@@sphaera3809 Ok my neighborhood is full of old Peugeot 108 Diesel, so i guess a Taycan Turbo would be just right. 😂🤣✌ I stay with the Model Y its larger and costs much less.
@@sphaera3809 If you don’t care about the lightening quick acceleration, go with the e-tron. That was #1 choice coming out of a Q7, but there was that issue right when they first came out with the electric cords and fire possibility, so sales were put on hold. Plus, they were way overpriced at the time. They’ve come down since then and the delta isn’t as much since you still get the full $7,500 for the e-tron, which rides MUCH better, charging is faster, and isn’t that far off on the range as Teslas are way over promised on range (I owned a 3 and Y). Now that I don’t need as much room, waiting for the Q4 etron. Should be a winner.
I own a model 3 for one year now, Carlos’ opinions are 100% fact, But the car is unlike any other vehicle on the road and I love it and can’t wait for my model Y next.
I agree, all his point are accurate. I have had my Y for 5 months now and my biggest complaint is the poor ride quality. It is starting to really bother me and I have the Long range, 20" wheels and even still ride quality is not great.
32K miles on my Model Y and I haven't had nearly any of the issues outlined in this video... Sorry to hear that. I'm a big Tesla fan, but also honest. I'm not afraid to admit I have some panel gaps, AP has randomly hit the brakes, the display has frozen a time or two... the usual. Even so, this has honestly been the best car I've ever owned! The overall day to day experience is unlike anything else and I cant see myself buying another brand for a very long time. I have a CyberTruck reservation, so I'm looking forward to a review of that! Also: at 12:12, you mention you have to pull over for the restart. Not sure exactly what you mean here, as you can perform the display restart while driving. I tested this myself, even Autopilot works fine while its restarting!
He is a bit bias, he is talking about the performance model as a family car when the clear choice for a family would be the long range model which is cheaper and comfier.
@@stockdetective4396 I got the performance as a family car. Zero regrets. Was in the market for a bmw x3m then switched to myp. The car is not perfect by any means. And I was lucky to get one without panel gaps. But it’s the best car I have own. I have solar so my gas bill has been zero since. Plus my job that I commute to give me free charging. It’s not for everyone though. Do your homework and nothing is wrong with waiting as the technology will get better
They can't say that in front of lawyers... they might get sued if the power cycle 'causes' an accident. Thanks for saying that though I'm about to get a model y hopefully
@@whitlockbr No problem! Hey, if you're interested in buying a Model Y that's great. If you don't mind, you can use my referral code darrin85089 so you and I both get 1,000 free Supercharger miles.
I have a 2018 MS and have had to reset the screen several times while continuing to drive. It has not been a problem. It does take a minute or so but I can still control the cars direction. Ray
@@te86a You dont have to do a "hard power cycle" to reset it. Simply wrong guide by Edmunds, who is always negative biased towards Tesla. Every small or non-negative things get exaggerated. 1) Just see the video how they negatively mention the nice wheels (!!?) - but its ok on the corvette (??). 2) And several times mention the black screen (althoug common on all new cars, and you DONT have to stop - but kan keep going, 3) AND they mention that Tesla say you should only charge to 90%, so range is even less (come on now). Tesla is famous for best in class long lives batteries - and 90% is a recommendation when not going for at long trip. Plenty of taxi's are Tesla and they charge to 100% daily and have 150.000miles on the clock. 4) The full selv driving system is NOT working - everybody is (or should be) aware of that - and probably wait buying it. Tesla is still way in front of their peers - and the FREE Autopilot does the job fantastic (also compared to peers like Benz or Porsche). So do som praise of that instead of only bashing the FSD. So please Edmunds stop this BS
I agree with most of the review. I have a similar experience with my 2021 Tesla 3. Nevertheless I still love it. I will reserve judgement on the vehicles durability when the vehicle has 100,000+ miles. I also own a 2021 Mach E and in my opinion the Mach E is a better vehicle overall.
Agree with Carlos Lago's analysis of the Y Performance 100%,the FSD needs lots of integration and updating, the ride is extremely harsh and uncomfortable,no screen outages on mine,7800 miles and its a '21 model, those wheels are beautiful but extremely easy to damage due to the fact that the wheel rims are flush with the outer edge of the tire walls, both passenger side wheels have curb rashes and me too use a black marker to minimize visible damage.
I can't tell you how refreshing it is to get a review from someone who isn't a zealot or fanboy. Honest reviews of life with a Tesla vehicle are far and few between. Personally when and if the day comes that I purchase an EV it will likely be a Tesla just for access to the undisputed best charger network...but it's nice to have real info when making that decision. Note to self - stay away from 21 inch wheels.
It’s really hard to get a balanced review on Teslas. Most poor reviews of Teslas get "page ranked" down. I’d use bing to search for honest Tesla reviews. But even that is becoming hard.
Agree on all points. Engineering Explained actually has a video about wheels and tires on his Model 3 performance. He found a really great option for some 18in ones that have worked well for him and when I get a Model 3 that swap will be one of the first things I do. Not sure if this would apply to the Model Y but might be with taking a look.
