This was such a great film. A highly remarkable experience.
I can't believe other reactors haven't watched this. Thank you for watching this great film!
All the other (crappy in my opinon) Reactors are doing Marvel/Star Wars and nothing else
@@barryscott8041 Seems like there is a list of movies that gets sent around to be reviewed that most reactors follow. They all seem to do the same movies at about the same time and I find it hard to believe that this is accidental.
@@vanhattfield8292 Most of them just react to whatever gets the most views. And that's usually the same movies.
The guy that looks like Jim Jarmusch actually is Jim Jarmusch. They were friends… he agreed to a cameo as the Frostee Cream worker.
My all time favorite film. It's a roller coaster of emotions. The cast and the performances were flawless. Billy Bob created a masterpiece with this.
I totally agree. And i LOVE Matlock btw 😁
Especially that country singer the one who played the drunk, I thought he did a great job of acting like he was "blacked out drunk" and I didn't even know he was a famous country. singer.
@@cliffordzellner5917 Dwight Yoakam had one of the best performances in any film I've ever watched. I wasn't familiar with his music at the time, but man, what an actor. Throughout most of the movie you want to kill him, but there's a certain sick charm to his character which you can't help but to laugh at times. So many quotable lines from this film as well... Much love.
Great to see a reactor watch different really good films besides the usual circuit. Love Sling Blade. Shit I just saw you did Papillion too. Awesome. Another great one no one has done. Subscribed
The joke at @12:45 is that the two men were on a bridge over the water, urinating into the water, and just to boast at how long his penis is, the one man says that "the water is cold" ( just a joke as you can imagine that the water must be several meters below the bridge). But the fellow beside him comes back with an even more clever remark, saying that "yes, and it is deep too" (suggesting that his penis is even that much more longer since his penis can not only touch the water's surface, but reach the river bed and gauge the depth of the river!
Thank you for watching this film. Being a southern man, whose mother's family is from Arkansas, it has a special place in my heart. The characters are all individuals one would know in everyday life. Very much in the southern gothic tradition.
I stumbled upon this film many years ago one night while I was stoned and half asleep to whatever satellite movie channel I had on. This movie woke me up and i fell in love with it. It's so raw and real, and absolutely genuine. From the dialogue to the way it was shot so simply. One of my favorites for sure. Thanks for doing the reaction!
Did you notice that with each character's last scene, they all finished with the same word...""Karl?"
Not at my first watch, no. But thanks to editing, i've noticed it later on. And because of my goldfish brain, it happens all the time 🥴
Classic film and great review. Reactors usually ignore it. Glad you didn’t. 👍
That's so strange. It has all the ingredients of the type of movie that would get them views. The movie and the character of Karl are popular enough yet apparently they are unfamiliar and even their fans never suggest it.
Been waiting for this to hit the "reaction wave" other movies hit, where one person reviews a movie, then suddenly, every review channel in existence rushes to get out their reviews of the same movie. But, NO! lol Nobody else is picking up to react/review this.
Thanks for your video!
Haha yea, that's a phenomenon i've witnessed many times myself. That's why i prioritize films nobody has reacted to before. Swimming against the current ✊
This film is rare now and not on streaming. Might be why. Although I ordered a used collector's edition for 6 bucks works great!
What's even more strange is that I haven't even seen any comments on those other reaction channels suggesting the they watch the movie. At this point, some of them just take suggestions from their paying followers.
@@Tr0nzoid And here's another one:
On someone's Patreon there is a user recommending this for month but being constantly ignored by the reactor. Kinda funny but very strange. That's were i got the idea from to watch it myself because the plot sounded very interesting to me.
@@watchingcodyrice That's really cool. It's good to sometimes check out stuff other people aren't. I used to (no money nowadays) blind buy movies and ended up with a lot of great ones I'd never have known about otherwise, like In Bruges, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and Intermission.
