Yes agree, Yamaha has taken the innovative PX5S' highly mobile synth/stage piano concept to a higher level. Basically a Montage in a 30# case = nice. Plus it has a good price point which we bring in more sales for the budget bedroom studio folks......who will then complain away at lack of features....haha

Yeah man, honestly I went and demo'd one based on this video and ended up getting the 88 key after hearing it person. 95% of the sound fo the montage for 50% of the price seems pretty great to me! I am going to make patch libraries for it and then buy a montage after I make it rain looool! Thanks for the great video and well recorded sound. Even the official demo's can't do that half the time! I needed to pay off some other equipment this year first, but now this keyboard (MODX7) is being shipped to me today! This is one of the better demo videos on UA-cam.
Texaco “Synth machinists” is the appropriate term for all those knob twiddlers and wannabe horror movie score composers. I prefer real musicians. This does *not* mean that one should play a synth like a piano or organ. Making extensive use of modulation *in a musical context* is the deal!
Update: I purchased the MODX-7 after listening to the first track several times each day for over 3 days and also did my thorough research (over 9 days at around 5 hours a day). It is the marriage of your: selection of instruments, rhythmic accompaniment, performance, phrasing and overall composition that I realized that indeed the MODX is for my style of writing. This has to be one of the greatest moments for the MODX - full stop. It does not matter the number of LOFs nor oscillators, ultimately it is the sound quality that rules. Have you completed that composition from the opening video?

If you like analog check out Phat Analog library I, II and III. The "classic poly" sound in the demo is from the Phat Analog III library. You can also auto sample your old analog synths with "Sample Robot" and turn them into Montage/MODX format.

I havn't played a MODX, but I own the previous model MOXF 6. I guess the keyboards are quite the same and there is not any problem with quality or playability...
Modx8 has piano style keys. For playing Hold the line by toto i use a second keyboard connected thru midi because it is too hard to play fast and precise chords on the Modx8

Where did Yamaha cut corners on this one to make it affordable? The key bed on Montage 8 is awesome, I'm guessing the MODX has a cheaper MOXF keybed. Does anyone know?
G Keybed as you said, plastic case instead of aluminum, less knobs/faders. No panel buttons on the right hand side, 1 Gb flashrom, different converters and 192 notes of polyphony instead of 256. Still sounds good though.

Hi! I think you will have to try it out yourself as keybed is not only a matter of quality, but also personal tast. I prefer the Montage 8 keybed but I would say MODX8 keybed is still very good. MODX8 keybed is based on the Graded Hammer technology (GHS), which means it the lower keys are heavier and as you move up on the keyboard the keys gets lighter. This is how a real piano/grand piano action works. On the Montage 8 the keys are quiter and feels better, but it is a Balance Hammer Action - same weight all over the keyboard. It also features after touch. If you are used to piano action maybe you will like the MODX8 even better. It is really good for the price. Try both :)

Interesting to note, though, that the Montage has a balanced action - in that regard it's worth than the MODX for pianists, as you imply. Thanks again.
duketranslucent3rd no the Yamaha Montage does not have the same Keybed all over the piano although it’s Keybed is crazy good but it is heavier on the low end and it gets lighter like a real acoustic piano and it’s beast the MOXF has a waaaaayyy better Keybed then the MODX hands down go check for yourself.
The only big problem with this Synth is the Keys quality and no after touch. Compared to Montage, Genos, Tyros and even Korg PA3X,PA4X so far appart but looking at the cost I can see why. It sounds great and same as Montage but not in build quality and a few missing features.

Not sure, but after a search and edit, I found "FM PWM Pad" of which I was able to come up with something really close to that sound using the Super Knob. This machine is ridiculously lol...nice
Hi DocTheopolis! I just checked. I think it is actually the preset patch called ”PWM strings” that we filtered down using the cut-off knob. I think we called it PWM pad because it sounds more like a pad when you filter it. Happy you like the machine 😃👌🏻
Do you have a link to the sheet for the sample that you play @ 2:08 - 2:42? The CFX + FM EP 2 is a great voice. Are you using the super knob to slide from one layer to the other? My MOX8 sure can’t do that. Great playing btw.
Doug Coates unfortunately not, but it is a preset so you should be able to find it by searching for CFX. The superknob should work by default. Best wishes!

I am very interested in buying this keyboard, but I have a friend who bought it and then sold it. He talks a lot, but he talks very badly about this keyboard. This keyboard can't sound that bad. Marcelo Neto Berland Hey! No it is just straight into a daw via good preamps of Apollo Twin. I think maybe we added 1-2 db treble to the CFX +FM. Thats it. The board sounds really good. Best in the price range according to me. I think you should try it out and judge yourself. Best and good luck!
Jose Montage is the better one even though Modx is great too. Montage features aluminum chassi instead of plastic, more dynamic sound, more hardware controllers (buttons, faders, knobs) better AD/DA converters, better keyboard inc aftertouch, bigger flash memory for loading new sounds and better remote function for daws like Cubase and more in/outputs.
Bobby kay they’re the same sound it’s just more dynamic on the Montage you may not hear a difference at all but once you play you will feel a different with the Keybed because that also affects how you process the sound through your ears
Dear PAGmusic, can you please share with me how you made the preset at 2:13? I can’t get this smooth DX7 sound from the factory preset. Sounds very different and inferior to yours. Thanks a lot in advance.

Yeah comparing the price to the Montage, Genos,Tyros 5 is super affordable but you dont get good quality keys and no aftertouch.

I've been pretty impressed by how analog it sounds using the raw synth waveforms, filters and chorus/stereophonic optimizer effects.

Hi DocTheopolis! I just checked. I think it is actually the preset patch called ”PWM strings” that we filtered down using the cut-off knob. I think we called it PWM pad because it sounds more like a pad when you filter it. Happy you like the machine 😃👌🏻

Do you have a link to the sheet for the sample that you play @ 2:08 - 2:42? The CFX + FM EP 2 is a great voice. Are you using the super knob to slide from one layer to the other? My MOX8 sure can’t do that. Great playing btw.
Doug Coates unfortunately not, but it is a preset so you should be able to find it by searching for CFX. The superknob should work by default. Best wishes!

I am very interested in buying this keyboard, but I have a friend who bought it and then sold it. He talks a lot, but he talks very badly about this keyboard. This keyboard can't sound that bad. No it is just straight into a daw via good preamps of Apollo Twin. I think maybe we added 1-2 db treble to the CFX +FM. Thats it. The board sounds really good. Best in the price range according to me. I think you should try it out and judge yourself. Best and good luck!

What the difference between Montage and MODX and which one is better?.
Jose Montage is the better one even though Modx is great too.
Montage features aluminum chassi instead of plastic, more dynamic sound, more hardware controllers (buttons, faders, knobs) better AD/DA converters, better keyboard inc aftertouch, bigger flash memory for loading new sounds and better remote function for daws like Cubase and more in/outputs.

Bobby kay they’re the same sound it’s just more dynamic on the Montage you may not hear a difference at all but once you play you will feel a different with the Keybed because that also affects how you process the sound through your ears

Tito Martinez two Canon cameras are used. The sound is recorded directly to the computer. Then it is synced with the camera sound afterwards.
