Everyone who comes to the US or Canada, comes with a reference frame of Uncles and Aunties who moved to the US in late 90s to early 2000s. The cost of living, job opportunities and path to citizenship or even residency is 10X to 20X harder than what it used to be in 90s. People who immigrated back in 90s need to have an honest conversation with relatives planning to immigrate for education and jobs. On the contrary, they sell them a dream that no longer exists.

@@antonyjohnpeter549 Thank you. I was sucked into believing that everything falls in place once you start education in the US. Little did I know that I will have to apply to 500+ jobs to get a decent internship. It was a traumatizing experience for someone who was selected in a top university in the country. Now, when prospective students ask me I make sure I let them know the reality. If they are ready for the struggle and okay with losing jobs and moving back to India, I tell them to take the gamble.

I am an IIM graduate living in Europe and I closely resonate with what you said, Amish. I have seen the struggle of Indian students here right from finding affordable housing, working multiple jobs to cover their expenses and eventually struggling to find a decent job. The companies take advantage of the students situation and offer them much lower pays than the market average. While the same students paint a rosy picture of their life amongst their juniors and other students who have the dream of studying abroad, their own struggles are hidden. The career counseling agencies in India are quite corrupt as well, making false promises to students and earning huge commissions from colleges for placing students. Thanks for throwing light on this issue, and I hope more people are vocal about their experiences abroad and our youth has all the right information before making their decisions.

@@Avengers-y5p I am always on the lookout for offers in India, and ready to come back any time now. While the CTC in Europe is higher, there are high taxes and high living costs, which make the benefits low in Europe. Also there are really good opportunities for highly skilled people in India and the pay is equivalent to European jobs. So working in India is not a bad option at all and our generation should be lucky to be part of India's growth story.

I have a German college admit and a German visa, but I currently work as a structural engineer earning 10k/month. This puts me in a dilemma. I couldn’t qualify for GATE to pursue a master's at an IIT, and people around me say that a master's degree from a tier 2 or 3 college in India holds little value. This has left me feeling stuck and unfulfilled.
I want to be in a place where my skills are respected. At 24, staying here is pushing me toward depression. It feels like India only caters to the top 90th percentile; the rest, like me, are left struggling. Even though there’s always hope, it’s hard to stay optimistic when hard work doesn’t necessarily lead to a good job or life.
This is an excellent video. But maybe going abroad is way to escape the competition here.

Similarly, I hope the systems in India (govt, education institutions, regulatory bodies) give adequate support to students and graduates. Right now, people want to go abroad for studies taking all risks because India is making it unsustainable for youngsters to stay back and live a decent life in India.

The solution starts by expanding the number of high quality Universities and institutions in India and making the way into them less rigorous, without any other discrimination except merit. If the tax money goes into proper utilization to make the nation better and provide the so-called better lifestyle for which people rush to developed countries, why would people choose to leave their country? Instead, it is not transparent as to where the tax money goes into. In countries like US, we can actually witness how the tax money is utilized to make the country better. Hence, the change must come both from the Government and the citizens of India, to reduce the number of outgoing students.

I studied abroad in the US, it was a great experience. The quality of education was top-notch, some nonsense classes but whatever was useful was very practically taught not just memorising books. I didnt believe then and i dont believe now that you NEED college, i told my mom the same during my first semester in the US that i still didnt get the point of doing it but i was forced to continue. Maybe my dad having a business always provided me the safety of not having to do a job, but millions of indians are jobless today with degrees. Now that i am back in India, I still dont need my degree and have started my own work completely separate from my dad’s business. Also, my dad passed away during the first wave of covid after which i have also continued and handled his works. From my experience none of what i am doing now really requires a degree, but US education helped me develop mentally and become responsible.
Also, I dont know what they teach in Indian colleges but as an employer i have dealt with many people with degrees from here in India who I am not sure have actually understood anything during their time in college the stupidity just amazes me. Please dont be angry this is just personal experience i am not making any personal attacks.

