- PHILADELPHIA, June 10 -In West Philadelphia the atmosphere on the streets is almost palpably tense. Gang wars are a way of life-and death. So far this year, 13 Philadelphia youngsters, sev eral in their early teens, have been killed in gang violence. Some were innocent bystand ers. There were 39 deaths last year, 43 the The Talk year before, a total of 248 in of West the last 10 years. Philadelphia as often as not, the antagonists were no more than children. It is as if they were playing cowboys, but somehow, in some malign transmogrifica tion, the guns have become
The Talk of West Philadelphia
The average age of both victim and killer is a little over 16.
A Sixth Sense
One hundred and seven gangs have been identified, scores more probably exist and the minimum estimate of 5,000 is quite likely short by about the same number. There are white gangs and some Puerto Ricans, but for the most part the gang phe nomenon in Philadelphia is black.
Benny Swans, who is 23 years old, a former gang member and now a commu nity worker on the Philadel phia streets, has developed something of a sixth sense about which street gangs will start shooting at each other and which ones won't.
“The Osage Avenue gang is cool,” says Mr. Swans, “and so is Cedar Avenue. But the Mongol Nation and the Woodland bunch-they could blow any time.”
There are confrontations almost daily between the two groups, each with its own po tential for violence and al most random death. One day last week was typical.
Biggest gang in Philly is the police.
Thats every city!
The biggest gang in Philly is the Bonnet Crew.

An interesting video in 1970 I did not live in Philly just yet . I didn't get to Philly until 1973 from Brooklyn and I was fortunate enough not to get caught up in the gang life growing up in West Philly ..''University City'' and ....''Cobbs Creek''....my BIGGEST fear was dealing with the POLICE during the Rizzo era!! The gang situation at that time was starting to die down but there were areas where you still had to watch your back! I grew up hearing the stories about ...the ...''Moon gang'''.....'''hoopes St''.....'''Lex St'''....'''Cedar Ave'''......the notorious '''Woodland Ave'''.......the '''Four Corners'''....the ..'''Mongo Nation'''.....the ..'''El Manors''........the....'''Zip''......the '''Creek'''........the ...""Apple Jacks''''....(I heard they did crazy things with razor blades).!! So seeing Frank Rizzo and the beginning of this video kinda had me TRIGGERED because of my own bad experience with the police at that time at only 13 for no good reason and that the gang situation was being cooled down by a group called the ''House of Emoja'' ran by Queen mother Chaka Fhala...the campaign was called ''No more gang war in '''74 from what I remember. She didn't didn't get enough of the credit she deserved for stopping the violence!! But this was all BEFORE THE CRACK ERA....and sadly things have gotten WAY WORSE since then....just look at what we have NOW IN 2022!!
History repeats itself. Crime was going down before the pandemic and now it’s back to where it was 40 years ago.
What happened to mother chaka ?
It’s still the same, ima 70’s baby and 80’s teen. We just stuck in a loop 🤦🏽♀️ Philly come on!

Philly in the early 70s is a one a kind sight ❤️
East oak lane is a beautiful area real nice now only the mixed neighborhoods are slums
Exactly I remember those days I grew up in North and South Philly
Born in 73 west Philadelphia but claims Southwest and South mostly
I grew up in the 70s 80s 90s. Gangs were still highly active then. Hilltop vs Wynnefield, JBM, The Craig Haines crew, Moon Gang, the bottom, underworld, The Hollow, Somerville, Cedar Ave, Hoopes Street, The Black Gambinos, etc. Whoever said Philly wasn't known for gangs knows nothing at all.
Also The Valley and The Village gangs from North Philly!!!
Lived in West Philly late 60's, early 70's. The Moon, the Barbary Coast, 58th and Osage Ave. Ran into some gangsters from Germantown; Summerville, The Clang, Haines Street, Brickyard . Knew a brother from 13th and South in South Philly name Shoot Em Up. Another Brother was Diver Dan from 39th and Aspen. Cool Earl and Chewy from 46th street tagged the whole city. It was insane...!!

Wow this was crazy. Philly has always been rough for a long time. I'm from West Philly. Grew up there from 70s through the 90s. I remember the wars between Wynnefield, Hilltop, Parkside, Hoopes Street, H&R (Hazel and Rodman), Vine Street, The Bottom, Cedar Ave, and so on. During that time the crack epidemic was hitting and JBM was running shit until the early 90s when Aaron Jones and other JBM members either got locked up or killed.

Well, you have to look at the big economic picture of cities like New York, or Philadelphia in the 1960s; the major economic changes (that lead to economic stagnation) of the 1960s (in New York/Philadelphia) had had a major social impact: in the 1970s, and 1980s, New York was marked by crisis, and decline (with a full recovery only in the 1990s); likewise, throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, Philadelphia was marked by (a deep) crisis, and decline (however, unlike the recovery in New York, the recovery that started in Philadelphia after the year 2000, was only partial/limited in scope).
Back then Philly....we was our own "Cooley High". Every neighborhood had a "Cochise" that brotha that had inspirations of making in the NBA or least a college scholarship for playing ball. Every neighborhood had a "Preach"....that brotha that wasn't hood enough to gang war but you liked him because he wasn't in a gang or ran the streets. Every hood had a "Pooter"....you know that young Bol that hung around the older guys in the neighborhood....but won't allow him to be part of "Puttin' In Work" gang activities. Then we every neighborhood had a "Brenda".that pretty fly girl you saw & had to get with but unlike you there's other guys wanted her too.....then last every neighborhood had a "Stone.& Robbie"... Those guys you stood clear from them because.they was trouble from the start. Real gang bangin, reefer smoking, pint of "Johnny Walker Red", Knife packing mean dudes.....The funny thing about these young men of yesterday that ran with the gang & the streets are now seniors today that lived thru that period now tell stories about what they been through during the 50's, 60's, & 70's.......

Hey yooooo. That's crazy. I always wondered what happened to the JBM and BM family members
Philly had a lot of beautiful black people in the 80s
This is no longer the case?
Love your videos big fan. Keep up the great work.
This is fascinating, I'm so glad I found it. I work in Parkside, and I drive through Mantua and "The Bottom" every day. It's going to get gentrified like the rest of the city. These young men literally wouldn't believe what that area looks like now, 50 years later. Also this is the first time I heard 52nd St called "The Top." Fascinating.
That’s sad.
Anything below 46th is considered “the bottom”
Lol yea we say up the way when we talking about 52nd still. Up top usually Cobbs creek or hilltop. In convo and such
Parkside used to beefed with Wynfeild a lot back in the day,Mantua was underworld,36th Street,Hub, Aspen Street and 436 Market Street, and 52nd Street was always considered the top
This was true in Gray's ferry

-First it started with the Irish, then the Italians, then later came blacks, Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Chinese, then some mixed groups. When more companies opened up they mainly hired whites. Eventually whites moved out around the early-mid 60s, but the minorities were mostly stuck from then til now. & That's how it happened stretching for over 150yrs, from New York over to Cali. The End.

I grew up on 54th and kingsessing. I wasn’t even born until 74 but I remember people talking about the moon gang , woodland ave , mongo nation ect
Its all blocks going to war now. Smh
