I bought this set after looking at many others. I got rid of the white and added the professional grade indigo. I also added a raw sienna and a Hooker’s green in pro grade. I stored the sponge in the water cup. I plan on upgrading all the other colors as they get used up. I really like the way W-N designed their set. I work on small paper (4X6) because my subjects are small (frogs, turtles, fish, squirrels, etc…). It’s a great field set for me.
Van Gogh is student quality, Talens has artist quality Rembrandt. Winsor and Newton also has two qualities, am not sure which is in that lovely kit of yours. I also prefer WN artist above van Gogh.
Rembrandt portrait set is in my wishlist. 🤗 I have the student grade - WN Cotman in this set, but actually I was more after the kit (the Professional version has the same kit, only the half pans are different inside). I plan to use the kit with any of my watercolor sets as the pans are easily changeable. I’ll give WN artist grade a try when I get the chance. Heard a lot of good things about it, also way more affordable than Daniel Smith/Schmincke.
@@thehobbyist_findsLike you, I'd buy it for the box then put my own paint (from tubes) in it. Standard half pans don't fit. I do like the little brushes tho' , quite handy for 3x5 and 4x6 sketchbooks.
I have the same W and N field box, but with the professional quality 1/2 pans. They are excellent - much more pigment than the Cotman and better light fastness. They are therefore more expensive, but you could gradually replace the Cotman with Professional, as you use them up!
Was disappointed with this product the half pans are loose in the pallet and the paints do not dry out and stick to the lid when you open the lid ,very hard to handle I bought this to take overseas having second thoughts now
sorry you got a bad experience with this product. I heard that there are dupe versions of this made in China, also Cotman watercolors in tubes that the quality are way different than original ones. If the case is working and your problem are the half pans and the paints in it, all isn’t wasted, you can either change the half pans to any other watercolor brand you like. I find to make it tighter, you can also add one more pan to both top and bottom rows. hope this helps.

Nice, thorough review.
Thank you. I enjoyed the whole learning process.

That’s my plan! 😉 I really love how W&N design their watercolor kits. 🥰
@@thehobbyist_finds It's a grand kit isn't it - I inherited mine from my father over 20 years ago, so I really treasure it.
Keep in mind that there are successful professional watercolor artists whom use Cotman watercolors exclusively.
Very true!
