My 17 yr old son, the light and love of my life decided to e d his earthly struggle five weeks ago. This song has helped me break open and cry properly. Thank you so much. Martha. Your voice is the most beautiful I’ve ever heard. And this song is haunting my head
I am ab 86 years old retired criminal defense attorney who tried many capital murder cases, but i also weep each time i view this video. Ms Wainwright's emotions and sorrow are so real that she is truly singing to her mother.
@@johnhawken4579 You're very welcome, John. Jean was clearly very important to you & what does it take to show a little kindness? You take care, Sir. (PS. I cried too watching this video today!).
Beautiful piece of music. There is a version of this song on Sing Me The Songs:Celebrating the Works of Kate McGarrigle that shakes me up even more. Martha sings on that one as well, joined by her aunt, Sloan Wainright and several other strong voices. Through technology, Kate McGarrigle's voice is also heard. That beautiful it makes me cry.
She's exquisite in every way...her feet, extensions, form, lines, beautiful body and arms. She has a fragile and vulnerable look about her yet so powerful.
Martha: This song is extremely beautiful because of it´s simplicity and their harmonic details. Love the theme, the lyrics and the concept. But you did something incredible with it. When something becomes flesh through the love, the best pieces of art are created.
This was the first song I listened to after my uncle died, and though I had largely been tearless, I dissolved into a ball of snotty tears. It hurts to lose someone that was close to us, obviously, but to think of what this would feel like for a god, that has no precedent, it I suppose explains smiting the earth, the theft of her beloved daughter by the outcast god would be so offensive. I will miss my uncle, and I wish you well with the loss of your mother, and everyone else significant that you've lost.
Christina, Come stai? Update, please! Did you ever get involved with or create a dance piece to accompany this song? I would love to see it, as would many others.
Trash Fire absolutely blew me away, especially the sad ending that was perfectly executed with this beautiful song. It will always be one of my favourite movies.
The song of every mother who has lost a child, to the streets, to addiction, to an abusive relationship. We just want them to return to our embrace, no questions asked.
I first heard Kate play this song Friday, October 30, 2009. It’s a song for the ages. And now it’s been over 10 years since Kate has gone home to mama but I/we miss her still daily
I loved the McGarrigle's songs when I was eighteen or so, and now I love Martha singing her mother's last song, a simple song, everything burnished to the essence, as we all should be.
I listen to this song over and over, and it touches me deeply every time I hear it. What a remarkable family the Wainwrights are. I miss Kate, but I am thankful that she gave us two such wonderful voices in her children.
It’s a beautiful and sad story. I wonder if a lot of Greek and/or Roman mothers had young daughters stolen to be married or sex traded and this was their plea that they could relate to the lack of harvest. If it’s how they dealt with not only the agriculture pains but the familial experiences that were their reality.
In my first book, Sam sings this song in the shower during his first, unbearably beautiful evening with Elli. Subsequently she chooses the song for his funeral. Utterly, heartbreakingly beautiful.

Haunting, evocative presentation of a song with roots in Trad. (e.g. 'The Changeling Child) yet with the eternal ebb and flow of a simple yet unforgettable melody. Many thanks, Kate and Martha.
Extraordinary, but why should we expect anything less? Martha and Rufus have such a great pedigree having been born to parents Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III!
Yes. And this is a bit confusing. I have just finished an article based on this song, and found this a bit strange. But I give kate mcgarrigle the artistic freedom here. "Proserpina" and "Hera" suits the melody. Demeter and Hera were sisters, so it's close. I also find the name "Proserpina" catchy. think the song would be very different if one used "Persephone."
Proserpina, Proserpina Come home to mama Come home to mama Proserpina, Proserpina Come home to mother Come home to mama now I shall punish the earth I shall turn down the heat I shall take away Every morsel to eat I shall turn every field into stone Where I walk, cryin' alone Cryin' for Proserpina, Proserpina, Come home to mama Come home to mama now Proserpina, Proserpina, Go home to your mother Go home to Hera Proserpina, Proserpina, Go home to your mother Go home to Hera now She has punished the earth She has turned down the heat She has taken away every morsel to eat She has turned every field into stone Where she walks, cryin' alone Cryin' for Proserpina, Proserpina Come home to mama Come home to mama Proserpina, Proserpina Come home to mama Come home to mama now She has turned every field into stone Where she walks, cryin' alone Cryin' for Proserpina, Proserpina Come home to mama Come home to mama Proserpina, Proserpina Come home to mama Come home to mama now
As I just commented to a friend...it could just depend on how you take the reference. Officially, both Demeter and Hera live on Olympus, and Hera could be a second "mother" in the "Queen of the Gods" sense. I'm more confused by the choice of mixing and matching the Roman Proserpina and the Greek Hera, really...ha
If you dare take my child I will be your end. I will salt your fields. I have already borne the loss of another , the loss of loss an no more loss can be tholled without vengeance. I am scourge of Earth and a gentle lamb for that wee one. Don't mess with me or mine and expect to be unchanged......... I enjoyed being tat character
It's Demeter (Ceres) who is calling Persephone (Proserpina). The Greek myths get confusing-lots of incest, wife-swapping, etc. The reason P. becomes the queen of the Underworld is that she eats something while in the Underworld (just a few pomegranate seeds!), so then becomes part of it (for 1/3 of the year)-Pluto's wife. And, yes, Hera is the wife of Zeus, and the mother of Heracles (Hercules in Rome). You'd think that the writer would have gotten those important details right. Beautiful song, though.

Makes me cry for my little poodle who died.
Just the most hauntingly beautiful song that has remained with me since the moment I heard it. Ancient and timeless,
