Dire Straits for the win👌🏻
Tunnel of love. Great song from one of the greatest bands. I love it.
That entire band is superhuman
@@shawnannul Knopfler didn't tolerate anything else back in the day heh
Wow ..i recognized it lol
Call me basic but Sultans of Swing is definitely a top 100 all time song all genres included. Probably top 20.
Sometimes people forget a groove is better than complexity :p
Play Birdman movie Drums
It is very complex tho, some might call that progressive drumming, as multiple changes like that are used in lots of progressive rock drummer like mike portnoy from dream theatre to name one. Although he alrdy replaced by mike mangini, which are also an insane drummer
Same thing with guitar.
I'd call it groove and complexity over speed and complexity.
Tasty is the word. Tasty is tasty no matter what.
Pick Withers, bloody brilliant underrated drummer from the 80s. Much respect
Yeah! Few people know him but he was on 🔥 back in the day! He even was the man behind the drums in Money For Nothing and Private Investigations. Tasteful and fantastic sound!
@@guitarhilley unfortunately he was not on Money for nothing as he left Dire Straits after recording love over gold album... then Came Terry Williams
@@fabienlouvel5536 You’re right! My bad! Thanks for the rectification. I don’t delete my comment though, let’s see how much negative comments it will produce. 🫣
@@fabienlouvel5536 But williams only did the drum intro on Money for Nothing, the rest of Brothers in Arms was recorded by Omar Hakim...
100%. Had Pick on my podcast a little while back. What an amazing talent!
Honestly the way you bring dire straits music to showcase just makes my day. Very few people in our generation even know these guys existed. When you did the intro to money for nothing I could feel goosebumps. Keep up the great work Estepario!
Esattamente 🇮🇹🇮🇹. Pick Withers e’ stato fino a lover over gold (album) un genio unico il vero sound @dire straits gli altri batteristi dovevano essere piu’ forti di lui , ma non era possibile trovare l’evoluzione di Pick
You maxxed out my respect for you with this. Actual legend.
Came here to say exactly this.
Leveled up!
While smoking too
"Tunnel of Love" - Mark Knopfler & Dire Straits, who knew?! That's great! Really shows your diversity in music. Love it!
Pick Withers. The real drummer. Nothing like you in Dire Straits band
That solo has soul, it doesn't have to be crazy, just has to be felt.
the famous and ultra talented Mr Pick Withers. so loved his drumming. finesse, style, rhythmic but subtle and subdued a lot. underplayed it with feel, never overdid it.
Most of the greatest metal drummers all have a groovy, or funky beat that's their favorite.
Some of the best drummers are groovy/funky drummers. People who feel the beat instead of making their drums feel the beating.
@@davidmedeiros8998 well said.
Dave grohl is an example of this
You're right. I ended up playing for a few metal bands because they heard me jamming down the hall at the music studio.
They said they liked it better because it was different. I never played the beat they expected to hear. I added double bass a couple of decades ago and started learning rudiments with my feet
John dolmayan of course
such a deep level of respect for not only being the freshest drummer but also such a tasteful musician and listener
For some reason I felt in my gut before he started playing that he’d go for Dire Straits. Granted I was expecting Sultans, but something told me he’d go down that route. I salute you sir for being the epic performer you are 🫡
You can't go wrong with Dire Straits. Ever.
I absolutely DID NOT expect Tunnel of Love. That whole album was the very first rock album I heard when I was a child, I played it over and over again. That song in specific is one of my favorites to this day.
Same here 👍🏻
Same. Great MK and DS fan here and this just blew my freaking mind. I'd love to hear him explain why
I thought you might pick out something by Stewart Copeland, so I think I wasn't too far off, in terms of era.
When people like Dire Straits, that's how I know that they have great musical tastes.
❤
That’s very true
Everyone wants to know you like them, thanks for letting them know .
Sorry, but that band stinks. They have one good song and you know the one I’m talking about. 😂
How can you not like Dire Straits though let's be honest
This dude has effortless power.
Rush's spirit of the radio is one of the best
"Tunnel of Love" by Dire Straits ... YES! Especially from their live double album set "Alchemy". Awesome!
Originally from “Making Movies”. Amazing album’! “Alchemy” is epic!!
wrong drummer on Alchemy. that was Terry Williams. NOT a pinch on Pick Withers !@
I was talking about the solo, not the drummer.
A true drummer . You're truly inspirational man
Pic Withers played drums on the LP love the fills an you cover is FAB my Brother...
Most think your a technical machine, I'm glad ya did this, it shows your actually have a musical ear, along w amazing chops..
🎩🎶🥁
Pick Withers was a hell of a player. For anyone that is wondering... The track is Tunnel of Love by Dire Straits from the album Making Movies (1980).
Ok...now you need to do a full cover of that song. It was awesome!
I totally agree
Versatility is the Key of Every Successful Drummer ❤️ and Sir you are the fitting Example ❤️
You're not just technical, you're also MUSICAL!
Lyrical. AF
Yes!
Tunnel of Love by Dire Straights great song 🔥🔥💯💯
This whole song is just wildly good and under appreciated. Awesome choice, one of my all time favorites!
