For people who live in apartments who cannot grow their own food, potatoes are, so far, still affordable and nutritious. When dehydrated, large bags of potatoes do not have to go to waste. Even during good times food should never go to waste. Excellent video!
A patient gave my husbands facility two HUGE boxes of white potatoes. Just beautiful! I made some hash browns for a work associate and I dried some. They dehydrated beautifully. Then, the patient brought in MORE!!! I am going to be busy tomorrow.
Hello Mr. Tom! I liked watching you dehydrate potatoes, mostly because you have such a calm nature about you that makes your videos so enjoyable. Thank you for all you're doing to help others learn more about self-sufficiency.
Kudos for the Video clip! Sorry for butting in, I am interested in your opinion. Have you thought about - Diyhloern Phrenic Dominion (Have a quick look on google can't remember the place now)? It is a smashing one of a kind product for preparing you and your family for any crisis minus the headache. Ive heard some great things about it and my good mate called Gray got excellent results with it.
Hey, Mr. Tom! This popped up on my feed today. Like you, I've been dehydrating vegetables for years. There's not a thing wrong with the way you do it. Your storing methods are good, too. I like to put mine in jars and vaccu-seal them. I also can some of my potatoes, too, and especially like the dry canning method.
Was thinkin' the same thing!!! Show us your best re-hydrated potato recipe... ^_^ I was wonderin' if they could be made into flakes for instant mashed potatoes... I never use those box mash products, but this might be interesting to try...
Hey Mr. Tom. Fine job. Just found your channel. If you make sourdough bread, that cooking water may come in handy for you. Potato cooking water is ideal for making the starter because it has alot of sugars that wild yeast like.
believe i had rather use your potatoes i am 73 and my parents reared me on a farm in the south and part of my life on my grandfather ranch in the southwest they both taught me a lot on work ethics and how to survive by growing my own food canning meats, curing meats trading for goods you need and if a machine broke fix it making your own parts or milling them out on the lathe by the time i turned 18 i joined the military and never regretted it that helped in structure of life even my parents and grandparents had already taught me most of the military things i needed to know for life and i hope i have done the same for my sons and grandchildren .By the way the young people of today want to sit on their (ASS) and play video games no work ethics but i still would rather have your potato for supper or breakfast than the commercial stuff, thank you sir for a good video spot on.
This is the best presentation of how to dehydrate potatoes I have watched. It helped me figure out why some of my potatoes turned black the first time I dehydrated 😂 them. I will be sure to watch more of your videos. Thanks
"...And since you're here, I'm gonna put ya'll to work!" Oh lordy, the moment you said that, I felt right at home--and I live up here in the Pacific Northwest, ahahahah! Thank you for treating me like family, sir!
Brought me back to being a young man, Bless my soul I do miss my Pop. He would say boy oh boy am I glad to see you I got a job that needs doing. He had a stack of bricks he'd always move twice once over there then sweep then we would move them back. Pop was always glad to see me coming.
Hey there Mr. Tom, just found this good informative DIY dehydrated potato video. You are definitely a teacher!!! Your calm gentle spirit encourages a lot of people to want to give this a try. Im 62 and have been canning and dehydrating most of my life, but your videos are fun to watch and enjoyable. Thank you for your time and sharing your knowledge!! 🤗😍💖
I love you mr.Tom, you have the sweetest calm voice and wonderful personality .everytime I here you talk it draws my attention. it's funny when you talk about trixie, it puts a smile on my face, I have two cats. God bless you abundantly mr.Tom and keep up the good work with these videos, we love it!
The reason you got a few dark areas on the potatoes slices was most likely due to not stirring them a few times while blanching to assure they are all separated well. A few slices remained sandwiched between other slices and didn't get hot enough to be blanched well.
Sure glad I saw this before I dehydrated all my home grown potatoes without blanching like I saw on other yt videos! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience in such a clear way!
Hi there, Mr. TOM!!! I wouls help too but I have been working on salsa all day! Its about ready to go into jars for the water bath. Yeah!!! I would live to do all these potatoes I have. I just purchased a dehydrator. Now I can begin. Thanks!!!
Tom do you see how many of us ladies would come and help you peel potatoes!!! This is so awesome. I can't wait to go get potatoes today and get started. I'm going to go to Weavers to get #25 of flour before I head to potato farm. God Bless Tom and everyone watching and stocking up food for the unsure future to come....
Great video! I have never dehydrated potatoes before, and I’ve scoured You Tube for the perfect recipe. Alas, I found you! I live in the Deep South as well, and your correct. Potatoes will rot quickly here. Thank you. New sub!