I have a MXP and intentionally went with 20 inch wheels instead of the 22s for so many reasons. The ride is better. The acceleration is better. The range is better. The towing capacity is better. The risk of blowouts is lower. The tires are cheaper. The risk of curb rash is lower. Big wheels with low profile tires are a fad. All of these things are true on any vehicle.
@@jonathansage2147 Some fashion defies all common sense. My first new car had 14 inch wheels. I imagine before I pass, rims will be the size of a house.
@@savedfaves we were turned off by the Mach-E when we drove it. The ride quality was lousy -- really soft -- and the interior felt like a Ford, with heavy, squishy doors. If you like Fords, then yes, I'm sure it's great. Also, our demo had build issues. The mirrors weren't adjustable and the hatch was malfunctioning. This was a dealer demo! Very disappointing experience.
You contradict yourself by saying the MYP is really a family SUV yet you drag race the hell out of it. That is the beauty of the Model Y. It does both well plus it doesn’t use gasoline. Yeah the Corvette may ride better but you can’t take it skiing or go surfing.
Thanks for giving an honest long term review. I truly want to own this Model Y but the many problems it has is just unacceptable for a vehicle in this price class.
Really enjoy videos like this and in general from Carlos. Not taking a shot at the other guys just think Carlos has got the presentation skills to a T.
Model 3 owner here for the last 17 months. Video was spot on. But, I do love the car. Also bought full self-driving. I would completely recommend AGAINST buying it at almost any price. I wouldn't opt in for that again. Feel like I have been duped by Tesla. I'm actually surprised there hasn't been a class action lawsuit against full self driving. Tesla promises made, Tesla promises broken time and time again. I would finally say that the service network is not robust enough for the number of cars sold so far. Depending upon where you live, you could wait quite a while for service. I'm talking 3 weeks minimum in my case.
To be clear this is just the display computer, the car is still fully functional to be driven manually during the reboot process, autopilot can keep driving as well but use extra caution since you don’t have visual alerts and only minimal audio alerts and feedback until after the reboot completes. In 2.5 years with the model 3 I manually rebooted probably 5 times across the ~50 software versions during that time. No manual reboots that I can recall in 2021, this was all further back.
After 40,000 miles with a Model 3 and FSD, I can tell you that I've had MUCH better experience with Autopilot than you have. I use it for about 98% of my highway miles. It has been wonderful. Is it perfect? No, i.e. sometimes it picks up the wrong speed limit (especially on new construction roads) and slows down when it shouldn't. But it also amazes me every time I use it, and it keeps getting better and better. I can't imagine buying a car without it. The system in the Mach-E is nowhere near as good and won't even change lanes for you. In fact, the wheel just stops operating when you turn on the blinker! Just check out the many UA-cam comparison videos. Autopilot is by far the industry leader, and it works almost anywhere (in the US at least).
I, too, love my autopilot. I use it daily and it relieves the stress of traffic. I look at other drivers, they're all so tense! I think the problem may be that the Edmunds people are always changing cars and driving different routes, so in those cases it's harder to use autopilot. I use it on long drives and my regular routes, because in those circumstances I can anticipate its few idiosyncrasies and I know the stretches where I can trust it.
I love using the autopilot on those long highway drives. I would like to try out the Super Cruise that is on the the Bolt EUV, looks like a great system
Got 60k on our Model 3. Mostly drive on AP for long trips. Totally agree. Also still glad I went with 18" wheels for the P version instead of performance wheels like he complains about here.
I prefer the y model despite its flaws. All cars have flaws, some more than others. I drive a 2017/Gt 350 which is a long way from perfect. It eats oil , bad gas mileage , panel gaps everywhere, harsh ride, imperfect paint , cheesy interior. All of this coming from a car company that has been in business for over 100;years!. But I still enjoy it!. I think I will be ok owning a Y performance with it’s flaws. I test drove both the 3 and Y performance and just fell in love the way they drive and accelerate compared to my Gt 350. As a result, I have a Y performance on order. I only get maybe 185-200 mile range before my gas light comes on. I will gladly take a 260 plus range from a Ev any day especially when you can charge at home and replenish that range every day. Moral of the story, no car is perfect.
I have 2020 Model Y Long range with 19” wheel. I have 40000 miles with non of the problems you mentioned. I had one rear passenger door light bulb went out and couple of flat tires which isn’t Fault of Tesla. I love this car!!! I bought a another one today to for my wife.
...and then you lose your speedometer for a good two minutes while driving down the freeway, with no idea if your turn signals are working without looking for your reflection in the car in front of you. I've never lost access to basic controls when my infotainment has frozen in any other car.
Come to think of it, my infotainment has only ever frozen in a 2013 Focus I used to own. Work has 2017 Escapes with an identical system and those have been problem-free.
@@supraphonic88 I’m not arguing that the situation sucks. Just pointing out that you can reset the screen without pulling over and pressing the brakes.
