Nie Huaisang is truly a well hidden mastermind. On my second rewatch of this drama I really came to adore him so much. All he wanted was to live a life free from responsibilities with his friends and brother but of course that all changes...
This wasn't suppose to be this long lol. I've been meaning to do a tribute to this character for the longest now. I don't know if I did good in showing the inside of his story but it's ehh.. these are only made for fun, and for me to look back to one day and remember how much I enjoyed this whole drama and it's characters.

What a brilliant strategist this guy is! Imagine the depth of his sorrow if, for a person who only wanted to play around with his friends and have fun, he had to wake up one day and plot a revenge with such patience and perfection. There was an explanation video which said that Nie Huisang had actually enticed Xue Yang into doing his bidding as well as he knew that XY and JG were co-conspirators and I found that to be such a fantastic theory worthy of NH.
- WWX's body (along with his sword) was taken by Jin Guangyao and he wanted to resurrect him with XY's help (as XY was already practicing demonic cultivation) and make him into a fierce corpse that could be controlled with the piece of Yin iron in XY's possession. They were already practicing this dark magic using the Wen prisoners and Wen Ning was the first example of a successful resurrection (done by WWX). They tried this with Nie Mingjue but that was unsuccessful. The theory here is that after WWX's death, Jin Guangshan was probably the one who actually arranged to have WWX's body, his sword and manuscripts to be brought back as he was a collector and was also super ambitious (he was secretly coveting the Yin seal and WWX's powers) and supported XY's demonic cultivation (this is seen from how he wanted to protect XY) as he thought he could use it as a way to make Jin clan powerful. However, he did not take into account Jin Guangyao's hatred and his desire to destroy everyone who looked down on him and his mother.
- NH made XY believe that bringing WWX back to life would help him get Xiao Xingchen resurrected as XY had been trying this for 8 years with no luck. No I am wondering when XY said "There is a friend who is good at pretending", who he was actually referring to!!!!
- NH also asked XY to get him Nie Mingjue's body (which was with JG after the beheading) which explains why it ended up in Yi Cheng, where XX's body was kept too. This partnership is what prompted WWX to tell NH in the last episode that the most important edict in the Lan principles is "do not befriend the traitorous and evil.". I first thought he was referring to their relationship (NH and WWX) which is plausible but when I heard this theory, NH's response of "Don't worry, I don't get involved in affairs that are not related to me" made a lot more sense.
- NH also instigated Mo Xuanyu by spreading rumours about him which got him kicked out of the Jin clan and increased his desire for revenge against JG (in the book, MX is gay and he is accused of harassing JG himself!). He also gave him WWX's manual to sacrifice himself - this was supposedly kept in JG's secret trophy room and the only way MX would have gotten it is if NH directed him to look for it there.
Such fascinating insights! The moral of the story is that the quiet and timid ones should never be underestimated. :)

I had always wondered (and thought) that XY’s comment to WWX about “There is a friend who is good at pretending” was referring to JGY. But reading that.. that makes so much more sense to me, and as to why XY immediately recognized WWX too when reuniting and asking for his help. NHS probably did took the advantage to make him believe all that.
Also that last exchange between WWX and NHS.. I did think of that too! And I agree, it makes sense. THIS WHOLE COMMENT OF YOURS JUST MADE ME SEE A WHOLE DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE lol so thank you for sharing this theory!! This WAS such a fascinating insight.

@@MONDFILMS Oh one more piece of trivia for you regarding the last scene. When NH bows to LWJ, WWX turns and stands to the side facing LWJ - this was a subtle way of saying “I am not going to accept your bow this time and I am also going to make sure to protect LZ from the likes of you”. I first thought WWX stepped aside because NH was bowing to LWJ as the Chief Cultivator but apparently, what WWX did was intentional. Every time I find something new about The Untamed, I am blown away ☺️

