This Jamaican Quiz Show Is About More than College Scholarships (HBO)

- Imagine a spelling bee, but with questions about math, Bible verses, and Jamaican proverbs. Now, imagine that everyone in the entire country is watching you.
Even that doesn’t quite do “School’s Challenge Quiz” justice, but it’s a start.
SCQ is the longest running TV show in Jamaica, and people take it very seriously: a few years back, a scoring dispute between two schools went all the way up to the Supreme Court.
For the spectators, it’s all about bragging rights. This year, hundreds of people showed up outside the studio wearing the school colors of their alma mater, as legendary boys’ high school Kingston College and cross-town underdogs St Jago High faced off in the finals.
The students also want to make their classmates, and alumni, proud. But a win is also a chance at a scholarship - and for some, it could be a rare opportunity to attend college.
VICE News went to Kingston to watch students from both schools prepare - and see just how heated the real competition gets.

Much respect to all those young jamaican ambassadors, you make your country and the rest of humanity proud
Big up Man
such a nice thing to say. Thanks on their behalf! :)
Instablaster.
This is one kinda reality show I can totally back and support !! Love the idea!!
sadly in india we have singing and dancing shows which airs every weekend like 12 months a year in every tv channels . No offence to singing and dancing talents but when I was a kid in early 2000s these shows were only aired during summer vacations from MAY to JULY . Now it has become bussiness not talent shows. 12 months of child labour. Just think how much these kids miss in school and the sad thing is their parents are not understanding.
love this feature. wish it was longer
same! There was so much else to say, but VNT is a 30-minute show so we gotta make room for everything else! But hopefully this inspires people to check out the show on their own next time around.
It feels good to see My school Featured on Vice News
St Jago 275 Strong
Finally showing more of the good sides to Jamaica this is so important we need more of this
Now this is vice worthy.
It's about fuckin time
-I guess you just want to hear about crime and war and desperate poverty. Well, for me, this warms my heart , and makes me very proud. And I say congratulations Vice. You have done something wonderful Great job
TheHornet79 🐍your a hater 🤣👉Jamaican & Proud 🇯🇲👊
"Rare chance to go to college"? Nah. SCQ is mainly about bragging rights for schools. Students don't do SCQ to get to go to university. Just because we are a relatively poor country doesn't mean that everything about us has to be viewed through the lens of poverty and hardship.
The college scholarships are just one of many prizes. The bragging rights is the whole reason for this competition. The quiz is not part of the entry requirement for university
So happpy St. Jago won, those KC kids are going to college regardless
Exactly because there old boys association will ensure that there college tuition is fully paid
"St. Jago saved us from KC bragging all year long"

hahahahaha I had so many people telling me that!
I am so proud of the St Jago team, I can attest that good things are in your future with the launch you get from St Jago.

I like when you guys travel to other countries and capture what life but another country is actually like.
it helps to break certain stereotypes.
For example most people have the wrong idea of what an Authentic Jamaican Accent Sounds like but vids like this show people how Jamaicans actually talk and communicate
Aldane Stennett 🤦🏾♂️😂, so that's what you got outta the video? A Yardie accent?🤷🏾♂️

Agreed

Awesome segment. I have a few relatives who attended Kingston College. These kids are brilliant. Don't take your opportunities for granted.
Same, my uncle went there.
My dad went to Kingston college
Jamaican young men, and young ladies, are smart, intelligent, and collegial. Much success!
all that pretty african melanin is poppin'
Wakanda Jamaicans are intelligent. Boys and girls are more than numbers. I continue to hope education will improve.
Wakanda You’re in another country-look out for your own country!
I hope many invest in Jamaica, and their own country.
that is 100% false.
@Wakanda look at you lol taking and looking off some article online , man shut up and worry about our own country . bet you go on every Jamaican video to write crap , get a life fam
They didn’t show it but there is a schools challenge quiz for prep and primary schools (younger ones) and trust me it is just as competitive
That's my favorite one, they show it twice a day during the week in my parish.
not as popular
I loved this show so much as a child! Great to see Vice featuring this.
Up up up to ALL the youth men and women...!

Ohh thank you for highlighting This! Quiz season is definitely one of the most anticipated seasons on local tv

Love stories like these. Very inspiring.
Wow, so inspiring and positive.
congrats kiddos! may your minds take you where your heart wants to go.
It’s always good to see the talent in Jamaica 🇯🇲.
I hope even the loosing team can get some partial scholarships to UWI or UTech
boxertest no, they’re already in college?
yes, they do. Each of the finalist teams get one full scholarship to any university or college in Jamaica. Additionally, each of the members of both teams get money from corporate sponsors.
@@MrMundo3d They're in High School. For the really strong teams, you'll find that most of the members are older; 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th grades.

These kids are awesome! Wish them all the best!! ❤️❤️
What an interesting story! VICE News is awesome!
Who else hears "Hey Arnold!"; everytime the reporter is on screen😂
I'm glad that school challenge quiz got a fantastic international spotlight. It's tradition to huddle 'round the tv to watch it just before prime time news lol. Fun times. Wish the students great success.
I go to st jago high it was a massive celebration.Thank you so much for doing this.