I enjoyed your reaction. I live not far from where most of this was filmed,go by it almost daily. It's changed alot in some parts but still the same in others. There is even a cafe diner called the sling blade, where the scene of him and Vaughn was filmed. I've ate a few times there, great food. Great film one of my favorites and for all those wondering, the accents were spot on, several of the actors are from Arkansas,it had an amazing attention to detail. Anyways, good review, thank ye!
Billy was a HUGE fan of Hoosiers, mainly because of how it looked, stylistically. And he said to his DP, I want it to look like Hoosiers, only uglier. And he's also a huge fan of master shots and an occasional odd camera angle. And yes, that was Jim Jarmusch as the Frostee Cream guy. I highly recommend to anyone who hasn't owned the film to purchase the Director's Cut 2 DVD set. The commentary (solo Billy Bob Thornton) is worth it! And since it was released as the 10th Anniversary, you'll notice a slight change in his voice when there's a new scene.
I reckon, I might need to get my hands on a copy of them Director's Cut 2 DVD set, Mmm-hmmm!
I really like your stuff man!
Probably my favourite movie , to me it's perfect, I can't fault it anyway . Thanks for reacting to it 👍
I can see why. It's so authentic and the slow pace giving the characters enough time to breathe. And then there is the ending scene which is masterfully done. Thank you for watching 👍
I'm glad to have found this reaction. I subscribed. This is a fantastic movie, and I'm glad you liked it!
Top:D nice reaction....
I see you did a reaction to this 6 months ago and still no one else has done it yet? This movie is in my top five.
I know. This and so many others aren't being reacted to. Everyone does the same circuit of movies and it gets so repetitive
Every time my husband is about to unload some uncomfortable information, I look up at him and say, "Karl?" Cracks him up every time
😅
When Billy Bob Thornton was coming up with the idea of the movie he looked in a mirror and literally did the whole monologue that was in classroom in that voice
"some folks call it a sling blade, I call it a Kaiser blade." 🤣 This movie is bizarre. Always laughed at how he talked. Everyone had that deep southern drawl
Such a great film!!
This is a really good movie, thanks for watching. No one else reacts to this movie, I guess because it's kind of slow paced, but the story and acting really pulls in the viewer.
It's amazing movie one of my favorites
You might also like The Apostle starring Robert Duvall. Billy Bob Thornton is in it too.
I did 🙂

thanks for the reaction , to a grate film
The pleasure is all mine. Thank you for watching 👍
Sling Blade... FANTASTIC!!!!!
React to more!!!
I think one reason I enjoy this movie is that it has a great message about people in general, that by and large the ordinary people dealing with each other on a one to one basis are kind and decent to one another despite their differences. We are so used to dealing with each other through rude internet posts, anonymous tirades, or hearing of mob mentality conflicts between various special interest groups, that we don't remember that, despite all our differences, people are generally pretty good to one another in individual settings. For Carl, the mentally handicapped ex-con, and the gay store manager, to get along and have seemingly pretty good acceptance in the community, even in a rural small town setting, seems fairly heartwarming. The reactor expects Carl to get a lot of push back and flack from the local community but instead he is helped and befriended. Just the decency of everyone to each other, other than the rare bad apple, is nice and unexpected (which means it defies Hollywood tropes on how people are rude and distrusting of strangers, particularly in small towns). I like to think that it is a realistic portrayal, but maybe it's a bit idealistic.
Dwight Yokam puts in a great performance as Doyle, despite playing such a piece of crap.
I agree. You can say someone did a great job when you really hate that character he plays.
Well it is easier playing a nice guy than someone who's an a-hole. Well at least I would imagine.
Great movie!
you earn suscribe, great movie.. nice reation
the guy working at the burger joint who you said looks familiar was also Billy Bob
Nah, Cody’s right. It is Jim Jarmusch.
I saw this in the movie theater here in the US and I can't honestly say what's different between the feature version and the Director's Cut. It looked pretty much the same to me.
I've never seen the scene with Doyle, Vaughan & Karl in the pick-up, talking to the police.
