    I live on 10 acres as do my neighbors. 8 acres are planted in alfalfa and 2 acres are a mix of house, gardens & fruit trees where we keep 10 hives. I have 2 additional hives for splits or swarms. My neighbors are very happy to have our bees in their gardens as well as honey that we share. It was works for us and helps bring our community together. Win-Win

    I bought 2 new 5 box hives from amazon, the cheapest, without frames, for just over $100 each. This is enough for several hives with only needing, or making, more deeps (each came with 1 deep) bottom boards and roofs... purchased frames and foundation separately and assembled myself... researched enough to know what is actually needed and the sought out the best for the least money... Ready to go in the spring.

    I’m a new beek this year after putting it off for about 6 years. I initially bought a nuc and a package. Before they were ready for spring pickup, I figured if I was going to be able to get a frame or two of honey it would have probably been better to get 2 nucs so I ordered a second nuc. Before the bees were ready, i purchased 3 hive kits (kit was 1 deep 2 med 10 frame) and figured i would save some money by getting 1 assembled and use it as a guide to assemble the other 2 kits. After running into a few hurdles in the assembly process, i bought more boxes and frames already assembled since i was getting close to bee day. After getting the bees installed, I still have a living room full of extra boxes and frames. So again I figured I might as well buy another nuc and put a forth hive together 😔. So next weekend I will be setting up the forth hive. The cost certainly added up quickly to a couple of grand and still climbing 😩. I better at least get a pound of honey out of all of this lol... it will be the most expensive honey I’ve ever tasted 🍯

    Great talk, thank you. I reuse lumber that I have scrounged for my boxes and cover/bottoms. I just make sure the wood has not been treated with any chemicals. I cut small downed trees to make stands. You can often stop by construction sites and as if they have scrape wood.

    thanks for the video David and Sherry. This is what I am thinking about now. I am so excited today. I checked my hive and saw that the bees are enjoying the fondant pattie I put on top of the inner cover. There were quite a number of bees underneath it (being accessed through the hole in the inner cover). As a first year beekeeper, I am hoping they make it thru Winter. So far, so good.

    I've got a horizontal hive for two colonies. Got my first colony and I'm planning to grow naturally. So will split my first colony make two, then will have a couple more hives via natural splits etc. Then stop and have to let them rip and swarm or sell nucs.

    I'm guilty of this. Last year was my first year. I have 2 colonies and 1 backup empty hive (3 total). I just purchased 2 more hive kits (totaling 5). I purchased 2 new nucs coming in April. I'm not sure if the nucs will go into the new hives or go into the 2 existing hives if they don't make it. I'm going to be a better keeper this year. I'm leveling up!!!

    I still have and use my Smoker I got back in 1993, so they last forever ;-) I started with two frame hand crank and moved up to a 20 frame when i had 60 hives. I got the 20 frame for $550 back in 1998 not sure what they cost these days, getting started now days would be so hard, cost I remember getting 3 pound packages for $25.

      You take good care of your equipment. Nice job. Nowadays you cannot even buy 1 queen for $25. Of course when I 12 gas was 36 cents a gallon.🤪

    I really enjoyed this video. It hit home. - I'm a small-time beekeeper that wants to stay on the small. Maximum 8-10 colonies. I had several swarms last year and went from 3 to 9 colonies. I tried selling them, but I had to pull my post literally that same day because I was getting beat up for selling bees. "you don't know what you're doing", "did you treat for mites", "Did you check for EFB/AFB". It went on all day long. So how do we stay small?? You said several times that you can't keep them from swarming so you might as well split. Then what? If locals pound you for trying to sell them, what's the other option???

    Foul Brood is scary because burning all your equipment can be costly! Frames and foundation costs around 2 bucks each, its not worth the time to make frames considering the price of wood today. A smoker and hive tool is about all you need. I used 1/2 inch plywood as a top cover and bottom board when all the equipment was backordered last spring. All summer long, I was picking up more boxes and other pieces for expansion to make double deep colonies and extra honey supers, yeah its expensive to get started. BTW: I avoided the bargain hives online and went to a commercial beekeeper supply to avoid any mixups with incompatible woodware.

    Dumb Question Here! Y'all say don't use someone else's old frame, but if you buy a nuc, are you getting New frames or the junky ones that the producer is trying to get rid of? I brought a nuc about 5-years ago, besides the marking I wrote on top of the frames I can still tell them from the very dark wax, not trash, but brownish color wax. They were aggressive Russian bees and when I requeen them I could get within 20 feet without being attacked. I might go back to screen bottom boards to see if that helps with my issues.

    • @beek
      @beek  2 роки тому +1

      Nuc suppliers will be all over the board on this one. However, our hives have to be inspected and have a health certificate from the IL Dept of Agriculture. I would say a nuc producer tries to keep the frames between 1-3 years old.

      My lifelong love of horses led me into a horse breeding and training outfit for several years and sometimes had 10-12 project horses or young horses. It gets to where you no longer enjoy and is oppressive to have too many horses (hives). I thoroughly enjoy only having 4 horses these days for enjoyment only and getting back to basics. I agree like most trouble we find ourselves in, it is usually ego-based.

    I dont have room so i have no choice but to stop after two hives . I use garden gloves . A handcrank honey extractor for our first hive bought in june 2021 is fine. I bought the extractor before i got our bees . I wanted to make sure we were ready for them. We had a plastic tablecloth under the extractor and didnt have it open enough so some honey and wax got onto the floor . We did it in the house to avoid bees flying around us. When we do something at the hive one bee always gets into the house even after we check one another and it ends up in my bedroom. We looked for sugar on sale also ahead of getting the bees. I was very happy to have the bee escape board just before harvesting because the bees are nasty at that time protecting their honey. I hope this helps someone . I got a free online copy of a book i think was called bee keeping for dummies. It was reall helpful . I was afraid something might happen to my computer or the copy i received so i started documenting in my own book things of importance . So i can flip back if i need to and its easily available . I made dollar store hats with camping mosqitoe jackets . I then purchased the jacket and hood on amazon. Its better than the hats i made

    David this was great Hi Sherry nice to meet u. I am not in a bee club I do not want to have to prove any thing to any body. I did buy 6 nucs trough them about 3 years ago and I got took. they came with no queens and I trusted them but that is another story. I started with 1 hive in 2014, and now have 37 I wanted this many because I know I am going to lose some always do I want the honey. I wanted 50 to start with but queens failed and I combined hives to my present number of 37 I have so many people that want the honey I cant supply it. but it is a lot of work.. I am going to save some money by making my own queens no buying them total waist of money I think I told u before I get these queens in and the hives let them lay for a day or so then replace them or I get these queens in and they do not lay at all or they fail Last year I bought 10 nucs and 20 queens, I just flushed my money down the toilet. any way yes I agree u can have to many hives I want 20 good ones and maybe I will get them this spring I hope I have honey coming out my ears.. My best year I had 5 hives and got 15 gal of honey and that was just great. my extractor is a 4 frame hand crank that is the total equipment I have my honey house is wonderful it is my kitchen and I make out fine with it... It is very nice to meet your wife and again this video was great. Hope u keep making them hope your wife shares more have a Blessed day
