I have this episode on DVD as part of THE PRICE IS RIGHT DVD SET 26 PRICELESS EPISODES!! SPECIAL TRIBUTES TO BILL CULLEN DON PARDO MARK GOODSON & BILL TODMAN BOB BARKER DENNIS JAMES TOM KENNEDY JOHNNY OLSON & ROD RODDY!!
In the "Greatest TV Games Shows" all the Game Show host/hostess said Bill Cullen was the best. His timing was perfect, dealing with the contestants was like they were old friends. And he knew how to work the audience. They all said he was the best.
I was reading a book about early television, and there was a set shot of the original "Price Is Right". On it, host Bill Cullen and his hostess were unaware a dog was actually on the set. Hilarious!
Bill had a radio show that ended a half hour before this program began. He had to rush from NBC to the Colonial Theater to do this show live. He had a stand-in who did the rehearsals. The small cards in Bill's hands guided him through the show.
+David Gibson Apparently it wasn't all that stressful for Bill. He would often have 15-20 minutes to spare. They wouldn't let him on stage until five minutes before air time. Bill would smoke a cigarette and chat with the crew.
He sure was busy during this period of time. In addition to doing this show, he was also a regular panelist on "I've Got a Secret", another great show produced by Goodson and Todman for another network.
Because it was more modest in its prizes AND because of the trustworthiness and good reputation of Bill Cullen and Goodson-Todman the show continued on even though almost all game shows from the era were cancelled because of the quiz scandals.
Just saw this episode of the The Price Is Right , didn’t realize the Price is Right was that old, since 1956 evidently. Only three hosts in the span of 67 years which is impressive. Most game shows are lucky to last this long. To this day, Price is still on. At the 6:15 mark in the video, pricing game “Cullen’s Olde Antique Shoppe,” where Mrs. Groupe had to pick out the price that she thinks was worth $1,800 ie. the most expensive one. Can I say that pricing game is the ancestor to todays pricing game “Most Expensive” which is still played on today’s version of The Price is Right. In the pricing game “Most Expensive” on Today’s price is right, the contestant shown three prizes, the contestant’s job is to pick the prize that they think is most expensive one. If the contestant chooses the prize that is the most expensive, the contestant wins all three prizes, if not the contestant doesn’t win anything. In watching the episode of the Cullen hosted Price is Right, I noticed the prizes that version of Price were more elaborate and outlandish than today’s Price is Right. Of course on todays Price, they still give away cars and trips and furniture. I mean back then on the Cullen version they gave away houses, shares of stocks and bonds, a Ferris wheel, even business franchises in some episodes. On Today’s Price is Right, i noticed the prizes are not as elaborate or expensive as back on old price is right of yesteryear. Were the game show budgets, different back then.
The guy at the end of the contestant row looks like Rocky Marciano the only heavyweight champion of the world to never be defeated. Retired heavy weight Champion with out ever losing a fight
The Top 5 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending January 18, 1960: 1) "Running Bear" Johnny Preston 2) "Why" Frankie Avalon 3) "El Paso" Marty Robbins 4) "The Big Hurt" Miss Toni Fisher 5) "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans" Freddie Cannon
This episode was from 1960, because the NBC TV Presents logo was from 1948 and the NBC Kinescope logo was from 1953, and the notes G-E-C was used at the end of every radio show from the 1930’s right up to the 1950’s.
Every time I watch videos like this it gets me closer to Jesus cause if you keep going back in history then you end up to the beginning !!!! 😲 Wow !!! It just makes Jesus's generation more real every time
I just imagine this version returning, every Saturday evening on CBS, with a very good host (male of female) and really expensive prizes like cars, boats, jewelry, trips, and all other kinds of extravagant prizes, with returning champions, as well as the home viewer showcases or the sweepstakes. It would be really awesome!
Iwonder if any viewer back then saw the irony of the trip[ in the showcase to Rome came at almost the exact same time as the Summer Olympics which were in Rome.
@@radband01 , thank you for bothering to write a reply to my question. I think you've misunderstood my question: if there is dot-crawl in this, it is not something that would be mistaken as a signal that a break was coming up.
It is regrettable that the color videotapes of the original "TPIR" were wiped, but I believe that NBC had a policy of erasing tapes so they could be used for other shows.
@@davidcouch6514 J. Davis is correct. Cullen could serve in the Armed forces because he had childhood polio. He probably still wore a leg brace. Polio damaged the nerves and made the afflicted areas week. I did notice that one of his legs was very stiff which was difficult to catch because the networks were so good at helping hide his affection. A big shout out to the Rothschilds!!
Once again, great hosting job by Mr. Cullen! And the contestants were very nice and well-dressed.

