Did Chaka Khan make a Mistake
Переглядів 8 тис.Рік тому
A short story about the night that Chaka's Husband got into trouble by disrupting the crew that were Mixing the "Ask Rufus" album .. Chaka took his side instead of the guys who were working ~ He did get beat up, but was her reaction (ultimatum) too extreme ? Andre Fischer "Rufus Drummer" punched him a few times, raised a few bumps on his face & head. Andre went on to become a successful Produce...

Rufus & Chaka Bobby Watson remake of Once U Get Started
Переглядів 3,7 тис.2 роки тому
Playing Bass & Guitar on this sparse track, I had fun re- creating the first single released after I joined the band Rufus in Fall of 1973'. Tony Maiden & I wrote the music for the original version, while Gavin Christopher wrote the lyrics .. I added a little funk intro to the original and my friend "Steve Harvey" did drum and synth parts - I did all the guitars and Bass stuff ...
Rufus & Chaka "Sweet thing controversy"
Переглядів 15 тис.2 роки тому
All these years everyone thinks that the tune "Sweet Thing" was written by Chaka Khan and Tony Maiden, but for the 4 guys who were in the recording studio on that day, they know better. There is no bitterness at the end of this story, just a lot of Love and thankfulness to my brother Tony Maiden whom I love and wish I could help these days, but his life is in "reap what you sow" Mode right now !!

Bobby Watson Sold Ferrari Ordered Tesla ~

After a year of driving the 348 on weekends and Loving it, the car started to need "Very Costly Repairs" I would have been paying almost what I paid for the car to service it for a few more years of carefree driving, So I went with the advice of my fellow "Rufus" bandmate David "Hawk" Wolinski and test drove and ordered a Tesla Model 3 ~ Turned out well because I got in just in time to order on...

Much respect for Quincy. But I STILL MISS ROGER TROUTMAN... how about you Bobby Watson? Hope you and your girls are doing well!! Mahnnnn... feels like it's been about a decade...hope you're still working and doing something with all of those tunes you and Harvey composed together. Peace 🙏🏼 Good you've got your behinder back into church!!😅
Absolutely Brilliant!
What a Great Association to have with Quincy Jones!
Chaka Should have Forgiven Andre... Ask Rufus is an Amazing Album!
Absolutely!
Mr. Bobby Watson, I am a die hard fan of Rufus and Chaka Khan's music. You bet that we, your fans, would come out and support you and the guys. I have every album that you recorded, and this phenomenal band provided the canvas and the launching pad for one of the greatest vocal stylists on the planet. Keep me posted. 😊
i LOVE bobby watson & the iconic legend as well as insider he is has me baffled considerin ‘off the wall’ b4 ‘ben.’ not as large, big nonetheless. plus 3 mo
2:26 wasnt Michael’s 1st
I stand corrected, "Got to be there" was Michael's first solo album? Thnx Mr. Frederick
Mr. Watson during your period of time working with Quincy Jones on the MJ sessions, how much collaboration if any did you have with Toto and Louis Johnson who were prominent in those Off The Wall and Thriller albums?
I grew up in the same neighborhood w Lewis & George Johnson, they played some talent shows with Tony Maiden (Rufus guitarist) & myself, I did not like Lewis cause he was so good, always playing some cool licks, but Tony & I always won the shows because we had a better drummer than them ,,,,,
@ Wow I didn’t realize y’all grew up in the same neighborhood. What player or sounds influenced you the most when you were learning how to play bass guitar?
Bobby, you have been my favorite bass player since I was a kid in detroit just leaning to play....ur fell , note choices and groove are impeccable...thank you for all those banging jam from back in the day...be well my brother.
What's your favorite amps and effects ✊🏾
Man I am old school with a capitol "O", I have an old 360 acoustic bass amp from 1967', but recently bought a little 2 X 10 cab made by "Markbass" which I can carry around for local stuff much easier than that 360 refrigerator .. No pedals , but I do have a tuner in my iPhone ...
Thanks Mr. Watson
what am i missing the bass leak amazing! bobby
Yessssir, Thank you !
I’m not sure if Bobby Watson realises how important that lick in the second verse of Rock with you is gold to us bass players. If that lick is not played when covering that song on gigs, the bass player gets that “ you don’t really know the part look” from the rest of the band.
Masterjam's Live In Me, Any Love and Heaven Bound are my favorites.
I so appreciate sharing these stories as they are an added treasure for diehard Rufus fans!
