@@myvidworld1One of my favorite songs by Chaka, sad to hear you never got credit for contributions to “Sweet Thing”. Your Bass playing definitely stands out though in a lot of their music. Anywho, I had a quick musical question- Would I be correct in calling that ending progression/outro a “Walkdown?”
Mr. Watson, I never knew you played guitar!......I'm a bass player, and I believe you to be THE most underrated bassist there ever was.......I first "discovered" you on the "Rufusized" album, as I believe Dennis Belfield played bass on the previous album......I enjoyed your clarification of the tune "Sweet Thing", as there's always a story when it comes to playing in a band, yes?......BTW, I didn't know you and Al McKay once played with the Whispers, and I'm sure there's some stories to be told while working with them......
Thanks for that Bobby! That song touches many souls indeed. What a great band; fronted by a young Chaka, which is a treat that comes around maybe once a generation (if that.)
Great to hear from you, as always, Bobby. It's a shame that you did not get your due at that time. There's that Cherokee proverb; " If it isn't good for everybody, it isn't good for anybody" I am heartened that good fortune and opportunities came your way, and thank you again for your music. Hot damn I’ve been planning on teaching this song to my guitar students. All the tutorial videos I’ve seen play that bridge section different and now I stumble on the master himself playing it, what a blessing
Thanks Mr Blackman , its amazing to me how chords come from sitting on the porch strumming on a guitar, to becoming the backdrop for a big hit record .. I feel blessed even though I did not get credit ~
Hey Bobby, that sequence is a signature part of the song WITHOUT QUESTION !!!!! So is the other modulation part without a doubt ! Michael Jackson, Jeffrey Osborne, Chaka Khan, George Duke are some of the artists I’ve written for so I know what I’m talking about. You and I played together on Distant Lover ( Seal in Red) at the studio with George Duke which was fun. Take care Bobby
Great hearing this story. I jammed with you at least one time about 53 or 54 years ago in Madison. All I remember was it was you, Tony and Larry Robertson playing his Hammond and a couple other people. I think it was either Larry or Reggie Lewis who brought me by. I think Gavin was there too. I used to see you guys jamming a lot and I was thrilled that y'all let me sit in, considering I hadn't learned a whole lot yet.
It's so cool hearing the back stories behind this song that I hear at least once a night while I'm at work on pandora..thnx for your musical contribution into the universe👍🏿🙏🏾👏🏿
Oh MAN! You got credit now. Great part! I have a lot of songs that have a nice A section but it is people like you who can do the change up and create the next place to go. Magic song, magic performance. Learning it now at 57 years old. YOU ROCK
It baffles me that Rufus & Chaka Khan have not been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, despite being nominated year after year. C'mon people -- let's give this band their due and get it done! Love ya, Bobby!

Great breakdown sir, a fan of your bass playing contributions. As a long time fan of the Rufus Chaka khan I’ve often wondered if you inspired the riffs of the synth bass playing along with your bass guitar in the song “Hollywood” , this is song one of my favorites by you and the band! 🙏🏽🙏🏽💙💪🏽peace n blessings glad to see you at it still and teaching
Wish he would play the song all the way through once on the guitar, I don't have the skill to put it together on my own lol. Thanks for the video, great to see.
This song is timeless. It is one of those songs that will live forever. It is so beautiful. And you most definitely should have gotten songwriter's credit if you wrote these chords you are showing here. That music that Rufus and Chaka did; man. Incredible!!!
4sho! 'Sweet Thing' is such a Beautiful Timeless Classic my all time favorite #1love song. It's crazy and funny the madness that goes on behind the scenes of things we have no idea about, that bring so much joy 2 others😃 But it's most definitely Appreciated! This is of course one of my favorite Rufus & CK songs and my band loves it too. It's such a shame for me to hear that even though we can be from the same culture, speak the same language and have endured much of the same oppression, we could fight about such things. Somebody was pretty insecure. Thank you so much for sharing your methodology of song writing and some of your history. You are truly a blessed and gifted man.♥
Thank you Jennifer, thank you for the comment, I keep reading it over and over - we cannot always know the consequences of our actions, thats why I always try to give and never cheat or take what is not mine.
@@myvidworld1 You are so welcome! You had the privilege of sharing the intimacy required to write a song with another human being. Your trust was broken, but from what I can see online, you are still holding it together. Most musicians have not been placed in the spotlight as you and the other members of Rufus have been. I think that perhaps we scrutinize ourselves and others continually and too harshly, as if to make sure we deserve to obtain our dreams, whether in the music industry or elsewhere. We sometimes don't posses the character required for where our talent can take us. We become afraid of almost anything, like age, weight, height, may I add, songwriting, etc. Please know that you are appreciated, even in this special way of communication to us strangers out here on UA-cam. Even though you didn't get the credit which you truly deserve. Thank you for writing those incredible parts that made the song so amazing. God bless you Bobby
unbelievably valuable knowledge being shared here. i wish more people who worked on records in the 70s were around to talk in depth like this about how the songs took shape, the original parts that were written, etc. sometimes when i'm learning tunes from this era i feel like i'm toiling around in obscurity, totally unable to catch up to and understand the musicians from back in the day, and it's great to hear you talk about the roots of this song being born out of innocently experimenting with your instrument and learning what sounds good to you, the same way we all do as young musicians.

