echidna (DMC4) 23: Geryon (DMC3) 22: Lady (DMC3) 21: Hell Vanguard (DMC3) 20: Bael/Dagon (DMC4) 19: The Saviour (DMC4) 18: Leviathan (DMC3) 17: Griffon (DMC1) 16: Nightmare (DMC1) 15: The Despair Embodied (DMC2) 14: Beowulf (DMC3) 13: Doppelgänger (DMC3) 12: Agnus (DMC4) 11: Nevan (DMC3) 10: Sanctus/Sanctus Diabollica (DMC4) 9: Berial (DMC4) 8: Phantom (DMC1) 7: Dante (DMC4) 6: Nelo Angelo (DMC1) 5: Cerberus (DMC3) 4: Agni & Rudra (DMC3) 3: Mundus (DMC1) 2: Angelo Credo (DMC4) 1: Vergil (DMC3) Anybody else care to make their own rankings? I'd like to know what other people think! :D EDIT: In hindsight, The Despair Embodied deserved a much higher ranking than I gave him, so I've switched his position a bit higher.
Obviously it was retroactively written into the story but I think Nelo Angelo being easy to cheese by predicting his moves owes to a sort of degeneration that results in Vergil from Mundus's influence.
Here are 2 little things you can try next time tou fight Phantom: 1) you van jump on his ass and smack it for a while 2) the fire ball he spits can be reflected by hitting it with the sword. The timing is extremelly precise, but well worth it
I don't know why everybody has a negative thing about the camera, after all these years I've never had any problems with the camera on this game. It proves it's still the best one in it's genre. New follow ups are alright but the way they made comboing so complex is not really my thing. The first one had simple combos and yet made you feel badass and stylish.
Your ranking is... I mean, I get it's your opinion, but. 5. Mundus. Yeah yeah, the world at stake, whatever, it's just too *easy* and basic to be a final boss. The first phase is a breeze, the second phase, DT + that long ass meele range, and the third phase is just a shooter. 4. Nightmare. To frustrating and annoying for my taste. First fight, I didn't knew what the hell I was doing, I even got swalloed and deleted a quarter of its HP by killing a Phantom with no HP inside. Second fight, I knew what I had to do, but it was still boring and annoying. Thrid fight, the worst of them all. Plus, you can fuck it over by just turning the lights on and spamming Alastor's DT Lighting. Seriously, it deals TOO MUCH cheap damage. 3. Griffon. The first and third fights are decent enough, but the second is boring to me. 2. Phantom. He is a boss you can fight up to not 2, not even 3, but up to *FIVE TIMES* (First boss, two alley chases wich I count as encounters with him because I fought him on both alleys), Final fight, and, the fake Phantom inside Nightmare 1. I don't like him as much because I was sick of him halfway through. 1. Nelo Angelo. Need I say more. It is the best boss in the game by far. Overall, DMC 1 has pretty weak bossfights imo
Btw, for the second phase of Mundus, in the lava pit, you can use sword attacks against him. When in Devil Trigger, the Sparda sword's reach is greatly extended. What most people do is go by his feet in the lava and attack him. Since you're in DT you don't take as much damage from the lava. What I did is stand on the highest and closest platform and spam Stinger (which has one of the longest reach) and since you are basically at the same level as his heart (?) / core (?) it does a ton of damage, making this part of the fight very easy.
You poor bastard. You have to go through the horror that is DMC2, before getting to the masterpiece of 3. And then the best gameplay of the series with 4. Best you just forget about the reboot though, looking at DMC5, Capcom sure has.
he does know that DT swordstrikes are more powerful than DT shots, right? also: taunts refill your DT, You can get on top of nightmare while he's shooting the Ice laser and hack on his core, buy air raid, you can DT helmbreaker on phantom ,there are more than one sword combos(you do them by pausing taps after 2nd hit and depending on the timing of the pause you get a different combo),there's also shotgun jump canceling

Yeah the final Helo Angelo fight on hard/DMD is honestly nerve-wracking
I disagree about Griffin. DMD final Griffin really makes the obnoxious camera of that fight so much worse. I hated that encounter.
Shit-ton of replayability.
"Devil Never Cry"
Why are we on DMC5 when we can be on DNC5 :D
Play on a higher difficulty it's way more fun
I think that the normal difficult is easier for the player, the Dante Must Die is a lot harder for the player and the hard mode is equally for player and Boss
Ahh yes, good ol Nightmare..... fighting an angry jello monster in a closet....