Fuck yeah!! Such a groove.
I absolutely agree. This solo is so satisfying. It has everything in it. I can only describe it as...delicious.
Neither of them was a solo.
@@VideoDotGoogleDotCom iT's NoT a GuItAr SoLo If It HaS ChOrDs UnDeR iT
Man, you got me there, fuck, one of my favorite solos ever. Tasty, rhythmic, excellent used of the high hat and toms, you fucking nailed it.
Not only a great drum solo but one of the best guitar solos ever all around one of the best 80 s band
Dude, I love this fucking song. So much, this breakdown especially gives me all the juice in the world. I jokingly tell my friends this breakdown just gives me all the animus. I am so, so happy to see other people who get the same juice from it. Thanks dude.
One of my favorite Dire Straits songs. That ending guitar solo is 🔥
Absolutely love it
Where the fuck is the super like button?
Maybe his best, maybe
The whole outro to that song is just glorious
@@alexhartman7230 Oh for sure!
Dire Straits is a criminally underrated band.
Imma have to look into them. I NEED better music in my life. (already got a tab open and listening to Sultans of swing, the first video that came up when I searched their name.)
@@thejurassicgameroom9344 the riff and solo are two of the most beautifully written things for guitar, ever. Also, the guitar player (Mark Knopfler) is also the singer

@@thejurassicgameroom9344this song is called tunnel of love and it's one of there bests
Another NPC with the oh so original "criminally underrated" goofball statement. Underrated to whom? Tiktokers? They are a legendary band.
Neil Peart. Every song he has created is basically a solo
Imcrediable musician!!!! Always astonished
Growing up with dire straits, was proud when you played their song. i know you know your roots. 🥹
Dude that sounds so awesome to me,
just like it always did……
Like Pick Withers drumming to me ….
an 80’s kid.
Terry Williams, when with Dire Straits was an amazing drummer and I agree, one of the best drum solos ever.
Terry didn't join until the Live Over Gold tour, this was originally played by Pick Withers, Dire Straits' first drummer.
A good solo doesn't need to be technically impressive. A good solo fits the song and simply sounds good.
Sometimes less is more. These parts not only have more heart when spaced out, but cave more purpose. ❤
Love this! Just discovered your channel. I'm 40 and have loved dire straits since the womb. I have a concert stub and a photo of my mum with mark knopfler after the concert. Excellent band.
It's never about how fast it is, but it's always about how good it makes you feel.
It’s the integration of the Drums with the rest of the music it fits its dynamic with without being distracting or dominating nothing like the sweet spot of a tight groove .
You, my friend, have taste to match your talent. Bravo!
This! And the appreciation of Real music! ❤
Totally get this. I've been sharing this man's videos to my father for awhile now. he is my guitar player. One year we were on the road so much we went through 12 drummers that year. 160+ shows a year.
We have a soft spot for this man, love his style, his talent, and his vibe
Six Whiskey Revival checking in from the East Coast US. Blessings 🙌
Steve Gadd on Aja is absolutely amazing! I’d love to hear your interpretation of the two solos in that song!
I love the Alchemy video of how Mr Withers is completely into what he's doing.
Never doubted you for a second. That's why you are my favourite drummer of all time brother!
You are the best... The level of respect you have just gained....
What i like most about music is that, to a solo or song be considered someone's favorite, it don't need to have complex patterns or double bass at 550bpm. It just needs to be enjoyable!
As much love that Mark gets(and rightfully so)for his guitar skills, Pick brings that same level of talent to every song he was a part of. That band was so F ing tight in studio and live.
This man really just popped up in my feed one day and made me buy a whole ass drum set😂
I’ve seriously contemplated that too - even though I’m a bass player 😂
I'm 62 and considering it!
Just one?
Agreed. Perfect super clean. Exactly what the music required. Perfect compliment and accompaniment.
A great musician plays to compliment the music, not the ego
and the piano fills at the end of the Alchemy version. In my opinion, the finest live album ever put to final
Check out the drumming on the Cars first albums - whether you like the tunes or not. Tell us what you think!
Literally my favorite post yet... the feeling and pocket presence is so good!!
Not surprised at all really its very precise timing and direct or meaningful beats, alot faster than one may think. Mess up even the tiniest bit and it's super noticeable so more technical than one may think as well. Your an awesome artist man hands down among the greatest in your field to ever play the instrument.
And this is precisely why I like the drummer ( Akane Hirose ) from BAND-MAID so much. Nearly every track they play she plays it with fill and variety not just a fast pace manotanus beat.
Sometimes, it's more about hangin in the pocket than being as fast as humanly possible. That's what makes you a solid musician. Cheers, my dude.
When the Short began, I was really hoping it to be something from The Police/Sting or Phil Collins/Genesis or Dire Straits. I was not disappointed. ;-)
Honestly thought he was gonna go Phil Collins.
I would honestly like to hear him play some Phil Collins/Genesis now.
Part of me was expecting Jack and Diane 😂😂😂
@@B00s3 Cinema Show would be incredible
@@ChasedRabbit Kenny Aronoff is Bad A**!!