And oh! I think I read of something like that before over that scene on a post. It’s amazing how many subtle touches the untamed has put in their drama for us to look on to when watching!
I also think that WWX was kind of warning NHS to not turn evil during their last scene together because he has been there, he knows the consequence. That's why NHS reassured WWX that he won't meddle in things that does not concern him.
He really is a brilliant strategist. He got his close friend resurrected, got revenge for his brother and revealed the real evil mastermind of all that has happened.
I liked him the 1st time I saw him, I felt that he would play a very important role. I'm glad I wasn't wrong.😆
His “im stoopid” mask is more impressive than Wei Wuxian’s tbh. Those two characters both hide behind a mask of jokes and innocence while their mind swirl like a tornado.
Wei Wuxian can't resist showing off and it gets him in trouble.
The difference is huaisang hides his much more manipulative and somewhat darker tendencies behind his mask while wei ying hides his deep insecurities and self-sacrificing nature behind his smile. Their masks are equally as convincing tho.
Such a dangerous character. He's actually the main manipulator of the movie. And to think that his real characteristic is only found out in the end is actually giving goosebumps.
He wasn't found out. Even at the end, all Wwx had is doubt. He realised to an extent Huai Sang is the person behind this but he didn't know exactly who Huai Sang actually is. Even when they knew he's the person behind it, they couldn't do anything. Huai Sang never reveal his true face aside from at the end of the drama where his confident real face were shown for the first time. However, one should take note that what they at back in the days were all true friendship. Or at least I think it is because if he had ever doubted that Wwx is a bad person, why would he summon Wwx to help him.

This MV made me realize how sad that nothing is left for Nie Huaisang. Weiying has Lan Zhan, Jiang Cheng still has Jin Ling. Song Lan still has Xingchen's spirit pouch with him, Xichen still has Wang Ji and Qiren. Wen Ning still has Wen Yuan/Sizhui while for him he will be alone for life.
Now, you tell this it make me realize that you're right. He lost everything. In his life he love both of his brother, but one brother kill other brother. In last when he take his MY hat, that seen make me realize that he trust him and Love him alot. Even that much that he help him to kill his own blood brother. What is more painful then killing your loved ones or for him I can say Loved twice.

plot twist he is the final boss with all the 5 yin iron in the end, so yea he got all his yin irons. There is still plot hole who is the one helping Wei Ying and the others in the shadows and what is Meng Yao digging up that is already been replaced with a dead body.

That's why in last Wei Ying told him that lesson they learn in school. When Nei bring bird with him in the class. Lesson is about " never be friends of someone who has 2 face something or who lie something like that."
During there lesson Wei Ying and Nei talking to eachother about bird and MENG Yao listening them but, Nei and Wei Ying still listen that lesson tell by Lan wangji uncle.
@@k-poploveeee since when they mention its meng yao mother? lol doesnt make any sense at all. Its a Guanyin temple with a hidden treasure in a damn city thats foreshadowing a Yin Iron just like that goddess statue that killed the entire Wen sub clan. Unless if he bury all the yin iron in his mother body then that make a slight sense otherwise its nonsense why he desperately dig it up when he is at the brink of being raid by everyone. What Wei Ying told Nie is "do not befriend with demon" in subtitle but my poor mandarin understood it as "do not befriend someone with ill intention/spy" but i still dont think Nie can do everything alone especially with the whole Resurrection process of Wei Ying because it seems too bizarre or just really bad writing. I also dont like how they treat Resurrection spell like its common public knowledge that everyone just accept it like nothing at this rate might as well just resurrect every villain lol and it should also be as desirable as yin iron
I realized everything has a meaning. Jin Guang Yao didn't only harm Nie Mingjue, he made Huai Sang do it unconsciously too. So Huai Sang made Xichen stab Jin Guang Yao to understand how it felt like. If he really only wanted Jin Guang Yao dead, he wouldn't really need to prepare so much.