I own a Tesla, invest in Tesla, and believe that EVs are the future, and I completely agree with this review. For the average person that buys an EV, they will charge at home while they sleep and therefor the charging network really doesn't matter. I can count on one hand how many times I've used the supercharging network to charge more than 30-40% of the battery at a time, in the last 3 years. After replacing 3 tires and 1 wheel due to potholes, I ended up replacing my wheels to a smaller 18" wheel with bigger tires, and ride quality improved quite drastically. As for the range, I'm in the same boat, I've never gotten anywhere near what the EPA rating says I should I'm always 20%-40% less than what's advertised.
My Audi A3 is 17 years old, runs like a dream, heated seats still work, all electric windows still work. Very economical of fuel and starts well in winter.
What do you expect from one of the first of any model automobile, ICE or EV? You purchased a low production number Model Y that was just released! Do you think the BMW i3 was any good, or the Toyota Prius or others for example when their models first hit the streets? Hello! Also, Performance means PERFORMANCE! If you don't like the lowered suspension and 21" Uberturbine wheels, than you should have purchased the mommies non-performance version! Yes, that's right both Autopilot enhanced and FSD are in Beta mode - you knew that when you purchased the Tesla, but it does continually receive updates improving the features, performance and range. Geez! I'm getting sick and tired of reviewers tarnishing the Tesla Brand! Sometimes I wonder if pockets are getting greased by legacy automakers or the oil companies because they dislike Tesla or Elon! I've owned performance BMW's and even a muscle car from the 70's - a 71 Mustang Mach 1 429 Cobra Jet, the first and only Ford product that came from the factory with the GM Rochester carburetor...did you know that? Of course I replaced the Rochester with a re-jetted 800 CFM Holly, electric fuel pump and an Offenhauser high-rise manifold, just to name a few mods. I've been driving and racing cars before you were born! Currently, own a 2020 Red Performance Model Y and love it!
Glad to see this review. I'm a mostly happy owner of a 2020 Model 3 Standard Range, with no Autopilot or "full self-driving." It's a great car at a great price that's really fun to drive, with great charging infrastructure and okay but overpromised/underdelivered range. My issue is that I'm a professional transportation planner with a degree in engineering, and it's really off-putting that Tesla is still trying to sell something that no respected professional in the field believes it can safely deliver. If they could swallow their pride and put that aside, they'd make a great car, but as it stands I'm losing faith in the company to do the right thing, and I don't think I'd return back for another Tesla. Hopefully by the time my car is due for replacement the charging infrastructure advantage will be a wash.
"respected professional in the field"? Hmm. This sounds a lot like you are trying to justify your view. Do you really think that Tesla will never figure out FSD? Seems to me it's not a question of if, but when. As to overpromised/undelivered range, my experience over 25k miles is that the car delivers exactly what was promised. For Edmunds to ding the car for not meeting EPA range while not using it as per the EPA standard is rather meaningless. Carlos made it clear that they drag raced their car a lot....so would one reasonably expect it to meet the EPA standard?
@@dangrass It can't go the rated range at highway speeds. The EPA test isn't entirely done at highway speeds so folks really shouldn't be using that to determine highway range, but it's pretty obvious that's what your average person is going to do. Tesla really ought to publish range values by a couple common highway speeds, but that wouldn't be marketable so they've chosen the higher EPA range which is effectively meaningless for an actual driver trying to make a long range trip (which is the only time range matters). I own two Model Xs. I love them dearly. The EPA range is still garbage.
it is ridiculous to call it 'full-self driving' when it's not that. Autopilot is not quite as bothersome to me -- I mean, planes have 'autopilot' too but pilots have to be in charge. The unfortunate thing is that the language around it encourages bone-headed, self-destructive behavior. It might not matter -- I mean, people manage to kill themselves and others in their vehicles every day, sometimes by doing really dumb things -- but it would certainly look better and wouldn't feel so much like false and misleading advertising.
If its being compared to a Corvette(sports car) and it still is harsher. Its a luxury SUV so that should have been taken into consideration at the design phase. You can get an Escalade with that size wheels and it probably rides better. I think the issue here is as it compares to other brands it the same class

I’m 69 and love driving again, thanks Elon and Tesla, I’m a kid again.
Appreciate the straightforwardness/honesty of your review! I've seen a lot of other review videos that come across as having kind of a "fanboy" agenda. It's refreshing to hear someone answer the question of "Would I buy this car"? with a maybe.
I will never buy another car without Autopilot. Freeways it truly shines! Can be very nerve-racking in heavy traffic but it still drives better than most humans even in heavy traffic.
Complaining about range and then recommending you look at a mach e first is so contradictory. Have fun finding a reliable charging network with a mach e. Understand you guys have to seem objective, but if thats the case then just be objective. For the average person, its tesla. Nothing else comes close
Lots of folks should be able to get into an EV at lots of price points. And as the owner of a Kia Soul EV, I have few complaints about Chargepoint, EV Go, and Electrify America. Can't and won't shell out $70k for any car.
What about a standard range model y? Those are pretty comparable in price. Good to hear there’s availability of other networks, my only other question is have you done a road trip?
You can restart the screen while you drive. It only takes about a minute for it to come back on. You're not constantly touching your screen and adjusting controls while you drive. Waiting a minute to adjust a control may be inconvenient but not a big of a deal as the video is making it considering most people are paying more attention to the drive vs constantly needing to make adjustments using the screen while driving.
