I absolutely loved my play of this. The person that brought it to game night has the max chrome edition so it has player powers and some added spots in the board that do different things. 2 people got eliminated and I just barely managed to squeak out a victory by crossing the finish line first.
I think my favorite mechanism is that if your car is on a panel that gets removed because the lead car gets a 3 panel lead they get eliminated. I was able to eliminate a couple cars this way (probably wouldn't have been able to do that without the player power). Such a fun game and it will be on my Christmas list this year.

I love this game! My favorite part of it is actually the luck. Most games really minimize luck (and with good reason!), but with THIS game...I can't help myself. I'm oten confronted with a choice between a smart/safe choice, and an exciting choice, and I'm probably picking "exciting".
I KNOW I should stay away from the edge, and away from hazards. But when an alternative is to slam into someone, and ONE of us is going of the edge, or potentially blasting off, I just get so weapped up in the cinematic theme.
More than any other game, this one lets me relax and slide away from playing optimally. I still WANT to win, but I want amazing moments more!

Hi Jamey, not sure if you will see this in time but there is currently a demo for a game on steam called “Blue Prince” that I think would you’d enjoy and would be a great addition to your favourite mechanics series.
It’s a puzzle/mystery game where you are exploring a house by drafting 3 tiles and then using board game tile laying mechanics to connect rooms.
Additionally, there is a time management system where moving through rooms costs you resources and some rooms can only be added using keys and gems. Each room has a special ability and items.
Reminiscent of Betrayal at House on the Hill but with escape room type puzzles
The demo is ending soon though

Man, on paper, I'm not sure if this game is for me, but everyone speaks so highly of it--I really want to give it a try!

I think it's a good one to try at a convention before buying. While it isn't a game I need to own for repeated plays, it was a lot of fun to play at Geekway to the West.

@@jameystegmaier Seems like it might also be a very "group dependent" game...

Thunder Road Vendetta is my favourite game of 2023, and given the new expansion due in November, I think I can sneakily count it again for 2024! I just adore playing it! It makes me laugh every time. I think my favourite mechanism is the Slam, and specifically, the fact that a Slam doesn't, in itself, cause damage. A Slam can result in a car taking damage by being pushed into a hazard or an impassable terrain, but, because it doesn't always cause damage, it encourages players to Slam into each other "for a laugh"! And the resultant Pinball effect of cars slamming cars into cars, into other cars can be hilarious, moreso when it ends without a single car actually taking any damage!
One note that the image you used from BGG happens to bring up- the white helicopter is pointing backwards in that image. While the rules never explicitly state you can't do that, they don't allow for it either, and co-designer Rob Daviau has confirmed in the BGG forums that all vehicles must always be facing forward.

I think my favorite mechanism is the modular track (in a 3+ player game) where the last piece of track is removed when a new piece is placed- and those cars lagging behind are eliminated.
The different pieces of track also adds variability to the game.
I do have to admit, I bounced off this game pretty hard. It all seemed like a bunch of random nonsense, lol.

Thanks! I think we played correctly with the helicopters (we just didn't know which part of their miniature was the "front").

@@jameystegmaier I'm sure you did fine. The helicopter ruling actually came up in a recent game I played. In order for a player to shoot the vehicle they wanted to, the only available space was in front of the target, so they had to place their helicopter pointing backwards. At the time, we went by the Rule of Cool to keep the game going smoothly, and looked up the BGG forums and any official FAQs after the fact so we can stick to the rules for future games.

Awesome game, and I really don't mind the player elimination. Game is usually almost done as soon as the first person goes out. At four players it's just wild.

I like that it forces a timer on how long the game can last after a player is eliminated. In a 3-4 player game, you can use an endless number of road tiles. However, once a player is eliminated, the furthest road tile in play becomes the finish line.
