Can't believe this actually worked! My XPS 15 9500 was constantly running with fans on - even on idle. And temps were always around 59 C°. I used a brush and PC duster spray to clean all the dust from the fans and then used alcoholic wipes (from the drugstore!) to clear and renew the thermal paste. I also bought those Blue thermal stickers because I thought you had added them yourself but apparently those come with the laptop already so I just left them untouched. I put the thermal paste in an 'X' shape because I saw somewhere that this gives the best distribution. Now I've turned the laptop back on and so far the fans haven't turned on even once and coretemp is reporting around 41 - 42 C° - that's a huge difference! Thanks
I just repasted my XPS 15, I desided to put thermal pads on top of the heat sink connecting it to the chassis. It makes the backside of the laptop hot under lead, but man this baby has stamina now💪🏼
Thanks man this is great stuff. Very useful. I must say I think you come off as very humble. I would lean into that. People trust earnestness. Good luck on your journey.
Thanks for the tips! I went with the first fix by greatly lowering the power of my laptop as it's way over powered for what I really need it for! My BatteryBar is telling me that I can get 16 hours plus with my current state and usage! That is AWESOME! BTW, I have the Dell XPS 17" (9700) I just got in the mail three days ago! I'm loving it! Where has this been all my life?!?! LMFAO!!!
When I applied the thermal paste I actually spread it across the CPU and GPU with a Q tip and then put the hewtsi k on. I didn't do it like you did. And I also used Coolermaster Thermal Paste... I installed the 970 Evo Plus 1tb today because I was having issues with the stock Toshiba ssd, and there is no difference at all with the Samsung ssd.... 😮
Good video. But one information is missing. I want to buy some thermal pads. What is the recommended thickness. They seem to have them in different sizes, from 0.5 up to 4.5mm thickness. Or should we recover the ones that came with the laptop? What about the one that is used for the SSD? What thickness?
I tried the Intel XTU but the under volt is greyed out on it and I’m not messing around with the Bios. I have now got a Topmate C11 cooler and it’s great. My laptop felt roasting hot before, but now it remains cool 😁.

My XPS 9560 is 4 years old. But when I ran Aida, the CPU still operated at 2.5Ghz (max) and temperature reached only 66oC. Should I repaste the thermal? I have Arctic MX-4 on hand, but am afraid that I can make the XPS worse than it is at the moment. Pls advise. Tks.
Well, Dell old ones have poor thermal design. I reapplied thermal paste and it did improve the performance, but not upto the expectations. I'm thinking of moving towards a PC.
The biggest thing you can do is undervolt the Dell using a tool like Throttlestop. Clean the fan and you can repaste if you like. I turn off turbo and undervolt with my 9560 and it helps. The VRMs are the biggest problem.
Did you check if all BIOS settings are properly set? I would try resetting the BIOS settings. Otherwise, I can't think of any other reason why it does that except something is wrong with the CPU itself.
Yep I updated all drivers, bios etc. Reset bios settings. The only thing that worked was when I used throttle stop program and disabled BD_PROC HOT Then my clock speed was normal. But everytime I turn on laptop from shutdown /close the throttle stop program, it resets itself and gets stuck at 0.78Ghz! Annoying!
Can you try these steps. 1. Shut down 2. unplugg/remove the battery 3. wait for some time, 1 minute in my case 4. reconnect/ reinsert battery 5. start machine again 6. see the cpu running at normal speed again. Ref: superuser.com/questions/1241844/cpu-is-stuck-at-its-minimal-frequency
Yeah I already knew about this method cos I was researching a lot. That’s my Plan of action, but I’m waiting for my iFixit kit to arrive. In the meanwhile wanted to get some technical understanding of why this occured so thought to ask you!
Yeah, true. I should do it. And anyway, even though my heating got a bit better, there were some issues with some apps draining and I couldn't figure out why. So I reset the Windows and now it's better than ever!