It would be worth while to buy a new Long Range Dual Motor Model Y with standard wheels, not the upgraded ones. The suspension should be a little less firm than the performance, and the bigger tires will make the ride less harsh.
we will really see in 2030 & 2040 when its out of warranty !!! , every car is still good after only 1 year and to all the people who say nobody holds a car that long , I'm still driving my 1997 Honda Prelude after 24 years
Safe, fully autonomous vehicles will probably require some level of communication with the surrounding infrastructure of the road via microchips, radio singles, or the like. Thanks for the video!
I have been watching every vlogger reporting on the model Y for over a year. No one ever reported the problem with the screen rebooting as you did. This is crazy. I have enough problems rebooting my Xfinity boxes and my fire stick and I'm sitting down on my recliner. I was thinking of purchasing the model Y. But there is no way that I have to pull off the road to reboot my screen. This very dangerous. What is Tesla doing about it. Is this prevalent? Or is this just your car? I need answers. Please reply. Thank you .Justin.
I own two Model Xs. I've never had my screen go black. Also, you can restart it while driving by just pressing the scroll wheels without the brake. I've done this a few times when music stopped playing. Might have been overkill, but it's an easy way to resolve that problem without fiddling too much while driving.
Huge Tesla fan here but I can’t understand why somebody would pay 5K for FSD when it doesn’t work yet. If it was 500 bucks ok maybe but 5 or 10K...that’s just stupid. Also, can everybody just stop buying 21’ low pro tires. Of course the suspension sucks and you got a flat tire...what did you expect?
Because Tesla’s master plan says that people with FSD will be able to have their car go out and make them money picking up people and driving them around. It’s like an investment into future cash flow
I've had the anti-pinch windows go off on numerous cars while going over bumps. VW, Honda, Toyota... Not saying your opinion is wrong but the anti-pinch thing is probably not the best thing to derive that from.
Thanks for that honest review. I always worried about EVERYTHING being in that screen with no physical dials for a backup. And I don’t love the idea of interacting with a big Ipad while driving. Call me olds school but I like having physical buttons that muscle memory knows the location of without taking eyes off the road.
1) You can restart the system while driving without taking your hands off the wheel while autopilot is still engaged. 2) You can use voice commands to control pretty much everything in the car, so you never have to take your hands off the wheel or your eyes off the road. Buttons are less safe.
@@jonathansage2147 On the voice commands, perhaps. Tesla is not the only car company that's incorporated some voice control. Perhaps Tesla's is better than most but they don't always work well. And how comprehensive are the voice commands. See this... www.bbc.com/news/technology-53666222 Yes the windshield wipers auto turn on and off by themselves, but when the driver wanted to adjust the wiper speed during what was obviously not perfect weather (it was raining after all) the driver had to dig down a list of menus on that screen and got in a wreck. Versus having a manual control right by the steering wheel where I can take ONE hand off the wheel for 1 or 2 seconds turn a dial to change the speed up or down and still be looking down the road with full control of the car. And saying you CAN use you voice for everything sounds nice. But are people actually doing that in practice? Are they saying "adjust temperature to..." in a Model 3 99% of the time, or is it closer to reality to say they are looking down at the touch screen to adjust temp while moving 70% of the time? I suspect the latter is closer to the truth. Now autopilot may be helping control for the greater distraction and having autosteer counter the additional lane swerve it's hard to say. But I'd be curious what the "distracted driving" stats are after a few years of model 3 use vs cars that don't have so much controlled by a screen that takes your eyes off the road.
@@artmotocafela7874 perhaps. But the problem is these huge tablets directing everything invite your to mess with secondary items even more easily than your phone. I don’t mess with my phone while driving. I generally just put it on a favorite podcast when I start my drive and I generally don’t look at it again until I reach my destination. I’m still in an older car with no big multimedia screen, no CarPlay, no nothing and I don’t really miss not having it.
First, you should not have bought a Performance Y. You spent over half your review on issues that would be greatly mitigated on a LRMY without FSD. You should at least make that clear. I did not find this review helpful at all.
Great review and refreshing to see an objective take. This makes me glad I purchased my 2021 VW ID.4. It's not a perfect car by any means either, but it suits me better in a bunch of ways than the Model Y. Why can't Tesla fans accept that some people (like me) don't like the boring, spartan interior or the blobby shape or the big dumb tablet or the lies about true range or the expensive beta features or the poor build quality? Tesla builds cars for tech and speed junkies and that's OK too, if that's what floats your boat.
I have to start by mentioning that I am a Tesla fan, but my fanaticism is based on real life experiences with Tesla. I have a 2016 model S and I think I’ll keep it for ever, it has been the best and most reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned, a work horse. My wife had a model X and got tired of the Falcon wing doors especially when dropping off the kids at school. She has a model y and loves the simplicity of it. I had features on the model X that I only used a few times when the car was new , like the self presenting doors. I think people are staring to look for simplicity and functionality now. Even the ID4 has a more simplistic interior than their usual ice cars. And I like VW / Audi. Had passats and A4 and loved them. Going back to how I became a fan, I simply enjoyed my teslas like no other cars in the past. The piece of mind due to the very little maintenance, the lack of depreciation ( I sold my modelX after 4 years with a loss of 10k only) the day to day enjoyment. I am confident that many stories are very biased, especially when it comes to range. I am a calm driver most of the time and have an average energy consumption and range of more than what Tesla is stating. I noticed that Jalopnik and edmunds and other car critics just can’t stand tesla and my explanation is that they are somewhat corrupt. Teslas are not perfect, comparing the finishing of a Taycan or an E-Tron to my model S interior is a long discussion. Anyway, just wanted to explain that not all Tesla fans are suffering of a superiority complex, it’s kind of a long term effect.
