- Planting Orange Rocket Barberries🍊🚀 - In this video I plant a couple of 'Orange Rocket' Barberries from the Southern Living Plant Collection. These are great low maintenance upright growing Barberries with beautiful foliage that will brighten any garden space. These drought tolerant ornamental shrubs are best in full sun. Excellent container choice.

I have a ton of beautiful plants, shrubs, and maple trees. This is one of my absolute favorites in my garden. The color, hardiness, and ease of maintenance is off the charts.
I have these in my beds. Beautiful colors and easy to maintain. Have had no problems with them at all. Super showy!!!
👍. Thank for watching
they are very pretty
I saw some admiration bar berries at lowes 16.98-18.98 each very beautiful... I need about 8 of them though ouch..
Who the heck gave this video a thumbs down?
WTF people? It’s horticulture!! Who thumbs down horticulture for gosh sakes?!?!?!!!
Don’t mind me. I’m a Horti Groupie.
Thanks Jim!
Thanks, but I never worry about it I do wish they would leave a comment or message me. Maybe there is something I could improve or correct👍
just be careful. these are tick magnets so I would avoid if you have Lyme disease in your area.
Wish I could get these for my yard. NY has banned the sale of barberry that's not sterile.
This is a sterile cultivar. Problem is now that some of these plants are being improved and tamed it will be hard to reverse these rules.
Thanks for the info Jim. I’ll be looking for these next time I go shopping.
Hi Jim, I love your videos and appreciate all the great gardening info and design tips. I was so excited to get an Orange Rocket Barberry to add color to my garden, until I read online that it is invasive and the sale is banned in NY and CT. Even in a pot, they say the birds will spread the seeds. I live in Georgia. I know you care about the environment and our ecosystems. What are your thoughts about this? Thanx in advance.
i believe these are very invasive and prohibited in Maryland and Pennsylvania
Not Maryland
❓Mine are purple like these and haven’t changed to anything near orange, despite being in one 9b and that they are in direct sun for nearly 10 hours per day. I am confused. If anyone knows, please respond. I would really appreciate it.
Are these the same kind that attracts tics?
These are my favorite out of all of the Berberis. My job is to load plants on a special trailer connected to my Tractor and bring plant orders to the dock to have them loaded for shipping. I sometimes get poked walking through a row of Berberis Atropurpurea hahaha.
Is Orange Rocket the same as Proven Winners Orange Pillar
They are truly spectacular when seeing them in person. The orange/red with the chartreuse interior is incomparable. I’m in zone 9a and will make these a center piece of the new garden I’m developing. Hope they thrive!
I’m in Zone 8A when is the best time to plant these or other varieties of barberries?
instablaster
Spring or Fall
Really hesitant to give these a try in Florida Zone 9. I've heard nothing but negative reports....usually dead in a couple of weeks after planting. Maybe needs a bit more shade than sun in extremely warm areas??
Does a acid fertilizer good
Thanks Jim. Always enjoy your videos.
I planted 3 of these I got at Lowes 3-4 years ago. They are in the front bed facing SW (zone 6) so get lots of afternoon sun. They are 4.5 feet wide now and equally as tall. I thought they would grow in more of the rocket shape, but now, they are spreading. I pruned them back last summer when I was having a bay window installed in the front, so that the installer wouldn't get thorned And boy, they burst back. Beautiful, though. The mix of chartreuse and burnt orange is stunning.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌿🌳💚
One of my favorites along with Sunjoy Gold Pillar barberry. They really shine in the yard.
They really do. Thanks for watching.
How often should I water them in the summer time 90 degrees plus! I live in California
They are one of my favorites. Like you said, the video doesn't do them justice. They really pop in person.
Yes they do. Thanks for watching.
Jim, mid-June in NorCal mysterious nocturnal animal (large bird?) is pruning jasmine and nearby crab apple. The ends of the small branches appear to have been made with a blade-clean cuts all to an identical sharp angle. The ends are not chewed. The plants are getting smaller when they should be growing. What do you think? I enjoy your videos. Your knowledgeable, your presentation is charming with good production and you put out a lot. Keep it up.
yeah it looks cool, but it pricked me once too much so it had to go. inside wood was super bright yellow
I love the look of these. Planted a handful of them in my front yard (east facing). Despite regular watering and rain while allowing them to dry just a bit between waterings they still dried out. 😞
Just saw this beautiful creation live last week for the first time…❤❤❤
I started to buy a ton of barberries but I have two small kids so I decided we didn’t need the thorns right now :( I almost regret it
I can't find these beauties at any of my local nurseries. Who would you recommend buying from online?? Thanks for the wonderf videos!!!
have been growing barberries for decades. now I'm reading they attract ticks, and should not be planted anytime, anywhere. wtf man???!!! pardon my french....this is extremely distressing.
