How did the Prado 150 go with an Engine Tune | More Power/Less Lag?

- I head down and meet Craig from Highfields Mechanical for an Engine Tune on my Prado 150. Up until now I was using the IDRIVE, which did the job. I was a little skeptical at first I must admit in tuning up my 3.0L 4 CYL Turbo Diesel Prado which has done a little over 200,000kms. However it had been suggested by my trusted mechanic, Dan the man from Dan's Automotive. I had heard all sorts of horror stories from these engines being tuned, including cracking pistons. However, a little big of extra Torque, less lag and quick off the mark did sound appealing, especially if I was to tow some sort of camper / hybrid caravan in the future.
When explaining all this to Craig at Highfields Mechanical, he completely understood and assured me the tune would be suited to me and my vehicle and that the tuning wasn't just an off the shelf one fits all for a Prado. I was beginning to feel a whole lot better after talking to Craig.
So we went for a milder type of tune. One that fitted what I wanted to achieve, and that was less or no lag when taking off, a bit more torque and more power too, but not dangerously crazy where we would run into engine problems later. Craig agreed and accepted the challenge!
Craig organised for a Specific Program tailored to MY PRADO and my circumstances. Not a 'one fits all off the shelf'. Craig tested the engine first to make sure there were no underlying issues and that the injectors were all working fine.
Craig went to work - he worked his magic and we had a ton of fun!
To this day, I am more than happy with the work he has done and I am confident that this vehicle will do another 200,000kms without any dramas. I hardly use the IDRIVE now.
Fuel economy has improved; no lag; more torque and MORE POWER!

Hey mate maybe i missed it.. what was your standard vs tuned torque figures?
I've heard the name Mark before, my remote remap module tune files were done by him, but the module is from Torqit guys, maybe Mark works for many people/companies?
Yes could be 👍
What, I really like. Is everything your showing is local, to me as well 😁
Thanks mate! Cheers!
Didn't think to turn off the workshop radio while you guys were talking?
Yes probably should have. 😀👍
So, 2 years later how does it go? Still happy?
Yes, very happy, runs great. Up to 287000kms now. 👍
@@prado150outahere great to hear! Thinking about doing something similar to my 2013 with 175tkm.
Awesome mate, you won't regret it
Have you noticed any difference in initial economy ? I spose it’s to early to tell, but just curious, I have a 150 too and am wanting to get a tune but have my hesitations about it. Don’t want to compromise engine.
Yes I am noticing a good difference in fuel economy particularly on highway drives. I'm very happy with it. I hardly turn on my Idrive now 😁👍
Go with who you trust. I've done a bit of research and both Dan's Automotive and Highfields Mechanical have been amazing. I have other videos about Dan and I trust his advise completely. He suggested a tune would be good for this engine. I've kept up the oil changed and maintenance to a high standard and just recently cleaned the EGR. I think its a good move. Injectors will be due in about 20k kms. I'm very happy with the outcome so far.
What was the all up cost in the end ?
$1595 however if you mention my channel Craig will do it for $1395 👍
Any performance upgrade available for a 2010 2.7 petrol Prado?
Hey mate. Yeah unsure on that one sorry
What does it mean `EGR correction`? Is it same as EGR delete?
Hey mate. Yeah not a EGR delete. I believe they just tone it down a bit in the computer.
have you had the injectors replaced? Or load tested? 1kd's are prone to a piston crack. I hope the tune works for you well !
No, injectors haven't been replaced as yet. They were all tested and values were good. Its a mild tune and yes I was hesitant in the first instant. However, a bit more torque and power good for overall and especially towing. Yes I'm aware of cracked pistons but I've been assured with this tune customised to me and my vehicle it will be a great benefit.
@@prado150outahere at 150kms mine cracked. Nothing bet the best maintenance from new, my injector values were also good… Good luck.
oh no mate. Not good. What year was your Prado?
@@prado150outahere 2013… Has a new engine now. How’s yours going with the tune?
Mine seems to be going awesome with no issues, loving it mate. I'll keep an eye on it after your comments. From information I have heard, the 2015 model, 3 L they have refined the injectors to a generation 4 or 5 I believe and are much stronger then the earlier models.
haha that guy is tall and ur short ? cool goodstuff ! good on you for getting a tune !
a good general video on Dyno tune ! looks like you got a decent outcome as well !
Yep, bit of a contrast 😁😁👍
Gday mate!
I’ve got a 2019 150 gxl.
Toyo 265 17 75 RT’S, Bullbar
2” superior lift
My economy with 3 in the car and groceries a 2 hour drive I want better economy and a bit more stick.
How much was the tune?
Do you have an after exhaust?
What happens if you get errors come up
Ongoing servicing with Flash or at home?
Love to hear pros and cons to justify a tune.
Thanks for your comment. Can you send me an email to Prado150.Outahere@iinet.net.au and I'll go thru mine and my experiences in detail. Saves you going back to find a reply to your comment and it'll give me a few days to get back to you. 👍
Hey mate, how are the 265/75 17s going for you?
I was going to put 275/70 r17s (half inch smaller than yours) on my 150 but not sure..
Did you notice much change in power or steering?
At the moment no issues, and loving it. I think its the perfect size for what I do with the Prado. Could go a wider tyre size next time, but really I'm happy with these. Didn't notice much at all with power or steering. I'd recommend what I have now.
Just my 2c but it's not worth the risk, these things are renowned for piston crack, more torque = higher cylinder pressure = higher stress on pistons, if it lets go you will always wonder, I accept mine for what it is, if I wanted big power and torque would go for V8 cruiser instead where there is more cylinders to spread the load over, a long engine on these are 10k from Toyota plus all the fitting and consumables that are needed.
👍
Just get a V8 dude !! Prado is awesome car from the factory
😁😁
