- Опубліковано 7 чер 2024
- C64 Games are available in the droves. If I had a penny for every Commodore 64 game available then I'd have a lot of pennies, probably enough to buy some more C64 games. But, this video isn't about buying new games, it's about the best c64 game from my youth. From my unfettered past. This video is my top commodore 64 games from a nostalgic perspective, just because I feel the need to share my favourite games on every console and computer I owned throughout time. Some of us get that urge you know, and I hope you enjoy hearing about the results of that urge.
SPOILERS;
Driller
Badlands
Mayhem in Monsterland
Turrican 2
Stunt Car Racer
The Last Ninja 2
Space Crusade
Hail, the mighty Commodore 64 and it's vast selection of games!

Music is all sourced from C64 Games.

I remember totally other games: like pitstop 2, decathlon, summer games, wintergames, California games, Ghost and goblins, commando, international karate, Paperboy, Lode runner, Test drive
lol... Other than Last Ninja 2, I've never even heard of ANY of these games. Of course my c64 days were 1984-89. My favorites were Pirates!, Blue Max, Ultima III and IV, Autoduel, Elite, MULE, Ghostbusters, Loderunner, Beachhead II, 7 cities of gold...etc... But hey, I'm old....
Racing Destruction Set, The Bard's Tale, PSI 5 Trading Outpost, Archon, Summer Games, Boulder Dash, Montezuma's Revenge and Jumpman as well.
I liked pirates so much, i got Pirates Gold for PC... (i still have my fold out world map from original c64 game :)..) Super Huey, Ace2, Solo Flight, Echelon, there are TONS of games WAY better than the ones these "best of" videos EVER show.
I liked Pirates! so much I would go to a friends house when he was out, to play it all the time, his parents got use to me being part of the furniture :D
Pirates, mule, wizard, Jumpman, parralax, paradroid, lazy Jones, caveman uglympics, Rampage.
Airborne Ranger
Pirates
Blue Max
Hot Wheels
Grog's Revenge
Barbie
Face Maker
And a couple others I can't remember.
I have a few games that easily hit my list. My number one would be EA's, "The Adventure Construction Set". That game allowed you to create Ultima style adventure games from the ground up with everything customiseable right down to graphics, and game mechanics. Not only that, but it supported multiplayer so you could have up to four players running around your map/adventure. I even used it to create games, such as giant multiplayer deathmatch arenas and I even made a giant monster movie game with it where you could control a giant monster and go around a city smashing buildings while getting attacked by tiny tanks, military units and airplanes. Speaking of which, my other favorite C64 game was a game based on that exact premise, called "Crush Crumble and Chomp". I played the hell out of that game.
My peak playing days on the Commodore 64 were when Zzap 64 was the best magazine. Any game that received a 10/10 review was immediately bought.
They brought it back recently
My vote goes to Impossible Mission and The Great Giana Sisters.
Stay a while... Stay forever
Yes! this game made the C64. I want to do a Video on Impossible Mission soon :)
My vote goes to Defender of the Crown. Single player
Giana Sisters was really good fun though. Take turns 2 player
International Karate+ was pretty good 2 player game. Competitive 2 player
Wiz Ball was fun. 2 player co-op
impossible mission had a decent DS port
Magnus Persson Giant Sisters ahhh remember getting this from a cracking team wayyyyyyyy before it ever released. Good days.
You could take a hundred C64 owners and get one hundred different top 7'S mine would be very different from most but thats the beauty of these platforms each to their own.
No Forbidden Forest? Spy VS. Spy was awesome. Glad to see Stunt Car Racer made it to the list.
I love the tiltshifty-like effects at the start of this video... very artistic. Nice transitions too. That's there's no Mayhem in Monsterland port for the Amiga is criminal.
Paradroid says hello.
As does ELITE, URIDIUM and LORDS OF MIDNIGHT.
Hi, Paradroid Redux would like to come over tonight.
Master of Magic is on the phone...
I scrolled down just to post Paradroid.
For me, it was all about the classic RPGs, particularly the Bard's Tale trilogy.
