This is just fuckin incredible. I've NEVER heard anyone even attempt to do this live. Not even Jimi himself....I'm speechless.

So true.. The delay pedals are far superior today.. I can imagine Jimi using one of those pedals that sound like a synth or a string section wrapping around the notes and chords to get that spacey, ambient sound... Jimi would've flipped.. 😎

To call these guys a tribute act is a bit of an insult because I have NEVER heard anybody come closer to the feel of Jimi's playing than Randy. A lot of guys can get the technique down fairly well and use a lot of the equipment that Jimi used, but at best they are only apeing him ( even Stevie Ray didn't manage to come this close). VERY impressive band all around and managing to reproduce one of Jimi's greatest pieces is no mean feat. Superb.

It's a superb rendition of 1983 especially given that it's all done live, but you don't know the meaning of "literally".

It doesn't matter if this man is trying to be Hendrix or not. What matters is this musician is doing what he loves. He plays from his soul and it shows. He is playing the music that he loves and is obviously enjoying it. That is something no one can take away from him. Not you nor me. Let him be who he is. Obviously he has dedicated an entire career to following his dream. We should be so lucky. At least he had the drive and determination to do what he loves. And it is apparent that he could give a rat's ass what we think because he is still travelling around the world and playing to anyone and everyone who will listen. I admire you Mr. Hansen
I think he is an awsome Hendrix tribute player but he doesnt just play note for note but sound for sound which is a tru acomplishment. I agree he is awsome, i admire him and thnk some of his music is better than the original honestly.
David smith..exactly... he can actually do it note for note (check Machine Gun full version) but he managed to use Jimi's paint and brushes to make his own pictures....
@@MultiMK6 This is so beautifully described! I had the luck to see Randy once in my life and I didn't regret it at all. He's a true painter. Why would we blame him he uses the paint of the greatest guitar player ever lived on this planet. Music is about bringing vibes, goosebumps, tears, energy, inner silence. Music is not about who made what. Far back in time everything was thought from person to person. These days, only things have value when they are created by one single individual. Copying en transforming is one of the core things we do to learn. Our ancestors did it, we do it. We copy form our parents, why can't we copy musicians and enjoy the experience in reproducing and transforming this? Mozart, Bach and Vivaldi are also copied and transformed into new dimensions. Nobody complains about it. They're also dead. So what is actually the difference? Just because copyrights were invented? I totally agree everybody should receive a fair share for what they bring the world, bit I also think is spoils the true process of what music is all about...

+Maizerus I'm sure Jimi would of been totally blown away by Randy's amazing talent, especially when Jimi found out Randy is also from Seattle.. Randy saw Jimi perform live at Seattle's Sicks stadium July 26th 1970 when Randy was just 15 years old, unfortunately Jimi died just two months later.. That Seattle show gave Randy the Hendrix bug, by the mid to late 70s Randy's dedication paid off so he began performing his Hendrix tribute live and the audience just loved it..

For any of you who want to bash Randy for being a "so-called" Jimi Tribute Act, I suggest you look into the history of his guitar playing & how he came to be what he is. He absolutely pays true respect to the music & legacy of Jimi unlike many. He's no joke.
Incredible version of Hendrix' 1983... by Randy and band. They captured the shifting, sci-fi , psychedelic blues of this masterpiece , that was never played live. Randy is the real deal..awesome guitar player !

One of the most "unpretentious" musicians today. Very humble and not out for himself. Just following his passion. More than I can say for the likes of most everyone else today.

Never forget buying the Electric Ladyland album after school at age 15, and my Mom taking a look at it as I walked in the door. When she saw the '1983: A merman I Should Turn To Be' listed in the song tracks, she stated "what kind of crap is this you brought home?" It was circa 1975, about seven years after the original release of the album. I listened to it until the vinyl wore out.
Lol, I can relate to this. I had Electric Ladyland in the early 70's and there was a period I listen to side C everyday probably for at least a year and a half straight. And my mom hated it, I think because of the spacey intro to this song, which I loved.
LOL - I can totally relate. I had it on a 4 track reel-to-reel, and I fell asleep with the headphones one. I slept through the whole album until the sweet guitar solo on Moon Turn The Tides... and that woke me out of a dead sleep... so eerie... haunting... beautiful. I'd never heard anything like it before or after.