His character is so tragic.
Wwx makes me feel longing for people i loved, the ones i will never see again. But NHS makes me feel longing for things that never happened in my life, the happiness that could have been there but was ripped away from me. NHS spent so much time of his life plotting revenge and, in the end, he was completely alone. He avenged his brother and, in the end, he probably felt empty. Imagine putting everything into something and, when this something is accomplished, you don't know what to do with your life afterwards. You don't feel joy or sadness, just emptiness. Everything ended, you don't have life purpose anymore, and no people around you for support and guidance too.
It’s just like Princess bride when Inigo Montoya says “I’ve been in the revenge business for so long. Now that it’s over, I don’t know what to do with the rest of my life.”
One of my favourite characters! He’s not a villain, nor a bad person. He’s a good guy, an artistic soul, who was forced to do what he had to do when his last family member was brutally taken away from him by someone he trusted and considered as a named brother.
You have put together an incredible video. First, we think Nie Huaisang is a bit flighty and leans towards the artistic rather than the martial path. By the end, we find out that he possesses one of the most brilliant minds and has the patience to oversee his plan for revenge even if it takes years. Nie Huaisang had to harden his gentle soul in order to put everything into motion. Clan Nie will find itself with a clan leader who no longer hides behind a facade. Clan Leader Nie will lead with his shrewdness, inner strength, and courage.

and i think we all know why he is patient with his revenge because as we all know his older brother was reckless impatient and NH really cut their curse that instead of violence use brains....
I think he must have some trusted people, in order to gather information, and he probably has his own spy network, but I think that he probably didn't have anyone in the clan to talk to at first, due to not knowing if anyone was a traitor.
I am worried though. The Nie clan is known for their qi deviations, and even if he doesn't wield his saber, Huaisang still had 13 years' worth of hatred, anger, and turmoil festering within him.
The way this show disclosed his real identity and as the one behind the downfall of Jin Guangyao is truly astounding and the writer, director & actor himself knew what they were doing

I HAVE HIT THE REPEAT BUTTON TOO MANY TIMES. This whole video feels like a ride of emotions. The parts where he asks “ Is it so important? Shall I abandon my brother only to be the master of the Nie family?” to the scenes where he discovers the whole truth, all those scenes together brought me so many chills and excitement. And then the parts right after his ‘thanks’.. god you truly have a gift. This FMV was excellent!

It's really sad how NHS has fought so hard only to lose the last friend he had in the end: Wei Wuxian. I totally get why Wei Ying wouldn't want to be close with him anymore but it's still so sad.
I don't think Wei Ying is like that. Sure he'd be more wary, but they were friends first before shit hit the fan. Wei Ying is one of the few people whom acknowledged Huaisang's desire for freedom and taking pleasure in life. That in itself, I think, is genuine enough. Besides, even if Huaisang did get a clue of Meng Yao's machinations long before his brother died, Huaisang wouldn't have gotten himself involved. His brother's death was the trigger for his mastermind mode to switch on. Unless it was stated in the book, I personally believe Wei Ying wouldn't necessarily cut ties with someone who didn't really break his trust.
@@doritodrummah man I wish that were the case but I kinda disagree with the last part. Huaisang did break his trust. He endangered not only Sizhui and the other youngsters, he ruined Jin Lings life, ruined Wangji's life, ruined Lan Xichen's life, hurt Jiang Cheng deeply by confronting him with his past and present issues and caused great collateral damage overall. I feel like that kinda falls under breaking trust. Ofc it really depends on which version of the story we talk about but in cql Wei Ying explicitely states he doesn't want to "befriend evil" To me that is a clear message towards Huaisang that he and Lan Wangji don't want him in their life anymore. Probably also because they cannot trust him after all he has done. We know Wei Wuxian cannot tolerate injustice and others hurting the innocent people around them. And let's face it: most of the people Nie Huaisang hurt indirectly with his sceme were innocent.
But anyway, this is just my interpretation and I would like to see them happy post canon :D
@@jiangwanyeehaw How exactly did Huaisang have a hand in all of those things? Those were all Meng Yao. He began plotting specifically after his brother's death, which was already after the war in Nightless City, after the Yiling Patriarch had died for being the scapegoat of Meng Yao's crimes. Unless of course he knew and decided not to get involved, then he would be partly culpable being a bystander. Otherwise, everything he'd been doing was just taking gradual steps into exposing Meng Yao's true motives. Wei Ying and Lan Zhan may have been pawns in Huaisang's plans, but he trusted them enough to finish the task, knowing that he himself alone wasn't built for it (he said himself that he wasn't any good at martial arts since he was young). It may sound like dirty play, but if it's someone like Meng Yao you're up against, Huaisang had to be incredibly careful in revealing his identity; otherwise, Huaisang would just be another chess piece in Meng Yao's own game. Jin Ling's father's death wasn't caused by Huaisang but Meng Yao, and this happened way before Mingjue died. As for Lan Xichen and Jiang Cheng suffering collateral damage, that was basically inevitable since not standing with Wei Ying had been their choice.
TLDR: Huaisang began scheming against Meng Yao the moment he found out about the truth of his brother's death. Everything that happened before the Battle of the Nightless City - Jin Ling's father's death, Wei Ying's suicide, Jiang Cheng losing his golden core and Wei Ying replacing it with his own, Lan Xichen standing with Meng Yao all those 16 years - wasn't Huaisang's doing. Wei Ying would have no reason to cut ties; at most he would only keep his distance.