Good times.
Holy moly this game looks good for a game from 2001
DMC has always been graphically amazing for it's time. Capcom's engines are usually made for Resident Evil and because DMC shares a lot of it's design with RE it fits well with any Capcom engine.
@@M7S4I5L8V2A The first DMC game was intended to be a Resident Evil game until it veered so far off course that it became it's own thing entirely.
You do know you're not supposed to use health items it's lowers your rank it's supposed to make you choose between buying skills to get better or fixing being bad because you get hit too much
You're one of those guys aren't you?
Hallow Venixya I'm just saying it how it really it is
Yeah items shouldn't be used unless you're really bad and you just want to beat the game and be done with it. I'm glad they're being removed from 5 cause they didn't really help you improve at all.
@@FiveCats. are they really?
@@FiveCats. hmm didn't know that 😮

For the love of god, do yourself a favour and skip DMC2.
he has to get some of that Infected Chopper love
Bucket Your profile pic is great
Bucket but but it came with the collection
Playing DMC and using the items is the equivalent of playing Dark Souls and summoning 3 phantoms for every single boss. If you thought the game was too easy, thats why, you were essentially playing it on baby mode. I imagine you're grade for each level was probably pretty low since the game penalises your score if you use items.
"Hey don't use this thing the game lets you do and makes you buy for the privilege of using to help you."
@@Ender41948 The game literally penalises you for using them, lowering your score. The most recent game has removed them all together. I can't think of a bigger indicator for you to not use something. They're a crutch, and he'll enjoy the game way more not using any of them.
And who are you to judge how much someone will enjoy a game doing it YOUR way?
@@Ender41948 Somebody who's been a fan of this franchise since the first game came out. The game is built specifically for this stuff, if you don't do it you won't enjoy the game as much. It's that simple. It's like playing Tetris and having a good time stacking the shapes as high as you can. That's not what the games built to do and the game will penalise you for doing it, like here.
@@Conflict-ff5pi I genuinely believe that to be ridiculous even after so many years of playing these games the fight should provide a challenge even with items you shouldn't punish a player for using something you provided them
Hint: in the second phantom fight you can end the boss fight extremely quick by baiting him to jump on the glass floor
"On the easiest difficulty, all the bosses can be trivialized" *clap*
For future reference in the other games, higher difficulties add new moves and layers to certain bosses. You might wanna consider bumping the game up to Very Hard or Dante Must Die for 3 if you want to see everything some of the bosses have to offer.
>Nightmare placed above any other boss

11:52 Devil May Cry : a game of tsunderes
Before watching the video Vergil is 1#
Oops this video is only about DMC 1🙃
Yeah its DMC1 but it sucks to see Vergil at 3rd place instead of number 1
Skull Knight I didn’t like his boss fight in DMC1
But in DMC3 Vergil is one of the best boss fights in gaming history
@@user-ei3ro9xf1d Nelo Angelo 3 was a great bossfight. Just as good as Vergil 3 IMO.
alphonse elric i didn’t like DMC1 because it’s too hard with the yellow orbs and low health and too easy with the devil trigger🙃
Griffon is bugged in the HD versions, his chest never opens
When you get to DmC 2013, play the X1/PS4 Definitive Editions. It's tremendously better than the way the PC version, given extra balancing and mechanics.
The reason why Dante was upset when Trish sacrificed herself to save him was because Trish sacrificing herself for him reminded him of his mom
i will say, i think the first DMC shines when playing through all of the difficulties as i think it is one of the greatest designed difficulties in video games. Very much enhancing the game
You can knock the meteor back into Phantom's mouth with your sword.
shiet the last time I came this early my ex gf left me
Awesome video. but I think on DMD difficult that list should be different lol
Love the new logo! Man I haven't actually played Devil May Cry before but happy to see you cover it.
5. Griffon
4. Phantom
3. Nightmare
2. Mundus
1. Nelo Angelo
I didn’t know about this til a few months ago but you can jump on Phantom’s back and he really can’t do shit about it while you beat his ass. Makes the fight a lot easier.
"I have always been a fan of doppleganger fights when done right"
You will have a BLAST with Devil May Cry 3.
That line.... Its just the best thing ever xD
I highly recommend trying Griffon on a harder difficulty, especially the 2nd fight on the boat.
