If you're not aware, the first one is from "All New Materials", second is "Luck as a Constant" and the third one is from a pedal demo he did, search for "Mark Holcomb Haunted Delay Demo"! Although the youtuber Scias did a 9 min loop version of the third one, might wanna check that out.
I applaud anyone who has the patience to dial through all of those settings and the programming involved. I’m also impressed that with that much gain and three guitarists everything sits so well in their mixes, I’ve no doubt that any one of them could make a career just being an engineer and producer; simply fabulous attention to detail and great “ears”.
I'd love it if Mark uploaded his current patches to the Fractal Axechange site. I love being able to see what someone was thinking when programming their sounds.
Great stuff, but this really should be classified more as "gate staging" than gain staging. I've always understood "gain staging" to be more about using gain at different stages of the signal path to a cumulative end - a distortion pedal into a dirty channel on an amp, and cranking the power amp section - that's three stages of gain that make up the overall gain in the tone proper. Great lesson in what a Fractal can do with gates and midi control (I may implement something like that on my Fractal, albeit without the automation), but it's really not "gain" that this video was about. As always, love watching and listening to Mark discuss his music and his setup. Thanks, Mark!
I think it's cause they change the amount of input gain to control the noise gate, rather than change the gate threshold (although it could probably be both)
Agreed. I messed with the HBE block and one of Misha's cab mixes from the Cab Pack #13, threw the T808 Mod drive in front of it with a noise gate and came sort of close to the tone Mark uses in all the videos he makes. I'm also using his sig PRS with the alpha/omega, so that also helps obviously. It's close, not exact... but pretty close.
I'm not sure if its what he used in this video, but this sounds like his signature tone I've heard everywhere else... In the quick moment they showed the front of the AxeFX here, the amp model was a Suhr Badger. likely was that clean tone we heard tho
He puts those on himself. In an interview he explained that eventhough he loves is $4000 signature that he wanted to make one that was as affordable as possible while still keeping the most important parts like the pickups, neck profile, and fretboard radius. All he changes is swapping the tuners, the nut material and one of the knobs to a push pull to make it better to use live.
I find his tone atrocious. I'm not sure if it's the pick ups or the pick he uses. It sounds so scratchy, muddy and dry and sometimes thin depending on what he plays.
If you watch the in the studio he plays it, also the new reptile play through. And he actually uses it as a main live guitar. There was a video where he explained the process of working with PRS, to give the fans a guitar that sounds as close and plays the same as the $4000 model. All he does is add locking tuners and change the nut. For better tuning stability live.
I've tried digital amps and digital effects... they all sound liveless and sterile to me. Still can't beat a good valve amp that is responding to your fingers and amp. Digital just gets between the music and any feel. Not for me... It seems to be the manufactuers of this gear that are promoting it; suggesting that if your not using it your not in step... a good old sales technique LOL
You mean soulless like the guys such as Satriani, Vai, Govan, Schon, Lifeson, Bumblefoot, and Vernon Reid who all use the Axe Fx?? Yeah, what in the hell would they know, Right?
Thanks for having me yet again, Reverb. Say... can I just live in your offices? xoxo
Anytime, Mark!
Mark Holcomb great video Mark
Mark....we need to see more of your badass self on your channel
Oh hi mark!
Mark Holcomb can you please show me where to get your haunted relay signature pro tone pedal?
That clean section gave me chills.

That intro riff to All New Materials has to be one of my fav riffs of all time!
All new materials has the most happiest clean riff
All new materials has the most happiest clean riff

Mark is seriously my favorite riff writer ever
These guys are modern music pioneers. Their creativity knows no bounds. Love watching this dude and Misha give insight into their creative process.
3:25 🗣LEFT IN THE ARMS OF THE LIVING I SHAKE, LEFT IN THE COOOOLLLLLDDDD 🎶🎶🎶
🎤😫 #P4
Man there are some KILLER tones in this vid, i love how dry and tight the gain tones are, yet very saturated at the same time.
3:23 Finally he played it on another video
No, its just an idea he played on this delay demo you said
mathrotondano It's so beautiful. Anyone knows any songs that have clean passages like that?
In this video he played passages from All New Materials and Luck as a Constant. PII and Juggernaut (both) have some beautiful passages
my heart... oh damm
mathrotondano All New Materials is a great song. I'll have to give Luck another listen though
I've heard Mark play that riff at 3:25 in a few different videos. Hopefully it's becoming a Periphery song
Jacob Jung I think I'd prefer it to be a haunted shores song rather than a periphery song.
Now it is
I think it's the clean section of luck as a constant
Check out Satellites on P4. It's the lead up riff before chorus
I'd love it if Mark uploaded his current patches to the Fractal Axechange site. I love being able to see what someone was thinking when programming their sounds.
Dogma Soup He’s not your guy, buddy.
2:32 All New Materials
3:03 Luck as a constant
3:23 Satellites
4:08 Marigold
AAAAAHHHHHH He played that clean riff from his delay pedal demo again :D
The clean part is just superb. Mark is an amazing player!

