    For people who live in apartments who cannot grow their own food, potatoes are, so far, still affordable and nutritious. When dehydrated, large bags of potatoes do not have to go to waste. Even during good times food should never go to waste. Excellent video!

    A patient gave my husbands facility two HUGE boxes of white potatoes. Just beautiful! I made some hash browns for a work associate and I dried some. They dehydrated beautifully. Then, the patient brought in MORE!!! I am going to be busy tomorrow.

    Hey, Mr. Tom! This popped up on my feed today. Like you, I've been dehydrating vegetables for years. There's not a thing wrong with the way you do it. Your storing methods are good, too. believe i had rather use your potatoes i am 73 and my parents reared me on a farm in the south and part of my life on my grandfather ranch in the southwest they both taught me a lot on work ethics and how to survive by growing my own food canning meats,curing meats trading for goods you need and if a machine broke fix it making your own parts or milling them out on the lathe by the time i turned 18 i joined the military and never regretted it that helped in structure of life even my parents and grandparents had already taught me most of the military things i needed to know for life and i hope i have done the same for my sons and grandchildren .By the way the young people of today want to sit on their (ASS) and play video games no work ethics but i still would rather have your potato for supper or breakfast than the commercial stuff, thank you sir for a good video spot on.

    The reason you got a few dark areas on the potatoes slices was most likely due to not stirring them a few times while blanching to assure they are all separated well. A few slices remained sandwiched between other slices and didn't get hot enough to be blanched well.

    • @WillowsGarden
      @WillowsGarden 5 років тому +1

      The cheese powder they sell online or if you don't need a big quantity, you can by the containers of cheese powder they use to flavor popcorn works too and the regular container usually makes equal to 2 boxes of Kraft Mac & Cheese I've found.

    • @jeffriffel4364
      @jeffriffel4364 5 років тому +1

      Rhonda. I do not use lemon water. Tom's way is step by step the same as mine. If I'm worried about anything sticking to my trays then I use wax paper. I put wax paper on the trays and use the edge of the trays to run my knife along. But I haven't had a problem with hash browns.

I am finding that the preparation for food preservation takes such a long time, so I would probably have tried to take a shortcut by not blanching. Very thorough video. I appreciated the discussion of why and alterates, especially the blanching before dehydrating.
    For storage, I use wide-mouth canning jars and vacuum-seal them. It is also a way to re-use canning lids. I can open them, use part and reseal them and they will stay fresh.
    I don't care for zucchini so tried this - it was delicious as chips and, of course, a total healthy snack! My grandchildren love them.

      Yes you do need another one and remember you don't need an expensive dehydrator either. Merry Christmas to You as well.

      That’s the mistake I made, it was not cheap. Won’t do that again.

    Good video. When I dehydrate russets I scrub them clean, cut off the bad places and blanch/cook them whole until fork tender about 1/4th through. Then I cool them completely and slice on a mandolin with the skins on. Cooking russets that have been dehydrated with the skins on makes them taste like baked potatoes. Yum!

      Debbie since you mentioned russets, have you ever dried red potatoes? I'd love to preserve reds to use later in tater soup etc where I don't mind if they fall apart.
