juances Techique is very similar than what is used to pick disk detainer locks. Difference is that combination locks are cheap and have loose tolerances.
Yeah, my understanding is this gets a lot more awkward if you can't easily put tension on the locking mechanism (hence having to reach inside with a pick for some combination locks to pull/push the thing that interacts with the gates). I've tried decoding combination locks like this and I've found it extremely difficult to tell when something is a false gate. When your mechanism clicks into the false gate it usually gets bound on another gate, which often (to me) means I don't feel the stiffness LPL is talking about.
I wonder if it's possible to construct it in a way that prevents the weel being turned at all, when something puts tension on the mechanism. That woul solve the problem wouldn't it?
Depends on what one means by "combination locks". There are mechanisms that will prevent this type of attack (at least without a tool to put tension on the sidebar) even on cheap "number wheel" type locks like this one - LPL has several videos on how some can still be easily picked. Not an old fan, but I've seen one or two videos where he didn't even attempt to pick a lock that he was showing because it was likely impossible. Don't recall which ones though, sorry.
I can explain how the code change mechanism actually works on this lock. When the lock is open, the locking mechanism is blocked from turning. The actual code wheels are just rings around the actual locking mechanism, but with strong ball detents. What you are doing with the little tool in the holes, are just forcing the rings into new positions, by overcoming that ball detent. It is actually a pretty smart and good mechanism as it reduces the number of critical parts in the lock for code changing, since the actual locking mechanism doesn't need to be able to change code. In other locks, the code changing mechanism works by shifting the mechanism out of the code wheels, which is a weakness as now you must make sure the code changing mechanism cannot be activated while the lock is closed, usually by having a shackle detent into the code changing screw that prevents the screw from being turned while lock is closed or incorrect code is entered. In this Squire lock, the code changing mechanism is always active, so technically you could change the code while the lock is locked, if you somehow manage to seize the inner part of the locking mechanism and then turn the rings by force. This would just offset the code tough, so you would still need to know the current code to know what the new code becomes.
These videos are always so amazingly short. I never feel I got "my moneys worth" when watching these, but I guess it is the manufacturers and designers fault.
The Squire is the one we got for my gran. Had no idea it was that easy to break though! I think one of the most important things is where you put it, if you can't see it, you can't attempt to get in it.

This guy sounds like the doctor from star trek voyager...
@Koowluh Me too. Exactly my first thoughts.
However, strictly speaking, his title was Emergency Medical Hologram or EMH.
Computer, Deactivate EMH
MUHAHAHHAHAHA
Hi, LPL. Better than usual, but no cigar. Thanks for sharing! Stay healthy!
Also, this begs the question of what happened on Febuary 15, 1997? Though I imagine that might be personal.
I’m watching this right after I got rejected because I’m now an open lock and wanted to see a real one and immediately knew where I needed to go.
Rocket
Lock Brand: Impossible to break into
LockPickingLaywer: Hold my pick
Literally. He'll open it with a LEGO.
The screwdriver really helped me see what he was looking for
LPL, please make a podcast where you talk about lock history or lawyer things or anything really, your voice is so calming
Three minutes video on a lock? I definitely wanna buy this kind of lock.
A real missed opportunity by Mrs LPL not choosing 80085...
"Better than most, but still problematic."
That may be the highest praise I've ever heard from the lockpicking lawyer.
The Squire is the one we got for my gran. Had no idea it was that easy to break though! I think one of the most important things is where you put it, if you can't see it, you can't attempt to get in it.
I DEMAND a video of Mrs LPL picking a lock. You would have a lot of views, most youtube reviewers do that sooner or later as it's a way to add a bit of variety and humour to the channel.
Thanks
No no. We need to see mrs. LPL changing the combination. We need to see those hands.
Everytime I here "this is the lockpicking lawyer" my brain gets a rush of serotonin.
Strong body, multiple false gates, and a 5 digit combination rather than 4 digit? This seems like a huge improvement over every other key lockbox I've seen him decode.
LPL- This lock is better than most.
Squire HQ- Label all of these locks with "Better Than Most."
Bit depressing. Never picked a lock before. Saw this video, got my old briefcase and opened the lock (3 digits) after a minute. I never should have bothered with locking this lock.
Thanks for your videos. I'm temped to buy a set of lock picks and test it myself.
Ok wow LPL. Didn't have to call me out like that!
Small steps in the right direction.
Your videos are very informative og entertaining! Greetings from Norway!
Yes I am also here because I share common knowlage of locks, and deffinatly not because these videos are satisfying
LPL: "So I asked Mrs LPL to set it to a combination I don't know"
Mrs LPL: *Sets combination to anniversary *
you know its good when the video is longer than 2 minutes
