Is "Black Leather Jackets" worth a re-watch or leave it in the Zone?
Leave it in the zone
Yes this episode is bad, but I like the and I find it worth rewatching
It's definitely skippable, but you have to admire their creativity.
Well the fact that Walter only spent about 5 minutes talking about it says a lot!😂

Aliens who come to earth and pretend to be 50s greasers
I'll admit i could see a comedy like that working
So could I!!
@@troperhghar9898 and immediately I think of Tim Robinson going: “That’s a nice motorcycle!”
@@troperhghar9898 aliens, seeing our television transmissions, try to sneak onto earth and subversively conquer us. Unfortunately the television shows they watched were several decades old, so they act like they’re in the 50’s. They also think that humans are too primitive to figure out their obvious disguises, so they believe their mission is a runaway success when they actually are mocked at every turn
Happy Days did something like that with The Fonz
RIP John Lasell who died today. He played John Wilkes Booth in an episode of TTZ.
I once saw this episode on tv late at night when I was 5. Nightmares of black leather for a month.
Aliens in leather jackets.
Even in 2024 I'll give Earl points for originality. Even if it's a silly concept.
“Black Leather Jacket” is not one of the Twilight Zone highlights, but I like the episode and I was really shocked with the twist that sheriff was one of the aliens
Agreed. I did think that was a good twist.
Given that they already have sleeper agents in place, you have to ask what was the point of having the teenagers generate suspicion?
The plot is suspiciously similar to 50’s B movie (and MST3K favorite) “Teenagers From Outer Space”, although that one used giant monster lobsters as the Earth threat, rather than viral weapons. And that one had the titular teens fitting in better, despite barely even changing out of their flying-saucer uniforms.
My first thought.
One of these had to influence the other...
"Talk about Bewitchin' Pool?"
"Oh yea, that was the other bad one."
Don’t worry, he’ll get to that.
Yeah, I thought the premise was interesting but between the child actors' sloppy performances, the parents being too shrilly, and the weird effects, I didn't like it very much.
@@jlev1028 Not to mention the production troubles and the reshoots.
@@jlev1028 I thought the movie was okay, but the books are probably better.
Seems to me, the aliens were studying too many greaser films, as "historical documents", and used that as their basis for their disguises. ;)
I'll bet they watched "The Wild Ones" and thought it was a documentary!
I hear the dialogue from the Biker Aliens written by Hamner and I paraphrase the line in Shrek 3rd: "Help there's a middle aged screenwriter trying to relate to me!"
This is definitely 1 of the Twilight Zone episodes that would have benefited from the hour-long format.
Hilarious- right away he admits “that was a bad one”😂 oh wow the fact that Hamner wrote the Bewitchin’ Pool is surprising because that’s always been one of my favorite episodes and this one’s gotta be one of the worst lol
The funniest part was Scott and Fred sarcastically admitting that they were aliens from another planet, when a nosy neighbour asks if they're ham radio operators.
I remembered watching this episode. I was like "that's the ending?"
I thought the ending was not fullfilling. Like something was missing. Clearly this episode should've changed the ending
It is just mean spirited like the previous one. Was it because they knew they were not getting another season and so they choose to just vent their anger on the episodes?
This is probably the worst episode in the series. Aliens in leather jackets doesn’t really work as a well executed idea
I disagree. I thought it was one of the best episodes.
Nothing is worse than Cavender is Coming lol. This did kinda come close but I at least was curious enough to see where it was going. I’d be f*n pissed if I waited all week for a new twilight zone back in the day and it was Cavender is Coming…ugh
Reminds me of the boba fett show when the gang rides around on brightly colored Vespa scooters as if thats supposed to he threatening or cool 😂
I love it when someone admits that something they worked on was awful.
Watching these on the weekends gives off a extra comfort feel
I just love these insights.
I'm sure everyone back in those days just assumed that we'd have everything figured out by now humanity wise. 👁⏰️
The premise of Black Leather Jackets promises no landmark status as far as classic TZ episodes go, but that said, I somehow enjoy this episode. There IS the menacing threat of the formidable designs on all humanity that these men aim to piston out, and while I refrain from argument as to the static quality of this script, the cyclists ARE in those black cloaks, merely subtly composed aliens from the dark valley of a distant planet. The Sheriff would have anyone bamboozled upon first encounter. But being real, again, Earl Hamner, Jr never did advocate his failed vision for the script, and taking it from Mr. Ed's mouth, this will never be a revered classic.