In my top 5 films of all time, and I've seen a few thousand films and shows. The only part of the deleted scenes from the director's cut that I agreed with being cut out was the whole subplot of Frank liking that girl, it was out of place and her performance was the only one in the film that was not particularly good. Regardless, absolutely beautiful film.
That's right. That part was leading nowhere. But it was sweet though. And i think Billy Bob let that in to underline the sacrifice Karl made in the end.
Not sure if you mean the part with Frank and the girl he likes or Karl and the grocery store girl. But if it was the Frank bit I used to think that way too. But now I think it's there as a way of explaining why Frank's mother was so attached to Doyle. Maybe she went through something not to dissimilar when she was younger so now doesn't truly value herself. She tries to be with people even if they don't love her. It would explain why she stays with Doyle. I think it makes more sense than just her needing money, especially since Frank mentions Doyle didn't help out with money anyway. Linda also remarks that she feels bad for Doyle since he's had a rough time. She is also instantly nice to Karl, someone she doesn't know and the only knowledge she had was he had been in a mental hospital. Karl could have been a crazed lunatic, but her first thought was always to be nice to people, even if it might put her son at risk. Something ain't quite right with her, but unlike Doyle, her problems make her an overly positive rather than negative person.
So I think the storyline was there to show that Frank could be in a similar risky spiral to his mother due to the rough childhood he is having :)
@@cheesepoo55 Oh, he was talking about Frank and i was talking about Karl 😂 I should learn how to read correctly, i guess.
@@watchingcodyrice xD. I think you are right about Karl's bit for sure. He did like her but was ok with sacrificing it if it helped Frank
I had an uncle that was like Carl. He looked & acted like him though he never killed anyone haha. He was like a child in a man's body but like Carl was good with.small engines & could split firewood with an axe like a machine.
Another great movie with John Ritter that no one has reacted to is Real Men, a spy comedy. Very underrated.
Oh yes, i already have an eye on this for a while. It's also starring Jim Belushi who did a bunch of great comedies back then, like Mr. Destiny (1990) or Taking Care of Business (1990). So i will definitely watch this at some point.
I hope you’ll see The Apostle if you haven’t. You’ll love it.
Thank you for the recommendation! I had an eye on it a few years back and thought it was interesting. Now it's finally on my list and waiting to be watched 😉👍
I love Sling Blade, it's high on my 10 all-time favorite movies. It was fun to watch your reaction. I have 2 other suggestions if you've never seen them before: #1. LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE (2006) with Steve Carrell, Greg Kinnear, & Toni Collette. It was nominated for four Oscars and won two for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Alan Arkin; 2. AMERICAN BEAUTY (1999) with Kevin Spacey & Annette Benning; it won many Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. I am surprised that there are only a couple of reactions to these movies too! PS - I subscribed (Joni)!
Thank you for the recommendations. Unfortunately i've seen both of them already. American Beauty is top notch with a great score and i'm also surprised by the lack of reactions to that. I appreciate your comment. Thank you very much!
@@watchingcodyrice Well sir, that means you have great taste in movies! Others I would recommend (but you've probably already seen) are: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975, Jack Nicholson); The Graduate (1967, Dustin Hoffman & Anne Bancroft). Later decades: An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), A Few Good Men (1992), Erin Brockovich (2000), and Armageddon (1998).
@@jerickson725 And you sir, have a great taste aswell because these are all fantastic films (except Armageddon 😛). The only film from that list i haven't seen is An Officer and a Gentleman. I'll put that on my list. Thanks again 👍
@@watchingcodyrice Great, but just to let you know, I'm not a "sir", I'm Joni (female) 😅. Can't believe I forgot to put another of my absolute favorites on my prior list (But again, you've probably seen it): GRAN TORINO (2008-Clint Eastwood).
