Cinder Block Studios that's a great idea. I live in Idaho and my town began doing this. People will paint a rock and place it somewhere in the city. When someone finds it they can take a picture and hashtag it. It's fun to see how many people have seen your rock. They even have classes for little kids where they can learn art by painting their own rocks.
Hi, India is my country. And I used to do these paintings as a hobby as beautiful stones were easily available along the beaches of Andaman Island (PortBlair). But I am staying in the US as of now.
You can use any acrylic (water-based) or enamel (oil based) paints, but it pays not to mix the two as they are likely to react creating crazy and somewhat ugly results. If you're not experienced using (and cleaning up) enamel, I'd advise you to stick to nice cheap water-based acrylic paint. You'll find a great range of colours in cheap test-pots at your local house-paint store. Avoid 'poster' paint from craft stores ... it can be a bit cheap and nasty, and create a powdery and unstable result. Always be sure to allow your paint to dry COMPLETLY before applying a varnish over-coat ... if you're unsure, give your stone a full day in the sunlight. :D
Thank you, gathered mine and ready for the grand children this coming a school holiday. Dig out my paint and brushes, they will love it and being a really easy to wash off little fingers. Kai pai!
As an added measure to protect the artwork, I varnish (if using acrylic, use varnish meant for acrylics and if using oils, use varnish meant for oils) the whole stone after 72 hours of full drying.
Oh wow, that sucks! Both well-washed rover-rocks and beach-front rocks are great, we find, but since we're in NZ we have to be careful that we are allowed to collect them - many areas of these kinds are protected environments here.
All kinds of colors - it depends on the individual stone / artwork. If you meant to ask about the paints themselves, we have a video on that topic here -> ua-cam.com/video/jRF5kxAkDpI/v-deo.html
Heya - the paint used in this video are all test-pots of acrylic from our local Resene ColorShop. It's the type of internal-house-paint test-pot you'd get if you were looking into painting your kitchen cupboard doors, touching up the paint on a chair, etc .... very 'general' stuff, but most certainly not 'poster' paint as the craft-type paints get very powdery when they dry. Once it's *thoroughly* dry, i.e. a few days in the sunlight, any general clear-coat or varnish spray will protect it well. I hope this helps ;)
Robert NZ therres this giant 5m hole in the ground in my courtyard and theres plenty of rocks different sizes so no problem!ps this was sooooo awsome and satisfying :)
Yup, that's how it's done! Our "wandering stones" group has had our New Zealand painted stones show up in Australia, Ireland, England and the USA after several months of being moved around :D
Thank you for posting this video ! Reminds me colonel gaurav's gift to my daughter ! Just as she watched this she said , mama karnal mamu sent me these stones !!
Here's a whole video covering the topic -> ua-cam.com/video/jRF5kxAkDpI/v-deo.html .... spoiler alert, I used "Resene' brand acrylic interior house-paint ;) Any acrylic interior housepaint will be fine
The undercoat is the first solid layer of paint. Some surfaces don’t allow paint to stick very well, and require special undercoat products so that the paint-job is durable, but this is mostly relevant when you’re painting concrete of raw wood, and isn’t really the case with stones. The reason *we* apply an initial solid layer of paint (the undercoat) is to create a flawless and even foundation for the colours that go on later. Also, the colours that go on over the top of the overcoat will appear brighter, and you’ll get better coverage (the paint will go much further and look ‘solid’). If you don’t apply an undercoat, your colours can look uneven, dull, and may also show the uneven texture of the surface of the stone. The best advice I can give you is to experiment so that you can see the results for yourself - paint one stone red with no undercoat, then paint another with a solid coat of white paint (your undercoat) before letting it dry and applying a red overcoat. You’ll see the difference ;) I hope you find this helpful. ;)
Hi, sorry I did not get back to you sooner.... the undercoat is the same kind of paint as the rest - it is an acrylic interior house-paint, made by a NZ company called 'Resene'. Brand not-withstanding, almost any interior acrylic house pain should do a great job. Here's a video I made on choosing paint - ua-cam.com/video/jRF5kxAkDpI/v-deo.html Best of luck :D :D
Robert NZ I think what they are asking is "Is the undercoat a gesso type paint or do you just use an undercoat of white acrylic or oil, depending on what you will be using?"
Heya - Yep, the undercoat is just a solid layer of the same type of paint you select for the job... in this case, it's plain white acrylic, nothing special. Of course, if we'd decided to paint in enamel, it would be an undercoat of plain white enamel. When selecting paint, as always, I'd suggest 'craft' or 'poster paint' be avoided in favour of general domestic paint - the kind you'd buy for interior painting in your home. I hope this clarifies things a bit ;) :D
Thank you for this. Encourages me to have a go with some groups I do volunteer art sessions with. I also have a grief activity that calls for putting the stones in water. Do you reckon your undercoat/overcoat/varnish process would be enough of a seal, or is there some other product I should be getting?
If you're planning on submerging them, I'd give them two or three top-coats of clear varnish (top and bottom) to seal them completely. The drying between coats means it will take quite a while, but you'll have a durable finished product.
I am, RobertNZ, so I will try that. The paint has peeled off the first lot I did-but there was no sealer on them at all. Just paint. A discovery made! Thank you.
Hi Melinda, the undercoat is just acrylic interior house-paint, same as the coloured paints we use for the designs. The brand just happens to be RESENE, but any brand at all would serve as well. For more info on our paints, you can watch our follow-up video -> ua-cam.com/video/jRF5kxAkDpI/v-deo.html
Thank you for sharing this step-by-step! My husband and I live full-time in an RV in homeschool our son. You share our Journey on UA-cam and I, Zelda, wanted a new hobby that wouldn't take up too much space in our RV. I'm painting my first rock toady and I am very excited. I subscribed because I want to learn more about how to paint rocks for enjoyment.
We use acrylic interior house-paints. Your local paint store should be able to supply you with test-pots, which are just the right size for your crafts ;) For more paint info, see my follow-up video .... :D ua-cam.com/video/jRF5kxAkDpI/v-deo.html

