Dunedin Railways: The Southerner - October 2019 (HD)

During the 24th & 25th October 2019, Dunedin Railways was chartered by Pukekohe Travel once again to run a segment of their South Island tour by rail from Rolleston to Dunedin. On the Thursday, Dj’s 1210 & 1227 ran a Seasider excursion to Waitati which we capture on the return to Dunedin, before the locomotives and their train of 2 ADR carriages, 1 AO carriage and an AG power van travelled north empty to Ashburton. 1210 was removed at Oamaru whist 1227 continued north alone long hood leading. On the Friday, 1227 and its train picked up the travel group at Rolleston, and traveled along the Main South Line at speed to Dunedin, a reminisce of the old Southerner Express passenger train between Christchurch & Invercargill, enjoy!

Remember travelling on the Southerner in 1995 on my trip to Christchurch after attending my friend's wedding, it was a great trip after so many years away from it.

To be honest; a regular service between Christchurch and Dunedin might be the key to the survival and future of this company post COVID-19.
If they make a success of it and make it regular; someone in the MoT or the regional councils could even offer subsidies.

Why did they take off 1210?

The hard bit is Dunedin to Waikouaiti. They probably left the locomotive at Oamaru to then reconnect when the train returned there
