  • Using your own speaker system in a hotel or conference centre for a banquet or large event. Typically good advice for a typical ballroom with 300-500 guests sitting down.

I recently ran sound for a conference. The room held about 350 people, and I used two JBL Eon 612 powered speakers (1000 W ea) on poles at either end, just off the stage, positioned 3 - 4 feet above ear level. Everyone in the room could hear every word, even at the back, and I didn't need to have additional speakers. People complemented me on the sound quality. Also, your video does not address the necessity of adding delay to the back speakers so as to avoid an echo-type effect caused when the audio from the front speakers reaches the back of the room later than the audio from the back speakers. This problem should be all the worse with 3 - 4 pairs of speakers, which I consider to be just asking for trouble.

Hi and thanks for your comment. Your points are well taken. Personally I've found that just projecting sound from the front creates people who complain about the volume since I have to be sure the other half of the room can hear.
I agree that a delay might be helpful when using distributed speakers but, big BUT, I've never worked an event where delay is an issue. I welcome any discussion on this point.
