      I think it could be for him to focus, since his memory palace could be multiple places, and not forgetting that he is Sherlock, so his palace is probably extremely advanced. The complexity of his memory palace in nature, may require undisturbed space for him to search through his mind, to collate every place (could be 30 places even), and walk mentally.
      And while you’re doing that, imagine two people staring at you, thinking you have gone mad.

      Considering he's also filmed keeping a severed head in the fridge next to the chicken korma, kissing Moriarty, drinking a coffee garnished with eyeballs, riding the Tube covered in pig blood and having hallucinations about a giant mutated dog, on a Sherlock weirdness scale of 1 to 10, mind palace gestures rate about minus 5.

    • @pooballify
      @pooballify 7 років тому +102

      Yeah but those were all just props. For this Cumberbatch just had to sit there and pretend to wave his arms around at nothing. I'd say this'd probably be more embarrassing for the actor

    • @chooseyourpoison5105
      @chooseyourpoison5105 7 років тому +77

      I think he is probably used to acting in front of nothing from all his green screen work on Doctor Strange and The Hobbit and considers it just another day at the office. I actually think this scene is fascinating to watch; it looks weird for a few seconds but then you get drawn into the intricacy of the gestures and Benedict's spot-on nailing of the character. (Same with his motion-capture performance as Smaug; for the first ten seconds it's "tee hee, Benedict is crawling around on the floor in lycra" but then you find yourself gaping at the sheer brilliance of the performance.)

      First time I saw it was just an out of context clip. I assumed it was literally a joke at the expense of the show which I this case would have been BC making weird motions that were memed over.
      The way the word 'liberty' written in lower case helvetica just kind of lazily rotates and moves across the screen like a freshman powerpoint presentation is - begging - you to laugh at it.
      Plus the sound mixing is just absolute trash, just garbage. Effects are too abrupt and too loud. That's all without mentioning the 'mind palace' technique used here by Sherlock fails to resemble the actual technique in RL, and seems to contradict the in-show explanation given by Watson moments before.
      To compound this nightmare even further the small glimpse at the begining of the scene where we are give an internal view of Sherlock's thoughts (seeing the word 'hound' through a pinhole with some light effect) did an infinatly better job of communicating the information - and - of being visually interesting.
      It's an absolute travesty top to bottom. And at any scale.