All new materials, sentient glow two of my favorite riffs of all time ❤🔥
Surreal to see him playing the Satellites riff 4 years ago
Technically, the Protools session that accompanies them 'live' all the time is another member of the band from the sound of it... ;)
More like a guitar tech who hangs out behind the amps and tapdances on their pedalboards for them lol
Marks riffs just get so beautiful
I see Misha posting cab packs and presets etc.... but I am constantly waiting (dying inside!) to get my hands on Marks presets! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
Agreed. I messed with the HBE block and one of Misha's cab mixes from the Cab Pack #13, threw the T808 Mod drive in front of it with a noise gate and came sort of close to the tone Mark uses in all the videos he makes. Those are the same, Misha said it !
yeah all 3 of them use identical presets, the only difference is the guitar
Martin Graham axechange preset please???
I'm not sure if its what he used in this video, but this sounds like his signature tone I've heard everywhere else... In the quick moment they showed the front of the AxeFX here, the amp model was a Suhr Badger. likely was that clean tone we heard tho
Love that New Materials riff
Steven Phillips Such a fun riff to play!
Easily my favorite song by Periphery. Never in a mood where i wouldn't listen to it.
sry, awesome riff, but won't ever be able to listen to the song anymore, because of that Katy Perry thing :/ outch
2:31 Love this
Cleans from my favourite periphery song!! Frikkin awesome
a macbook automatically switching patches on 3 Axe-FXs... mind blown
wallet blown too
Absolutely and there's at LEAST 2-3 of those rigs for redundancy. Computer crashes and the show is over. LOL
@@RobKMusic lmfao they got backups... u know how much gear these guys have
im pretty sure increasing the choke of a noise gate per patch isn't what "gain staging" is
im pretty sure they're doing more than just dialing the noise gate
maybe he meant gate
Aye 2 years later and we've got Satellites 😌 3:22
1:35 he breaks into Absolomb lol
That dissonant chord at 1:08. I must know what it is. And also is this stop c?
The riff at 4:10 - is that from a Periphery song?
amazing video... What's your guys favourite clean amp on the Axe FX?
1sheldon peeping their vids, they tend to use the Suhr badger 18 (this vid) as well as the Shiver clean.
Amazing tone & play
Best tone in the business.
So .....after the click in....it automatically changes all presets on time?.....very cool
omg that clean section O_O is it from a song?
I do something similar with my live audio consoles where I’ll make a snapshot or macro for my drum noise gates.
just realized that this video has the closest to seeing any of them perform Absolomb
What's the opening riff?
Is he using a 0.60mm Tortex III pick?
Can someone PLEASEE tell me what song he’s playing at 2:33? I’ve heard that riff before but I can’t remember where
It's All New Materials off of P1.
so good
1:36 absolomb?
Does anyone know what song 3:22 is from? Is it also from luck as a constant?
Satellites
@@adenmcguire2282 thanks dude
What is the name of the song at 2:30?
All new materials
@@user-iw4fq9ml1r Can't wait to hear the full song!
2:32 that sounds like sithu aye a little bit
"Really tight unmusical sound"
Your being extravagant with four words when one will do... crap
Sattelites!
My PRS Holcomb didn't come with locking tuners!! LOL...
Just send me your patch and global settings, Mark. lol
I've got the alpha/omega set so it would work for a "starting point" at least
mark is 7'2
It's me or the G string is untuned?
Holy noise gate
#foundonreverb
More like noise gate stages, lol
Djentomotron3000
If Chris Cornell and some random chick had a kid.
yeah but pedal boards look funky & cool
The gain channel sounds like my old Metal Zone
Does Periphery III also sound like your Metal Zone? It was tracked with an AxeFx II.
I find his tone atrocious. I'm not sure if it's the pick ups or the pick he uses. It sounds so scratchy, muddy and dry and sometimes thin depending on what he plays.
PRS guitars are for lame dad rockers
bet you play a bc rich then loll
Unless you play a custom hand made instrument. Whatever you play is of worse quality than a PRS. That is an objective fact.
this fool refuses to play his SE but expect us to buy it.
Who would choose that over the better American model if given the choice? Do you honestly blame him lol
He plays his SE constantly. Both on the album, live and for in person gig's.
If you watch the in the studio he plays it, also the new reptile play through. And he actually uses it as a main live guitar. There was a video where he explained the process of working with PRS, to give the fans a guitar that sounds as close and plays the same as the $4000 model. Tom S. Gao He’s literally using the SE in this video
No soul
I've tried digital amps and digital effects... they all sound liveless and sterile to me. Still can't beat a good valve amp that is responding to your fingers and amp. It seems to be the manufactuers of this gear that are promoting it; suggesting that if your not using it your not in step... a good old sales technique LOL
If your sound is lifeless and soulless because of the amp you choose, consider that it may be your playing that ultimately lacks soul.
You mean soulless like the guys such as Satriani, Vai, Govan, Schon, Lifeson, Bumblefoot, and Vernon Reid who all use the Axe Fx??
Yeah, what in the hell would they know, Right?