Here's a video I made on choosing paint - ua-cam.com/video/jRF5kxAkDpI/v-deo.html - test-pots are great for artwork.
Kim Taehyoung of course, but I always suggest a base coat be applied to make the finished product brighter and more even. I find white produces the best results, even if I end up painting right over it ... But you could use any other color. I'd suggest experimenting and seeing what results you get 😁
Yes, we sure do .... you can spray a well-dried stone with clear-coat, or give it a nice thick layer of clear varnish. Be sure to give your stone a few days to dry fully, though, so the paint and the overcoat don't react.
It's called a Stephens "Vivid" marker, by Bic .... but I have to admit I don't know if these are available in all countries. What you need to ask for at your local stationery store is a "permanent pigment-ink marker" - my personal favourite is the "Sharpie Permanent Marker", if you want to google for that. ;)
Nope! Having said that, it's all about the quality of coverage of the paint you're using. I use interior house paints, and I've never primed before a base coat ;)

Great question! Creating and hiding these stones is a selfless act of kindness - it's like creating a spontaneous treasure-hunt for others. Imagine you were a child playing in a park, when you came across one of these stones - what is this? Where did it come from? Why is it here? The child will pick up the stone, show it to their family, talk about finding it, and then they will see the web address on the back. Looking this up, they will find that it was a treasure that has passed from person-to-person, moving about the country, and now it’s YOUR turn to hide this for someone new to find. (Go see bit.ly/nzstones to see the message)
Wandering Stones releases all of its stones in the North Island of New Zealand, yet through our FB groups, we know that our stones have traveled to England, Estonia, Canada, the USA (Central Park!) Fiji, Australia …. and I’d imagine even more places we have not heard of yet!
It’s a treasure hunt, a message in a bottle, and a selfless gift all-in-one. 😀 😀
Is that a marker or a paint pen you're using to mark the design over the pencil? I've used permanent Sharpies and they bleed when I spray over them. Thanks :-)
Sorry I did not reply quickly ... I seem to have missed your comment! The answer is YES it's a sharpie! If you're getting bleeding when you spray, try giving your stones an extra day or two to dry, or spray-coat them in very light layers with plenty of drying time in between. Best of luck!
Sometimes that's exactly what we do, depending on the level of coverage we need (where paint is better) or the level of detail in the design (markers are less clumsy)
Great question :D :D .... I'm glad you asked. Here's a video I made covering the topic --> ua-cam.com/video/jRF5kxAkDpI/v-deo.html .... spoiler alert, I used "Resene' brand acrylic interior house-paint ;) Any acrylic interior housepaint should be fine. Have fun!
Wow! Your rock looks cool - thanks for the 101! 😍 We painted some for the first time some weeks ago and hid them in Germany in the Harz. We also filmed a video about it, because we would love to inspire others with it, like you do. Painting the rocks makes so much fun, also hiding and finding some. 🎉
Hi I'm a new subscriber. Love the video. I want to paint a 2 inch turquoise gemstone with black paint to match a black painted turquoise bracelet and ring set I purchased online. Can I use this method? Thank you for any advice🙏🏼
We use acrylic interior house-paint - we get it in test-pots, as this is affordable, and we can use it up before it gets old and dries up ;) For more info on our paints, you can watch our follow-up video -> ua-cam.com/video/jRF5kxAkDpI/v-deo.html
The undercoat is interior house paint, from a brand available in New Zealand called Resene. You can see more info on our paint selections in this follow-up video -> ua-cam.com/video/jRF5kxAkDpI/v-deo.html
Thanks for your question ;) .... The colors are "White", obviously, and "Adrenaline" - however, these colour names are only any good to you if you have access to the Resene Interior Acrylic colour range, which I doubt you will unless you are in New Zealand or Australia.
Hi Savitha - I use acrylic interior house paint. Yes you *can* use any paint you want, but I'm sure that you'll appreciate that not every pain will give you the results you're expecting. I've made a video on the topic, so if you'd like to see it ... here it is! -> ua-cam.com/video/jRF5kxAkDpI/v-deo.html Please remember though, the BRAND of the paint means nothing (you can't even get the paint I use outside of New Zealand) ...but it's the TYPE of paint you want to pay attention to.
There should be some guidance to the products you use, for example what is the white thing you use first starting to paint, people who doesn't know how to paint has no idea about it
By gosh, I think you're right! That's why I made another video with all the guidance people might need about the products I use ... would you like to see it? It's right here .... -> ua-cam.com/video/jRF5kxAkDpI/v-deo.html
Why the fuck am I watching this at 4 am ?