Thanks. The aliens seem to be able to absorb surface elements of human culture, but not really understand it. I sympathize. ❤
Ngl the best thing about this episode was the outfits the three aliens were wearing lol
This is still one of my favorites. To each his own.
Could you please do these as part of FanScription
• What if Disney’s Cinderella didn’t make it to the ball (Disney’s Cinderella 1950movie)
• What if Bambi's Mother survived (Disney’s Bambi)
• What if Flik and Atta had children (A Bug's Life 2)
• The Incredibles vs The Sinister Six (Doctor Octopus, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Sandman and Vulture)
• What if DreamWorks’s Rise of the Guardians 2 happened?
• What if Disney’s Tarzan and friends found an unground world with dinosaurs and a lost civilization of people who mistake Jane as a Goddess (Disney’s Tarzan 2)
• What if Elsa was the main villain of Disney’s Frozen
• Batman vs The Green Goblin
• Spider-man vs The Joker
• What if The Evil Queen (from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 1937movie) had won?
• What if Ridley Scott directed Alien 3
John Carpenter pulled this off better with "They Live."
Now that you've done Disneycember, Dreamworksuary, Bat May, and this, you should do Nickuly/Aprilodeon.
A more interesting (and convincing) twist would be if the aliens were the bastards.
“But these people are good people!”
“That’s the problem, you idiot.”
Great episode with a surprising twist. I know that its a bad episode, i think it's pretty good.
I watched a Twilight Zone marathon on MeTV!
Next time Night Call!
Yeah, this episode is not exactly a main highlight of the Twilight Zone
Tunnel snake rules
Dang it I like this one!
I don't defend it very much, but I like it too.
This was a full and informative 5 and a half minutes.....it was cool
You know, I think if someone like Harlan Ellison had re-written the script it might’ve worked.
Aliens invading as leather-bound hipster-bikers sounds like something he’d have a go at…
It's important to know that Michael Forest isn't only an on-screen actor but a voice actor as well. He is best known for providing voice-over work on anime english dubs. He is one of the many old-school voice actors who started their careers on-screen before dubbing over anime. Nowadays most voice actors instantly start their careers on anime dubbing thanks to the guidance of professional ADR directors, although there are still voice actors who work both on cartoons and anime. Shame Walter didn't mention this fact when talking about Forest, but at least this comment should be useful for people who don't know.
I enjoyed it. It was wildly implausible but Lee Kinsolving & Shelley Fabares were great together, even if she was a little too breathy in her line reads.
still went back and rewatched before watching this- just cause it was one of the only ones I havent seen
its not great
but going into that mysterious mode of TZ is a relaxing escape even when the script is bad
Yes, this is sort of like the monsters. You do to arrive on mulberry street.A lot of other memorable twilight zones, so at least it had an interesting idea.An alien invasion story but with sort of marlin brando guys doing their worst impression
The most notable part of this episode for me is that one of the bikers is played by Michael Forest who was the voice of Prince Olympius in Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue!
This episode reminds me of the movie The Wild One only with a twist!
In another universe plus a couple of rewrites this could've been the perfect B movie and time capsule to the 50s.
I have to admit, when I heard Rod's closing narration, I laughed out loud. Like, WTF was this? Earl Hamner Jr. was a good writer, and this was the best he could do? Must have been tight time constraints. Shows even good writers write crap now and then.
Awesome The Twilight Zone episode!
50's Greasers? A young Stephen King must've been envious!
Once your synopsis of the entire twilight zone series is over, Walter, I’m sure we’d all love to hear what you think are the best and worst episodes of the entire run as well as any closing thoughts
Yeah, that closing line was pretty appropriate for this lackluster tale.
3:41 Oh no he's Neil Breen! Also I'm friggin tired of those "Their god tells them to be peaceful" bs when most conflicts are caused by religion.
@@MforMovesets I'd say most large scale conflicts are over land and resources, religion is just used as an excuse.
@@Ryodraco Okay large scale true... the religious conflicts are just genocides against civilians. Cough.
Looking at it now, the plot feels more at home if it was set post-apocalyptic, with the leather jackets picking up the remaining humans.
When even the writer, Earl Hamner Jr., admits that this was a mediocre episode, you know that it's easily skippable. Promising concept, lacklustre execution.
When I see the term "black leather jackets", all I can think of is that campy '50s ballad about a myterious bad boy. So applying that to a Twilight Zone episode feels off to me. Why are the aluens diaguised as greasers? Why does one of them assume most of humanity is good just because he met a few in a small town? Why justify the mass slaughter of an entire species with such an obtuse presumption?
