@@michaelesterly7083 I was suggesting a couple of videos back that maybe the same company has a robot that can sweep and push snow and gravel off the pathway. Really big snow storms probably require the bucket.
I've heard people refer to a "farmer fix" as something that is potentially a barely-good-enough fix, but I subscribe to the "if it works, it ain't stupid" school of thought. Good solution with the socket and pipe.
I think the term “farmer fix” was born in the “dumb farmer” era. Personally, I hate that term. I know a lot of farmers, and there isn’t a dumb one in the bunch. If you are going to make a living at farming (hopefully the good Lord will see fit to also make your operation profitable, too!), you have to be a person who has faith, a person who practices a faith/religion, be a person who can wake up and get to work before the sun comes up, you can stay awake and alert for a few days running when necessary, you’re more than willing to put in 12 to 14 hour shifts days 8 days a week 53 weeks a year, be an agronomist, a veterinarian, a master grain geneticist, a master livestock geneticist, a chemist, an ecologist, a super mechanic, a financial expert, a climatologist, an income tax expert … and one heck of an incredible gambler. If you’re lacking in only one of those areas, you won’t survive as a farmer. And I’ll take a “farmer fix” any day because it’s probably better than the original was to begin with 😉 Here’s to all the farmers out there working harder than anyone else in the world at a job that touches literally everyone else in the world! 🏆
We have a 140 ft long 24in Kelly conveyor made in Seymour WI. It catches feed from 5 20ft silos. We made a socket like that and also have a hook style chain. Wever also put a freq drive and gear box for soft starting and eliminating the belt drive. We also switched to a spring loaded tensioner on the idler end. That really helps as we found w long conveyor the temperature really makes it expand or contract.
Nice to hear the system will not be down long if the Lely Vector has a problem. That would be a real concern of mine if something was to break down in the night, but I guess you all have that under control. Enjoyed watching, thanks!
Thanks for sharing!!!!!! In a way I feel like I've been on your farm for a couple of years haha thats how long I've been watching your videos ,keep up the hard work , you deserve a lot
Have to admit i was skeptical about the robot feeders, yall did a heck of alot of work in that setup and all in all seems simpler that I thought it would be very nice sir
Looking good around your farm. For your forage wagon maybe try narrowing down the exit hole above the apron chain Just so it scrapes off the top of the excess haylage in the beginning. We used to do that to ours because our blower tractor was a little under powered
Feeding system seems to be working great! With those conveyors starting remotely without a flashing light and audio alarm is quite dangerous. Adults working or Children playing there could be mutilated or worse. The hay wagon seems to be the most exposed one to cause injury.
The next time you need to buy those conveyor parts, they will be three times the price today. Inventory any consumable parts and go buy them now while you can. But armchair farming after the fact is easy. He's doing a great job.
@HellzBellz7 if they're gonna have to spend money on it anyway, better now than later. Guess we'll learn today (or maybe by late December) if things will continue to get more expensive or if we'll be getting some relief.
Use sand this winter instead of any sort of salt it will be better for the concrete in the long run. Also they make ratcheting wrenches that would have probably been a little easier than making your own tool.
I got to sleep in then lay in bed to watch you struggle- doesn’t seem right. You’re just like me, been watching since the path was poured for the robots. You’re one hard working SOB! I was paralyzed in 2020, I’m learning how to walk again tho. - so I can go back to commercial fishing- based on how hard you work and other mitigating factors- only difference between us is the scenery! Stay safe!
Also, i would think you'd want to hang on to that mixer wagon just in case, cuz feces doth occur my friend. I'm thinking power outages, computers fail all the time, etc. All this fancy tech shit is sweet, you're the only channel I've come across that has those robots. But, that mixer is 100% reliable, even if the power is out or in the event of strong CME's. Edit, never mind. Guess if I'd waited a couple min I'd have found that you covered that in this video lol