Excelente video seguir asi.
You don't mention that the car that you bought isn't the one that you have because of feature updates from the free downloads. You seem to have had many more screen resets than most people (I have had only a couple in my Y), but you don't have to pull over to reset it. Just hot the two buttons as you are driving down the road. It may be a little disconcerting watching the display computer reset, but the car still drives, even if FSD is engaged. It's ONLY the display/audio computer that get's reset. Try it driving down any road, probably want to do it on a backroad first, to prove it to yourself. Radio stops, turn signal clicks stop (but signals still work). FSD works.
@@woo0131 I'm sorry, what? Lol it takes less than 30 seconds and if you can't gauge your speed based off vehicles around you, you shouldn't be driving in the first place.
I recently bought a Model Y and find the suspension isn't really all that bad but I have the 19" rims with gemini's. As for FSD...I don't have it and wouldn't pay that much for it anyway
Edmonds, are you affiliated with any Legacy auto? If you are it should be listed at the top of the screen. Would hate for others to assume that you’re readings are not biased in any way.
I've had my Model Y for more than a year and still love it. If you wanted a family crossover you should have gotten the cheaper regular long-range dual-motor version with more compliant 19" wheels-it's still crazy fast, but apparently you wanted a drag racer (so acknowledge that's why you bought that version, not as a daily driver). Also, I've never even tried my standard Autopilot because I like to drive (and don't do long trips)-and have no complaints about my own driving.
I would love to see you replace the wheels and tires with a high profile set, your car would likely feel like a new vehicle. We have the Model 3 SR with about 10,000 miles on it. I stayed with the higher profile tires for all of the reason you outlined, I have also had more flats with the low profile tires due to pot holes and curb/debris along the road. The standard autopilot seems to work pretty well, but I have experience the odd slow downs that seem to occur at the same place on many drives too and from work, and my screen has needed to be reset twice. Not because it went dark, but because the audio stopped playing on the media system. Overall it has be a very efficient, quiet and comfortable car and I have been pleased with it. My real life range is more like 200 miles, of which I only use about 175 between charges.
One of the things Auto Pilot has done well for years is Lane Keeping. Not only are Tesla GREAT at Lane keeping, they recognize large trucks and "bias" slightly to the opposite side of the lane to allow them more room (traffic permitting). I don't understand how lane keeping is an issue for Edmunds. It wasn't an issue in 2016 when Tesla only had one camera in the front, and certainly isn't today. You chose the low-profile tires and then complain about the ride quality. I would think Edmunds would already understand that low profile tires are harsher than regular tires. Highway lane change and Nav-On-Autopilot all work well on highways I was part of the Early Release Program for it in late 2019). I have driven my Model S and X with Nav-On-Autopilot for 1000's of highway miles. It’s taken interchanges and maneuvered through traffic with the car changing lanes matching the speed of adjacent lanes to do so. Correctly, FSD on city streets is not available but it was clear it would not be at the time of purchase and Tesla said as they got closer, the FSD price would increase since early customers paid for future advancements not yet available. Guess Edmunds didn't read the website. If you are going to critique FSD, please acknowledge that Tesla is working through tremendous AI challenges and providing updates on what challenges remain. Not only does FSD require software for the vehicle, but the feedback system to the driver. You pointed out guy that was in the back seat -- which required a multitude of over-rides (weight in the seat, device of the steering wheel to offer torque resistance, putting the car in FSD and changing the speed to 0, moving out of the driver's seat w/o opening a door, etc.). So, while you may be "concerned with driver safety", you neglected to mention to drive without being in the driver’s seat was a feat not easily accomplished. Edmund's usual bias and misinformation, two thumbs down to Edmunds. I will not be asking for an offer to buy any of my cars.
It's massively overpriced for level 2 tech, the promise of future level 5 is a pipe dream and a scam and anyone who pays for Autopilot is a dang fool; as for Tesla I hope they get taken to court for their scam and face serious ramifications for blatant false advertising and putting people in danger by saying their tech does things it won't.
You do not need to pull over to do MCU restart. All driving and safety functions, even autopilot are functional while rebooting. I have to do it only once or twice a year so far for my Model 3.
You can reset the Tesla while driving and it's not going to mess up it's going to continue to drive if you have it on autopilot it's going to continue to drive you can even switch lanes when you reset the Tesla I've done it many times
Nice update! I think the model Y is still an enthusiast car... Not quite fully ironed out, the technology is impressive though and setting standards. The panel gap issue to me is a big deal breaker... And calling level 2 driver assistance auto pilot is a huge stretch... Tesla should be more transparent about it so people stop taking crazy risks pretending their cars are fully autonomous...
