  • Of the many ways Earth is polluted, light pollution may be the least talked about. It's not an illusion; astronomers measure it from one to nine on the Bortle scale, and earlier this year, one study suggested that light pollution may be causing spring to come earlier. This short film, shot mainly in California by Sriram Murali, goes through all the levels of the scale, showing how the view of the cosmos gets better in less light-polluted areas.

    This video is NOT exaggerated.
    I went on a wilderness canoe trip in Canada a few years ago and one night their was no moon and no clouds and I saw EVERYTHING. No one believed me but I could see everything... the colors, the milky way, and many more stars than I though possible with the naked eye. It inspired me to become a night photographer. Don't believe what anyone says, the sky CAN look like this and it is life changing.

    • @river750777
      @river750777 7 років тому +160

      "This video is NOT exaggerated. "
      Yes it is.
      It literally stacks the light of an image on top of itself many times to make it look brighter than it is.

    • @ethand2731
      @ethand2731 7 років тому +617

      You are right and wrong at the same time.
      Yea they either had stacked images or a bunch of 30 secondish exposure photographs in order for the camera to capture the stars. They most likely saturated the shots a little also, but that is necessary to make it look real. Note I am talking about the camera and not the human eye.
      The human eye is able to see all this stuff without having to mess with the exposure or adjusting the saturation. Until you go out in the middle of no where (I was 70 miles away from the closest building with electricity) and look up at the sky then there is no moon, you cant say I am wrong. The night sky just looked fake with how colorful and crystal clear all the stars where. It changed my life man.

    • @river750777
      @river750777 7 років тому +85

      I literally live in a 0 light pollution zone, I know that it looks like, and it's not anything like this video.
      If I were to put in on the scale this video is using, 5-6 at best.

    • @ethand2731
      @ethand2731 7 років тому +285

      I don't know then. Maybe it was because there less atmosphere close to the poles so what I saw was cleaner? Maybe my eyes where properly adjusted to the dark? All I know is what I saw.
      If you actually do live in a 0 light pollution zone try this. Head out far away from any lights on a night where their is no moon and wait without any lights. Late around midnight you should see this and your eyes should be adjusted enough to see this.
      All I know is what happened in my situation. In the middle of the night I woke up and had to take a shit and laid their for a while, gazing off into the woods and trying to decide if it was worth the effort of getting out of my warm sleeping bag. Finally I got up and and went to go find a nice tree. While walking over I remember someone telling me to look up if I was ever up in the middle of the night, and that is what I saw.
      Like I said, I dont know if I got the perfect conditions or what, but it is totally possible to see a night sky like that.

    I grew up in a small town in Wyoming, and got to enjoy the awesome sky every night. Always had an appreciation for the universe, and how we're just some tiny speck of dust in the grand scheme of things. Then I moved out of state to a large city for college and suddenly it was gone, and I realized how easy it is to lose perspective of things. When I've tried to have conversations with friends about it or talk about the sky, no one cares, and they have no idea what they're missing. It's a bit sad.

      You do not actually see the sky like this, these photos are taken via long exposure using a camera. But the sky in areas with low light pollution is still very nice, with thousands of stars visible and the milky way being seen as a gray band across the sky, as long as the moon hasnt risen. But in areas with nearly no light pollution, the sky looks very beautiful, almost like the pictures, just a bit less colorful.

    SAVING THE DARK
    Millions of children will never see a sky full of stars. The night skies remind us of our place in the Universe. It gives us identity, makes us feel a connection. Think of all the great minds that gazed up at the night sky and were inspired by it. We've lost the potential for thousands of great minds.

    I would go out every night that I wasn't on watch, onto the fantail of my ship, every night to see this as we crossed the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Having grown up in a heavily light-polluted area, I'd never seen anything like it and I never have since. Our industrialized society has robbed us of such a basic part of our shared humanity - the ability to look up at the night sky and see something greater than ourselves, something that isn't the darkness that we hide from. Thank you for bringing back this lovely memory, and for helping to inspire my children to both observe the beauty of space, and to preserve the natural beauty of the Earth so that we can continue to observe the stars.

    Our eyes can't see the colors of the milky at night without the aid of a camera. I live in a level 2 zone and I'm no stranger to using a camera to see the colors of the night sky. Simply put, the cones in our eyes need a certain amount of light to see color. Very few objects in the night sky emit enough light to see those colors. I've been to a few observatories through out the States and never seen that much color. Just look at the back ground of the videos and see how detail you get. Last time I was outside during a new moon phase, I could hardly make out any detail nearby. It's a great video showcasing what is above us every night. Looking at the planets and celestial objects through a telescope is an amazing sight.

      Light pollution covers, + a cut off time for light would produce this effect. What's important to note is that, coming from someone living in a LP1 zone, it won't look anything like this. Beautiful for sure, no or little colors, and oftentimes obscured. The best times to view it is in the summer when everyone has their lights on late at night unfortunately, so unless you're much more hillbilly than me you won't get to experience the core very well like you get to in this video.

      If the first thing you think about after seeing a beautiful sky is "LSD," you are pretty much hopeless. It's something that's supposed to take you inward and make you appreciate life as it is and not through some filter. How out of touch do you have to be, where you can't even enjoy reality without artificial enhancement. Truly sad...

Unfortunately, financial situations have forced me to move just north of Indianapolis, which happens to be the largest and brightest city in the entire state. There are lights everywhere I turn. That same trip I went to death valley we didn't stay until night however, I'll also never forget this moment. As we were leaving we drove right into a huge rainstorm(this was in the summer too). After we drove out of it and death valley was behind us we saw a rainbow their that stretched across the horizon. The one time I went to death valley I experienced a rainstorm and a rainbow. What are the chances?

      The Messenger Mohamed, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: The distance between the earth and the first heaven is a journey of 500 years. Between the first heaven and the second heaven is a journey of 500 years. Between the second heaven and the sixth heaven is a journey of 500 years. Between the third heaven and the fourth heaven is a journey of 500 years. Between the fourth heaven and the fifth heaven is a journey of 500 years. Between the fifth heaven and the sixth heaven is a journey of 500 years, and between the sixth heaven and the seventh heaven is a journey of 500 years.
      And he, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, says, and the seven heavens in the chair are only like a ring thrown into the desert, and the chair is what the Lord puts his feet on.
      And the chair in the throne is only like a ring thrown in a desert land
      The throne is the place where the Lord resides
