Drove Jon in a limo once 2 an Awards Show. Tipped me front explaining he was gonna get drunk and might not remember too after. We agreed on a place to meet up afterwards. He and Chris Farley and dates came out to agreed meeting place and he goes into a big theatrical performance for the people milling about on where is my fn Driver while im standing behind him next to Farley and the Ladies and they are as entertained as much as myself and the crowd. He finished it up with, "Oh there you are, well no tip for you". Everyone just lost it. He and Farley cracking each other up that night in the back of the Limo was a lifetime experience. Love you Jon

Such a terrible tragedy in what happened to Phil. Jon is just one of those comedians who you get or you don't get. I remember watching the prime time live special of Saturday's Night Live's 40th anniversary. They had an "in memoriam" video where it showed all of the many cast members they had lost in death over the decades. It was very emotional, but they made a small joke out of it by showing Jon Lovitz when Jon was actually alive and well sitting in the audience. They did it twice and both times Jon grimaced and looked confused as hell when the camera panned on him. The joke being is that he isn't dead, but his career was long dead. I don't know if he was in on the joke or knew about it, but he played along rather convincingly. Director Penny Marshall appreciated his glum humor and cast him in Big and A League of their Own. We need to see more Jon Lovitz in these depressing times!

Jon took Phil’s death really hard. But, I understand Jon making a joke out of it for Ed. Because, humor can be used as a defense mechanism in this type of situation. I know, because I do the same thing as well.
In February 1981, I lost my father after a massive coronary ruptured his heart. I remember sitting in the front row at his funeral, just thinking about him, and what I had just lost. While running through memories in my mind, one particular memory really stood out.
The summer of 1976 was excruciatingly hot, and we couldn’t afford an AC unit, and didn’t have central air. So, my dad put a fan in my bedroom window, blowing outward. I told him that he put the fan in backwards. And he replied, “NEITHER IT AIN’T!” And, there it was. Those three words caused me to start laughing. At first, I put my hand over my mouth to stifle the my laughter. But, it didn’t work. So, with my hand over my mouth, I had to leave the funeral because I could not stop laughing. I went into the bathroom laughing so hard, I was in tears. A staff member of the funeral home followed me into the bathroom thinking I was crying. When I was able to compose myself, I told him that memory, and made him laugh too.
That memory still makes me laugh. So, as I said, I understand Jon’s cracking a joke. It’s a natural reaction.

I 100% believe this story. When you're used to telling jokes and making people laugh, it becomes your default way of dealing with things. Just days after my dad passed away, I was prone to tossing around some gallows humor that often caught people off guard; but that's just how I deal with stuff. I'd prefer to turn the situation around and make it something people can get laugh at.