Questron, Phantasie I-III, Bard's Tale I-III, and The Ultimas, oh yes.
Great list.
I still find myself humming the music from turrican 2 from time to time.
so many great C64 games missing from your list like Ultima 4, Questron, Raid Over Bungling Bay, Lode Runner, Beach Head, that Moscow game
Lode runner❤️
Fun Fact: The programmer of _Raid Over Bungeling Bay_ had so much fun making the map of that game that it inspired him to make _Sim City._
Straight away with the Ocean loader tune, can't go wrong. Loved my C64 got mine in 1989, just so much fun.
I had one of these in the 80s. My faves were the Spy vs Spy games, Ole, Ninja, The Way of the Exploding Fist and especially Airborne Ranger.
ferox965 Way of the Exploding Fist was a great fighter for the system
loved driller / freescape - thanks for showing some love - i thought the future had arrived like you when these arrived
Had many fond memories of the C64.Went to my mates in the school holiday and on a Saturday night, and just played for hours, the amount of hours playing elite, summer games, dropzone, monty on the run and loads more.Luckily in Leeds we have just had a retro arcade opened up so I can re live my arcade youth again
Wizball Color in at its best and Archon the only true “battle chess”
my list:
- Mail Order Monsters
- Mafia (Multiplayer)
- Paradroid
- R-Type
- Salamander
- Babarian
- Katakis (Multiplayer)
nice Video!
Mail Order Monsters for sure. EA was the shit back then :)
IndianaBones
EA WAS the shit back then...now they are just SHIT, LOL
Many thanks for voting Space Crusade your favourite. I was the producer of all versions of the game. My memory is that some of the team were Mark Cooksey wrote the music and Ade Carliss who did the graphics. Best wishes Pete
Stunt Car Racer is nothing short of a miracle when you consider the hardware it's running on and the framerate the developers managed to produce! If that's not impressive enough, the entire game runs on a single load! Bloody brilliant! ✌
I've played Stunt Car Racer back in the day, and being a programmer myself (well, as a kid, just started with BASIC), I couldn't imagine how on earth they managed to run this on a C64. Memories. :)
Driller, yes! The atmosphere was so immersive. Other favorites of mine are Zynaps, Sir Arthur Pendragon games, Batman, Uridium, ...... argh too many to mention.
Beautiful list, somewhere in there I'd throw in IK+, just a beautiful game
my first computer was a c64, i got one when i was 8. i remember i was blown away by some games compared to the other system at that time (videopac / Odyssey² / atari 2600)
The system had a lot of growth and potential.
From simple games to games that where almost if not better then some of the later 8 bit systems.
I was a speccy boy but I loved that Ocean loader 4/5 music by Jonathan Dunn used at the beginning of this video in the background. Total nostalgia.
Nice list... another top one (holds a place with me always) - is Myth, History In The Making... what a truly amazing game!!
Mule is my favorite c64 game of all time.
Mail order monsters is my favorite, but we still actually play m.u.l.e. 3+ decades later...
Subbed, bro.
Bruce lee , Impossible mission, Raid on bungling bay, Commando, Lode runner, boulder dash, elite.... goes on!....
All I can say is thank god for the C64 Mini or Raspberry Pi.....and countless instant ROMS!!...
I liked this video just because you put Driller in the list. That was an awesome game for me main because of it's brilliant music.
Cracking video 😀👍
Paradroid, Wizball, Creatures, Bubble Bobble, Elite, Racing Destruction Set, The Eidolon, Rescue on Fractulus, Koronois Rift, Impossible Mission, Summer Games, Boulderdash, Uridium, Toy Bizzare. All great games. Every C64 owner probably has a list that differs but these got me through my childhood
Wow! Thank you so much. I just cranked up my C64 to play Badlands with my 6yr old!
Mayhem in monsterland is really really impressive
The Commodore C64 used Memory mapping such that the sprite was on one plane and the associated color on the other plane it worked and made quite an interesting machine, I have DRILLER and it's follow up brilliant.