I traded a BMW with perfect panel gaps for the Tesla and will never look back. The Tesla can be driven hard every day with no maintenance and near bulletproof reliability. That cannot be said for the BMW which, even with beautiful fit and finish, sits at the dealership constantly for warranty work.
I think there should be criminal ramifications for Tesla selling autopilot the way they do, it is a sleazy scam full stop. The cars I want to succeed, there are lots I like about them, they are in the lead on powertrain tech in so many ways, but the quality is really off-putting and I am not one of these "tech" people who wants everything to be like a smartphone...I want my cars to be cars.
I enjoy my long range Y very much. Since I consider it a driver's car--performance and handling--I'm not interested at all in self driving as I want to do it myself (note: retired w/no commute). I did change the wheels (narrower by 1/2") and tires (wider/275) for looks, a bit of extra height, and rim protection. The stiff ride is fine, but less tire/impact/road noise would be better. And I too have a Cybertruck deposit waiting for fruition.
So I admittedly have never had his issues with my Model 3. But most of these "issues" are pretty well known before you buy, you get the Performance wheels for the looks not the ride. You can't call it a "Family" car when you paid to soup it up. I got the Dual Motor because the look of more expensive wheels wasn't worth it to me. I did pay the 3K for self driving because that will be. Also treating anything about FSD as promises seems disingenuous to me or worrying about other drivers using a feature improperly seems irrelevant. I think the screen blackout has happened to me once total but perhaps dozens of novice drivers makes that happen more often.
So all the complaints are options you don't have to get or extra features other cars don't have. You don't have to get autopilot (the base auto assist features are better than pretty much any other cars) and don't get 21 inch wheels.
Consider every 3 hours (210 miles) or so i pull over to stretch by bad knees and a bio break which takes about 20 minutes. Add a Dog and or kids and that's 30 minutes. That's enough charge time to get you to the next supercharger. Daily driving is not a problem since most people charge at home or office.
Agreed. I don't have that issue. I was at first but now I'm pretty familiar with how I want to charge and all. You'll stay away from those two once you become a true EV car owner.
Can you still drive safely with the screen blank or does power steering and other controls lose power? If it goes blank while the ac or heater is on, do either of those climate accessories stop?
Honestly, we were about to get one but are now having second thoughts kinda cause you legit cannot see the back window cause it’s soo tiny if somebody is sitting in the middle u cannot see the back window... that’s how small it is but overall it’s a good car
You don't need to pull over to reset the screen. Actually, pressing the brake does nothing. While you are still driving, you just press and hold the scroll wheels. You don't even need to pull over. If you can work the accelerator, brake, steering wheel...you can continue driving normally while resetting the screen.
@@jonathansage2147 not to be rude, but check your manual. That is not in there. Holding the brake while pressing the scroll wheels was something the community made up. It is no where in the manual, nor has Tesla ever stated to do this. Several service techs have said that the brake does not do anything.
@@BassPlayerUnderGrace That's fair, and no rudeness taken. I didn't realize this had changed. I have one MCU1 and one MCU2 Model X. The MCU1 car does have different reboot behavior based on brake/no brake. All MCU2 cars have as you say, the brake pedal makes no difference. I learned a thing, thank you :).
@@BassPlayerUnderGrace Also, apparently users have reported a longer restart time even on MCU2 cars when pressing the brake. They've also been told to do so by Tesla techs. I haven't independently verified this, but now I'm deeply curious if it's true haha. That said, you're absolutely right, it isn't in the manual.
Only gripe I have about the review is you get 21” wheels abs complain about ride quality. 21” wheels basically have no sidewalk. But of course u guys know that since you only review 1000 cars a year.
I don't know about you but I am extremely cautious in anything I'm driving not to damage the rims. As far as things rattling and parts falling off the car goes,.that would frustrate the hell out of me. You don't expect your 70k car to rattle and lose parts. I've been in cars that cost half that with 100k miles that didn't have that problem. The sad thing is I hear many stories like this and they really keep me from pulling the trigger and buying one. It's sad, I love the look of the vehicle, definitely the performance, but it has to be reliable and durable which is something that Tesla seems to have a problem with.
21 inch wheels are good for styling, but bad for ride quality and longevity. They can also be damaged easily on most of these pot hole filled roadways.
so true. We had an Audi A4 when we lived in Chicago and honestly, we had flat tires three or four times a year just from regular city driving. Low profile tires look awesome, but they aren't practical.
MY LR owner. Agreed with almost everything except that I love Autopilot and it is working quite well, not sure what's wrong with your MY, and the screen reboot, perhaps your MY P has some issues. Btw, I have the 19" wheel and it's not too bad but I can see the bumping on 21" wheels.