Peace and greetings, thank you for this great video. There is one little part that you played that was the flavor I was missing...I don't know if the other guitarist who watched this caught it, it's very, very simple but you are the first I ever heard play it the way it is on the record. One thing, a request Please... re-record the 2nd half the phone is turned at an angle where we can't see what you are playing. Again thank you... I'm definitely subscribing.
This is one of my favorite songs ever, and a huge moment for me to get to hear this story, your playing and your voice. You have a very soulful way of playing and singing!
@@myvidworld1 I respectfully disagree. It’s maybe not that modern polished pop voice, but will work well in raw soul, funk, blues, rock and the list goes on. I agree that it mos def comes from the soul, though. That’s what I felt after hearing it. Love it! I personally discovered Chaka Khan through Prince, after that I discovered Rufus of course. And then slowly learned more about individual contributors to legendary soul and funk bands I cared about. Probably because of my 36 years of age, and being located in Norway, it took some time. I’ve tried learning this song after I saw Prince do it live on acoustic guitar. It was cool and a bit flashy and all. But this version has the right warmth to it that works really well also on acoustic guitar with my own voice. So I’m trying to nail this as soon as possible 😅. Thank you again!
Bobby, in the 70's i was learning bass and you were my mentor even though I never met you. Your playing was always so smooth and I wanted to play just like you. Now, all these years later I can say "thank you". I hope you read this because I want you to know that a lot of players out there i'm sure learned from you. Thank you, thank you!

Thank you for sharing your story! I've loved this song from day one, I'm still playing at 60 - getting ready to do a brand new thing and we'll be covering this. Much love for showing how YOU play it. :-)
Before watching this video I commented on one of your other videos saying what a great guitar player Tony Maiden was. Well now I know some of your stuff was in it ! Had to write this before Karma hits me... :-) Nice story this is. I like the way you told it in a humble matter. Cheers ! Loved Rufus, they do not make this kind of music anymore....
That's one of my favorite song by Chaka Khan. The melody is just Heavenly. Sorry that you did not credit for the beautiful melody you've created. You are truly a gifted musician and genius.!!! Thank you for that beautiful music! 🎵 🎶
Gotta be kidding when you say your NOT a guitar player, sweet open chords and phrasing riffs...........opening up the missing links......love your spirit and playing👍👍👍
Please PLEASE Bobby more stories. On what & how things came together, how things came to be. Just any & EVERYTHING about the good old days. THE STORIES. I wish everyone I grew up listening to & idolizing would tell road stories, about who wrote what, who did what etc. etc. etc..
I’ve done quite a lot of the same , putting finishing touches and effective arrangement techniques on songs , even creating entire vamps that leave everyones hair standing on end, only to be confronted with the same. It’s the exact thing we’ve been conditioned to view as “racism” when it involves different ethnicities but it’s not even that at all. It’s Capitis Diminutio Maximus, Medium or Minor, depending on the severity of loss being inflicted on you. It’s also Civilter Mortuus. That means you’re “civilly dead & have no right of claim whatsoever” in the law. This is COLORABLE LAW (as opposed to the true laws of this land, which are COMMON LAW) and it’s a breach of your god given sovereignty by a mere corporate policy. Both formal and informal are entirely fictitious in nature. Corporations only exist on paper. The purported authority of a CORPSE has no standing when compared to the living , breathing , sentient and divine being -a man -representing himself and enforcing the Constitution, the supreme law of the land. S/N I strongly believe that Civics and International Law & Estate should always be taught alongside of the science of Music. Not the “music business” so much but rather the real laws that they are bound to as much you are and wherein you are the superpower because of your status in law.
Hey Bobby love this but I hate to hear you didn't get your credits due these parts was the major part I the songs anyway you know I absolutely loved Rufus still info on til this day I'm still waiting on my Cadillac 🤣🤣😂🤣😂 LWilliams Love you 🥰