Mayhem in Monsterland was the nuts!! I remember the tape coming with some colour code thing you had to enter as some form of anti piracy. I lost that thing pretty quickly so i don't think i got to play much of Mayhem, but yeah I remember being blown away by this game.
Driller. Never understood but fascination was immense lol
I love lists like this because there's always so much variation! :D
Mine, off the top of my head (no, I couldn't keep to 7):
Wizball
Spore
Head over Heels
IK+
Paradoid
Gribbly's Day Out
Boulder Dash
Park Patrol
HERO
Mega Apocalypse
Rocket Ranger
Zak McKraken
The Eidolon
Rescue on Fractalus
Racing Destruction Set
Voidrunner
My 10 favourites were on c64: Giana Sisters, Outrun, powerdrift, international karate, wizzard of wor, street rod, commando, R-type, Ghost busters, USAGi Yojimbo (samurai warrior)
Ahaa, the samurai Bunny, love that game still!
IK was strong
For me, the best games were:
Mircoprose Gunship
Elite
Bard's Tale
Ultima IV
Jumpman
Flight Simulator (I actually "flew" across North America using "real" flight maps and plans)
I never had Space Crusade for the C64, but I expect I would have loved it as I love Space Hulkk (the board game)
DeltaDemon1 Gunship was Incredible!
some of my personal favourites include Arkanoid, Sanxion, Bombjack, Green Beret, Paper Boy, Commando, Ghosts n Goblins, Uridium, Monty of the Run, Auf Wierdeshen Monty, Delta + loads more
I loved to play Detonator, Blues Brothers, Flimbo's Quest, Hudson Hawk, Turrican and Raid on Bungling Bay.
Driller: *nobody* knew what the heck you were supposed to do!
Music was amazing though 😍
Maniac Mansion was good fun it took me about 18 months but i finished it eventually, IK +, BoulderDash , Bionic Commando(the Pal version). tons of great games and awesome times with the C64
driller is like No Mans Sky on the c64
Barely 1 FPS at 200p resolution.
Nice video ! Thanks ! I've just bought a C64 by the way, wayting for a SD adapter for it)
Hey Guv. A little disappointed that you did not have impossible mission on your list. To me that game was ahead of its time. The graphics ,the sound and the way the whole platform theme were presented was just completely mind blowing. Should do a review when you get 5 minutes.
Wauw, i rember this still.
Luv the music.
Should dust off my old systems and hook them up again.
Make some video's maybe.
Missed some awesome games from back in the day.
The good old days. Stuntcar racer and Badlands lol Remember me and mate playing hell outta em.
Great outro there!
Snokie, Lode Runner, Hero, and Congo Bongo were some of my favorites!
So right about Badlands that game did hook me.
My faves were Last Ninja 1/2 , Wizball , Boulder Dash , Great Gianna Sisters , IK+ ,Ghouls and Ghosts , Yie ar Kung Fu , Green Beret , IO and Bubble Bobble.
no maniac mansion / barbarian / skate or die / or SSI games?
Indeed. This list on video must be due to the fact he owned the machine late and never got exposed to the wast library of C64 titles, that are in the thousands of games.
Specs for psx
I don't think you guys probably meant it, but this chain makes it look like you're saying, that even though the C64 has a library of thousands of games, because his favourite games aren't the same as yours - he must be a n00b. :D
Unfortunately not everyone is into RPGs. But yeah, I loved the SSI games, especially the Gold Box ones, but other ones as well, like Demon's Winter
Don't forget Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders
Dropzone, Uridium & The Sentinal were my favorites. Spent many a Winter night on those as a kid.
Shoot ‘Em Up Construction Kit was also great. I made loads of games using it.
Some of my favorites were Wizard, Realm of Impossibility, and an odd little game called Doriath. There were a ridiculous number of games for that thing.
Flimbo's Quest was my favourite. It came in cartridge which was a huge thing!!
Kikstart 2 was by far the best c64 for me.
Ahhhh... kickstart 2. It was one of the rare games we actually bought. It cost 80 Finnish marks, there was 4 of us. Then we made 3 copies with a double deck cassette recorder. Pirating was much simpler back then.
