Nice video and beautiful art. I am also from 1989. I think videogames gained a museological significance for us. It is a material patrimony at the same time it is immaterial. The reason that makes us admire this object as art is because it brings the sweetest memories of our childhoods. Every kid that managed to have a game boy around the globe is now a grown-up with a busy daily life. But when we see an object like that, everything comes back again... and we smile.

Modding game consoles may seem a bit like butchering, but I like to think of it as giving an old piece a new character or even a new life. Hardware becomes outdated, but we can tweak some parts to make it more appealing to today's standards (or make it more unique) while preserving the core experience. And the more time and effort you put into the work, the more substantial this piece of hardware becomes. I've modded my old GBA, I've modded two sad GBAs from Japan, just for the fun of it. It felt really good.

I like how he openly admits he doesn't know which color scheme he's going to go with until the shell is printed out and he physically sees the buttons and shells together. Most people think everything should be planned right from the start but just start and let the creativity flow!

Plastic Surgery & Tattoos...for your Gameboy
jokes aside I've always been really interested in the art of these modded gameboy for a few years now anyways so its cool to hear an inside take from someone who does it for a living and really loves the artistic aspect of it, over the last few years I have had a hobby of buying systems and controllers knowing they are broken and enjoying the process of fixing (or attempting to fix in many cases) broken systems. I fixed a broken Nintendo Switch controller by getting a little screwdriver and simply cleaning the inside spills out and screwing it all back together and then with a wired HORI controller as well. I am currently working on fixing and modding a GBA original that is function but missing just a back battery component and has some stickiness behind the buttons which will be an easy fix. I then have a original red 3DS with some really busted up shoulder buttons and scraped as well as a dead battery and questionable insides. I will start buy replacing the battery and getting a charger to see if it works at all and then if needed check out the inside components for potential inside liquid damage and then if I can get it up and running will replace the buttons. Lastly I have a PSP Slim with no battery and but has an AS charger and turns on but the screen is always black. It makes all the sounds when you turn it on so I assume the screen is either loose or totally busted. Its just fun taking broken things and fixing them and having that satisfaction. Modding though is something I haven't ventured into much of unless you consider adding a hard plastic blue case that snaps onto my switch along with some colorful joystick grippers modding. Personally I think thats more of accessorizing but if I fuse the two together I think modding for certain consoles, especially the gameboy would be fairly easy. Now printing custom shells, the designs, and all that is a bigger deal. I really like the idea of the book though even if I think I could figure out the majority of the modding basics on my own I haven't soldered anything since high school tech class and also I think it would be a really nice coffee table shelf for inspiration. Again the artistic side of modding is what really struck me in this video and what has appealed to me with the modding scene on instagram I have seen over the last few years. Great video and glad to see you shaving up and saving up. Bless.

To be honest, this is nice. Nintendo built the Gameboy to last and having these types of companies around sure does give you that exclusivity feeling of your once special Gameboy. I find this interesting as they didnt rip the guts out, but rather kept them intact and upgraded them. They didn't replacing it with a Raspberry Pi and loaded a billion games on it, but rather upgraded the challenging problem all GameBoy users had. While they did have many iterations of the GameBoy, this does give you back that personal attachment, so good on them.

Something that the OG let you do is pretty much change every single piece to reflect the final user, from the color of the case, to the buttons, even the color of the screen!
Since is so basic, at the same time is what let you have all this options.
The moment you need color for playing games, some details get lost (maybe in the future, the GBC, GBA and DS mods could use some type of screen filter to keep the color and the style of the user, but who knows)