    @sankarshanananantham7603 25 днів тому

Good topic taken up well by you, Amish. Let me chip in my 2 cents on this topic (more specifically US bound Indian students):
    1. Most surprises Indian students encounter in the US can be eliminated, had they been coached ahead of time to compute a simple 'cost-benefit' analysis. I wouldn't be surprised if >60% of the students get alerted to multiple 'red flags' on their own case. The choice would then be left for the student, their parents/family to make the decision knowing their red flags before they embark on the overseas education venture.
    2. The greater culprits in this mess are usually the students themselves who simply 'fancy' going to US, w/o getting themselves educated about the new country, cost of living, laws of the land, rules to abide by, etc. They just get enamored w/the glitter of the unknown. Learn to cook and clean your own toilet; something many Indian students get their 1st shock on arrival in the US. The glitter starts to fade w/this 1st jolt.
    3. Many Indian students have little-to-no idea about the various immigration steps involved in a long term residency in the US. A lot of hearsay (mostly what they wish to hear) is how they operate. This usually leads to a lot of frustration, disappointment, stress and shame, all of which are avoidable by educating oneself ahead of the journey.
    4. Many Indian students come here to pursue a higher education (Masters, Ph. D) w/absolutely zero work experience in India. This puts them at a real disadvantage in getting internships, jobs-worse, being able to hold onto a job even when they get one. Their ability to function w/adults in a regular work place becomes uncomfortable for them, usually rendering many as 'misfits'.
    5. India now has many worth-the-while educational institutions (Colleges, Universities) that offer good curriculum for most of the programs for which these students come to the US. There is absolutely no need for many to come to US to pursue many of the degrees, when it is easily available in plenty in India.
    6. You talk about STEM, which has become a buzz-word in the academic circles the past few years. At the face of it this term sounds quite fanciful. A quick check will reveal that most programs offered in many US Universities are STEM, many of which are questionable. A STEM degree does not guarantee even an internship leave alone a FT job. Take a the example of the thousands of the CS majors the past 4 years many who did not succeed in getting even an internship! It just gets foreign students an additional 2 years under OPT.
    7. Higher education in the US is just as much a business organization as any other is. Therefore the onus of considering the success of an expensive higher education lies primarily w/the student not w/the University. The student/parent/family needs to takes these high spending ventures very seriously, do their home-work diligently identify their own PROS/CONS and MUST be prepared to swallow the hard-pill of recognizing that this venture is NOT for everyone. (So please don't expect top US Universities to open campuses in India at low Indian prices or have an appetite to deal w/the like of UGC. Many Indian students who come to the US themselves wouldn't go to such a University if it were in India, since many come to the US to get a job in the US via the University route-it is a 'dead-on-arrival' proposition, sorry.)
    8. GoI should also step-in (via their banks) to provide better guideline to banks that easily lend for 'Overseas study'. The cost/benefit analysis exercise could be done here to prove a greater viability for success of a student when sanctioning a student loan.
    9. GoI should publish statistics on the number students who failed to secure a job overseas after completion of their overseas study and return home w/high debts. This should also include statistics on the majors they took, the University they graduated from, etc. that eventually failed to yield a FT job. Such statistics will help future students and their families from making grave financial mistakes that could jeopardize their otherwise lifetime savings. Banks granting loans (and precious FOREX) should use these statistics as guidelines when sanctioning loans
    10. The unending wait for a US PR for Indian citizens the past several years, is a stark reminder/reality on the limited time available to work, for an Indian after pursuing a higher education. The work permit (H1B) is limited to only a short window of time for a foreigner to stay in the US, w/o a PR. This simple exercise can red flag many, vs blindly flock to the US not fully comprehending the challenges of securing a FT job and then succeed in crossing the H1B visa hurdle.
Given all these and many more real concerns, it is time all (students, parents, families, banks, GoI, etc.) take these expensive ventures very seriously and ponder hard and come to common-sense conclusions on the believed promise of a brighter future (elsewhere) vs many healthy, peaceful and prosperous choices probably in their own backyard. I can't imagine the agony of the many who have returned to India, having failed to secure a job post their 'foreign degree' venture. Students should also learn to respect that their parent's hard earned life savings should NOT be leveraged to pay-off their expense student loans. It is absolutely not fair on the parents during their golden years of life.

Indian high way are getting better day by day but as the same time it is getting expensive day by day.

Now the job market here is experience driven and upon that there the government has increased the threshold so it’s difficult to get sponsorship regardless if you are in stem or not. One thing I have noticed here there are proper platforms to apply for jobs. There are job fairs too conducted by the universities help you where to apply so that you can be heard back.
But job market in India too isn’t doing that good. My sister is struggling to switch jobs. And when I was doing job hunting here you won’t get to hear from any company because there are no proper platforms for freshers to apply if you miss the college placements.

One real situation is Indian students are disillutioned with reservations system in highier professional universities and in Govt service Imagine a situation meritorius( general) student has to work with a class mate who is just able pass, up to this point it is ok. But later on due to reservations in promotions his class mate with reservation will be promoted to highier post and the general candidate has to work under him as general will not get promotion due to reservation. This is humiliating to general person. That's why students are flocking to foriegn lands for highier education and jobs.

Main posting which he forgot to emphasize was that if students go the west expecting to get citizenship and luxury lifestyle from first year, then those days are gone. But if students do proper research and choose the right western nation to study they might get citizenship and a much better lifestyle in a few years.