I'm in my late 50s I decided to go for the Tesla model Y as I'm getting too old to be crawling into any sedan 😀
Goodness, I did not know you were involved with Renée and Angela Funny, I was analyzing the tracks yesterday just listening to every part learning
love the album Masterjam
Bobby Watson!!! Master Storyteller!!! You are the very best and I miss our one on one conversations…
Bobby Watson!!! Bassist Extraordinaire!!! I miss talking with you about everything - like I said before, if you ever decide to write that book I’d love to be your editor and proofreader (I’d do it in a heartbeat)… seeing you talk about these things on video might actually be better though! Take care and stay cool… Tony Spruill
Miss you man, its been way too long !!! and you are hired for the book Tony ~
Hey Bobby, I just seeked out that 1972 High Voltage album you talked about and it's really great! It can be found here on UA-cam (individual tracks), or the whole album can be found on Spotify. Enjoy y'all!! 🙂
Bobby. We love Rufus. What a show it will be!
Rock with you, is one of my favorite tracks off that album
Thank you so much ,,,, I love it too
Thanks so much Bobby. Don't forget when you do these, come into the light so we can see your face!😁😉
Haha, Haha, I just noticed that Cornelius ,, Ill try to do better on the next little shoot ,, I need a director !
Thank you for the stories of those days. Those days are gone for ever and we appreciate players like you to remind us of them glory days. Mad respect!
Thank you Daniel ~
Thanks for sharing your memories. Amazing!!!
Good to hear MORE MUSICAL STORIES from Mr. Watson!! WE NEED MORE STORIES!
bassist from Miami 64 years old followed your grooves foundational in the Pocket rhythmic yet technical bass Patterns for years... thanks for making this video ... 1 . question when working with Quincy or other artist producers, did you have to read charts but also how much freedom to create your bass Patterns or the best of both worlds?
alright fellow bassist, I am not a very good chart reader (Notation no!) (Chord sheets yes), I can follow ,, Rod Temperton made easy chord charts like scribbling on a napkin, most producers just want tunes to feel good ,, so thats my only thing I try to bring (lock w the drums) and a little bit of melodic inserts here & there
great stories my brother
yo! bobby just subscribe to your channel. i use to sing with the science band at pickford live house in tokyo, japan. you use to be a regular band in the early 90's. we had many nights drinking you under the table. i even help put you in a car cap a few times. hope all is well
Man, take me back to the fun days Brother Teddy, hope you are good man,,,,, Pickford was my favorite hang,
Man your the man.I love y'all 🎵 I have One of your vinyls in the create that came out in 1977 the one that has Everlasting Love I forgot the title
Ask Rufus
@timothyrollins3856 Thanks man 👍
"Ask Rufus" thanks Mr. Rollins ~
Hey man! That’s really cool that you played on those Michael Jackson tracks! And that must have been the Ferrari you were in when I met you on 56th Street. Peace.
thats the one !! haha
Thank you for the 'Q' stories. I love hearing all about your musical career.
Thanks Mr. Bobby Watson That was a fantastic story that you just shared. Actually I totally appreciate all of your stories and experiences, they are priceless!!! Ps. If you decide to put your life’s experiences into a book i would buy it aswell as your other followers would!!! You are a Solid Dude!!!
Any Love is a BANGER Keep the chats coming, love these!!
Bobby, you know how much I talk about Masterjam. Off The Wall and Masterjam are both in my top 5. Quincy, Maurice White, Arif Mardin, George Duke produced albums with zero filler tracks. As if every note mattered. In interviews, Quincy claimed he didn’t think about money when it came to his production process. Judging from what you said, he aimed for what sounded commercially appealing to record buyers. You guys sounded so good on that album. I’d like to hear about the cover photo of y’all running down that street lol. I even love the music videos for Do You Love What You Feel and Masterjam. You’re wearing a Dodgers jersey (who just obliterated my Yankees lol). Thank you for everything Bobby.
yeah man, I caught a foul ball at Yankee Stadium back in 74' - That cover shot was all staged after we had drank about 8 bottles of wine ... then it was time to shoot a photo for the album cover (thats why you can see the crazy smiles everybody had on their faces)
@myvidworld1 yes and it was one of those covers that folded open. The inner cover had individual photos of each of you with your instrument and an even bigger photo of Quincy! Lol. Always wondered if he had final say when it came to songs and album cover design or did you guys get a vote? And I'm pretty sure it went platinum!
@@chetperry3384I wore that gold album out!