When they push the dad around and say dumb clichés it makes me laugh. It's definitely the upper end of bad episodes.
Oof! Kind of a rough one!
But the next one to review (Night Call) will definitely be worth it!
Fallout New Vegas vibes haha
I actually like this episode. It’s not one of my favorite TZ episodes but I enjoy it.
I actually like the episode I like the Twilight Zone and I also like old teen rebel movies so fits for me
At least their jackets looked cool, daddy-o!😅
I wonder if Stan Lee and/or Jack Kirby watched this episode and based Silver Surfer on the Scott character…
They can’t all be hits I guess.
~_~
I knew when I saw this was a 5-minute video that the opinions on it weren't going to be positive...
Shelley Fabares had left her starring role on "The Donna Reed Show" a year earlier, and this episode was one of the ways she tried to branch out as an actor. Shame the script was lame. She did what she could. The big eye on the TV set might have inspired a similar concept used by the Monkees on their last-ever episode, "Mijacgeo," which was written and directed by Micky Dolenz.
One of their lesser tales.
I like the idea... but yeah... I can't see any alien actually being convinced that there's more love here than hate. I'm not even convinced that love is even a real thing that actually exists outside of fiction but I have a lot of trust issues from past trauma. I'd be more convinced that the guy wasn't actually an alien at all and was actually a human who infiltrated their operation. Maybe that's why he didn't use his powers cause in a shocking twist he wasn't actually an alien. Would have made the episode better if that actually was the reveal.
If they had like an hour-long episode devoted to the story maybe and that it turned out a little bit better than what it did I'd say give it a green light.
What in the "They Live" am I seeing right now...
Well I'll be dipped. A TZ episode I've never seen!.
What is the name of the music used in this video?
3:24
Twist
I recall rewatching this episode as an adult and thinking Scott was really hot. Like if Tom of Finland drew twinks.
Ok I Don't hate this one. When I first saw it, I was already obsessed with Marlon Brando from The Wild One sooooo yea
Not sure what he expected her to do with this information. Like even if she believed him, then what?
This is a bad episode right in the middle of 2 great episodes.
Not relevant to the video but when I started playing the video the Twilight Zone theme was do-do-doing and suddenly I heard I see dead people 😅 Kendrick Lamar declared that he wants to be in the episode.
You can tell this installment was of lesser quality when the title of the episode is “Black Leather Jackets”. Might’ve benefited from an hour long runtime, though, to flesh out the ideas and characters a little more. Then again, maybe not.
Maybe I watch too many anti-creationist videos on youtube, but the alien's rhetoric reminds me of biblical apologist stuff about justifying genocide. You know, the "that society sacrificed babies and did a cannibalism, so it was a net good to destroy their city and kill every man woman and child." Good to see that kind of content goes back to this era of TV...actually would the material have been elevated if they did a direct biblical reference at some point, bringing up the Cainanites or something?
Why do space aliens in TTZ keep invading Earth and wanting us dead if humans are no threat to them? What's the moral of these stories, that paranoia is justified in some cases?
"Why can't you punks learn to be uncool like everyone else?
Kind of an episode worthy Stephen King, Daddy- O .
Hmm interesting plot, what chosen people on Earth is doing this right now??
A weak premise but an interesting twist to say the least.
uhhhgg, THey had the chance to do something visually interesting and thematically different with the biker angle and even the value of humanity through the lense of Society's rebels........but once again the writers defaulted to their usual grab bag elements, this time it was Aliens and Mind powers, among the other regulars like poorly explained magic, and Astronauts + Space Travel. You can tell at this point they were going through the motions and likely not communicating over how similar a lot of these teleplays were getting long term
Request for Angelina ballerina the shining star trophy-nostalgia critic
Probably the only one that I would consider dated.
Greasers From Outer Space.
Definitely a one time watch but after that is to leave it in the zone
Definitely a better script could have made this episode better
This is definitely mid. I wouldn't say a complete dud but dang. The premise is at least interesting.
I was the first one to like and comment
Cringe
Definitely, one of the worst TZ episodes ever. I won't say THE worst because Come Wander With Me is still to come.
But, you know, there are a number of similarities to the insane Tom Graeff "disasterpiece" Teenagers From Outer Space that MST3K riffed in the classic era. They may not be wearing leather jackets, but they might as well be. They're no more teenagers than the TZ actors, but have to admit the acting on TZ is ... slightly better....
Yeah, this episode sucks. On the plus side, only one more week until The Masks.
This episode really sucked.