Firstly, it is some of the most technically complex music ever created, analog, with a track-layering recording technique devised by Kramer in the studio, so pre-recorded track compilation tapes would have to be generated beforehand, and played as accompanying music during the song, so to re-create the full soundstage that was accomplished by Jimi, and Eddie in the safety of the studio. Then there's the issue of who would play the manually-challenging bass parts live, as Jimi did the bass-work solo in the studio; also, Chris Wood would have to be onstage with Jimi, to recreate his classic underwater-sounding flute accompaniment, a critical aspect of the Atlantis Approach sequence. There are a number of reasons why Jimi's undersea masterpiece might not be presented live at the time, to include anticipating future sound-tech innovations becoming the next-step of production excellence, along with Jimi's high standards of quality that infused all of his productions, always.
But I think the main reason, and the very sad one, is that Jimi had shelved the 1983 Live! project until a later date, perhaps after his life had come under more personal control, by himself, as he was such an A-list, world famous celebrity, being run a mile-a-minute to generate revenue for his rat-back manager Jeffery, and felt he didn't have the intensive personal time, at that point in time, to process 1983 Live! into the spectacular production it should be.
The so sad aspect is that he had no concept he would perish so soon in his young life, so he put things on hold, to revisit them at a later date (like we all do), knowing that after things had settled down a bit, he would go full power on 1983 Live!, as he should, but only because it still stands as the first, and greatest progressive rock song ever created, with a second-to-none framework of analog recording techniques binding it together as a sonic masterwork, the likes of which humanity will never see again in a thousand years, because giants walked the earth back then, giants of the recording studio.
Jimi did everything he could, to give us all he could, hoping to share his universal wisdom, and we are all so fortunate to be alive in this era that produced him. He still does share, to this day, never waning, and will continue sharing for as long as sound recordings exist for humanity to dream by.

Okay man, here you have person that said to himself many years ago (age 14) I've got to save this style of music for future generations and give it credibility. Today's music doesn't even come close to the creativity and emotion of the 60's. I don't even know what to say about this other than thank you Randy for your devotion and foresight to keep this iconic paradigm in existence. We as boomers and Hendrix fans cannot thank you enough for your performances of a rock legend. Also, thanks for your partner muscians who I'm sure, share your love, for something that transcends time itself. Wish I could see you guys live!

@@ufowalter I just had an epiphany..lol. Randy has been Jimi longer than Jimi was Jimi. He has been playing Jimi's music longer than Jimi did. And he is damned good at it. I was lucky enough to see Jimi at his last show in the US, At the H.I.C. in Honolulu 8-1-1970.. I treasure that night. I have yet to see Randy live. I am getting a bit old and may not get to. Yes Randy is channeling Jimi. Give Randy a hug for me, tell him "I get it". I am "Experienced"..You guys have kept Jimi 's music alive and it is appreciated by anyone from back in the day..who loved Jimi . Rock on guys.. Stay safe.

Seeing Randy Hansen in 1983 at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco I was 18 he stood on my table and smoked all my weed and play guitar like a madman there were photograph was outside of the Old Waldorf selling photos of him I purchased a few of the photos and he autographed them for me right away no problem with an awesome dude can't believe is still around playing guitar and singing just as beautiful as ever people people who have never heard of he really are missing out on a great guitar player even though he plays Hendrix you so authentic

I've watched and enjoyed this vid several times, and I have to thank ufowalter for posting and Randy for doing. wow. Many people my age lost Jimi when we were just really starting to rock. Since then, it's always been a matter of grasping at incomplete recordings and various best-of albums that have a few familiar songs and some other stuff, or mix tapes that hold amazing promise or...you know the rest, right? But I have always admired Randy. A lot! He captures the spirit and makes music with intensity and true love. In this song, he also captures much of the delicacy of Hendrix, too. Lighter Salute? Hell yeah!

Saw Randy Hansen 3-4 times back in the day. Always had a blast. Always fun. The 1st time I saw him he was strictly doing a Hendrix tribute as Randy Hansen's Machine Gun. He then started doing some on his own stuff later. But the shows were always outstanding. If he captures anything about Jimi, it is the sheer joy of playing and turning people on. I missed Hendrix by 5 years, so at the time I saw these shows as a 17 year old in 1978 it was as close as I would ever get.
Seen Randy in 78-79 at the swing auditorium in San Bernardino Ca and the bands performance of this tune was spot on of that of the ELL record -- not to mention Power of Love (that iconic band of gypsy's live opening solo he simply nailed it). Right on Walter, right on -- thanks.
I respect the fact that many musicians have kept Hendrix' music alive. Doug Pinnick from King's X is doing a Hendrix tour. I moved to California in 1978 and a short time after, I discovered a Hendrix tribute band led by Randy Hansen. I finally got to see him perform in a small club in Pomona. I was completely blown away, and to this day I personally feel that this man plays the music of Jimi Hendrix better than anyone else. Wish he would come back down to California one day. I'd love to hear him play live again. Anyone who can play 1983 as he does would be considered a phenom.