I was thinking about your winter time snow problem potential. Some small rotating brush on a small self propelled unit to clear the lanes may be a worthwhile investment once the mixer sells. They make small brushes that will fit on an ATV that would help with not only the snow but also to clear the driveway rocks and dirt if a rainstorm causes these issues.
Hi Eric. I guess Rosie and Evie are earning their keep, No? It will be interesting to see how they fare during the Winter. I'm sure they will do just fine, barring a major snowfall.
Not too bad so far on the teething problems with the new system. Seems like a farmers life is almost equal crops and critters on one hand split with maintenance and upkeep on the other. That one conveyor ought to give good service going forward. Makes sense to free up the capital tied up in the old mixer by selling it off.
Get you some magnesium chloride and keep on hand for the winter. It’s a lot better than salt or calcium chloride on concrete and metal surfaces. That way if it ices it’ll help the robots and not mess up the concrete
Being a farmer myself the thing that kills your conveyor is speed and the sprockets are to small on the end of the conveyor wear out the chain I had to change one almost every year on my cherry harvester
Would it be better to make a small silo inside for the hay so you could fill it with the skid steer a couble of times a week ? That must be better than getting that wagon out and in again.
b'ys ye had a great day for it. looks like a nice day of weather. out of curiosity, has the Meyer tried to attack the Lelys? Can't be easy being replaced like this.
You might oughta keep your mixers and keep it in good working condition. You’re working with lots of mechanisms. A “fall-back” alternative might be valuable someday.
And what is a legal comment in your book @@daveklein2826 ? "Wow, looks cool"? There's a button for that. I don't think Erik will cry from being reminded that winter might be a challenge, even though he knows. Maybe this will prompt him to make a video on how he's going to tackle it. Which will be a helpful outcome after all. What's your contribution?
Do you have enough backup power for everything electric that you need to run at the same time. I'm not a farmer but I've spent my life managing risk I wouldn't give myself only one way out of a bad situation. I'd keep that feed mixer at least until spring.
They have a large solar array that provides most of their power during the day. If they're in a low solar output and a utility power outage situation, their PTO driven generator may not power the whole farm at the same time, but it doesn't necessarily need to. They could power the milk parlor for milking, then run the feed system in between milkings.
8:25 I'm surprised you want to sell it. If something happens to the robots shut down for a day, how would you feed the cows? Or would you just write off the loss in production to insurance and not care?
They have had (and still do have) a PTO driven generator. Well before the solar system was installed. The generator is still needed for backup. The solar system doesn't have a battery bank, so it only provides power during the day. There are also curtain situations where it'll provide reduced, or no power. Such as snow, or cloud cover.
You should keep the feed wagon. What about break down of the automated system. You don't even know, if it's reliable during winter snow and ice storms.
Their Lely dealer is less than 10 miles away with technicians on call 24/7. Worst case scenario, they can borrow a neighboring farm's mixer wagon. Eric isn't that worried about winter weather. There's another farm in their area that has been running the same robots for years. He said that if they were further north like New York, he'd be more concerned.
Isn’t that the way, if it’s going to break it’s always in the middle of the night, the life of a farmer can’t thank you guys enough for feeding us👍👍👍
Your dad was having fun. Big smile on his face. Must like not waking up to feed.
Mechanics and farmers and tool fabrication. Gotta love it! Older stuff is gonna break down .
what do you do when ice and snow get on your robot cement paths ???
@@michaelesterly7083 I was suggesting a couple of videos back that maybe the same company has a robot that can sweep and push snow and gravel off the pathway. Really big snow storms probably require the bucket.
That black socket is made for Impact Tools. It is a harder steel than normal sockets as you found out the hard way....