Bobby, I always thought that you were an amazingly funky bassist. Your bass playing helped to put Rufus on the chart. It's sad to know that this is part of what happened o Rufus along with some of the management issues. Please understand that it was your bass playing and that "funky ass drummer" Andre Fisher that help to make the Rufus sound. Your bass playing influenced so many bass players like myself. So don't worry the name BOBBY WATSON will not be forgotten!
I'm more of a hard rock/metal guitarist but after hearing this song on the radio I had to look up the history of it. Beautiful progression and modulation you wrote Mr Watson. Thanks for the video and how cool it must've been to have Chaka Khan write as you were creating, she's sensational

@@myvidworld1 Thank you
Before watching this video I commented on one of your other videos saying what a great guitar player Tony Maiden was. Well now I know some of your stuff was in it ! Had to write this before Karma hits me... :-) Nice story this is. I like the way you told it in a humble matter. Cheers ! Loved Rufus, they do not make this kind of music anymore....
Thank you so much ,, Kharma will be treating you well for making my day, reading your comment ~

Yeah Man ,,,,
This is such a great backstory. Thank you so much for sharing. 🙏🏾
That's one of my favorite song by Chaka Khan. The melody is just Heavenly. Sorry that you did not credit for the beautiful melody you've created. You are truly a gifted musician and genius.!!! Thank you for that beautiful music! 🎵 🎶
Thank you so much Karen, you just made my day 100% smiles ..
Gotta be kidding when you say your NOT a guitar player, sweet open chords and phrasing riffs...........opening up the missing links......love your spirit and playing👍👍👍
Mike, thank you man, very encouraging reading your comment ~
Timeless song mate.
Please PLEASE Bobby more stories. On what & how things came together, how things came to be. Just any & EVERYTHING about the good old days. THE STORIES. I wish everyone I grew up listening to & idolizing would tell road stories, about who wrote what, who did what etc. etc. etc..
OK, I've been lazy about it, but I will do some more Rufus Chaka (inside) stories soon, stand by
@@myvidworld1 Cool 👌🏾
Sheer dopeness.
Great story Bobby.
Man, thanks Beau, I am loving telling some inside stories that people have no idea about
Thanks Bobby, I’m a witness to everything you’ve stated, and the truth always comes out in the end.
@@louisfischer997 Thanks my life long friend ~
I’ve done quite a lot of the same , putting finishing touches and effective arrangement techniques
on songs , even creating entire vamps that leave everyones hair standing on end, only to be confronted with the same.
It’s the exact thing we’ve been conditioned to view as “racism”
when it involves different ethnicities but it’s not even that at all.
It’s Capitis Diminutio Maximus, Medium or Minor,
depending on the severity of loss being inflicted on you.
I love these inside stories man! How did you like working with George Duke? Also did you ever meet the great Rod Temperton?
Hey Bobby love this but I hate to hear you didn't get your credits due these parts was the major part I the songs anyway you know I absolutely loved Rufus still info on til this day I'm still waiting on my Cadillac 🤣🤣😂🤣😂 LWilliams Love you 🥰
without the modulation n open chords sweet thing wouldnt sound the way it is..in essence, you created the flow of the song..great job Sir.
A Great Story Bobby,You are Great Soul bro! Ray Parker jr. have similar story karma is a bitch!! Now I know the real story,as a guitarist myself You Definitely wrote the whole tune the main parts of the song ,You a Good Soul,Many more Blessings to You BW and keep the stories coming, or write a book of your journeys as a Musician The world would like to hear your incredible stories!🙏🏾❤️🎸😎

I love seeing these behind the music breakdowns especially from legendary musicians. And yes, karma will work it out
