Lynn Turman Absolutely. The Beatles popularised modern music along with Elvis, revolutionised the industry and the way it works (with merchandising, huge stadium concerts, recording studios etc), had a direct/indirect influence on every popular music artist known today, created the most covered song of all time, made 4 albums that made their way into the top 10 of all time, changed rock/psychadelic rock/metal/pop forever, made the first parody (Back in the U.S.S.R), made the godfather tracks of early metal/psychadelic rock, made the first full album that didn't have disjointed songs such as covers or filler (rubber soul), made the first track ever recorded with a 'backwards' guitar sound (I'm Only Sleeping), held the top 5 spots in the charts at 1 point in 1964 (never done before or since), sold the most records ever and made THE most iconic and imitated album cover ever.. Paul loves Brian so much and it’s so well deserved. Brian is a sweet and humble man who is our modern day Mozart and he doesn’t even realize it. We’re all in awe of Brian and his musical genius
Well, it was a win by default though. Brian fell apart with mental illness and drug abuse during the creation of a very ambitious follow-up to Pet Sounds, and never fully recovered. Brian also didn't have a high-level talent to collaborate with, as Paul did with John.
I love the mutual respect and admiration that Paul and Brian have always had for each other. Two of the greatest, possibly THE greatest, musicians of pop/rock music of the 20th century. Thank you Brian and Paul for the great songs you gave us all to enjoy forever.
There was a lot of mutual respect between the two as well. The great bands of the '60s had a competitive streak as well, but ultimately, greatness recognizes greatness. The competitiveness was very healthy, and is one of the reasons why that era (IMO) stands up as the most significant in the history of popular music. Everytime i listen to Paul McCartney in interviews and stuff, it just makes me like him all the more, for such a legend to be absolutely in awe of Brian Wilson, with such a massive amount of talent to his own name, my word. I loved the Beach boys music ever since i was a kid, and hats off to ya sir for feeling the same way =) My word, i would have loved to have spoken with all the Wilson boys so much, it's agonizing to think what Brian endured from his father, Mike and the loss of his baby brothers. I would have loved for him to have kept on writing, because while this is surely his seminal piece, i feel like if he were to write one more song in the same style art, he'd outperform it. On the off chance that Paul or Brian should ever read coments such as the ones we're posting, i hope they truely understand what a gift they've both given the world, and that it will never tarnish nor perish.
Its hard to imagine Paul being apprehensive about singing with anyone, but for him to say that was quite a bow to Brian Wilson. Pauls range in days of old was up there with the best of them, for harmony and lead, as well as unique in style. For any groups who have attempted Beatles harmonies along with odd chords structures you understand it was not a walk in the park either. The Beach boys , like the Four Seasons and CSNY had a niche with High Harmonies and were defined by it. One could add the Eagles to this list as well as The Association. The Genius is working with what you have to the best it could be, and all these Bands were exemplary at it ! What stands out for me in this interview and often others with middle aged talent is the willingness to embrace the art more than the ego, very refreshing ! Rod Stuart had a great line in a song called "Oh la la": "I wish, that, I knew what I know now, when i was younger" . Age tends to lower the walls quite a bit !
Yeah, I like Paul's harmonies as well. When I sing the lead part when John (Lennon) is lead, I hear Paul's part and want to switch as well. It was torturous. Some people might, if listening, would think I'm schizophrenic. My favorite Beatles song is "Helter Skelter." Paul's vocals are very hard to match. I am a baritone trying to do tenor II while singing full voice and kind of screaming/singing style. I can easily do a Bono (from U2) version of "Helter Skelter" but not Paul's rendition. However, I have seen Paul Mccartney's live and it is around the same (first time) time he did "Helter Skelter" live. He can pull it off. "Hey Jude" not so much. Something is off on outro with his screaming. Very weird. He may have lost his power range similar to what Chris Cornell had that made him a great vocalist.
He had an internet radio show a while back...Ronnie's gotta be easiest guy to get along with. A genuine, sweet soul! I'm sure there are archieves of those shows.