I don't really put a under coat on it. I just wash the rock and do my work.

Robert NZ thanks a lot for making one!!!
Patrick would enjoy these rocks..

Very instructive. What is Undercoat?
You’ll see the difference ;)
I hope you find this helpful. ;)
Hi! Great video. What kind of undercoat paint did you use?
Hi, sorry I did not get back to you sooner.... the undercoat is the same kind of paint as the rest - it is an acrylic interior house-paint, made by a NZ company called 'Resene'. Hi Karen - I've just answered this for Diana. Hope this helps ;)

Thank you.

Why did you put the stone in your garden?
The answer to that question is on our community website - bit.ly/nzstones .... it's a bit like a treasure-hunt.
Marta Rodriguez Palomo a lot of people decorate their garden with painted rocks
I wonder what was used to seal it.

It's so awesome 💛love it but can we draw with out white colour?
Kim Taehyoung of course, but I always suggest a base coat be applied to make the finished product brighter and more even. I find white produces the best results, even if I end up painting right over it ... But you could use any other color. I'd suggest experimenting and seeing what results you get 😁
why do you only paint one side of the rock??
No particular reason.... you could paint both if you choose. ;)
I like to paint seashells
Oooh! Can we see any of your creations online?
Thank you this helped me soo much……. But I would like to know the paint brand name pls?
I like it so much but It will be better to but resin on it to make it bright and shiny ❤️❤️

Yes, we sure do .... you can spray a well-dried stone with clear-coat, or give it a nice thick layer of clear varnish. Be sure to give your stone a few days to dry fully, though, so the paint and the overcoat don't react.

Nope! Having said that, it's all about the quality of coverage of the paint you're using. I use interior house paints, and I've never primed before a base coat ;)
@@RobertNZ Thank you for the feedback 👍🏻
What kind of paint are you using?
(This is a copy-n-paste from the same question earlier in the thread)
.... Always be sure to allow your paint to dry COMPLETELY before applying a varnish over-coat ... if you're unsure, give your stone a full day in the sunlight. :D
Robert NZ Thank you! This is helpful to know :)

Wow! Your rock looks cool - thanks for the 101! 😍 We painted some for the first time some weeks ago and hid them in Germany in the Harz. We also filmed a video about it, because we would love to inspire others with it, like you do. Painting the rocks makes so much fun, also hiding and finding some. 🎉
You make it look so easy
That is what professionals do! Hehe.
try to use instrumental pop music for your background music 😀😀 eheheh just my suggestion

Wow!! Thanks for this quick tutorial. What sort of paint are you using in here? It's not in your description.
Thanks.
Should be acrylic 🌺
Painting stones totally alludes me.
What is the undercoat? Latex paint? Indoor or outdoor? What is the overcoat, etc.? Tutorial no good without info.
The undercoat is interior house paint, from a brand available in New Zealand called Resene. You can see more info on our paint selections in this follow-up video -> ua-cam.com/video/jRF5kxAkDpI/v-deo.html
Which paints are u using
diya Thareja
Brolo
It's looking like tiger stripes 🐅cool 👌which colour you are using ???
Thanks for your question ;) .... The colors are "White", obviously, and "Adrenaline" - however, these colour names are only any good to you if you have access to the Resene Interior Acrylic colour range, which I doubt you will unless you are in New Zealand or Australia.
What type of paint is tis can we use any type of paint or only tis
Thank you so much
the white thing is just white paint. no need to add special names
U can use acrylic paint or oil paint
