The issue is that if he continues to strain his voice he will lose performance over time. It's the same reason why most screaming singers tone down their music over time. The thing is if you don't use the proper technique it can go from good to worse in a matter of a year or two, instead of someone like A7X or LP that took around 5 years.

As a musician, I can vouch for them for sure. Dude its hard to play live when its like 1000 degrees and there's sweat pouring in your eyes and you desperately need a drink of water and you're physically exhausted, but you have to keep powering through giving 110% each and every song. They did a great job on this performance in my opinion!

He nailed it the whole way through, but no live performance will ever sound exactly like a studio cut.
Agree that he shouldn't be expected to sound incredible, however there are some artists (Trevor from Thousand Foot Krutch comes to mind) who sound almost identical live.

And yeah everyone knows it takes effort to sing live--every band has people that run to the defense of the singer whenever they put on a lackluster, or outright bad, performance--but it's literally their job to be able to sing their own damn songs, and, at least in this video, he can't do that as well as he should be able to. Haven't checked other performances, yet.
the studio version requires vocal strength to keep the note at such a heavy tone without your voice cracking i can do it but it takes alot of strength and is hard on the vocal chords so him doing this live will never be as hard as the studio version but it still takes an immense amount of effort

Watching this in 2023 is amazing to see how far Dustin has come over the last decade. This was the Starset we fell in love with and it only got better from here.
It's amazing what they did on the album, but I knew it'd be difficult to translate when playing live. They really need 3 guys singing the harmonies, and adding a person to only run effects would be a good idea as well.

honestly i'm a woman and a mezzo-soprano and this song is difficult to sing just because you don't want to sound weak during the chorus. so no head voice. and there's a lot of emotion in the song in general and if you don't push a bit to get that to sound the song loses most of its power. the performance was great. the vocalist really pushed himself for the chorus.
