The original Gotye song was recorded at a slightly flatter pitch than the standard A440 that most music uses and when Cosmic made the mashup they didn't correct for that so it's microtonally off I don't know how noticeable it is to people who don't play actual instruments but to a musician's ear it's clearly off-tune, but not so much as to be completely discordant

If you think about it, it's almost obvious -- today's tastemakers are yesterday's consumers, so it makes sense art will often lean to the creator's formative years for inspiration.
