Water less but deeply was a valuable lesson I learned this year!
It really is essential. Cheers!
I add clay soil to my compost pile for better moisture and nutrient retention.
Great data as always, Jeff. Neighbors rolled their eyes when I placed a plastic Powerade bottle in the midst of every thing I planted this season. I dug down about 5", put 2 holes in the bottom of the bottle & 4 along the sides approx. 3/4" from the bottom of said bottle. They're 16-20 oz. sizes & I watch them *blow bubbles/chug* that water down....I apologize, I'm easily entertained in the garden.
If it's been super dry & the bugs are not trying to carry me away....I'll refill those bottles a 2nd time. I also fan water them from top soil level &, either just prior to a rain shower or smack in the middle of its beginning.....I poke holes as deep as the soil permits in various spots around my garden. Plants *love rainwater* and I want to be certain I've done all I can to help them enjoy it. Cheers, ~ Covah
I agree Covah, rainwater is the best. I try to use it whenever possible! :-)
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms My flowers open up like starving baby birds after a rain shower.
You're so good at replying...I have to ask what to do w/my Artichoke come 1st frost which *claims* to be Sept. 30th this yr. I've never planted one & had no idea it took 2 yrs. to produce a crop. Its doing so well....strongly rooted even though it looked droopy when I planted it on June 1st. I'm getting anxious....how do I protect it from a MT freeze??
Yet over retentive soil causes winter problems in my wet part of Scotland . Raised beds was my way around it as bedrock close to surface leading to waterlogging /total dry out situations ! I am lucky to get free straw from my nieghbours pet activities .
Great video, thanks for sharing and take care 🙂
Thanks Christine, appreciate the support! :-)
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers!
Hey Jeff! How to equally saturate the soil?
I have a big square pot for multiple plants. I realised that some parts of the soil does not get saturated at all after watering. How may I solve this problem? Thank you.
Thanks Jeff! Where do you get that nice straw that you use for mulch? Do you buy it that way, or just run the regular stuff through a shredder?
I've been watch the channel for about 6 months now and always wanted to ask what is the mulch you use. It looks like pine shaving or straw. I've use hamster bedding, but the cost is pretty high. Mulch around here is that red stuff people use for landscaping. Love you channel
Nice but where do u find straw with out GRAZON. didn't know n that runed my garden for over 3+ yrs
My local feed store carries it
What’s your thought of biochar adding to your soil for water retention and nutrition holding power.
Very good video may I please offer one more suggestion underneath your tomatoes and other plants like that I use an underground watering system where I go to local auctions and purchase plastic piping and then I drill holes in the piping and I bury the piping underneath where I'm going to plant my tomatoes peppers and so on and so I'm watering the roots and of course I do the other things that you suggested but mostly I let the rain cuz we get it quite a bit here keep the top moist but I water the roots from down below maybe someone has some comments on this whether it worked for them or it did not work for them but it works for me I'd sure like to hear from all of you
Thanks Paul!
Sorry to bother you again but I want to add one more thing I have a well here where I live so I don't use the well water to water my plants it's cold and it's what we call hard water I collect rainwater off of my roof from when it rains and I use that to water my plants
Loves me some quicky
:-)
Much where i can get that
hello, very interesting...👍👍 to retain moisture, you can also use Water retention gels that you mix with your soil.
Yeah, I've tried zeolite and a few others.. Mostly for containere, not in my actual garden.
Jeff, I have a question, how do you get your straw mulch cutup so small and fine, could you please explain.
Hey elresre, I actually buy it that way. Its called "fine straw" and it comes like that. :-)
What mulch do you use?
Great video, thank you. What are you using for mulch and where did you get it?
Thanks Martha, I use clean fine straw. I get it from my local feed store.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms what do you do with the straw at the end of the season. Did you ever deal with "over-wintering mold" if it was used for the next season. Or, do you remove it? I'm in Minnesota.
@@g-mom9827 the straw breaks down and becomes part of the new top layer of soil
2003 we will us straw to our garden as we already have plenty of compost! But not mulch!!
Right on Linda!
Hi, may I know what could I do with the clay soil to make it more fine and water rentention but not clogging the pot holes
Build it up over time if you can. Some of my best garden beds started with a clay base.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms May I know whether adding sand to clay soil is a good idea to make it less sticky
The temperatures here in the summer are between 90 to100 degrees, how often should I water my beds?
Temperature is only one factor Lily. A watering schedule depends on your soil, drainage, aeration, plants, weather, exposure, thickness of mulch, etc... There are no universal watering schedules. At that temperature though, you're looking at a couple times a week, for sure.
My normal ph water is 7 and my runoff water from the soil is 3 do i have to reduce my my normal water to 5.5 to 6 or the target should be to the soil
First check the water witch get out than u try o adjust so its getting to the perfect drain water

My sand and clay disagrees with everything I say 😂🤦♀️
Ha ha totally Kerri!
My new home has a few busted sandbags bordering my carport area. The only purpose they seem to be providing is a perfect breeding ground for annoyingly strong-willed Thistle.
You da best
Thanks regatta! :-)
