Smog 360 Small Block Mopar Head Porting

  • A few months back, I pulled a 1979 LIttle Red Express truck in to the shop, and removed the stock engine. That engine was brought to ‪@edsmachine93‬ for block work and more. Sadly, the factory 360 heads from the engine had cracked seats and we found a pair of comparable Stock replacement heads.
    In this video, I do some simple port work and casting clean up on these Early 70's smog 360 heads. Once completed, these heads will go to be finished by ‪@edsmachine93‬ for Multiangle valve job, new valves, seats, springs, and hardware.
    For more accurate examples of Small block mopar head porting, check out ‪@servediocylinderheads‬

    Nice work Joe, I know that is takes alot of time around the valve guides.
    I definitely have something to work with for sure.
    Thanks for sharing the process. 👍
    Thanks for the shout out.

    Great respect to you engine builders that port, increase valve size, reshape combustion chambers etc. Pretty fiddly and tedious work. I don't have the patience for it. But cudos to y'all that do. That's why I see your tail lights...lol.

    Looking good Joe!!! I did some porting on a few sets of heads and the only place other than the push rod area that I had to be careful with is the roof of the ports because of thin iron at the cooling chamber. I made an oopsie and went too far one time lol

    Nice job Joe! I just did my (302) castings for my 318, and that long valve guide in the intakes is a real pain to get ground out of there! I need some of those long shanks.. I’m sure those definitely help

    I used a set of '308- casting' 360 heads on my '76 318 in my Valiant. The factory machining was so bad (the car was an original 88K mile car when we started), that the decking required to clean the top end up turned the KB pistons into pop-ups and would have over 10-1 compression ratio with the 308 heads & stock head gasket thickness. With 0.060" thick Cometic MLS gaskets, the compression ratio ended up being 9.45-1, so pump gas was viable. Heads? New guides, exhaust valves, multi-angle valve job and a little cleanup. It's not a race motor, but it's a very nice street performer that isn't finicky.

    I would definitely gasket match the head , start at your line and roll it into the port no need to hawg it out , will definitely make a difference in low to mid throttle.

    • @JustMoparJoe
      @JustMoparJoe  6 місяців тому

      Thanks Brian. I’m going to port match the intake to the heads on final assembly. That way I can double check roof alignment.

    I gaskets matched both heads and intake on my 318. My thoughts are bevels flow better just like the top of a velocity stack and you can take a good amount off the push rod pinch. I also opened my intakes up to 1.94 valves.

    Nice work and very instructive for me. I want to overhaul my engine next week and also wanted to port the heads and file away the heel of the original valves. Does that help or can you neglect filing the valves

    • @JustMoparJoe
      @JustMoparJoe  6 місяців тому

      Hey Phil. You can definitely see a gain by backfacing the valves. It’s usually a simple and inexpensive process at most machine shops. You can do a version at home, but it’s often time consuming.

    • @JustMoparJoe
      @JustMoparJoe  6 місяців тому +1

      Hey Brad! I used this term because it wasn’t and X or J head. It has the smaller intake valve 1.88 versus the 2.02 of the performance head.

    you don't want the throat to be the same size as the bowl on the other side of the short turn. you need the bowl to be bigger. if it's a straight shot like yours, you take away the venturi effect and kill low lift flow, big time.

    • @JustMoparJoe
      @JustMoparJoe  6 місяців тому

      Thanks for sharing. I understand the principles there. My bowls are slightly wider than the throat. Ed is cutting new seats for larger intake valves and then blending them as needed in to the throats. I will show some better measurements next time.

    Cast iron porting. Ewww. After doing aluminum you’ll never go back.
    Good job keeping some meat and creating a trailing edge on the guide bosses.
    Can the leading edge be narrowed any? Appears to take up a bit of area…also kinda looks like it isn’t quite parallel to the port walls…?
    Don’t get too caught up in surface finish/sanding everything.
    Good job overall.

    • @JustMoparJoe