I'm st disappointed Mr Tom!! Oh oh not in you or your videos! In you tube!! I've been wondering why I have not been seeing your videos!your show finely showed up again in quite some time!! And I was not subscribed to your videos any more! I know for a fact Mr Tom I did not Unsubscribe from your videos!! Thank you for popping on by to my place once again I missed you and the welcoming way you invite me on in and I never mine helping you with the chores... I always feel happy for the good visit with you and tricky and your other beautiful cats!! ( I of courses have that inability to remember names on anyone even on your beautiful cats.) They always so warm and inviting as you are! My hubby enjoys watching with me!! My inability to remember names does not just stop at kittens names and people names but goes right on to names of movies/ showes!! But it's OK you are right back with us so we can be welcomed in to help you or you to help us!! And always share great conversation and warm fellowship! Thank you Mr Tom for always being there when my john and I need inviting fellowship! Oh and thank you Mr Tom for finding us... we were lost for a while! BUT WE ARE BACK!! Hay how do I let you tube know this happened to us!! We never unsubscribed from you!! How did it dropped us!!
WOW what a difference the blanching makes!!! Most of these food preparation processes are hard, just time consuming. But if anyone can do these things it can save money in the long run. Thanks for the tips Tom. I will definitely blanche my potatoes!!! YOUR dried potatoes are beautiful. Yours are actually prettier!
Thank you for this! I didn’t blanch my potatoes long enough the first batch I made and a few potatoes blackened. I wondered why , and now I know! I hate to waste food, so I am glad this video showed up on my feed!
Howdy Mr Tom, you’re looking good. Thank you for sharing your technique on dehydration of potatoes, blanching is a very good way to keep them pretty!🙏🌺
I’m glad Alaska Prepper told me about your channel. Enjoyed your very informative and educational video. Many blessings from the Big Island of Hawaii 🌴🤙🏽🌋
This is the best way I have found also. I do hash browns as well but only blanch for 3 minutes. Next on my list is to find a cheese powder to add to Mylar bags so all that is required is hot water. Dehydrate on Tom.
The cheese powder they sell online or if you don't need a big quantity, you can by the containers of cheese powder they use to flavor popcorn works too and the regular container usually makes equal to 2 boxes of Kraft Mac & Cheese I've found.
Rhonda. I do not use lemon water. Tom's way is step by step the same as mine. If I'm worried about anything sticking to my trays then I use wax paper. I put wax paper on the trays and use the edge of the trays to run my knife along. But I haven't had a problem with hash browns.
Thank you for showing what happens if we do not blanch the potatoes. I am finding that the preparation for food preservation takes such a long time, so I would probably have tried to take a shortcut by not blanching. You just saved me from wasting my time and money, because the raw, dehydrated potatoes looked pretty sad and unappetizing.
Potatoes are too slippery. I ALWAYS cut myself when peeling, so we purchased Idahoan dried mashed and Augason Farm shredded potatoes for me and the dog. All good. Plenty of commercially canned too. But, I am watching to learn the skill. Thank you!
Thanks Mr. Tom for sharing!!! Great to see you again and I am glad you are well. I always enjoy your videos. If you ever make it up this way to Collinsville, AL. Give me a shout and I’ll treat you to lunch. It would be great to meet you. You stay safe and I’ll catch you on the next one…Rick
Yukon Gold's are wonderful for dehydrating! Best there is! Wish I was there to help you peel all those potatoes. I processed 10 lbs of potatoes recently, MN at have to do another 10 lbs.
Very thorough video. I appreciated the discussion of why and alterates, especially the blanching before dehydrating. For storage, I use wide-mouth canning jars and vacuum-seal them. It is also a way to re-use canning lids. I can open them, use part and reseal them and they will stay fresh. I don't care for zucchini so tried this - it was delicious as chips and, of course, a total healthy snack! My grandchildren love them.
I've seen many a "how to" videos .but not one as good as yours. The way things were done by my grandma, without all fancy new stuff. Gonna do these in next few days!!!!! Thank you
Good video. When I dehydrate russets I scrub them clean, cut off the bad places and blanch/cook them whole until fork tender about 1/4th through. Then I cool them completely and slice on a mandolin with the skins on. Cooking russets that have been dehydrated with the skins on makes them taste like baked potatoes. Yum!
Debbie since you mentioned russets, have you ever dried red potatoes? I'd love to preserve reds to use later in tater soup etc where I don't mind if they fall apart.

Now that's a great idea about the freezer jug
Love the frozen jug idea!! Very thorough video.

I just go my dehydrator yesterday and I'm watching you so that I can do it too
Let us know how you did.
I would love to see a video on how you use them!
Me too please!!! 💕
If you use those box potatoes for the either the creamy ones or the cheddar ones you use dehydrated potatoes
use in soups, stews, whatever.

Thanks for watching!
Thank you
Never thought of doing this but now I will.
Clever idea to freeze the water in the jug!
Oh yes, works like a charm and is reusable too.
Awesome job mr Tom I enjoy watching you and the kitty crew lol thank you for sharing your life with us
Would love a video on how you use the potatoes. Great job.

Have never used a potato peeler for peeling potatoes. I’ve always used a small paring knife
I’ve found True there is more control to Pull opposed to push. Consider switching position of mandolin(?)
Good job Mr Tom
Next on the prepping list is a dehydrator thank you Mr Tom for showing us this that's the first thing I'm going to make when I get one
Thanks had no idea how to do it
I will be doing this if I get a good harvest of my little garden. Love the video and instruction. Thank you my great friend.

you did them perfectly
Just a little tip:
Add a little citric acid to the cooling water to avoid dark spots on the potatoes