I have a Mach E, it’s super quiet on the highway and usually goes further than what the battery range states. I didn’t go Tesla mostly because it seems that after their warranty expires, it’s going get expensive quickly
Look at a Mustng Mach-E first?? There are so many things that would drive me crazy about a MachE. I think the Mach E is the best non-Tesla EV available, but the technology, usability, and performance are nowhere close. This video highlights some of these annoyances: ua-cam.com/video/VNgszln_Gjg/v-deo.html
Yeah the annoyance Kyle from out of spec motoring had while charging with the Mach E is a total deal breaker for me. I can't imagine. Having multiple charging faults literally every time you try to charge would piss me off.
so don't get the 21' wheels or FSD. I would have told you that without the full year review... lol. The ford UI looks confusing AF, and the range isn't great either... also, how often they will keep it updated is HIGHLY questionable. My M3 gets updates like every other month, or more.
If you want a "family SUV" , than buy the long range version and go for 19'' wheels save money on the purchase and tyre replacement costs and stop whining.
I mean, if you intentionally buckle the seatbelt behind your back before you start driving for the sake of being able to trick the system, safety really isn't high on your agenda.
There are always ways to fool a system. There was a motorcyclist here in LA who recently killed himself with an Instagram stunt. He put the bike in cruise control at 75mph on the highway, then stood on top of the bike and looked at his phone. This worked once -- his buds got the pics -- but the second time he tried it he crashed and died. I mean, how can you stop people from doing incredibly dumb things?! Everyone knows that you need to be in the driver's seat of your car or the seat of your motorcycle.
As far as quick EV SUVs go, would you rather have a Model Y or a Mustang Mach-E? Read our long-term test edmu.in/3pW4tnn
Model Y because of the display and the better Software.
Model Y because it looks much better, even with the uneven panel gaps. But my neighborhood is full of Tesla’s... Maybe an Audi e-tron...
Definitely Tesla over ford unless is a gt of course 🤣
I own a model 3 for one year now, Carlos’ opinions are 100% fact, But the car is unlike any other vehicle on the road and I love it and can’t wait for my model Y next.
Exactly. It's not perfect, but it ALWAYS puts on a smile on my face, every single time I drive it.
I agree, all his point are accurate. I have had my Y for 5 months now and my biggest complaint is the poor ride quality. It is starting to really bother me and I have the Long range, 20" wheels and even still ride quality is not great.
TESLA have ugly style cars. I wouldn't buy one in my opinion
@@jesusazuela8913 I bought mine BECAUSE of the looks.
@@fmtforme upgrade the suspension. Ryan Shaw did it for his Y and raves about the improvement.
You don't have to pull over, you can do the power cycle while driving it.
They can't say that in front of lawyers... they might get sued if the power cycle 'causes' an accident. Thanks for saying that though I'm about to get a model y hopefully

you can't hard power cycle while driving since you need to press the break too
@@te86a You dont have to do a "hard power cycle" to reset it. Simply wrong guide by Edmunds, who is always negative biased towards Tesla.
Every small or non-negative things get exaggerated.
1) Just see the video how they negatively mention the nice wheels (!!?) - but its ok on the corvette (??).
2) And several times mention the black screen (althoug common on all new cars, and you DONT have to stop - but kan keep going,
3) AND they mention that Tesla say you should only charge to 90%, so range is even less (come on now).
HOLY SHIT an honest Tesla review
A Ford ads actually

That is all consistent with Musk. Over promise under deliver.
One of the best reviews ever - if not just for the honesty and light hearted-layman style of reporting. Awesome job, Carlos!
No need to pull over. Just hold in your thumbs to reboot. If you need to do it frequently please open a support ticket in your app.
No car like a Tesla. The rest seem a little “dumb”.
You can reset the screen by pressing the 2 wheel buttons without pulling over and pressing brakes.
...and then you lose your speedometer for a good two minutes while driving down the freeway, with no idea if your turn signals are working without looking for your reflection in the car in front of you.
I can live without turn signals and speedo
@@supraphonic88 The error they had is that the screen showed nothing so you wouldn't even see speedometer anyway before rebooting.
Woah, 30 - 40% less? That surprises me tbh.
Love long term reviews
Hate the wheel and tires but you are being a bit critical of ride quality. What do you expect from 21” wheels and low profile tires?
If its being compared to a Corvette(sports car) and it still is harsher. Its a luxury SUV so that should have been taken into consideration at the design phase. You can get an Escalade with that size wheels and it probably rides better. I think the issue here is as it compares to other brands it the same class

I can attest, we picked up VIN 26028 on July 28th 2020, after the initial SC visit on Aug 5th to correct a few issues we identified at delivery our Y has been PERFECT. Granted due COVID and my retirement I’m not driving as much as usual, but currently I sit at 52xx miles with an average wh/mi consumption of 254 wh/mi. Aside from PPF and a lot of the usual accessories Tesla owners buy I sprung for the Performance Boost Upgrade. It chopped my 0 to 60 from 4.8 to 4.1 seconds. I’m waiting for the EAP upgrade. I’m 69 and love driving again, thanks Elon and Tesla, I’m a kid again.
God thats how a car should be reviewed…honest, quirky and informative for future customers that can save tons of dollars!
Good to hear there’s availability of other networks, my only other question is have you done a road trip?
legit checked out after you went GD and my kid was listening was 100% not necessary.
This is what I’m considering.
It seems that half of the negatives go away by skipping the performance option and full self driving option.