Lady In My Life was on Thriller
Yes, thats right , Quincy kept tracks (finished and unfinished) in a box (like chocolates) and put em in where they were needed .. I'm sure Lady in my life was pushed aside for "Off The Wall" album,,, and used later on Thriller ,,, I wish I could go to the record company and ask them to let me go through tapes and find tunes I played on and do mixes with my bass included ~ "Just Once" was so Funky as a ballad ~
@ Much respect to you big bro. Off The Wall is my favorite MJ album. I was a kid when it came out, but my older sister bought it. I remember them playing the whole album at one of our family functions. Hell, I might go play it right now 🤷🏽♂️😂
Appreciate you sharing this story and this takes you back, the details and parts very distinctive and how this all plays out, compartment style for radio format
Always a pleasure listening to your videos Bobby. I've had Master Jam in my collection since 1979 and it still remains in my collection with the album cover being a bit tattered through the years because I've played the album to death. However, it indeed was a great album. So happy that you had the opportunity to work with Quincy to produce one of the greatest albums of our day. Please keep these stories coming, as they are priceless. Hoping that you will one day decide to write a book about your time with Rufus. Enjoy the upcoming Holiday Season!!
Robin, I have heard this from other people too, who look at my little videos, I may take your advice and start collecting some stories for a book idea, I certainly have the time now !!!! Thank you for the suggestion ~
@@myvidworld1 My pleasure Bobby, you have a wonderful talent for keeping people engrossed and entertained. I've loved Rufus from day one and these stories would be a fantastic idea for a book. Please consider it.
I was checking the "personnel" on the Wikipedia entry for Masterjam and notice you, Bobby Watson, have no wikipedia entry of your work. You should fix that. Google this : "Create A Wikipedia Page For An Artist - Music Gateway"
"Any love" was/is ridiculous!!! That musical arrangement was sick and Chaka vocals are insane. It should have been released as a single after "Do you love what you feel." Thanks for going back down memory lane giving us some insight about your incredible career.
@@ronaldw548 I'd love it if he made videos where he (a) explains how Hawk would bring his songs to the band and how they arranged, learned and rehearsed their parts (b) using his bass, demonstrate the bass parts to those tunes. Showing how he and JR locked on those grooves and rhythm arrangements.
Man Thank you for sharing these Memories with us! These stories are like food for the mind. Sort of makes us all relive what you went through. You were so very fortunate to play on the Michael songs! What an amazing treat. And just think....if it wasn't for you master jam may have ended up as a master mess LoL. I mean That joint was Poppin man! anyway You actually got the Q to include you in a trio of which John and Hawk went on to Quite a road of musical hit records as a solid nucleus. Hey Bruh, at least Quincy didn't have to worry about MJ driving drunk Harrr. I wonder where the "Q' thought they might end up? We all can use some extra entertainment where we can get it in right about now. Well thank you so much Bobby for brightening up my week. Oh hey don't feel bad about the drinking man I got 15 years off of Alcohol so we have something else in common too! Please keep the stories coming Sir!!
@@waynefoote3781 The group Slave was huge in Ohio.
@@bkhan9090 Yes...I was the lead Singer and lived there for a year. It was a great experience. We weren't lucky enough to have the Great Q produce us though.
Chaka recorded with Q in 1978 on Stuff Like That. Masterjam came out in 1979, the year I graduated from high school. I'm glad you are back with your stories. Any Love is fire
Yes! I remembered that the story was that Chaka and Quincy were on a flight together, and he asked her to sing on the album. "Stuff Like That" went on to win a Grammy.
"Any Love That You Feel, Is Real" one of my favorite tunes by Rufus ~
Brah….you are the man. Love your tone and playing style. You are the top of my bass playlist recently. Much love to you bruddah❤!
We lost Quincy Jones. He produced Streetplayer, I think. Imho, that is the best album Rufus did. Live In Me, Heaven Bound, the whole album is perfection.
Andre is one of my favorite funk drummers. He played very different and very funky. That first tom fill Andre plays near the beginning of Sweet Thing is not something you ever hear in a ballad yet it worked so good! No disrespect but Ask Rufus was the last great Rufus album. I wish Chaka & Andre could’ve worked through it. I saw a live video of Everlasting Love and I noticed Jeff Porcaro on drums. Did he do the Ask Rufus tour? Was he asked to join Rufus?
Please get the band back together!
That's not Bobby
Bobby, did you watch the Rock and Roll HOF show. Kool showed out and about time. You stay well.
