Me on my twitter like an hour ago: "I wanna do leatherworking but I don't have the tools and tools cost money and I don't have that either." You: "no excuses."
The only tool you really need for this design is a sharp knife. He also used a couple of punches and a stretcher, but you could pretty easily improvise something else for those.
E Co. have you got a box cutter? A good box cutter, single blade ones not the ones that have an extendable blade that snaps off. Maybe a Scalpel? It’s got to be sharp, and sturdy! My partner started doing leatherwork as a hobby 35 years ago, and he's taught me some things. You don't need much to stat out, I highly doubt the Natives had all the tools we have, but they did great leather items they used every day!
I'm having a hard time to even get the leather. There's no place near me that sells leather. At least online shopping make it easier for me to get the leather now.
Thank you this very doable with a few dollar store tool. Metal straw punch. Break blade exacto. Small chisel, or sharpened spatula. People can find the drive for progress and look at what they already have. Enthusiasm and a belief in your own creativity, will take you far. Good luck fellow earthlings.
Honestly the stitching and rivets have never been a deterrent for me but this is absolutely ingenuous all the same. I'm definitely making a larger version of this, thanks!
Yes absolutely. Me too am thinking to make a larger saddle bag for my Harley but again not to fix on the cycle, just to carry on my shoulder.Would be grateful if Our creative Boss would help us by creating a video.
What’s wild is that I bought a belt pouch that was assembled like this at a renaissance fair and it’s outlasted all my stitched belt pouches I’ve had. It’s such a simple design but it holds together surprisingly well
Very cool looking. I would like to take that idea and make larger saddlebags for my motorcycle, somehow incorporating more of a seamless design for weather protection. Can you steer me in the right direction?
Just learning but have made knife sheaths, small pouches men and ladies, hand grips for canes and staffs. Used leather ti to repair some Alice packs. Made my own moccasins from scratch with my own pattern. Must try that again. Like your work. Tools i use things i can carry in my backpack.
Not sure why I wasn't already subscribed to your channel. I binge watch your stuff over and over from time to time... Very informative, and enjoyable content!
You could probably just scale the pattern up but I haven't done that before. May take some fiddling. :) That said maybe I'll do some options if I have time
I love this for how clever it is in keeping it simple... and yet looks pretty strong with such a wide strap for the weave. Where the two strips are tied together are probably the weak points.
@@DarkHorseWorkshop Yeah. I was thinking you could overlap it more and do 4-6 holes to weave the lace through to spread out the load. Should still look good.
there's a TON of possibilities here.. could even work in a heavy canvas with a leather strap (would need to do buttonholes or otherwise reinforce the slots)
Have been wanting to get into leather work. Inherited a stash of it; good to start with. Would be a great first project for someone who has never done it, 👍.
I like both Lonsdale Leather in Vancouver and Tandy in Surrey. (Depends on what I am shopping for.) Awesome video - great to see another local leather crafter! Huge thumbs up! 👍
Just bought this pattern with the plan to make it a belt bag for my Ren Faire outfit! Can you please clarify what you mean by "weave the edges back in the direction they came from"? I'm not sure what that means. I'll probably stitch a belt loop onto the back although to keep it no-sew I suppose cutting a couple of slits in the back would work as well.
@@DarkHorseWorkshopI ended up looping the ends back in a sort of knot and then riveting them together in a loop that fit over my belt. Worked great. Thanks for the pattern!
I like this project and and am wondering how well it can be made for black powder possibles bag and a little larger what are the size deminsions for this project
Looks good, just realized that is how the pouch for my wifes pirate outfit was made. Also how do you keep oil tanned leather from looking dryed out after a while
Great tutorial! Would love to see a video on finishing edges for different leathers I'm a beginner and I like chrome tan and oil tanned leather better just because it's look and flexiblity but I get discouraged working and projects and my edges don't look well compared to how well veg tan burnishes. I find it hard to get a clean edge with little to no "fuzz".
@@DarkHorseWorkshop Good to know, I did buy the pattern because "why reinvent the wheel" and thought that it would make a great combo. Like a "Traveler's Journal" set. Add a side slot for the strap so it sits across the chest. Looks like I have some modifications to make. Dope channel BTW! Of course I subbed.
Ended up designing a whole new bag to go with the journal. The journal pattern is wicked simple but works so well. Anyhow, thanks for inspiring me to make my own bag pattern, first time, and building it out.
Dude! You're here in Vancouver! I've seen various UK / European "bushcrafters" mention Darkhorse in their videos and always thought you were over there. Going to visit your Etsy shop and start with this project. Maybe see you around or on set somewhere one day. Do you have a workshop / studio that one could come and visit?
Can totally come say hi. It's snot open to the public but I don't mind people stopping in to take a look. Feel free to email me info@darkhorseworkshop.com and do you remember which channels mentioned me?
My only excuse is that I can't find the pattern. Is there a downloadable PDF somewhere? Love the design, have been cutting leather using a Cricut maker and want to cut something like this that replaces stitching with interlocking tabs.
Any chance you could list the tools used in this video like in your other videos? Trying to track down the size of the oblong punch you used, I'm thinking it's 1".
Thanks! I think this will be a good start for me, and get some christmas presents setup... maybe try my hand at artwork on it too. What size of leather sheet did you use in your video?
why no link to this exact pattern, and it doesnt go to etsy with the etsy link? im really interested but can not find the patter on your website theres to many things to look through to find this.

I have found white charcoal artist pencil are quite fantastic for marking leather they work much like tailors chalk and brushes off quite readily
Looks great. Love those soft curves. Feel inspired to make one for a tin with belt loops.
I dig simple things like that. I'ma go work on mines 2 nite!
Im so glad i found this channel. Love it! Very cool
Thank you and you are wonderful for allowing us to succeed! Hugs from Halifax
Hey great video I'd like to try this but I can't order the pattern but I wonder if you might share the detentions of this bag.
It's not very big. Maybe 8 inches tall but 3.5 wide by 1.5 inches deep.
I just want to say you are inspiring
Just got it. Dropped a tiny 10% tip.
Awe thanks. :)

I thought that the rivets and stitching were the best part, but this shows me that less can definitely be more!

Simple. To the point.

Have you made a back pack using this style?

This is my 10th time watching this video. I love how it comes out. though could you make it bigger?
Easily just scale it up

What length was the weaving strap? I could’ve missed it in the video but I didn’t find that information
Absolutley perfect! Love this

Awesome informational educational video experience Y'alls

No excuses anymore!! Hahaha.
Tks for this video!!!!
Cool beans and just what I need.

Na, just something I came up with.

Also how do you keep oil tanned leather from looking dryed out after a while
I use beeswax but you can just use clear oil, like corn oil for example 😉
Thomas Pelzer thank you
Wow. Want one!
I made this but I wanted to make it a buckled strap. How would I do that without cutting and putting D rings?
Just cut one end and put a buckle.