Also, they should report this to service. Tesla would fix it.
Have my y for 6 months not once. Maybe it’s something they fixed in the later versions🤷♂️
Good job!! Great review and after 6 months and 12 000 kms I agree with everything you say but luckily for me 0 screen problem!
Wow we knew they accelerate quickly but gapping a gt500 or even a trackhawk is extremely impressive for a crossover SUV
It’s not old school. Physical controls are simply safer.
See this...

Yes the windshield wipers auto turn on and off by themselves, but when the driver wanted to adjust the wiper speed during what was obviously not perfect weather (it was raining after all) the driver had to dig down a list of menus on that screen and got in a wreck.
@@savedfaves Please provide evidence. Thanks.
To people who hates Telsa, "If you don't own a Tesla, you are missing out".
Open Recalls -- do you ever cover recalls in other long term cars you cover?
When I get my Tesla I just won’t pay for those extra features lol
1 year is a shot term review as most people keep a car over 7 years. You need to give us a update in year 8
Look at a Mach E first. Then look at a Model Y to see what all the Mach E is missing. They are having their share of issues on the MachE forums.
Yeah that part felt a bit weird. Drive a Gen1 EV first because this Gen4 EV has some lingering issues.
What about the charging infrastructure? Is Ford's on par with Tesla? Will adaptors fill the gap? I can't believe they are not standardized.
First, you should not have bought a Performance Y. You spent over half your review on issues that would be greatly mitigated on a LRMY without FSD. You should at least make that clear. I did not find this review helpful at all.
So they basically they cost a good bit and have terrible fit and finish?
Great review.
Hey Carlos, great videos
🙌
A very honest review. I just put my order in.
Excelente video seguir asi.

Tesla w/ Autopilot (if you trust it) can be a really good Daily Driver
FSD works.
hopefully, with the new AMD upgrade, that screen issue will no longer be an issue.
You can reset the screen while driving. Don't need to pull over.....
Yes, but I kinda want a speedometer when I drive so I'll choose to pullover.
The spacing on the hood really bothers me, so inconsistent. Tesla needs to get their QA under control, especially for the price.
The ones that praise the self driving are the ones with low standards or the ones that wont tell how many times it actually doesnt work
Autopilot it is kind of useless at this point.
Not if you do a lot of highway driving
@@odisy64 Right, you are right about that.
@@Trendyflute how old are you? you seem to have never bought beta software before.
You can reset while driving. The drive unit is a separate computer
Yeah, I tried that. It drives fine while the screen boots up.
What’s more incredible about that kill list is that the Y is actually the slowest of all the Performance model Tesla’s!
So all the complaints are options you don't have to get or extra features other cars don't have. You don't have to get autopilot (the base auto assist features are better than pretty much any other cars) and don't get 21 inch wheels.
Thank you for a very realistic review. Not driven by fanaticism
Waiting to fully charge and range anxiety is the bad part
That's pretty true of a lot of vehicles these days.
12:00 Not accurate, you can restart while driving, don't need to pull over unless you are relying on map for navigating
You don't need to pull over to reset the screen. Actually, pressing the brake does nothing. While you are still driving, you just press and hold the scroll wheels. You don't even need to pull over. If you can work the accelerator, brake, steering wheel...you can continue driving normally while resetting the screen.
Pressing and holding the brake while restarting does a hard restart of all systems. It is not the same. Check your manual.
That’s sooo cool! You guys drive around the sylmar area love it!!!! 😀
Is Model Y Long range softer than the performance in its suspensions ?
You don’t have to pull over to reboot the infotainment system. I have done it plenty of times while driving..
On the Autobahn, just follow a truck and press both buttons. Last i had to do this was in January 2020.
Honest, informative!
1 year is definitely not even close to long term, but still a good review.
Don’t forget that most problems or faults come up in the first year of ownership.
Dam....kinda concern about getting my Cybertruck after seeing this.......but too late, I'm already decided on the CT
How did the fog light go in?
Agree look at a Mach E first.
Yah and deal with different kind of annoying problems. Take your pick, I guess.
Enjoy the charging stations…if they work
I have a Mach E, it’s super quiet on the highway and usually goes further than what the battery range states. I didn’t go Tesla mostly because it seems that after their warranty expires, it’s going get expensive quickly
then quickly walk away
Look at a Mustng Mach-E first?? There are so many things that would drive me crazy about a MachE. I think the Mach E is the best non-Tesla EV available, but the technology, usability, and performance are nowhere close. This video highlights some of these annoyances: ua-cam.com/video/VNgszln_Gjg/v-deo.html
The lack of a decent charging network and less range than the Y are easy deal breakers IMO
Yea pretty much living on hype through fanatics, just like apple. But good on them they at least deliver something.
If you want a "family SUV" , than buy the long range version and go for 19'' wheels save money on the purchase and tyre replacement costs and stop whining.
Don’t buy first year products if you want fewer issues.
It’s baffling to me that the car would even drive without somebody in the driver seat. Surely it knows when there is an occupant or not.
Thats why it requires hands on the wheel and the seatbelt buckled in. If you trick those systems thats on the person trying to bypass safety features.
