      @@allanward4594 Thing is, I was never really a fan of the Beatles. Now that I am an adult, I tend to gravitate toward Paul's work specifically. I guess I do sort of put the Beach Boys on a pedestal though. It just seemed cool that, as I am discovering Paul as an individual artist, that he would also be a fan of the Beach Boys. :)

      ***** Ah, so your opinion is fact & my opinion is just my opinion. Gotcha! I don't make my original statement lightly. I'm a huge Beatle fan but I still say what Brian Wilson accomplished on SMiLE is above & beyond what the Beatles accomplished artistically. Have you ever heard it? In my wrong opinion, it's the evolutional pinnacle of the musical form that started out as 12-bar blues, morphed into rhythm & blues, and then was called rock & roll when white people became interested in it. It's 'Aaron Copland goes surfing.'

    • @nickprezzo
      @nickprezzo 10 років тому +2

      Lynn Turman
      Absolutely. The Beatles popularised modern music along with Elvis, revolutionised the industry and the way it works (with merchandising, huge stadium concerts, recording studios etc), had a direct/indirect influence on every popular music artist known today, created the most covered song of all time, made 4 albums that made their way into the top 10 of all time, changed rock/psychadelic rock/metal/pop forever, made the first parody (Back in the U.S.S.R), made the godfather tracks of early metal/psychadelic rock, made the first full album that didn't have disjointed songs such as covers or filler (rubber soul), made the first track ever recorded with a 'backwards' guitar sound (I'm Only Sleeping), held the top 5 spots in the charts at 1 point in 1964 (never done before or since), sold the most records ever and made THE most iconic and imitated album cover ever.. I don't think you can compare their acheivements artistically to be honest.

    • @lynnturman8157
      @lynnturman8157 10 років тому +16

      ***** Well, to begin with, you're NOT comparing the Beatles to Brian Wilson artistically. You're comparing them commercially. And believe me, you don't have to convince me of the importance of the Beatles. They're by far my favorite band. And basically, I had the same reaction you're having the first time somebody made the statement that SMiLE was more artistic than Sgt. Pepper or Abbey Road or Rubber Soul or Revolver. Complete bullshit, I thought. Then I heard SMiLE and had to agree. But it's comparing a porche to a ferari.

      There was a lot of mutual respect between the two as well. The great bands of the '60s had a competitive streak as well, but ultimately, greatness recognizes greatness. The competitiveness was very healthy, and is one of the reasons why that era (IMO) stands up as the most significant in the history of popular music. Every time someone like the Beach Boys or the Beatles put out another masterpiece, everyone else took notice, and had to raise their own game as well to try to keep pace. What a brilliant time for music, especially starting right around 1965/66.

    Everytime i listen to Paul McCartney in interviews and stuff, it just makes me like him all the more, for such a legend to be absolutely in awe of Brian Wilson, with such a massive amount of talent to his own name, my word. I loved the Beach boys music ever since i was a kid, and hats off to ya sir for feeling the same way =)
    My word, i would have loved to have spoken with all the Wilson boys so much, it's agonizing to think what Brian endured from his father, Mike and the loss of his baby brothers. I would have loved for him to have kept on writing, because while this is surely his seminal piece, i feel like if he were to write one more song in the same style art, he'd outperform it. On the off chance that Paul or Brian should ever read coments such as the ones we're posting, i hope they truely understand what a gift they've both given the world, and that it will never tarnish nor perish.

    Its hard to imagine Paul being apprehensive about singing with anyone, but for him to say that was quite a bow to Brian Wilson. Pauls range in days of old was up there with the best of them, for harmony and lead, as well as unique in style. For any groups who have attempted Beatles harmonies along with odd chords structures you understand it was not a walk in the park either. The Beach boys , like the Four Seasons and CSNY had a niche with High Harmonies and were defined by it. One could add the Eagles to this list as well as The Association. The Genius is working with what you have to the best it could be, and all these Bands were exemplary at it ! What stands out for me in this interview and often others with middle aged talent is the willingness to embrace the art more than the ego, very refreshing ! Rod Stuart had a great line in a song called "Oh la la": "I wish, that, I knew what I know now, when i was younger" . Age tends to lower the walls quite a bit !

      Yeah, I like Paul's harmonies as well. When I sing the lead part when John (Lennon) is lead, I hear Paul's part and want to switch as well. It was torturous. Some people might, if listening, would think I'm schizophrenic. My favorite Beatles song is "Helter Skelter." Paul's vocals are very hard to match. I am a baritone trying to do tenor II while singing full voice and kind of screaming/singing style. I can easily do a Bono (from U2) version of "Helter Skelter" but not Paul's rendition. However, I have seen Paul Mccartney's live and it is around the same (first time) time he did "Helter Skelter" live. He can pull it off. "Hey Jude" not so much. Something is off on outro with his screaming. Very weird. He may have lost his power range similar to what Chris Cornell had that made him a great vocalist.

      The info above says it's 'God Only Knows', which is a very moving song for starters, though for McCartney is likely has a much greater meaning given the influence of the Beach Boys (i.e., Brian Wilson) on his own songwriting. It was also McCartney, of course, who inducted Wilson into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, so there is a very deep connection.

    My God. I Would Sure Love To Sing With Paul. I Know I’d Probably Lose it Emotionally. It Would Be My Dream Come True. When he played Mother’s Day at Oakland Coliseum, I was waiting outside in the parking lot for four hours with my guitar, hoping he would sign it if I saw him. I saw the bus come out and it stopped, and Paul was standing in the bus, and he looked down right at me. I was like 10 feet away from him. I looked at him and gave him that look of please. !! Then the bus driver punched it. I know he probably couldn’t do it for safety reasons. I actually went to the guitar Center and bought an Epiphone Texan just for that. It was so sad to see that bus drive away. But I saw him. God, I love your Music. It brings me peace in my soul. And B7th is my favorite chord too !!!

    See--the Stones, the Beatles, the Who, Cream, Jeff Beck, David Gilmour all love the Beach Boys. You know who else did? John Paul Jones. He has said before he joined Led Zeppelin, the only rock and roll album he owned was "Pet Sounds"!

      @blueticecho: the punchline is usually a shovel not an axe but it's an interesting alternative - more dangerous!

    Ronnie's image, like the one Keef has to drag around behind all the time, is that of a Bad Boy - but Ron's just another sensitive soul.

      Lie. People keep on spreading lies. People adore lies. I don't. it is also disrespect as Paul has denied it several times. And if we see the clip in the Let it Be sessions we noticed it never happened. Amazingly, some people can "see" it. How come? Because they love lies.
