I think leaving all that extra wire is asking for trouble. All the sharp bends from folding the wire to zip tie not only strain the wire but allows for multiple rub points between the frame and gas tank. Good thing you fixed it with relative ease this time, but if it happens again, you may want to consider doing something different.
Definitely an aggravating job. Sometimes a hair pulling nightmare trying to find the source of electrical problems. I don't envy anyone going through this sort of problem.

Very good 👍 on the left turn job. If I was doing that job would be rated R XX I a short temper with wiring.

Look for the scotch lock wire taps first. (Blue or black plastic). Those are a good place to look first.