@@jerickson725 Oh, you have to excuse me ma'am, i'm a bit slow sometimes ☺
Yes, i've seen that aswell and it's one of my absolute favorites too. Eastwood's best in my opinion. It's written by Nick Schenk who is a fantastic writer (The Judge, The Mule) but i'm having a hard time putting his latest work (Cry Macho) on my list because the ratings are, let's say, not so great.
Carl is the hand of G-d. He is so sweet and righteous. Also, very scary. But he's been done SO WRONG.
Well, lying about his past won't do Karl any favors either. If he got close to the family and then they found out, they could _really_ freak out.
And they _would_ find out-- news travels fast in small towns.
It probably _is_ best if Karl is just honest and upfront. If he doesn't tell his story, the locals will just come up with their own version of what happened. But this way he's very clear about why he did it, what effect it had, that he regrets doing it, etc.
And by and large, they _did_ accept Karl as a bit of an oddball, but a friendly and sincere guy.
That band is composed of the greatest singer songwriters in Texas history. Also Doyle is played by a musical genius
I've heard that; they (especially Yoakum) do a great job of playing really badly!
I don't know if you've seen A Simple Plan, but if not it's a good one. I think it might be my favorite movie of all time, and stars Billy Bob also.
Also House of Sand and Fog. A very different movie about a woman and an Iranian couple who each feel like they have the right to a house, but VERY good.
Never seen either of them. Thank you for the recommendations. I've added both to my list.
Where can you watch this? Can't find it
Bflix movies
I would like you to watch Ninja Assassin!
30:10 Why would Doyle provoke Karl? In an earlier scene, Doyle said to Karl "I don't care if you did do violence, I ain't scared of shit." I've known (and used to be) reckless guys like this, alcoholic or not, who would say that. Sounds like macho bravado, but it actually isn't....it's a true statement.
There is the other scene with Frankie and Karl, when Frank asked if Karl could beat up Doyle. Karl said something about Doyle being mean and that Doyle would beat Karl in a fight.
@@frankmiller4550 That's true. Karl wasn't a "mean' guy....Doyle was. Karl waited until Doyle was incapacitated (drunk).
There's a saying in Texas: " Some people just need killin'" I live in Texas. It can be a brutal place, but it can be wonderful. This film shows both, except I think this Arkansas... or Missouri . Who can tell?
American culture of the south
That "copyright" sign went up MUCH more than it had to. It was super annoying.
Carl crazier an a
Something to keep in mind is that Karl was not mentally disabled in any way, his social skills were just limited because of his upbringing and then being institutionalized for so long.
Totally wrong.
He is mildly retarded in the parlance of the times. His fanatically religious parents then, physically and mentally abused him when he was young, because they believed he & his mental abilities were a punishment from God. They forced him to live in an outbuilding and sleep in a dirt hole.
Not merely because "his social skills were just limited".
Sometimes the director’s cut is the opposite. Sometimes it’s done as a cash grab to get people to rent or buy the movie they’ve already seen because, “Hey, look, it’s something new!”
I’ve seen director’s cuts be better and be worse.
I see what you mean but i can only partly agree.
Usually a director has a preferred version which he wants to show the audience but the studio prefers a shorter version which is more marketable. So there is already a director's cut but the studio holds it back and releases it later to get even more money out of the franchise (that's where i agree with you).
I don't think a studio calls it the director's cut if the director doesn't agree to that. There are serveral examples of directors let their name removed from the credits because they didn't agree with the studio. There are also extended cuts but i don't really know if that's related or not.
The director is the one who has the vision and finally makes the film so i (personally) want to watch that. It can be better or worse, yes, but we can't possibly know that beforehand and i tend to trust the director in that matter. So what i do before i watch something is check what versions are out there and what the directors preferred version is. And that's what i'm going for 😉👍
The director's cut isn't always the best one.
I very seldom recommend them over the theatrical cut for first-time viewers.
I think it's best to see it as audiences originally saw it first. Unless the theatrical cut is really, really bad.
If you like it the movie and wanna see more, then definitely got for the extended version or director's cut.
Gr8 movie if you didn't comment every second