Izzard Clips and trendy!
For me my top 7 (not in any order) would be:
Total Recall (which I think you used the music from at the beginning of your video)
Flimbo's Quest
Terminator 2 Judgement day
Creatures 2
Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge
The Addams Family
Space Crusade (great recreation of the boardgame, even better than Heroquest)
Great vid.
I love watching your videos, we went through same systems in childhood, but it seems none of the games overlap as I had those systems several years before you, due to my father teaching CS on university, and getting various computers for projects, financed by the university. Once project is done, he would just bring them home, so I got them rather early. My favorite C64 games were: Boulderdash, BlueMax, Karateka, BC quest for tires, etc, all mid 1980es titles. In 1987 I already had an Atari ST, and in the early 1990es a 386... But I never had any consoles or Amiga. My path was ZX-81, Spectrum 48k, C64, Atari 520ST+, and an early 386 (with EGA card, which I later replaced with VGA and added a soundblaster so I can play modern dos games).
Forgot Boulderdash 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and x. Also Bubble Bobble.
Thing on a spring?
Music audio is a tiny bit too loud. Sometimes it's equalling your levels. Rarely, but it happens.
You earned a sub. Great content.
For me: Blue Max held up, and was fun to play over and over. Trying to hit the pulsating targets was a challenge! I also enjoyed The Goonies on C64 but never got to the end, and Bruce Lee was a good early game. The worst? Red Max- I never could figure out what was supposed to happen, or the objective goal.
great system. I started with vic 20 Mayhem in Monsterland its looks fun to play
4:31 "As we know, good things, and programming competence, come to those who wait", Nostalgia Nerd. Love that quote, recorded it.
And I couldn't wait. Pestered my parents to get an Amiga. Sure it was good but when I see lists like this I realise I should have persevered with the C64 for a while longer.
Best C64 game for me is 'Wizball' everything about it is superb...the loading music, the ingame music by Martin Galway (brilliant), the game concept, the graphics everything!
I remember 'Sentinel' regularly making the #1 rank on 'Best C64 game of all time' so was so excited when I got it. Couldn't figure out what I was supposed to be doing.
Great list. Love me some Mayhem in Monsterland and Last Ninja etc. What's the game at 7:32 ? Looks like something I would enjoy.
That's Creatures, and yes if you liked Mayhem in Monsterland you may like it as well.
Thanks. Got to check that one out.
Creatures was awesome! In fact, pretty much all of Apex's games were great.
Hi Nostalgia Nerd. Great video. This brings some good memories. But can you tell me the title of the intro and outro theme song. I had that game, but I can not really remember what game it comes from. Maybe "Midnight Resistance" or some sci-fi biker game? Best regards
Myth, Creatures 2, Zak McKraken, Maniac Mansion, Usagi, Rick Dangerous to mention some of my favorites.
Kick-start 2, leadership tournament golf, sensi soccer (and I usually don't play much sports games)
Turrican II, love it... on Amiga. :)
At the end you showed some shots of "Impossible Mission"! In the late 80's, my friends & I had a bootleg9 copy without instructions, so we never could figure out exactly what we were supposed to do.😕 We dodged the robots & overlayed some of the puzzles, but then...? Anyone? Bueler?..😆
My C64 days were from around 84-88 at which point I upgraded to an Amiga 500. My fave C64 titles are The Last Ninja(The first), Gunship, PHM Pegasus, Silent Service, Airborne Ranger, Maniac Mansion, Marble Madness, Law of The West, the Ultima series, and so on. With gaming back then your imagination was much more active. Now your imagination is such a small part of the gaming experience. Imagination > Graphics.
Nice selection - but Impossible Mission and Archon not in your top 7? They're my No. 1 and 2. Cheers!
Some of the cheapo £1.99 range gave me hours of fun. BMX Simulator 2 players was awesome, same as Kickstart 2. I also liked the open play area of Clumsy Colin Action Biker (KP Skips).