For the first 3 years I never really knew that he was international worldwide...
I knew he played Jimi Hendrix stuff and did a couple of his own projects, seen him play at some local Seattle clubs ... Etc...
We've always just interacted as friends and that's always how it's been since then...
Should give anyone who doesn't already know an idea of how genuine and humble this man is...
So yeah,
I've got some cool friends and
I feel that way because of the genuine humility they have in their hearts...

I never got to see Hendrix but I did see Randy at a small venue. Absolutely incredible, he seemed to be channeling the spirit of Jimi Hendrix. He came out into the audience and walked across the armrests of the seats, standing over me with one foot on each armrest. He didn't copy Hendrix. He was simply amazing. I've been wanting to hear this song, can't find a decent recording of Hendrix then Randy Hansen popped up and I got my fix.
Robin Potter Hi Robin. Thanks for your comment. I play with Randy nearly 20 years now and you described exactly what I felt when I saw him the first time. Back then, Horst Stachelhaus, the former bassplayer for Randy, invited me to a show near my home town and I was expecting a Hendrix cover band, which I thought was kind of uncool, even though I heard that he was very good. After 2 minutes I was converted. He did not only cover, he really was able to call the same spirit. It was kind of shocking for me.
Later I was asked to join the band, I didn’t even have to think twice. He really is an original. Where did you see the show you were talking about ?

Yep saw Randy in Houston and it just shocked me I was stunned for one cause no body played the tunes he did live not even Hendrix on some of them... I still have the gold herco pic he threw at me at the end of the show. He played all the hits and all the obscure Jimi that was never played live only it sounded exactly like the recordings. I think the spirit of Jimi burns bright in that man and hes far from gone nor forgotten.

Mr. Smith you are dead on. I always appreciate a musician who plays with heart and soul verses the so called technical uptight approach. I have been fortunate to have lived a long enough life and been exposed to various periods of music. I first heard JIMI in 1967 and was hooked from the get go. But I was open minded enough to appreciate those who have come after him. The list is long and varied starting with the man himself to Led Zepplin, The Allman Brothers, Sea Level, The Dixie Dregs, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, Robin Trower, Stevie Ray, Hiroshima, Al DiMeola, Steve Vai, Gary Moore, Thin Lizzy, The B-52's, The Clash, The Brains.......Satch.......Sevendust....and the list goes on. I was fortunate to have grown up and lived in Atlanta Ga. and have seen each one of these acts over the years. Good music speaks for itself and owes no one an apology. We should keep an open mind. I am 57 years old and listen to T-Paine and Akon for Christ sakes!!!!!! and I am caucasion!!!!!!1 LOL

I used to play Jimi's original of this every morning on my dad's (mono - it was before we had stereo!) record player when I was 15 years old before I went to school. An absolutely superb rendition of this classic tune. Brilliant!
Randy, as far as I'm concerned, having grown up in the 60's, having seen Hendrix three times in concert my self, and having listened to his albums, about one million times, and knowing every single lick and rift, I think it would be more difficult to figure out, memorize, and reproduce Hendrix's skill, than to create it originally. Therefore: in my opinion, your the greatest! Thank you.

Randy Hansen is amazing. He defies Logic. He is the only player in history, who has ever come close to perfecting Him, the unnameable, and, who has touched The Hem Of God. I saw him in 1983, and it was a show that I have never forgotten. He is a brilliant man. He is a reincarnation, his fingers, and his beautiful personification!!! Thank you Randy!!!

Randy, Ufo and Walter are just incredible! I bought Band of Gypsies 1970 and know every millisecond of it. Same with Electric Ladyland. Randy‘s playing gives me joy and especially this version here, nobody ever did so well!
I play with classical musicians and the other day we had a heated discussion when I praised Randy. I managed to convince these classical guys by saying that covering Hendrix so perfect is culturally as "valuable" as playing Mozart or Beethoven perfectly well. I do hope Randy keeps on doing this for a long time and that others will follow. I am convinced that Hendrix will be remembered and played in 200 years and Randy sets the milestone :-)

I never tire of this song and have been listening to it for about 50 years. Still amazed by everything Jimi did and appreciate Randys interpretation. No one else to my knowledge even attempts to play this one.