No. I’m currently doing a dante must die run for the first time. That second fight almost made me throw my controller at the wall. Terrible fight
New logo Dad?
He's a demon that mostly takes a human form, and slays other demons? HIPOCRITE ALERT!!!
Sure they killed his family but that doesn't give him the right to murder all of them.
Half Demon but hey who cares.
"He looks like a green Ditto that someone threw trash into."
So...Garbodor?
After needing out over this series constantly on your streams with other viewers I’m so pleased you’ve decided to take the series on yourself
Play Dante must die you'll change that opinion
You forgot to mention you can defeat Phantom 2 by making him land on then stained glass in the middle of the room over and over.
"DT melts Griffon"
Well, in DMD Griffin will melt you)
8:47 this is the best explanation possible for this fight 🤣🤣
I'm so ecstatic you are back!
The best way to deal with nightmare imo is to get his orb thing to come out go dt and sit on nightmare while meleeing him to death
Massive like for the Python reference. My favourite boss was always Nelo Angelo followed by Phantom, absolutely hate the three other bastards. Way too hard in the hardest mode for a noob like myself.

Anybody else care to make their own rankings? I'd like to know what other people think! :D
EDIT: In hindsight, The Despair Embodied deserved a much higher ranking than I gave him, so I've switched his position a bit higher.
You... you put Nightmare, *AND MUNDUS* over Nelo Angelo?
Obviously it was retroactively written into the story but I think Nelo Angelo being easy to cheese by predicting his moves owes to a sort of degeneration that results in Vergil from Mundus's influence.
Here are 2 little things you can try next time tou fight Phantom:
1) you van jump on his ass and smack it for a while
2) the fire ball he spits can be reflected by hitting it with the sword. The timing is extremelly precise, but well worth it
It wasn’t Space, Mundus creates a Universal dimension (stated by the Creator) to show off his awesome raw power.......then uses weird red spears.
In the second phantom battle if he jumps on the glass to much, It breaks and you get an instant victory
He dares it ? He did it dude. Next DeMod xDD
When phantom's tail is up you can air slam his booty, so yes, you can smack the booty
Edit: also you can hold square to get DT shots outside of DT
I don't know why everybody has a negative thing about the camera, after all these years I've never had any problems with the camera on this game. It proves it's still the best one in it's genre. New follow ups are alright but the way they made comboing so complex is not really my thing. The first one had simple combos and yet made you feel badass and stylish.
Can't wait for more
YEAH!! Dmod I'm so hyped for dmc 5 and I'm so glad you're playing this series
i dont think he even discovered the blobs ability to take you into another world and fight mini his versions of the other bosses.
I don't think he did either lol.
@@ReverofEnolaand that it restores the hit count of nightmare's orbs, that is if you didn't break them already
Second ranking in a row of a game I've yet to play... Oh well, it'll be there once I do
I love the new logo my man I think it fits your channel alot better then your last one(but that was good too)
I love you’re ranking videos 👍
I remember requesting this video months ago glad to see you actually make it, glad you are back
Btw, for the second phase of Mundus, in the lava pit, you can use sword attacks against him.
Not gonna lie, that monologue when Trish saved Dante was as cringy as it gets, but I still found it kinda cute and heartwarming.
You poor bastard. You have to go through the horror that is DMC2, before getting to the masterpiece of 3. And then the best gameplay of the series with 4. Best you just forget about the reboot though, looking at DMC5, Capcom sure has.
I'm surprised goo ball was number two. What with DeMod's intense feelings towards ganks. Figured he'd be all "gankity gank gank gank gank FUCK!"
Demodcracy really out here not knowing DMC is a parody of all action movies that exist
technically, you can hit Phantom's ass when the tail is out, the lava part of his abdomen is a weak point.
he does know that DT swordstrikes are more powerful than DT shots, right?
also: taunts refill your DT, You can get on top of nightmare while he's shooting the Ice laser and hack on his core, buy air raid, you can DT helmbreaker on phantom ,there are more than one sword combos(you do them by pausing taps after 2nd hit and depending on the timing of the pause you get a different combo),there's also shotgun jump canceling
"It Looks cool so shut up and enjoy it."
I have a feeling thats the secret motto of the series
At least it's good to know the original Devil May Cry is a game where the bosses get better with each new appearance in battle.