As for C64 game music... I've uploaded my CJ set from Silesia Party 9, a C64-only demoscene party in Poland. C64 remixes and chiptunes. I rarely upload anything so I think no one would think I'm spaming - I'm just still excited. :) If you want - have a nice listening. :) Details in the description field. Nostalgia Nerd, I think you might like the second half of the mix, the more C64-game-dancey one. :)
ua-cam.com/video/FJ515JFzNC0/v-deo.html - CJ Warlock - Silesia Party 9 Live Mix (16.06.2018)
Circus Charlie my class in grade 3 was obsessed with this game LOL
I am surprised some of these games even made it to C64 due to memory and speed limitations. Well done C64!
Good video. While I never played any games on a C64, (Atari ST user at the time) they do look good, no, amazing for the hardware.
Thank you for sharing.
Very good list! But where is The Great Giana Sisters? :-P
Except for last ninja 2 never heard of any of these either. My days were 1984-1990 - Archon, space taxi, impossible mission, spy vs spy, bruce lee, racing destruction set, doughboy, spy hunter, jumpman , pogo joe, music shop to name a few
A couple of my favorites were....the classic Jumpman and Jumpman Jr.....and Paradoid.
You may notice I'm probably biased but Elite is my all time favorite. So much so that I'm still playing it to this day. The modern version. But Elite 1984 started it all for me.
Head Over Heels , Ghosts and Goblins , Paperboy , Last Ninja , Leaderboard Golf to name a few
Tiny Toon Adventures looks incredible! If you told me I was looking at a SNES platformer, I'd believe you. It's great seeing games made very late in the life of a system, when they've figured out how to really get the most out of the hardware.
CJ's Elephant Antics.
Also, Thalamus made quite a few really good games.
Badlands was glorious. In fact, I might take it for a spin right now...
Badlands is good, but I prefer playing the original arcade version on MAME
I never liked strategy games but I loved to play Space Crusade on the Amiga.
My favorite C64 game was Racing Destruction Set and Superstar Soccer.
I spent way too long constructing and saving race courses designed for jumps that worked only on specific gravity settings.
laser squad and lords of chaos was some of my favorite c64 games. both games even better on amiga.
As an Adult I do not know. As a kid my 5 favs were Last Ninja 2. FX 19 Stealth Fighter.(Project Stealth fighter in other areas), Pool of Radiance, Legacy of the Ancients. Would likely have different favs as an adult but it is hard to say, there are so many games for the C64, it is impossible to predict my favs from all of them or play all of them to find out.
Bold move to put Driller on the list. Does not get mentioned to much but I agree it was a great title I also loved.
Also airborne ranger , I loved that
That Mayhem in Monsterland looks like a really good one. It looks as good as a console game. The game I played a lot was Ghostbusters. That was another really good title for the C64. You can find the games online. People have copied them to the PC with a special cable. I am not advocating piracy, get the ones you own. The disk images are small and very quick easy downloads.
I was a pretty hardcore c64 fan and I never played or heard of any of these games.
Impossible Mission, Summer Games, Zorro, Murder on the Mississippi, Pitfall 2, Ghostbusters and Law of the West were some of my favorite games.
Some better games in your list... the games in this video is the worst list ever! I this guy is from Europe... for whatever reason I don't think they had access to the good games....
I can only agree with Last Ninja 2. But I never played the rest. Some other mentions from my childhood, ANY Dizzy game, Midnight Resistance, Thunderblade, Akira Warriors, Rambo 3, Sly Spy, Hawkeye, Last Samurai and more.
We loved Turrican II as well but it was hard for sure... We had never heard of Mayhem in Monsterland until now and I have to say it looks like a glorious C64 mash-up of mario, sonic, wonderboy... and probably a few other platformers of the time.
We have countless favourites we'd like to retrospectively review but so far, feel free to check out our C64 OutRun review if that's something you're interested in. Good, honest review sir.
Check out Sam's Journey
For me also D&D games. Pools of radiance. Champions of Krynn and more.
I remember playing Badland and exploited a bug that gave you loads of wrenches so you could buy everything after the first run.
I loved Stunt Car Racer for Amiga.