No matter how much I love the developments, arcs and characters. I will forever mourn WWX, NHS, and JC's relationship. It just broke my heart so much, that I feel (a bit) empty how it gave us an ambiguous ending, regards to WWX's relationship towards the other characters. I love them... and I love them so much, it pains me to not know more. I NEED MOREEEE😭

Happy (belated) 2 year anniversary to literally, no exaggeration, hands down, the greatest Nie Huaisang edit every created. I think I’ve watched this video like 10 times and every single time it has managed to stun me. Absolutely magnificent
I love Nie Huesan. He is the good angel who gave us back WWX and by doing so allowed my dear LWJ to have his happy ending while simultaneously make GuangYao pay for his countless crimes and even made possible, for the too obliviously kind to the level of being a liability, Lan XiChen do something good for once and not just gossip behind his brother back to the worst vilain in the story.
NHS used some dangerous tatics to achieve his goal to destroy GuangYao to avenge his brother but he is by no means evil. He doesn't poursuit power or greed. I'm really sad that WWX can think of NHS as evil with all the evil people he has encountered. NHS is a good person.
To fight such an enemy like the smart GuangYao, he didn't have the luxury to not use some very dubious tatics like putting the juniors in a dangerous situation in order to push WWX and LWJ nearer and nearer to the end goal for him.
NHS is a genius is his own right. A careful and focus planner.
Watching videos such as this one, makes one realize how much depth the characters are and how they developed over years. This right here is why the authors novels are so successful! Not because the BL element but because of the plot and how everything is intertwined. No meaningless romances or cliches. But straight up plot development and all round characters.
Huaisang is so smart, yet he was pretending to be useless and dumb. if he could outsmart Meng Yao just like that... he really is dangerous
this is amazing to see so much of his character and his journey i am literally obsessed with this !! his final scene with wwx mixed in with them when they were younger and having fun hit so hard, truly devastating
i’m late asf but i just wanted to say that nie huaisang is one of the most morally grey characters in the show, and it’s not talked about enough.
Omg such an amazing edit!! 👏🏼👏🏼 Nie Huaisang deserved this. He was such an integral part of the story and I think people overlook his character a lot. But I think he is a genius, laidback, caring person. If he did not love his brother so much I doubt he would go to such lengths to reveal the truth to everyone and get revenge on Jin Guangyao.

I’ve truly been blessed... this video really makes you think, he achieved revenge in a way that didn’t require brute force, but instead careful planning. In the end he became a strong character completely by his own volition, despite his brother’s initial expectations for him. In a way he kind of proved that he didn’t need to learn how to fight to be able to win... it’s just really sad how that affected his relationship with wwx.

Thank you for creating such an amazing video for nhs! He was a character that was pure and full of joy during the cloud recesses days, but as the rest of the characters he too had to walk through his own dark path of grief and betrayal.
p.s The scenes you put of him and wwx at the end were emotional - I teared up at the memories.

I just watched Fatal Journey. It's really deep! The movie maybe didnt portray how strong the Nie brothers band is but when they finally came closer to each other then the big brother died, it's really sad.

