Where is the preorder schedule button on Amazon KDP for my paperback or hardcover? | Self-Publishing

  • Today we’re going to talk about the murky muddy world of setting up a pre-order for your book when you are self-publishing. Stay tuned.
    What is a pre-order?
A pre-order is when a book is set to be published on September 1, but readers can buy it ahead of time. They order the book in June when they hear about it or in July when the cover is revealed. They buy it now and the book is sent to them on September 1. This can be for the digital version, the print version, audio. The idea is that the publisher is capturing reader interest now when there is a lot of hype around the book instead of hoping they’ll remember to buy it later.
    Terminology
Pre-order is this specific functionality of purchasing the book now ahead of its official release.
Some authors call this a pre-sale as well. Those terms can be used interchangeably.
What you can do on Amazon KDP
On Amazon KDP you can set up a pre-order for your eBook. The release date is Septemeber 1, pre-order can start tomorrow.
For the paperback and hardcover, you can pre-schedule your book.
That’s a new term. That one can’t be used interchangeably with pre-order. This pre-schedule functionality allows you to set the release date ahead of time, but not the purchase functionality. Previously you would upload your print book to Amazon KDP and sometime in the next 72 hours it would go live. This is annoying if you are trying to coordinate a launch around one specific day to announce it is live.
What you can do on IngramSpark
Here is where IngramSpark comes in. You CAN set a print preorder (and eBook preorder) on this system. You set both the street date and publication date for, in this continued example, September 1. Why you can’t say pre-order? Check yes, publication date: Sept 1. I don’t know.
    The two-platform pre-order system
So the paperback or hardcover is on preorder and pushed to the retail network… including Amazon. Then on launch day, you upload your book to KDP and that listing supercedes the ingramspark one. To do this you have to own your ISBN!
This is complex. This is added levels of detail. This is added weeks of planning before you announce your preorder because it takes time to approve your digital proof and then for Ingram to push it to its network
Is it worth doing a pre-order?
So after hearing this madness, you may decide a preorder isn't for you and your book. Or maybe you only do an ebook preorder but the print is out so you can get reviews. It’s murky. There really isn’t one right answer. I do preorders for my books, but you may not want to fiddle with all this.

Hi MK - do you have a video (or page etc) for a first time IngramSpark self-publisher on how IngramSpark establishes online retail pages for new IngramSpark titles, especially Amazon? Your videos have been super-helpful - thank you!

We just had a conversation about this at a recent gathering of writer friends. This is so helpful! I’ll be sure and send everyone the link to this video.

So happy I can help and clarify this unnecessarily confusing work around. If only KDP would grant us the print pre-order, so much stress would be saved.

Hi @1MKWilliams, could I perhaps get your advice regarding how to prevent the situation where I publish to one platform, then pirates get my book and publish it to other platforms without my knowledge or consent? I am new to publishing and I just had a look at Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, Draft2Digital, Apple Books and Google Books, and I haven’t uploaded anything yet. In order to leave as little chance to pirates as possible, should I publish to all of these at once?
There is also an issue with my content being a serialised comic, which is to be released to KDP issue by issue. I plan to eventually get all the issues together in a book, but I worry that pirates may beat me to this, or they may take my issues and publish them to other platforms. How do I prevent these situations?
    Thanks in advance!

Pirates are super scary and concerning for all artists. However, if someone is going to steal something there is only so much we can do to prevent it. Using credible distribution platforms (all the ones you listed) is a great start. IF you see that your book has been pirated you need to send a DMCA takedown request, I have a video on that process here: ua-cam.com/video/Sgqs97jhJhs/v-deo.html

Another super helpful video, thank you. I have successfully uploaded my paperback to Ingram and my ebook on KDP and I can see it there. Release date July 31st. I also uploaded my paperback to KDP successfully BUT I cannot 'see' my paperback on KDP. Maybe it has just not come up yet? (it was approved) or does it not appear to the public until release date July 31st. That''s my 1st question. Second question is How do I promote pre-orders to a book that no one can see? Unless it does appear in the coming days/weeks... I know now I should have uploaded paperback to Ingram and held it in 'save' for KDP but it is too late for that. Thank you in advance for reading xxx

Yep because the KDP pre-schedule just lets you schedule the paperback to go live on that day, it will not show up for sale early like the pre-order for the ebook does. It is a ridiculous and confusing policy. The only way to get a print preorder on Amazon.com is via IngramSpark

@@1MKWilliams that’s what I thought. That cancels out all the ideas of hype on social media - there’s no point because there’s nothing to buy and worse, it doesn’t even exist for people to see! Is there anything I can do? I’ve set the date on KDP already and I want to promote it. Maybe change the paperback to ‘save’? Trying to think of anything 🤷🏼‍♀️ It throws the whole social media plan in the bin until after it’s already released.
I just noticed it’s on Barnes & Noble as a preorder so maybe through IS, it is already on all the other platforms? Can I do something with that?