There’s flow, it’s groovy, sounds crisp, there’s soul… and that’s a drum solo
Terry Williams, Welsh drumming legend!
This was recorded when Pick Withers was the drummer, actually
@mikaylachapman9036 Terry Williams did the drum intro for money for nothing and is credited for it on the album. Google it
@@mikaylachapman9036 and Pick Withers didn't even play on this album it was Omar Hakin 🤦♂️
@@GatoWales "Tunnel of Love" was from the Making Movies album, which came out in 1980 when Pick Withers was Dire Straits' full-time drummer. Omar Hakim played on Brothers in Arms, which came out in 1985.
@mikaylachapman9036 yep my apologies! I read it wrong I thought it was Money for nothing!
Duuude that was really cool! I enjoy this one. It seems like you're genuinely having fun. It's good to see!
Love this fuckin guy. I wanna be like him when i grow up
You have something most Drummers today haven't -Groove!!! Thats awesome 👍
It's not about how technically brilliant you are, and he is, but about the beauty of the solo within the song as a whole.
The smoke coming from the drums off the top of the screen shows the passion he’s putting into the song. Clearly his favorite groove to play!❤❤
It’s all about playing the right part for the song! Sometimes less busy is the way to go and old music nailed the feels
Love it!! Every video you upload is a banger!
As a drummer myself I will say I agree purely because of the same reason why my drum idol has always been travis barker it may not be death metal speed but its purely technical
Which is why jazz is one of the hardest to learn accurately
Bravado by rush, the complexity that Neil peart builds to by the end of the song is just amazing
Next Tom Sawyer with one hand
I did suggest this hope he does it
Yes
your the best I’ve seen bro absolute unbelievable talent, all the money in the world could not buy your gift
He doesn't believe in talent himself but hard work over years!
Wonderful solo. It isn’t just “look at how fast I can hit stuff”, it actually builds a solid groove and develops the idea. The other stuff is impressive, but it gets boring after a little while.
1 Cream - Toad live 68 (i think)
2 Santanta - Soul Sacrifice live 69 (woodstock baby)
3 Deep Purple - The Mule live 72
That was amazingly smooth and beautiful to listen to and watch. Definitely the greatest
I love you giving the love to dire straits man. They're so good and obviously you're the pinnacle of talent I've seen
Bro smoke a joint between doing the solo, is insane this man
he's right thought. a solo's that give time to breath, use technique and emphasize on certain hits definitely makes me feel it more then just "FAST"
And that is exactly why you should start grooving more on your channel! 🙏🏻
Ikr
Yes! Next, dynamics 😉
The fact he's picked Dire straights just show how much he appreciates all walks of music. The tunnel of love is an absolute gem of a song
A man of culture. People sleep on the drumming in Dire Straits music but go watch Alchemy and pick up your jaw off the floor at the musicianship of every single one of those guys.
You need to do a Sultans of Swing cover. But the live 10 min version. Great drumming!
Yea yea yea dire straits sultans of swing live alchemy version
Yes! Seconded! Thirded! Whatever. The agreement is total!
Yeah, that is the most epic live performance of all time
TOTALLY AGREE!!!!🤘🏻
Great song but so overplayed. Dire Straits have dozens of amazing songs, I hate that Sultans is the only one that gets so much attention.
This may be the coolest thing I have yet to see on UA-cam! Hats off to you, big fella!
My dad used to wake me up every Sunday to money for nothing as a kid... dire straits will always have a place in my heart
Carl Palmer the goat of rock drummers in Karn Evil 9 was the most incredible rock drum solo ever. Hope to see it reproduced on this channel.
I’m glad this man was created for the world to hear and see! I hope he’s a humble compassionate human being
Maybe I just haven't watched enough drummers but as far as I'm concerned you're the best drummer I've ever seen
You're a long way from totally wrong.
One of the things I've noticed with myself and other musicians is it's the simple stuff that works that really gets me going... I'm a bassist. My favorite base line? One of these days by pink Floyd. Three notes. That's it. But the anger and rage it wells up for me as a bass player is surpassed by nothing else. Simplicity. The shortest or easiest is sometimes not he best.
I think the late Neil Pert from Rush needs to have a say here...he definitely has some of the greatest drum solos ever recorded
La práctica hace al maestro pero este tipo es genial excelente y perfecto 🤩🎉🙏🇲🇽
Damn bro, that was wild, My dad raised me on that music what a throwback thank you
Bass player here. I’m always amazed by how drummers set up their kits. A drummers set up is like his finger print, no two are the same.
I can totally see that. The first is just speed play, and the 2nd one has many more opportunities for flair. Percussionists love their flair. 🥰
What about the drum solo at the beginning of Money for nothing? I love it!
That's the way you do it, bang them drums for all the peeps to see🎶
O
that solo + that video knocked me out the first time i saw it, incredible!
Much respect!! You have respect for all genres, and you have mine!
That groove was smooth as butter.
I had a Yamaha EAD10 Drum Module, and I thought I used it well, but this guy went off on making it sound awesome.
I have heard many drummers. I’m an old school musician, studied theory and composition at university, and this guy is holy crap in a level in his own. No mames! Chingonometrico!!!!!
