While on our honey moon, We listened to Errol Garner play this song at the PallsMalls Jazz Club in Boston in 1972. Our small bar table was so close to the piano I could have easily reached over to to touch the low A on Erroll's piano without taking my other hand off my drink (Gin and tonic, thanks for asking). What a thrill that was. It's also a thrill to hear your beautiful guitar arrangement of this song!
I saw quite a few people at the jazz workshop in Pallsmall in the 70's George Benson, Earl Klugh, Horace Silver, Brecker Bros, Tony Williams, Deodato, Yusef Lateef to name a few. Best time of my life.

Love the Bossa Nova vibe thrown in. There are of course a million (so to speak) covers of "Misty," but I've never heard Bossa Nova added to the mix. Very, very nice. Well, I just subscribed. Glad I did.

I like the Bossa Nova feel, too, but something puzzles me. He plays the 'A' sections with a double time feel i.e. I find myself counting 8 to the bar. In the last bar before the bridge and during the bridge until the last bar he changes to a 4 to the bar feel, without a change in tempo. At the last bar of the bridge he goes back to 8 to the bar for the final 'A' section. Perhaps I am hearing it wrong. Any comments?

01:18 Generally, I am not a fan of the "slappy tappy" style of playing so popular today. It's not the "slap" itself that is irritating, but rather it's the overuse. I equate this to a novice chef who has just discovered cilantro and dumps it into everything.
You demonstrate how a light seasoning of a slap can gracefully spice up a guitar line, however. The effect is so understated that it's almost imperceivable. Beautifully executed!

Ok, so one night several years ago, I sat, in a place called Jazz Alley, eating dinner with friends. Our table was less than 10 feet right in front from our entertainment for the night. The Brazilian Guitarist was Laurindo Almeida was playing. OMG it was a fantastic evening of food and guitar. Now, at this very moment you have brought back that moment. Now I can add yet another guitar hero to my list... Walter Rodrigues Jr.. Thank you so much for your efforts at your craft. Maybe someday I can be as good.

My new favorite guitarist -- Walter Rodrigues Jr. The content of your solos (great economy of style -- you convey so much in just one chorus). You also get the best tone I have heard from Godin's Multiac nylon string. I'm late to discover your delightful renditions -- I happened on my new favorite version of WHAT A FRIEND less than an hour ago. And was compelled to leave the following comment: " . . . For lovers of Jesus & Jazz, it is hard to imagine a more lovely finger-style approach to a song that has been played by every great finger-style guitarist -- including Martin Taylor, Doyle Dykes and Tommy Emmanuel. But to my ears, this is the best version -- simultaneously 'artless' ("Heck, I could play that!") and deceptively simple -- yet complex. Your unique chord progressions, around 1:18 and 1:50 are a blend of reverence and jazz artistry quite beyond anything I've ever heard. For the opening few seconds I thought of Earl Klugh (another hero that got to work with Chet) but very quickly realized that "Walter Rodrigues Jr" is uniquely blessed. Thanks for posting and . . .
