    I’m in the middle of installing a Furuno NMEA 2000 system on my boat. Good to see somebody else with backbone. (16)

    Hi Josh, I wanted to drop you a quick thank you note. We have been following your channel for a while now. We are on a similar path as you. We have sold our house and are now living full time in an RV with plans of purchasing a Sailboat in the next year or so. I fully expect to have a lot of repairs on our boat as we will be shopping on a budget. I really appreciate all your hard work and sharing your project with us! Corey (UA-cam Channel - Salty Escape)

    Great video. When ever I think about starting my sailing journey I worry they I wouldnt be "technical" enough to put together all the electronics but you made it easy as installing a home entertainment system. Keep up the good work.

    That's a lot of backbreaking work, but sure is a neat system having less wiring and less clutter. Like the idea how simple instruments can be added or terminated, or cables can be replaced while at sea. Great system. Good work, excited all is working, nice instrumentation, dam now i got to go back and look back for the volg on depth finder install. excellent work Josh. Great vlog.

    Love the videos. I have a bucket list with 2 items that have been on it for many many years. 1 was a Harley-Davidson which I now have and the 2nd is a sailboat. I follow a few UA-camr that are cruising on Cats and a few on mono-hulls. Then the one that bought used boats and are fixing them up. All of them show realistic expectations on the cost and difficulty.

    This is just a test folks...this is just a test! HA! JOSH...that has to be the best DIY vid everrrrrrrr! The attention you paid to all the detail was top shelf, off the hook and very easy to understand. OH..the EXCITEMENT of turning it on for the first time is sometimes even better than...well, you know! HA! I remember my first Ham Radio! (Kenwood TS 440) Unboxing that $1,200 bad boy is a sweet memory. Then when I turned it on and saw it light up along with hearing the speaker come to life... I couldn't wait to spin the dial to see who I could hear! WOW! BTW...If you promise to get this excited every time you kook something up, I'm going to send you an addition for your system so we can all hear you sound like a little girl at her first birthday party! PEACE OUT! Ü

    It is best and recommended by the manufactures to have your power supply enter the backbone as close to the middle as possible and be evenly distributed in even number of devices supplied. Meaning if you have 6 devices you want the power connection to enter the backbone between device 3 and 4. Still a good helpful video.

    • @wonderboy6511
      @wonderboy6511 Місяць тому +1

      Good comment. It’s not the “middle” as defined by number of devices, but “middle” as defined by summing the Load Equivalence Number (LEN) on each side of the power cable attachment point to the backbone. Ideally, you have equal LEN values on each side of the power attachment point to the Backbone. The LEN refers to the current drawn by each NMEA2K device in the network.

    Hi Josh ! The bilge of your boat is very shallow (just like mine a Dufour 3800). I notice that a lot of the electrical wiring on your boat is running UNDER the floor boards. Even some of the exposed wiring connexions are there. It would be a better idea to have those connexions located higher as possible (like behind the electrical panel), to avoid having those connexions under water, in the event of a water ingress. The bilge is shallow and it would not need a lot of water to have the floor board floating around and probably most of your navigation systems out of commission.

    Good info and easy to watch! So the simple display automatically knows what/how to pickup the gps and transducer feeds? Does the display itself have to be especially for gps/depth/speed etc or does it somehow just pickup everything? Sorry if daft question. Thanks

    Josh, thanks for the overview, I'll have to do this one day. My system is on the old NMEA 0183, but as components fail eventually I'll have to dive in. Are you happy with your system? I have a neverending battle with my paddlewheel sensor in west coast salt water.

    Old style coax ethernet networking... brings back memories. Wonder if there's a more modern NMEA xxxx that uses Cat 5+. Regardless... enjoyed the video and good luck with the continued modernization.

      While the bus topology is similar to 10Base2 with coax and BNC connectors, NMEA 2000 is CAN Bus, with the DeviceNet connector and two pins for power, two for data, and one for a drain/shield. The Signal K data format named after the Kilo marine flag that stands for ""I wish to communicate with you", is an open source attempt at a modern system that is transport agnostic and can use TCP/IP (Ethernet, WiFi) or serial (1-wire, I2C) etc. together with gateways that convert NMEA and other proprietary standards to the open standard Signal K format. This way anyone can write their own or use other peoples Signal K Apps or Cloud solutions to visualize the Signal K data from sensor inputs, as well as control outputs. All using an open standard without needing to license anything. Signal K » signalk.org/

    Two old maxims re a boat:
    1. It is a hole in the water into which one pours money.
    2. Two best days in a boat-owner's life: the day he buys the boat and the day he sells it.

    I have a boat from 1994 with no NMEA 2000 components installed. Lets say I wanted to install a new chart plotter and NMEA 2000 network. Would I be able to use the boat's old transducer and connect that into the new NMEA 2000 backbone, or would I need to replace the transducer with a new one?

    Is a backbone cable different than a T'd device cable? Or are all NEMA 2000 cables the same and it's just a "backbone" cable if it's used on the actual backbone?

    When you did all this, where were you/boat located (I know the boat says Newport)? I can not seem to find an economical place near San Pedro or San Diego where I could work on a boat on the hard where me and a boat would both be safe.

    I assume their plotters can also hook into that system? That looks really nice to only have to run one cable and one power source.

    • @JoshPostVlogs
      @JoshPostVlogs  5 років тому

      Hi Bob. Yes, their plotters will work on same system (B&G has the Vulcan and Zeus plotters), but note that the plotters require their own power cable in addition to the NMEA cable. The other thing I forgot to mention is the NMEA 2000 is interchangeable so I could actually put a Garmin plotter, for example, on this B&G system as long as they are all NMEA 2000.

    • @squirrelsrus1
      @squirrelsrus1 5 років тому

      That's cool. Makes sense. I guess for the higher current draw devices it would be nice to have them on their own power.

      Josh Post nice job! I enjoy your videos. Are you planning to add a chart plotter, or use a tablet? When I upgraded my electronics (mainly to add AIS) I installed a small chart plotter that uses WiFi to mirror to an iPad. It works anywhere on the boat and if the main system fails, I’ve got stand-alone chart plotter software on the iPad as a backup.

    • @JoshPostVlogs
      @JoshPostVlogs  5 років тому

      @@aircurv6279 Thanks Stuart. I was debating about a chart plotter. But I may just use my tablet with its internal GPS. I also bought a USB GPS antenna for my laptop. I'm doing Navionics on my tablet but I need something for my laptop. I'm trying to figure out OpenCPN to download charts on the laptop. Do you know of other options for laptop?

      Josh Post OpenCPN seems to be what most folks are using. Let me know when you’re getting close to West Palm Beach. There might be an empty slip in our marina that you could use for a couple of days.

    So can you clarify this for me, you don't actually cut the back-bone to "insert a new device T" right, rather you add more cable after the T, so if that is the case, what is the ideal backbone leg length? perhaps 10 feet or so? or what did you find?

    • @JoshPostVlogs
      @JoshPostVlogs  5 років тому +1

      You are correct. I had two 16 ft pieces of backbone. I also have another 6 ft piece that I'll use from the battery power to the screens. I would have been better with a 16 ft, a 10 ft, and a 6 ft, but they only sell them in a few sizes. Also note that you can put multiple T connectors (thus multiple components) at each end or split in the backbone. Some boats with a lot of components could have 4 or 5 T's side by side by side.