Their movie was so incredible though. Like-you get to see just how much Huaisang loves his brother, and why he was willing to go through such lengths just to avenge him. Because in the Donghua, he was loved by his brother but we don’t see much of their dynamic as brothers other than the discipling and the scolding. Who could have been thought that nh most innocent character will be the one real mastermind of this story. I hate the part of that he put all clans juniors life danger just because of his revenge . But I love that he did all of this for his loveable big brother not for greed of power unlike jin guangyo. Lanzhan & Wei waxing brilliant in cultivation world but in diplomacy nh &jin guangyo are real mastermind they are not good at cultivation things but they are good at using people mind also I personally think that untamed real villane is jin guangyo father

I’m in love with how Nie Huaisang character! The amount of shrewdness he displayed is quite surprising. Never has a character made me baffled like his did. Throughout the drama, You can predict what the actions and reactions each character would have, but not Nie Huaisang... Nie Huaisang - a background character? I laugh in ‘Mr. I-don’t-know’ 😂

I'm a new fan of both the manhua, donghua, novel and live action and just recently, I've watched The Untamed: Fatal Journey and the way you retold NHS' story is so cool 💕 it makes me love his character more than I already do 💕
i'm glad i decided to search nie huaisang and found this absolute masterpiece. This is beautifully arranged and edited, makes a wonderful short side story that focuses of huaisang, his life, inner turmoil, motivation/revenge and his regrets. I used to not like huaisang because, well yeah, he seems so flightly, a coward, always takes the safe path, so hesitant in everything. Unlike his brother who is very into calvary, he loves the arts, books, paintings, fans etc. We don't know he owns a great mind, amazing at scheming and problem solving. I suspected something about huaisang but i didn't expect that development and ending from his character. His relationship with his da-ge may be complicated, but huaisang loved mingjue nevertheless. I have a big sister who is like a guardian to me too, so I completely understand huaisang towards to climax scene. I would do anything and get revenge on someone who hurt my big sister.

I just love NH so much hes with WWX my fav they are both much more complex then what you could see at first.
I also love that after all those years both are (In my view) so loyal towards the other one NH could have told him everything from the start WWX would have prob Believe him but he also knew that WWX had to find out himself that it was never his own fault what happend to his family and what happend after he died
NH knew that once WWX & LWJ where interested everything would come back to light he himself (NH) would get his Revenge and the reputation of his dear friend got "cleaned" so both could start healing after all those years

This is incredible. I am yet to watch the spin-off movie, but I enjoyed the video nonetheless with what I know from the novel. He's a really great character. He may not have been physically strong like his brother, but he's so resilient and patient, a mastermind.

I'm not familiar with the changes in the live action spinoff, but Nie Huaisang and Nie Mingjue struck me as two brothers who were basically opposites in personality and interest but still had a strong bond with each other. No one plots a 10+ year revenge scheme for someone they didn't love with all their heart. Grief can drive any man to madness.

where are the views for this masterpiece? this is like the most well edited huaisang video i have ever seen and one of the best edited videos about the untamed overall (its actually THE best video i can think of rn but im leaving some space here just in case)... my man this is art... the choice of scenes, the way you start in one place but then slowly build it up towards mingjue dying and then go semi chronologically? absolutely masterful my dude.

I am close to finishing another character vid that’ll be up very very soon. After that one I do plan to make a couple more because like you said, this drama has so many wonderful arcs of it’s characters that I wouldn’t mind putting together videos like these, and share with whoever wishes to see.
Ps. Jiang Cheng is one of my favorites. There’s definitely one coming about him.

first I didn't care much about him, I saw him as a little dork and that's all. Him being the mastermind behind all this was a huge surprise, even though it's quite obvious from the first episode. The film, The Fatal Journey is a must-see and I do think it needed to be done, not just for the sake of the Nie brothers for us to see what a strong bond they had, but what led to his plan. The ending with him bowing to Meng Yao and the change of his facial expression is spot on, like that is the moment where the whole series begins. That moment we can see that he made up his mind, will revenge his brother no matter what. everything is perfection about the series and the two films. I mean the Living Dead is also good, but doesn't really give that much to the series as it is, the only thing it gives is that we can see Wen Ning not as a little fluff ball doing everything for Wei Wuxian ad follows his commands, but finally he can be himself, he is the boss of himself, he is responsible for himself and also for sweetie pie Sizhui (gosh I love this boy so much, so cute), he makes his own decisions.
