first winter hike with my daughter Ken Lockwood Gorge New Jersey

My first winter hike of the season, this time with my daughter. This time I went to hike the trail that I could see underneath while hiking the Columbia trail on a decommissioned railroad a couple of weeks earlier. This was end of November and we were shocked by the sudden cold temperatures that day. It even snowed some flakes for a couple of minutes at one point. Enjoyable hike on a cold day with my daughter. We turned back before the Califon station we had planned to go to because of the cold and didn’t linger around after the hike.

in French/ en français : ma première randonnée d’hiver de la saison, cette fois avec ma fille. Cette fois-ci nous sommes allées randonner sur le chemin que je pouvais voir en dessous lors de ma dernière randonnée d’automne sur la Columbia trail sur l’ancienne voie de chemin de fer quelques semaines plus tot. C’était fin novembre et nous avons été surprises par le froid et les températures basses ce jour-là. Nous avons même eu brièvement quelques flocons. Belle randonnée un jour de froid ave ma fille. Nous avons fait demi-tour avant d’atteindre la gare de Califon où nous avions prévu d’aller à cause du froid et nous ne sommes pas restées longtemps dehors après la randonnée.

That was quite the walk. I would love to live in one of those houses by the river, that is such a pretty area.

thank you, yes it was a nice brisk walk, we were surprised by the cold, it had gone to short sleeve weather to parka weather in a matter of very few days. that's why we didn't linger around to have bite to eat or drink after the hike, it was too cold specially in the bottom of that gorge, with humidity the feel like was even way lower. Agreed it's really pretty. However I would be hesitant to live anywhere near any body of water in New Jersey, all rivers, streams, lakes, ponds are prone to huge floods, several feet minimum and several times a year actually. We are always flooding all over the state, as soon as there is rain which is almost monsoon. That's why the drought was really unusual specially in the fall where usually we have downpours. Actually in July we had tons of flooding all over (even in my basement, even though I live on a hill) then starting end of July no rain until 21st of November ! Or maybe have a special building on stilts or something but still, the road we hiked on used to be a dirt road open to traffic, thus that big parking lot in the middle: now closed because destroyed by flooding and landslide.