Very ingenious idea with the socket makes that job a whole lot easier. Glad everything is working out with the new automated system. Stay safe

Always have something to fix on the farm and you and your Dad do it well. Great video, thanks.

Very impressed with your feeding system! Has been fun to come along with your journey to get it installed!
Get a skid steer rotary broom to old food and snow you need it!

You need a skidsteer mounted snow blower to maintain the robot pathways.
Wow. What would they do without a recliner professional like you
Great video Eric thanks for sharing updates with us
Pro Tip: welding round stock together is eiasier when you lay it in a 45 degree angle , it holds the pieces flush and true
You could contact Siegler farms in Michigan. They might be interested.

I love how well you and your and your dad work together and think similarly.
you could say that about anything anyone would buy in general. most people dont have thousands of dollars to waste on overstock however.
@HellzBellz7 if they're gonna have to spend money on it anyway, better now than later. Guess we'll learn today (or maybe by late December) if things will continue to get more expensive or if we'll be getting some relief.
Specialty tools, paint them a fluorescent colour to help you remember where they are the next time you need them!
I'm so happy for the new chains

Great awesome video, as for that feeder chain they were out , if you think the times that turns on and off in a day be supraised how it wears out .
For the hay mixer, could you put a piece of removable plexiglass or metal on the front to keep the hay from falling out.???😊
Can you do a video of the new mixer running on the track and feeding the cows! From filling to feeding and back again!?😊

That feeder cleaned up nice, I do think it will take that long to sell, because you guys take good care of your machinery.
Need a sidewalk brush for the skidsteer to clean the feeder path and can do the feed alley.
If it was necessary they would have it
He's already mentioned the possibility of getting one.
I use a ratcheting box end wrench to adjust those.
So?
Snow is going to be the real test
Great information, congratulations on all your modernisation
Gotta love growing pains! All good!!
That new chain sounds like a roller coaster lift 😂😂😂
Yes I made it in to the first slot
Eric, I would keep it for a backup, but I saw a 2021 f585 for sale for 39,900. Bryan

Great stuff guys good to see the new system is working great❤❤❤

should get a set of Pass through ratchet. They tend to not be the strongest but they do work !

Put a surge protector on your electrical panel.

Always something to fix on a farm

A brush for the skid steer will keep all of the concrete clear from snow
Great video brother from the imperial county ca 🚜🚜🇺🇲
Has there been any uplift in production since the switch over ?
Love the farm up grade 😊
Mixer looks some nice now!!
For $23 at Loews you can get a 9" socket extension with flex joint. Not as much fun as making it yourself, but certainly easier!
It needs to be a 9 inch deep socket, not just an extension.
Your can offer your mixer to Kip Siegler, he needs a bigger one and wants to keep his actual mixer as a backup
You beat me to saying the same thing!
@ hahahaha we are all extreme followers of these great farms
Excellent video
There’s a reason for everything that happens, it always could have been worse and God is always protecting you! The glass is half full, Eric 😉

2:11 no protective paint coat?
Kip siegler was looking for a mixer like yours
Awesome video Eric 🚜🚜🚜
Sell it to Kip in Michigan
Should get a front mounted broom for your skid steer for the snow
They have one they use for the silage pits
They need a recliner professional like you😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Have you noticed a difference in feeding costs? are the robots cheaper to operate than the tractor and mixer minus the operator?
Another Great Video 👍 Great content, keep up the great work!
Love the video much love and respect thanks for sharing ❤
Did you use any PVC primer before gluing those pipes together?
That’s what I suggested not to sell the feeder because these conveyer system does look a little rickety
The conveyor would be necessary to fill the old mixer so that doesn't help
Those conveyors are very popular and reliable
I know of some that have been in service for over 20 years

Grinder and cutoff wheel for cutting your socket
What a friend told me, I can't weld but I am a first class grinder!
I would be inclined to keep it for a while incase something would go wrong with the robots
Great video. Thank you guys
Its a different thing when you are trying to have equipment run unsupervised.
Haven't seen your videos for awhile. I just don't know why.
Excellent video!!
Hey watching from trinidad.
Wouldn't you be able to buy like salt spreader chain? the chain that goes into the floors of the spreaders, could probably get that cheaper?
You need to have some kind of backup for feeding. I think that snow and winter will be real test for that robots
Erik si dovrà tenere occupato a liberare i marciapiedi e pensare cosa usare per il ghiaccio se dovrebbero scivolare
What would they do without a recliner professional like you

How does pop's like the new set up
What happens if there is a long power outage? Is there a backup generator to power all of them motors and systems?