Mrs. Spencer's 1960 winnings would be equal to $ 393,750.05 in 2019.
I just Googled it, it would be $473,553.00 in 2023

20 carats? An extra in a film? Holy moly! What awesome prizes!!😮❤

Is it too late to send in my guess on the 1960 showcase?
Fortune favors the bold.
Wonder if the postal workers would know what zone 46 meant
This program has been on for a very long long long time, and the show still on the air on CBS.
It would have been cool to see it "In Living Color on NBC".
I like this verson OF TPIR
I have to watch Exodus again and see if I could spot Mrs Spencer
BILL CULLEN IS MY FAVORITE HOST
This version of Classic Price deserves a primetime comeback.

the song at the end is called "Bamblina"
I never knew there was a PIR without Bob Barker. Gun fact Bob was kin to the famous criminal family with the same sir name. Truth 💯 FACTS
19:16 That camera is HUGE!!!!!!!!
Those cameras were indeed quite huge. They were made by RCA Corporation, NBC's parent company at the time.
I want that bar at my house. It would look great on my bamboo front porch.
Hard to believe that they had to estimate the total showcase price down to the penny! And sometimes there were ties!
My parents had a 1965 Mercury Monterey convertible.
Dorothy Lamour won one for an audience member on the ABC version--it moved there in 1963, and added a celebrity player to the pane.
"What does your husband do?".......😮...sign of the times
The good ole days
That’s one heck of an accent on Mrs Spencer. I live in NC and have never heard one quite like it. 😅
Haha yes, You'd not only need to go to, but to time travel to..to hear that accent.
I like how the jewelry is presented :)
with Don Pardo as the announcer at the open of the show..
Don was one of the finest broadcast announcers in the business.
25:26 - Plug for "You Bet Your Life" starring Groucho Marx
I wonder how many people are sending in post marked post cards to win that sweet 1960 car
Iwonder if any viewer back then saw the irony of the trip[ in the showcase to Rome came at almost the exact same time as the Summer Olympics which were in Rome.
What does your husband do? Try that today 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Interesting how the women are usually asked what their husbands do for a living.
Hard to tell after UA-cam compression-is there dot crawl in this kinescope film, from which the chrominance signal could be reconstructed?
It was a signal for the technician at the local affiliate to prepare for a commercial break.

I wonder how much that Mercury cost brand new in 2023!!
Wisk just recently retired from market.
Wisk had been on the market since the.mid 50's, but didn't become a major brand until coining the slogan "Ring Around The Collar!"
I imagine the first commercial was for Imperial Margarine.
Less than $.50 cents a pound for a front .25 of beef.
my god the models have close on
Wisk and Dove were Lever Brothers. Dove still is.
wow this version is super different from the Bob era to present version
It got revamped. Same with Match Game and Password.
I can not believe she didn't pick the vase ... Smh women were in the dark those days
Fools
Too bad all the color videotapes of this show were erased. This is still a great show.
It is regrettable that the color videotapes of the original "TPIR" were wiped, but I believe that NBC had a policy of erasing tapes so they could be used for other shows.
I wonder how much Ms. Spencer ultimately won, she has at least $61,191 (in 1960 dollars).
Not much more...the record for this version came in the summer of 1963, when a man won $76,000 of merchandise before being beaten.
HIGHER!!! HIGHER!!!
Is it just me or does the closing music sound like the same music in Homer Simpson’s land of chocolate daydream?
49 cents/lb. for the beef, not bad!

12 yrs later MERCHANT was born 20 yrs later I was born 😢
Bill Cullen had a severe disability in one leg and camera work and stage logistics worked around the condition.
Always so upbeat and nice. R.I. P.
What was his disability? Yes, I always liked him. Such a pleasant smile.
@@ToniHunterOne he lost a leg in Combat I think.
He survived a childhood bout with polio that left him with significant physical limitations for the rest of his life..google

Was this de first or second episode?
Neither, the show had been on since 1956.
Will the side of beef fit in the "seven-day meat keeper"?
You know Barker wouldn't go for that piece of beef.
He went for a piece of Dian instead

90 dollars?!?? For a whole kitchen ffs
The bid was for the 185 pounds of beef. The winner of that bidding won the kitchen.
The champ would have had it with her $81.

At least we know that some things haven't changed with this show...lol

Matt Damon? lol.. j/k