I think the main reason why Indian students want to migrate abroad and make a life there is because of the desire to become extremely wealthy. This partially stems from their parents who want their kids to achieve things which they themselves couldn't in their lifetime, or more often than not, for a societal status to brag about their kids being in 'developed' countries. All this will eventually reduce if the mindset of people in India changes, and if the rat race to become wealthy dampens. A mindset change is pivotal. Plus, the government must stop discriminating people in the name of caste, background and gender. I know people who really wanted to make their lives better in India itself by trying to break-in to the IITs or NITs or top Medical colleges. But caste and competition are an extreme deterrent for such people to get into what they want. I do not think IITs or NITs admit students as easily as a few US/UK good institutions would(not ivy league of course). Thus, people begin to think, why to waste valuable time in entrance exams in India, if there are practical options available abroad. So basically, it must be a systemic and mindset change both from Indian parents and students. That is when this export of talent will stop. Trust me, most people who go abroad are not even interested to go through these struggles to make a life. They just go for the lifestyle and money. India has many positives which these countries do not have. Healthcare, safety, good food and culture to name a few. Hence, unless the systemic change happens along with the shift in mindset, it is tough to stop migration.

lool, so people should stay in india without any jobs? The government should first work towards mass job creation by cutting red tape which would lead to manufacturing jobs being created, which possibly could create huge number of jobs. How does a country handle a 1.4B (and growing) population? It's never been done before, except for china and god knows we can't replicate what china did. We just can't, there are too many structural issues in the indian society to do so.
I feel, every person who is ambitious and can get out and wants to, should get out of India. Fend for yourself, the country has little hope, and you can always come back in the future if you want to.

  • @user-pm4pl5hh9m
    @user-pm4pl5hh9m Місяць тому +3

Excellent videocast and agree completely with Amish's points. Here are some observations based on my life abroad:
    1. Life looks good and much better than India for a person in his or her 20s and 30s. Reality strikes when s/he gets married, has kids, and the cost of education for the kids, living with a 30-year mortgage for the home (US), dealing with health of the family, and preparing for a retired life post-60. This slice of reality is particularly painful in the late 50s when the kids have, hopefully, established themselves and the cost of retirement looms in front - inadequate savings, inadequate social security, rising costs of healthcare, and a senior life that seems altogether too dreadful and dangerous to think about.
    2. Today, bank loans have opened to doors to mass immigration. But this puts both parents and Indian banks in the dock - either one of them pays the price in due course. The kids are rarely going to assume the costs of the loans and parents will see decreased quality of life because of the decision to fund their kids' education.
    3. The rising tide of Indian immigration, especially as students, coincides with a dangerous and looming problem: that of AI or artificial intelligence that will likely slice through all entry level jobs in the near future. Companies, where they can offer the much fewer jobs on offer, will offer them first to citizens that involve less paperwork, legal issues, and cost. Indians and other immigrants will be left out in the cold, without jobs, without visas, and forced to make a harsh decision.
My suggestions to the Indian government would be as follows:
--- Stop all bank loans for families to fund their kids' education abroad. Focus instead on inexpensive loans for a domestic education.
--- Stop inviting the well known Ivy League and other Top Order universities to establish in India. Those who want to go there and can pay for the education themselves can always go there. Instead, the smaller universities, many of them offering very high quality education, could be invited here but with strict caps on tuition fees - perhaps at the same level as Indian private sector universities.
--- Indian education, as Amish notes, has to become more employment focused and artisanal - whether in IT, marketing, distribution, retail, manufacturing, etc. For this, India should build more graded programs: certificate (less than six months duration); diploma (less than 2 years), and basic degree (3 years). All programs should have an equally graded and compulsory internship that is offered in partnership with industry bodies, whether in manufacturing, supply chain, IT, financial, healthcare sector, etc.

Why not mention the elephant in the room? That lakhs of our youngsters see no other route to a "better" life than to try to getting into a preferably Western country at any cost! No matter what horror stories you tell, this trend will continue till this feeling of hopelessness in our youth sustains. And it is not just our youth. Whole families are risking everything to get out. And sometimes freezing to death in the process.

It’s not like India is a heaven for everyone, else students wouldn’t have been running around. There’s too much competition for good universities, high cost of education in India as well, poor working environment in Indian companies and an unhealthy living environment in India. These things haven’t been mentioned at all in the video. To top it all, high taxes and inflation is off the charts.

India should have prioritised health and education as the two most important issues to bring about progress to the nation. A society that is well educated enjoying reasonable health would have been a springboard for rapid economic development and a more disciplined society. Instead our country is mired in caste divisions and religious differences and spend more time in asserting our differences and making the society less cohesive. I hope our people will wake up to the fact progress lies in being united and tolerant and respectful to each other.