Yea I wanted red 😒 bushes and I loved this but I have dogs so don't want ticks
I'm, very impatiently, waiting for them to arrive at my local nurseries. Can't wait to get some in my landscape!
I just noticed the tree stump behind you.
Great video with this shrubs..def going to get one
Can this plant be propagated?
are they deciduous?
These are such beautiful shrubs as well as the Ms Lemon
Sources I read online state that the new growth on these particular barbarries is bright read/coral but then matures to green. Have you experienced the color of these throughout spring, summer and fall? Do they turn green at some point in the summer season? Thanks.
I'm in zone 6 BTW.
The bottom and inside of the foliage turns a bright green, contrasted by the dark read leaves on top, it looks stunning
Hi I a new home owner, I am going to order 3 of these and 3 Sunshine ligustrum for my front walk way, would it be a problem I I use white pebbles or do I have to use Mulch or put them in pots.
Thanks great videos
In the ground with pebbles is ok. In the ground with mulch is better over time, because the mulch breaks down and becomes compost.
@@JimPutnam thanks
Are they good for zone 8? I live in northeast Louisiana.
Definitely.
I have one I planted last fall because of your first video of them. Thank you, they are beautiful.
Glad to hear it. Thanks for watching
Found my next plant. Thank you !!
They are they are dying on me what to do thank you
Not enough direct sun.
👋😀
Pretty
Man I need a few of these in my yard. Going out to find out where now!! Awesome.
It a great plant. I have grown 1000's of Barberries in my life, but was never really all that excited about them. This variety really changes that.
I recently purchased 4 large container size ($18 each) Southern Living Orange Rocket Barberry plants from a nursery in GA. A few days after purchasing the plants and putting them in the ground I noticed the leaves appeared to be drying up; I planted the plants in the ground with miracle grow in ground soil. The day after planting I noticed ALL of the leaves on ALL 4 of the plants were withered and dried up and I was mortified. I could not believe those beautiful plants had changed to appearing dead after just a few days. I contacted the Nursery as I was concerned about the soil the plants were initially in and was told to water but not over water and all of the other barberries at the nursery still looked good basically not their problem is the gist of it. So I continued to monitor the plants closely and do a multitude a google searches regarding the plants. I read that orange rocket barberry are known to loose their leaves after being transplanted but mine began to shrivel up and look dead before being transplanted in the ground. I want to know when/if the beautiful original color of the leaves will ever come back or if I just wasted $80 on some plants that were already diseased and dying?
They should leaf right back out. I know it started before you planted them, but don't use that miracle grow planting soil. Awful for our soils
@@JimPutnam HELLO, Thank you sooo much for your reply! Should I dig them up and remove the miracle grow soil? I also noticed in your video that you said not to cover the "bulb"(?) do you mean do not put any soil on top of the plant....leave completely exposed?
I would make sure that you see the top of the root ball. Digging that stuff out is less important than raising them up some
@@JimPutnam Okay I will make sure the root ball in uncovered. I also read to surround plants with hardwood mulch...to retain moisture and the plants do not require much watering...is that true?
I’m glad you asked this question! I bought 7 for my front bed and before I can even put them in the ground, one is half dried up. They all receive the same amount of sun and water. So frustrating. I’m trying to figure out what to do to bring it back. I’m going to plant with soil and cotton burr, so I hope that helps.
Are they evergreen,zone 7 ?
No, it's not evergreen.
Do these have thorns?
Oh, I should have waited until the video ended. He answered my question.
Love these! Gonna try in containers
Awesome. Good luck with them.
I don’t have luck with these plant in zone 9b they just dry out and die back
Yeah, you are probably better off using a Dwarf Loropetalum.
HortTube with Jim Putnam I don’t like that many nurseries classified them being able to handle full sun in zone 9 ....
It's actually not anyones fault. It's sometimes a problem with the zone map. The zone map is only about how cold it gets. Zone 9 Texas is super hot, but zone California coast is not. But they may have similar winter lows. It's just a problem of incomplete information really. We should be using the heat map as well.
HortTube with Jim Putnam interesting ! I did not know that! You definitely change the way I buy plants online... thanks!
I have these in Zone 9B (Sacramento, CA) and they are healthy and happy. They loose all their foliage in the winter, but come spring and summer, I am all the envy of the neighborhood.
Do these keep their foliage in the winter?
No, they are deciduous.
@@JimPutnam Thank you! Do you happen to know any nice evergreen options with similar red foliage for zone 6?
wow beautiful plant in container thanks love your videos
Thank you👍