I love this! Took something I had no idea about and turned it into a compelling watch. Shout out to vice news for this!

Big up mi island JAMAICA!
why dont they have this in America? this was surprisingly fun and intense to watch especially for school stuff.
bequeef queefs it’s a show in Chicago called know your heritage. It’s very similar to this.
That would be very expensive. Jamaica is a little place with roughly 64 high schools
@@professorrosenstock5026 64 in the piece represents the number of participants in SCQ not the number of high schools in total on the island. 🇯🇲
@@suzettedixon7740 Of course but still Jamaica is a lot smaller than the US so it's easier to have things like this.
@@professorrosenstock5026 I was merely correcting your statement about the number of schools on the island. I think that such a competition could be replicated although, understandably, it would be a huge undertaking.
Bigup to my country Jamaica. If you do some checks you will realize that there are a lot of bright Jamaicans are in high positions across the world especially USA and UK. Proud Jamaican!
no doubt! I found out about SCQ after hearing about it in an interview with a famous Jamaican person - he'd been on the show when he was in high school. That's what inspired this segment!
@@dexdigi Awesome. Keep up the good work.
BIG UP JAMAICA long live south side garrison of kingston jamaica raa raa raa!

jamaica has grit
We have something similar to this in the States but it's not nearly this prestigious. It's pretty cool to see that.
Are you talking about the National Geographic Bee?
Granted it's not on Prime time but it's pretty prestigious.
@@jackiechan_wtf4041 once it's not making America money it won't be prestigious and in prime time that's all this country about MONEY.
My uncle and cousins went to Kingston College. I love that school with all my heart for what it has done for them. I was in shock when I heard they get scholarships for the Schools Challenge quiz. While KC didn't win I'm happy for St Jago.
Now That's wa gwan Si mi I say! big up Yard!
Thanks for the hard hitting news vice good job
I remember being on School Challenge Quiz in 2001. It was one of the most exhilarating moments of my life. Big up Knox Community College
LOL at "cross-town underdogs St Jago High" 😂😂😂 Did a kingston college old boy help you put together this description?
Enjoyed , thanks !
Wow never expected to see School Challenge Quiz on Vice
precisely why we made this!
Do the flow up St. JAGO HAS NEVER BERN AN UNDERDOG..ANYWAY TITLE WAS JUST RETAINED YET AGAIN BY THE STALWARYS OF Monk Street excellence since 1744
these kids are so bright!💕🇯🇲
Just love when the underdog wins! Respect.
I was rooting for Kingston College though, being it's the 50th anniversary and KC's 50th year of participation
I was rooting for KC too. I wanted them to create history
Congrats to all the kids. I hope that they do well in life.

Yup now would be a good time especially.since the so called underdogs have retained their title..over n over..anyway big up St. JAGO
Vice more of this and less of the normal garbage! Good luck to all! Hope they can go to college and have a better future!!
Can you imagine a feature film based on this? I'd watch the shit out of this.
Awesome!
good segment, but why they had to make jamaica look like a backward place by showing the students looking for a tv signal with an antenna? our country isnt as poor as you might imagine... oh
That's what the media does 🙄
Because that is the reality for many at least in that area of Jamaica. The sign is awful in some places.
For many Jamaicans that's a reality.
but they do that... no lost in pride is what we have , can't always show the tourist resorts and all that every time
Hi there! I was there with the KC boys when they were watching their classmates on the TV for the Champs track meet. They took time out of their grueling study schedule to support their schoolmates, using the TV that was available to them. I didn't see any reason to hide their pride in their school.
Let's go St Jagooooo!!!!
Love my jamdown
I like it when underdogs win.
I've never seen that kind of cheering for a quiz show
Fortis!
Nuh need fi say nuh more.
visiting the KC campus was amazing!
Jamaican kids from a young age already know a lot about Math, history and science.
@Wakanda Let people enjoy things.
@Wakanda i can sense a hint of rascism i have seen yours comment all over the youtube thread first of all jamaica education is based on that of england education system our education might not reach the american standard but is by far one the most superior in the english caribbbean i attend st jago if you dont anything positive say dont say and me have a augustine institution in jamaica hence our university degrees are internationally recgonized and canada an jamaica oftens trade students what were u about jamaica education system why one the great first world country u so worship wanna would want do something like that if our education system was lacking,
@Wakanda Look stop being a Troll and get a Life. These Kids in Jamaica are Brilliant not sheltered and spoiled. You obviously don't know what the hell you're talking about.
@Wakanda Stats show that You have an I.Q. of 50 points and need to get a life.
This quiz show reminds me of being on the Brain Bowl team in high school.
Big up vice... Fortis Forever!!
Blessings vice
This is decathlon but it’s also televised
The antenna part was so unnecessary. If they wanted they could have even watched it on one of the live streams the local news stations have.
The dorky Vice host guy LOL 😂
