My dad helped work on this film. Most of it was filmed in the small town in Nebraska Techumseh. His roll wasnt credited and I was only 6 years old when it was released.

Part of it was also filmed in the small town in Ontario that I lived in as a kid. I remember seeing Kris Kristofferson going down the Main Street of town.

I'm pretty sure they were the same ones. There were exactly two prototypes built for the Blue Thunder movie and the TV series, and I think afterward they painted them black and used them for the 1987 Amerika miniseries.

And that's what happened to the USSR, divided into different states, with American economic advisors back in the 90s and now several of them filled with American bases.

It’s almost like this story is an alternate history reverse of what was eventually going to happen in real life, considering that politically savvy people had some foresight even back then in the 80s to get a good idea of what was about to happen even though most people could never guess what was about to happen, maybe they just took the best case scenario for America winning the soon to end Cold War and reversed it to an alternate world worst case scenario to show people what that world would probably look like if things had happened the other way around.

Thanks for the video. I remember the fuss when the ads were shown on tv. Wasn't able to watch it, but I don't think how Russia was able to over come/occupy the U.S. was ever explained.

If I remember correctly, The filmmakers actually wrote up an explanation involving some kind of special EMP weapon deployed as an alternative to nuclear warfare by the Soviets to fry the United States entire power grid which in the process shut down all their tanks, battleships, Aircraft carriers, air fighters, combat vehicles of any kind, etc. so badly that it would take the Americans years to recover. As a result the US was rendered so helpless that they were not even able to fire their warheads in retaliation, but the writer decided not to put that into the mini series in order to keep it a mystery so the audience can speculate for them selves about what really happened that led to America becoming a Soviet Satellite Nation.(fun fact The show was meant to be an allegory about what people in Eastern Europe we’re having to go through at the time by making it more relatable to Americans by showing them what it would feel like if they had to go through the same thing) The closest we get to an explanation in the miniseries about what happened is a kind of “Manchurian candidate” backstory in which both the Republican and Democrat front runners of that then future of 1988 election were both American informants for the Soviets as well as Soviet sleeper agents to a sure that no matter which party won soviet victory in the cold war would finally be assured to which then they they could then begin a coup in which all the people in government and military who may be a potential threat with then be removed with loyal Soviet operatives so that the Soviets could then invade the United States with The executive legislative and judicial branches all pacified and The Army Navy Air Force and Marines all forced to stand down with anyone who refused been purged. There’s a bit of a continuity error by saying that it’s set 10 years after the take over but I think that might’ve been a mistake by the Writers part because the soonest the coup could’ve had a realistic chance of succeeding at all according to the shell seems to imply that the year would have been in 1989 (ironically the year that the Berlin Wall would have come down had it not been for The Soviets being emboldened by the resounding success of the coup) because, Remember this show is set in the then future of 1997 and at one part Kris Kristofferson character watches some old archival footage on a videotape of the 1988 election that implies that the coup The following year in 1989. If the if the Soviet EMP weapon is still considered canon (and I’ll let you be the judge of that whether it is or not) then that combined with the sleeper agents posing as political candidates starts to paint a more understandable picture of how old the coup went so well. So yeah that’s basically it, The show was meant to be an allegory of what it was like to live in eastern Europe in a Soviet satellite country they showing Americans what it would look like if the United States of America was it self a Soviet satellite nation, but the miniseries Amerika wasn’t the only work of speculative fiction to use allegory about what countries afflicted by Soviet oppression or having to go through. A few years earlier another Filmmaker used a very similar idea with his movie Red Dawn which was intended as an antiwar metaphor for the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan by showing apathetic Americans in the me generation teen audience what the Afghan people were having to go through by showing them a similar scenario that hits close to home. The Wolverines are meant to be an American allegory for the mujahedin anti-Soviet resistance in Afghanistan The director even add some moral grayness by not only showing us the horrors of war but also how war dehumanizes both sides going as far as to show The teen protagonists slowly become more brutal and bloodthirsty the more and more desperate they are to survive over the course of the film. One of the main themes of the film is what happens when the innocence of youth is destroyed by the all consuming bloodbath that is war as well as some subtle references to the Orwellian nightmare 1984, the very year this film came out and was presumably set in as well as making the film’s enemy be the Soviets who were the main inspiration for the fictional totalitarian government in Orwell‘s novel.

EMP is correct. Three actually. However, none of that would have affected nuclear submarines or other assets worldwide.

I would only watch this series purely for its cheesiness factor, for some cosy 80s TV nostalgia, the great cast and out of genuine curiousity and intrigue. It otherwise seems like a terrible, cringey plot and a corny cliche of more jingoistic, chest-thumping, Cold War, Anti-Reds propaganda. Amazing how so many people swallowed this type of shit in those days and many still do!

Personally, I am NOT impressed with the "Amerika" mini-series from 1987 because I found it to be nothing but pure right-wing propaganda in order to sell the BIG JOKE of an era called the Cold War. At least, I am glad that it didn't achieve the status of both popularity and ratings of the "ROOTS" mini-series back in the mid-1970's.
